ADB Developer options - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

hey guys. I was given this to try to fix. I have a pixel (1st gen) with sailfish. well anyways its stuck bootlooping. I can acess adb/fastboot. Is there ANY way to change Developer settings through adb, so i can fix this this. I know if and when i get past this, i can fix it. Thanks ahead of time!

What is it that you actually want? You want to turn on USB debugging without access to the OS? What is the bootloader status? Can you get into recovery? Is it stock, or TWRP?

Stuck On Boot....Any Help?

I got my Razr Maxx HD on Monday and began playing with it, got it rooted but with no Rom's available yet I had to do some more playing around. I wanted to change the LCD Density to squeeze a bit more on the big screen. I used Rom Toolbox which I still had from my Droid X. I adjusted a couple times and restarted, on my third attempt I meant to set to 250 and accidentily set it to 350 and restarted, now I'm stuck. I booted to recovery and tried a wipe to no avail. Anyone have any ideas for a fix. Should I just bring it back to VZW.
Please help.
Thanks, Shawn
hi,
you need flash your phone with RSDLite, and un FULL rom (Wipe).
if you have XT926, this rom is MAYBE for you http://sbf.droid-developers.org/vanquish/VZW_XT926_4.0.4-7.7.1Q-144_VQW_S3-34-25_CFC.xml.zip
use RSDLite 6.0 minimum (6.1.4 is ok)
How does this tool work? Does it just change the density in the build.prop?
I haven't messed with moto phones that much. Do they let you have adb access while in recovery? If they do, you should be able to adb push a stock build.prop. If not, the RSD way is probably your only option.

Thanks for the advice thus far.
Yes it edits the build.prop. I'm not sure whether I would have adb access, I'm assuming even if I did, debug would have been turned off when I did a wipe data/cache. I don't know how to use adb either though.
yes try, adb before.

Can you give me any insight on how to proceed with adb. I've never used it. You think I should attempt that before doing an SBF?
you need Motorola drivers + android sdk.
Give me your skype or talk by PM, i should help you and after do a how to
I was able to get it fixed, thank you for all your help, it is greatly appreciated.
You have flash a Firmware file with RSD LIte, or push a clean build.prop with adb?

[Q] Stuck in a bootloop, dev ed, root, OTA

I'm new to Motorola in the smartphone world, but just upgraded to a Droid Maxx Developer Edition. The bootloader is unlocked and it has root, but with the stock ROM. Well since yesterday it has been VERY annoyingly insisting on installing an OTA device update every few hours. After postponing it and postponing it I accidentally selected install. Now it's constantly rebooting into recovery (I assume) to install the update, but TWRP loads instead of the stock recovery so nothing happens. Then when I reboot into Android (4.2 19.5.3), within 2 minutes it reboots again to attempt installing the update.
Now, I'm ready to get away from stock (played with it stock for about a month, ready to move on), so I downloaded CM for it. But it won't stay booted into Android long enough for me to copy the .zip over to the phone to flash in TWRP. Also, I've never done anything in adb or fastboot. However, I did install adb (Windows 7 64-bit) and have been playing with that. When my phone is in android, I can usually see it listed as "TA4310BUAV unauthorized" when I run adb devices. After googling, this is because I've not authorized my computer on my phone. However, even after selecting 'revoke all authorizations' or whatever in developer settings, I still get no notification to authorize. And then when I'm booted into TWRP I can't see the phone at all.
Basically, I'm stuck in a bootloop and just want to copy the CM zip file to the phone so I can flash it in TWRP, but I'm at a loss as to how to do this. Can anyone provide me with some advice on how to proceed? It would be greatly appreciated!!

In TWRP try wiping your cache. That should delete the OTA. Then when you boot back into the OS use titanium backup to freeze the app "MotorolaOTA." That should do it.

Thank you so much! I will try this immediately. I just figured out how to get into fastbook, and my computer recognizes the phone in that mode. Is that a good method for pushing the CM.zip to the phone (just for future reference if the above doesn't work)?

May be wrong but I don't think you can push files in that way via fastboot. If my first method didn't work let me know. There are a few other things to try.

I erased the cache like you said (though I did it through fastboot since I already had it up and it's 'new and exciting' and all), and rebooted. Seems to have worked so far. I could go ahead and d/l TiB and freeze that service like you said, but since I'm going to flash CM anyways, I don't see as that's necessary at the moment. However, I can't get W7 to see the phone to be able to transfer the .zip to the phone, whether by Windows Explorer or adb, because I still don't have the option on the phone to authorize my laptop.
EDIT - I'm sure one problem with the computer not listing the phone as a device is it cannot find the device driver to install for it, and I've not been successful googling for it. So in the Windows Device Manager list, my XT1080 has a yellow exclamation mark by it. Also, just installed TiB and froze "Motorola OTA" since I had to wait five minutes to post this edit anyways.

