Can I use a smartphone without the glass screen? - General Questions and Answers

Hello, my smartphone's screen is cracked and the repair is expensive. If I remove the glass screen and leave the lcd screen only will the touchscreen work? Will I be able to use it as a daily driver?

Lol, maybe, but even "if" it still worked, the moisture from the air, the oils from your fingers and everything that is transferred to your hands from everything else you touch, dust and particulates from the air would quickly kill it.
Buy a replacement glass that comes with the kit to change it, then find a YouTube video that shows how to disassemble your device and change the glass using the kit. You should be able to find an inexpensive replacement glass and kit and do it yourself, it will save you most of what the repair would be at a shop.

Cracked screen

So my daughter just cracked the screen on my skyrocket, anyone know a reputable place to buy a replacement LCD screen? Or is anyone looking to sell one just pm me.
Ebay. And keep your daughter away from it. Lol

Man, screw eBay. I just looked and the lowest one was $650. You can get the whle new phone for $650 at Best Buy.

These guys might be able to do it, http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/
How did she break the Gorilla Glass ?!
the gorilla glass in the skyrocket is bad, you can find some videos about it in youtube
I ordered a new screen for $164 and replaced it myself. It's pretty easy to do

Sweet! Glad you got it fixed. I'll take that over warranty costs any day. Where did you get the screen from?
Got it from gounlock.com

its not gorilla glass is how she broke it...No where on Samsungs site or Cornings site do they say the skyrocket has it, and in fact i have contacted both and have gotten this response via email from samsung
“Thank you for your inquiry.
The Samsung Skyrocket (SGH-I727) does not feature the Gorilla glass. However, we assure you that all the components of the phone passed the Samsung quality assurance test and have been tested to withstand multiple different conditions”
So, Im hearing some people post on forums that the Digitizer is glued to the Glass and is separable, meaning the repair will cost way less than paying for a whole new digitizer + LCD + Glass assembly.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?
I have a nasty spider web break on my phone but can not afford to pay $160 when I paid $150 for the phone! (I know thats the contract price)

I don't think you can separate them and manage to reuse the circuitry, were talking less 1mm thick. I've replaced glass before, next time I'll probably send it to Sammy.

Replacing the glass is not too difficult if you know your way around computer hardware. What makes it a pain is how small all the connections and ribbon cable clasps are and ect.
Here's a link to a video tutorial on the Atrix to give you an idea of what you can expect. About an hour to replace.

I got a used S2 skyrocket off ebay. Only the outer glass is cracked.
I saw this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtiyU-RQUU0
Has anyone tried such a method and only changed the glass? (outer glass is cheap on ebay). Thx

Tried and failed... That is a nice video, but my understanding is that the Galaxy S II and III are different for repairs. The III you can replace just the top glass, but with the II it's easiest to replace the whole LCD and digitizer + glass. HTCs on the other hand have the top glass and digitizer as one replaceable unit.
I had this idea I could get the LCD lifted up and then use fishing line like floss to separate the glass and digitizer. But I didn't get that far. I didn't have enough heat and trying to remove the LCD, it busted. The OLED is like a brittle film and the adhesive used is crazy, so that method was doomed. I think if I had a different approach things might have gone better.
Now I have a worthless disassembled phone waiting on the prices of the whole LCD to come back down to sane levels. They were like $121,$131,$155, last check they're $200 on eBay. Makes me want to cuss!
I saw a video on YouTube where the top glass was busted open, not just cracked. I think it was a plain Galaxy S II. They used playing cards to dig in between the glass and digitizer layers. Then you clean off the digitizer and tape your new clean glass down and it would be fixed. I think if you could further break the top glass to pry it up and be able to dig in between the glass and the digitizer, that's how I would try to replace just the glass.
Ok, I dug in my web history and found the video I remembered: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=judy-izOmKk
So in the video they had their screen/digitizer/glass removed from their phone chassis. I wouldn't go that far fearing you'd break the LCD. You may not have to do more than removing the battery before you get started.
Another thing the Skyrocket top glass needs this double sided clear tape. I presume this is because the digitizer is separate from the top glass and needs to be connected right to the glass instead of just held on with the double sided tape on the edges alone. I imagine that that could work if you pressed extra hard on your touches, but I don't know. I found this tape from EtradeSupply.com - they have a Youtube video I watched over and over. But shipping to the states is $15, adding to the expense.
Hope this helps anybody.
me too
I did the same thing. I got the old glass seperated with a hair dryer, but messed up some of the amoled screen and the glass was never fully flush after the reglue.
Super Annoying. :/ ending up buying the new screen kit on ebay for like 120. :/
Repair Follow-up
Yeah, I was able to get a new housing and screen assembly for my Skyrocket and all is well now. My phone is like new.
I did find some newer repair videos that use the playing card trick for removing just the cracked glass.
Samsung nexus glass repair i9250 part 1 - YouTube
Samsung nexus glass repair i9250 part 2 - YouTube
Samsung Nexus glass replacement follow up - YouTube
The quick version is that he says stick the phone in the freezer for a couple of minutes, because that will weaken the digitizer glue/tape. Then use your card to dig the glue out, pushing it out of the edge of the glass in a slow, lengthy process. He had success this way on a similar phone. I read elsewhere that Goo Gone cleaner could be used to remove any adhesive residue from the digitizer.
One thing I would worry about with this process is air bubbles in the new digitizer tape, since this other video has an industrial vacuum pressure machine as part of the final assembly process of the screens.
LCD and Digitizer touch the production workshop/Enterprise Solutions - YouTube
Related is an issue of dust, since a spec of lint or dust will cause an air bubble, as I just discovered applying a screen protector onto my Skyrocket.
So this little "$15" repair can add up with the digitizer adhesive and buying the Goo Gone and rubber gloves (which I didn't even use) and all of the rest. Just going for the new display comparatively is easy.