Ok i just like to disable the OTA app to avoid accidentally upgrading and bootlooping. Plus I'm assuming that you'll be making a back up of your stock system to go back to should you not care for CM. Do you have USB debugging enabled on your phone?

As per my edit above, I have now frozen "Motorola OTA". That is a great point regarding the backup.
Yes, I do have USB debugging enabled on my phone. Also, per my edit above, not having the proper driver installed for my phone may be the limiting factor here. Though having never used adb before, maybe it's a slew of other things, I'm not sure.

Finally we're getting somewhere. I had installed that earlier, but never had any success with it. However, after just aimlessly disabling and reenabling things (USB debugging, PTP media sharing, revoking authorizations), and unplugging/replugging, it finally installed the driver. And now adb recognizes it, I was able to authorize my laptop, and I just copy and pasted the cm .zip to my phone.
It seems everything is going to work out just fine! I'm going to back up a few things with TiB and then flash CM.
Thank you so much for your input! I'd still be dead in the water if it weren't for your help!

What makes you believe that TWRP for the original Pixel will work on the Pixel 2? Likely you'll have to wait for a recovery for the Pixel 2.

Yeah I understand that. I was just hoping that since they are so similar it would work. Especially since I am not going to install it on my recovery just boot it to root and suhide.
I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something or something I could change in the image to make it boot on a 2 .
Thanks though for your thoughts!

The similarities are only on the surface my friend. When dealing with computers, similar and close is rarely good enough. You need exact.

The MSM in them is totally different. Plus panel config, clock plan, power grid etc. Your original recovery kernel will not boot on Pixel2, so this is completely expected.

Yes. I agree. Might be me right. I wasn't planning on flashing recovery though just booting it.
If you are feeling adventurous (as it seems you already are!) you might try the twrp-3-1-pixel-bootable-mod.img located here: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120753892 ? I used the instructions at https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/how-to/guide-how-to-systemlessly-root-pixel-xl-t3660324 to root the 2016 Pixel (not xl) and if I upgrade to Pixel 2 might try that. You might just try fastbooting the twrp img referenced there and then flashing the supersu referenced there without the other modifications GroovinChip did. Again you are taking a risk trying this on "dissimilar" hardware.
If your bootloader is unlocked and you want root.
Try installing Chain fire's Supersu from the play store or install the apk.
I do not have my P2 yet to try.

I think this may be a waste of time because it was modded to work on Oreo. They have already released a version that works on Oreo 3-1-1 that I already tried it wouldnt boot it. I will probably just wait even though i want to play. So i guess I can just say yep I have a pixel 2 with the bootloader unlocked and thats about it.
This can't come quickly enough - I always take my Ad Blocker for granted until it's not there anymore :'(

Yeah, I take having root completely for granted. I guess I've never bought a phone right at the moment of release before. If I didn't really need a new phone, I suppose I would have waited. Anyway, I figured out that you can block ads, without root, with apps that run all your traffic through a vpn (that's really only running locally on the phone). The best options after much research seem to me to be Netguard and AdGuard (though I haven't tried them yet). They both also include a firewall (Netguard is primarly a firewall), which I want.
https://github.com/M66B/NetGuard/blob/master/ADBLOCKING.md
https://adguard.com/en/adguard-android/overview.html
DNS66 also seems to be higly regarded, but it doesn't include a firewall. There are other firewall only apps, which work with the VPN method, but you can only run one VPN on Android at a time, so if you want both functions, without root, you need an app that does both.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-dns66-source-host-ad-blocker-root-t3487497
Anyway, that's my plan until root comes along. Then I will go back to AdAway and AFWall+.
There is no kernel source released for the Pixel 2/XL yet. It is based on the 4.4 kernel, this should make development very smooth.

VZN locked, Pixel stuck at bootloader, recovery mode fails -- what now?

Hi all,
I have an OG Verizon Pixel that's now stuck at the bootloader. I haven't done any unlocking or ROM modifications. It was stock 8.1 and it broke pretty close to the January update.
Recovery mode says "Failed to boot to recovery mode".
Starting from the bootloader just loads back into it, but the screen gets off-centered (I can attach pics if it helps).
When the phone was working, I'd never done any of the in-OS tools to start the bootloader unlocking process. I'm not really sure what I should be trying, but nothing I have tried from fastboot seems to work because it's locked. I feel if I could reimage it all, maybe it would work again, but it doesn't look like I have that kind of access.
Verizon's only option was $150 to replace it out of warranty (and then only provided a 90-day warranty). I declined that and got a Pixel 2, but now I have the old phone. Is there anything I can do with it? Or is it just junk?
Thanks,
TBK

Try reflashing the same factory image ur on
If the bootloader isn't unlocked it is probably bricked. With an unlocked bootloader you could reflash a factory image and get it working but you cant do that with a locked bootloader.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. OP test this and if anything breaks report back
That's pretty odd that it would just break like that. If he hasn't messed with anything software related it could be a hardware issue

I don't think it would be different. This sounds like a hardware issue, not software.

ADB and 8T

Okay... I've been searching all over the net for this problem and I keep getting posts that skirt the issue. At least, that's what it seems. So I will begin and you can decide... and thanks for whatever info you can throw my way.
Brand new OnePlus 8T. I want to root it. Duh. So, Got the Tiny ADB and Fastboot package and all the rest, but the issue is with unlocking the bootloader. Other problems may appear later, but this is the issue now.
So, connect phone to PC (Windows 8.1) and the only way that ABD recognizes my phone is when the USB prefs are set to 'No Data Transfer". Yes, I have installed the proper drivers from the phone. So, when the 'No Data Transfer' is selected, ADB recognizes the phone and will issue the command, ABD Reboot Bootloader and the phone reboots to the bootloader. Nice! Unfortunately, it appears that once the phone has booted to the bootloader, it has changed the USB Prefs and now ADB and fastboot do not see the phone. Obviously this sucks. And here is the problem. As far as I know, I have ticked off on all the proper settings. USB Debugging, etc. No joy!
I found a post elsewhere that showed how to set the default USB mode and that didn't work either. My experience has been that ADB used to see the phone under the 'File Transfer' and PTP options before, but it doesn't now. I can't explain this.
So, pretty frustrated. This shouldn't be so bloody difficult. It's only a couple of commands and I have done this with other phones in the past so it's not like I have no previous experience. But I have already wasted way too much time here this go around. Anyone have an answer? I'll be your best friend!!
Thanks all..

to root my 8T, but it appears that this fellow was missing some info? I take it ya can't just flash twrp to recovery like usual. The picture is slowly coming together.. much more complex than the last few times I have rooted phones.
So I assume that flashing twrp writes over the stock recovery.. and that leads to this crashdump mode popping up. To fix this, I will need the stock recovery.img and flash that back into place? Feel free to chime in and thanks in advance!

Flashing TWRP doesn't cause CrashDumps. They happen when you try to boot the system and something's not right.
You could try changing slots and then rebooting. That sometimes works (depending on what else you've done). You can do this in either TWRP or bootloader.
PS: if you use the reply button, then I'll be advised that you've posted a reply. Otherwise you'll have to wait until the next time I look to see if there's new posts in a thread.

What I like about TWRP is that I can do things without needing a PC. So rooting, back up and restore, install new ROMs, ...
And now, with version 3.6.0, TWRP works well on Android 11

Yes, that works,
but don't be surprised to have instabilities in the ROM!
I already had some,
by magisk patch it's more cleaner,
But you are a big boy.
Good luck,

Lol!
I've been using Magisk and TWRP for years, so I'm not only a "big boy" but also an "old dog".

that's not the problem to use it for years,
myself with android 10, I was using it, I was already using magisk in 2015, on my Sony z5c (with lineage 7.0.2/ base is the ROM Orange Telecom owner... )
but since Android 11, the data decryption is no longer the same.
just the 30 second twrp boot, I don't really like it, so restored a system with something like that ... lol
Magisk is the best Root solution!
I like this!
Since the magisk_patched has become root's solution, to A11.
an old dog!!
You like croquettes and the mash?
Thx,

If they could fix the interminable start up time for TWRP that would be brilliant. But I believe the problem is with a file system check rather than the actual decryption which is quite fast.
Sorry, croquettes and mash aren't in my menu. But empanadas - absolutely!
Sorry, I had to leave this for a day or so, but I am back. BillGoss, looking at the guide I posted a link to earlier, would you say that guide is acceptable or are there issues with it? Theoretically that is? And does it depend on what build you are using?
Or if you know of a better process and files, please feel free to point me at it.
Many thanks

Sorry, I have no interest in checking out non-XDA guides. We have enough (too many?) of them on XDA as it is.

There-in why I asked if you might point me at something reliable. But I guess not...
Thanks anyway..

Actually a trick you can use is in twrp if you have the magisk APK change the ext to zip and install in twrp it patches the boot img for you in right slot so you don't have to pull img from phone