quick question about fixing screen

ok so I dropped my one s and my screen quit working (its all black). It still registers when I touch it though (I can still unlock it and everything) does this mean I just need to replace the screen? Or could there be more to it than that? If you need more information just ask. Thanks in advance for your help!!!
EDIT: There's a crack in the screen from the drop. But it's so thin it's almost impossible to see.

I had the same issue. the easiest option is to buy the LCD/digitizer with the Glass, but the cost is around $120.
the cheaper option is for you to separate the glass for the LCD/digitizer yourself and just order the glass yourself $5
that's what I went and did and it didn't go so well for me, broke the LCD while taking the shattered glass off.

I have purchased this, as the LCD and touch are working fine. In your opinion, would a mobile technician be able to handle the procedure to separate the glass lens and replace it ?
I'm sure a technician can, but taking off the glued glass is a lengthy process.. took me 2 hours.

Best place to order a screen replacement?

I dropped my nexus 5 getting out if the car and now the glass screen is shattered at a corner. The digitizer seems fin and every where on the screen is responsive.
So I was wondering if there were a place i can order just the LCD screen and without the digitizer/housing.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
The digitizer and LCD are fused together.. You need to replace them both!
If I were you, I would send it to a LG Service outlet and let them replace it. The ones you order online may or may not work + you need to do everything yourself. However, if you're good at it, then ordering online will certainly save you few bucks!
As the phone is only $350. Spending anything more then $150 won't do it for me as I'd rather buy a new or used phone. I was hoping there was a place to get just the glass part.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
The only way that makes sense is if you can get a phone that is as good or better than the n5 for $150 or less.
I dropped mine, three days after it was delivered, no case as it had not yet arrived
The corner of the case was dented and the screen shattered but still fully useabIe.
I was wary about knock off spare parts and my skill with glue and tape if I went DIY so I sent mine in to LG service centre. The cost was £114.67 including Special delivery both ways ( Insured, tracked, next day delivery).
The worst part was the waiting, it took them 10 days to give me an estimate of he cost and three more days to get it back to me. It is good as new now and still has warranty.
I've just checked, thats about $190! So I uderstand your dilemma.

This is Elena from parts4repair.com,we can offer only oem glass for you,(the original one is out of stock now),and I am a new user,so i can't offer the link for you, maybe you will be interested to visit our website,or contact with us by [email protected].
Please notice that:the outer glass lens is without any function of digitizer or display. and only glass replacement is a professional job, and special tools are required, too. By the way, glass and the screen are bonded together, so both separating them and gluing them together are difficult job. Please sure you can do it before order.
Hope can help you,Thanks.
Never try to replace just the glass. You'd need loca glue & a uv light to cure it. The glue could get into other components and totally ruin your phone. And even if by a small chance you can pull it off, it will never be 100 percent. Always replace the whole assembly. - coming from somebody who has tried to replace just the glass.

you are right,it is very hard to get it done right by people who mostly have no experience,so please think twice before do it if it is first time for you to change it.And we also can offer LG N5 D820 a full screen assembly(front housing cover + digitizer + lcd screen+glass).
I used my old front housing and removed the old LCD and Glass. It was very difficult but it came out working 100%. This has been the 3rd display I have fixed and so far the most difficult. The rest of the parts were really easy though. Just separating the LCD and housing was painstakingly time consuming and dangerous.

Display replacement

Unfortunately I crashed display on moto x play...so if anybody now trusted site to buy new one....tnx
Anyone found a display replacement that includes the front cover? Without it, it should be nearly impossible, am I right?
Gesendet von meinem XT1562 mit Tapatalk
I haven't seen any.
I tried combining the components and failed. Broke the circuitry in the LCD when trying to mount the frame...
I asked Motorola what i should do when i dropped my phone and the glas got broken. They told i should send it to their repair service, it was datrepair in Germany maybe its another in other countries. They Arranged everything for me and i paid 120€ for the replacement, just the glass maybe touch but idk, screen was ok when i was sending it in. They even took care of shipping without any cost for me.
Normaly i repair devices by myselfe but in fact the phone was only 1 Month old i refused to it.
If you have a heat gun (or hair dryer) and a set of torx screwdrivers, you should be able to fix it at home. If something is tight, never force it. Use plastic tools to pry open the case, usually comes together with the screwdriver set if you buy them online

For that, you would need the lcd including the frame which is nicht available yet...
So atm nearly impossible.
I managed to get some tiny cracks on the edge near the front camera (it fell onto metal from my jacket, i was bending over). Thankfully it's not the touch area, but i now somehow understand why so many people have cracked phones. It happens so quickly. And i was treating it like a raw eggshell, too.
I dropped mine as I was getting out of the car.It cost me R1500 (R is for South African Rand) to replace the screen. The guys who repaired it had to crack the plastic frame to get the screen out .They used glue to keep the new screen in place.I dont think they knew what they were doing, but it was the only repair center that was in the same province as me.

Yeah, please make a video it'll help many.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_yzMPWCQOM This video shows the whole process with a complete display assembly. Its incredibly more difficult if you get the screen without the frame as the screen is affixed to the frame with some sort of adhesive foam.
I also broke my screen and ordered a replacement. Unfortunately I broke the frame in the process of removing the old screen.
Luckily I got my hands on a replacement frame and some 3M 2 milimeters adhesive strips. Praying for everything to work out put together..

Best of luck, if you can document the process as there isn't much info out on screen replacements where you affix a new frame to a screen. My frame broke when I dropped my phone which is why I just got the whole unit. Cost me about $62 CAD shipped for the whole unit.
Has anyone here tried a replacement? Any tips?
So is it possible to change just the glass without the whole display unit?

So, I tried for myself with my old display after I got a replacement new display including a new frame.
It is absolutely impossible to separate the front glass from the digitizer and display without destroying all three.
I think even a professional wouldn't be able to do it. Display and digitizer are very flexible while the screen is glued really really good to them
I heated it up to no avail. Maybe some glue remover would have helped, but I don't think it would get between the glass and the digitizer.
These phones are just not build to be repared, they are build to be thrown away.
Exchanging the new frame including display was no easy job too, but it can be done.
Be sure to have a high quality Torx T3 screwdriver or bit, the cheap china ones will do nothing but destroy the tiny screws.

Glass Replacement

Over the weekend I dropped my mix 2s and have cracked the bottom of my screen glass.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and fixed this. I have purchased a new glass on eBay: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/263620735738?ViewItem=&item=263620735738
I am planning to take it to a professional repair shop.
Is it likely that they will be able to separate the glass from the LCD and glue on this replacement? Is there any risk of this going wrong and my screen from acting weird afterwards?
No, it is in fact very unlikely they'll be able to separate them.
It will be more expensive but you'll have to get an lcd display and glass assembly all together.

According to this: Ali Express
LCD Only: If the image under the glass is broken and the touch panel is NOT then you only need an LCD.
Touch Panel aka Digitizer: If the top touch panel or aka glass top is cracked or broken but the image under it is fine then you only need the Touch Panel.
Complete Screen with Touch Panel and LCD: If the top touch panel is broken and the LCD image is either black liquid or cracked you need a complete screen.

According to that; If the glass is cracked, I only need the Digitizer replaced.
I am happy to get the whole thing, its just I have already ordered a Digitizer and thought this was all I needed. I could be wrong.
Any recommendation on the type of screen I should purchase for best results?

Hi i managed to change my whole lce by myself. Its quite hard only for heating the glue and opening everything. There is no guide on internet so i just follow mi mix 2 guide. I bought from aliexpress, 60 euro, claimed to be original, checked its JDI from cti app, and very good quality, color also very good, nothing weird, glass also oleophobic.
Any update on this? I'm in the same situation, front glass is cracked but phone otherwise fine. Replacement is only $10, but can just the glass even be replaced?
I just bought the whole LCD/Digitizer for $60, not even going to attempt to separate just the glass

Hey emanuel.caesar,
thanks for your helpful post. A few further questions from my side:
which lcd did you choose exactly? Are you still satisfied with the quality? And the last question Does the video guide for the Mi Mix 2 work for the Mi Mix 2s as well or are many things different? Thank you in advance for a short reply.
Hello,
Is not a good idea to try to just replace de LCD screen. I did this operation many times in the past and I can confirm that's a long operation (~1h30), there's a lot of risks that you break the digitizer and for a good result, you need LCD glue and a UV machine.
So, I think it's a better idea to replace all the screen: LCD + Digitizer.
Any suggested YouTube videos to replace the glass + LCD + digitizer?
Looking at a used phone with broken glass. It's like $10 for glass or $32 for the whole set and if I recall last time I had glass swapped it was like $60 labor and no guarantee the LCD wouldn't break. I'm pretty technical have repaired plenty of phones Android and iPhone. Anyone have a good link for removing the LCD / digitizer / glass unit? Is this like the Samsung where you need to use a blow dryer to heat the adhesive to get it off? Or like an iPhone where you just take screws out and pry the panel out? Much appreciated
