What happens if you unlock the bootloader and what features do i loose? - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi, i am very curious on the rooting scenario.. what happens if i unlock the bootloader and root my op7, wich features do i miss out on and does it do anything special? I want to use substratum, since i like to theme my phones ?

You will lose Widevine L1 which will means you cannot view DRM video in anything but 480p. (ie. Netflix will not play HD video)

Correct. It reads the security level as L3 and just downloads the content in 480p. I've tried this before and it was still just L3 and not L1

Netflix and Amazon correct? As long as YouTube is good.

Is it permanently lost, or can you recover it by re-locking the bootloader?

On older Oneplus Phones it is recovered by re-locking it (read here for example), haven't read any statements for the OP7, though I would assume it's the same.

Lmao! Come on now this isn't like back in the day where you entered line by line in adb.. They could also just want to unlock the bootloader to convert their tmo OP to an international and don't really care about root.

A lot of banking apps won't work on rooted devices due to the security risk it poses to your accounts with those banks. I have also read that Pokémon Go also does not work on rotted devices. You will also lose Google Pay.

Isnt there some app like gearbox or something that can hide the detection in apps? I think i did this back in the day ?

Yes, you can just hide those apps using magisk hide in the magisk manager. It works with all banking apps, for me.

Lets discuss what we can do with our rooted V20!

Hey guys,
Its been a while since I rooted my phone (I've been using Samsung phones with locked bootloader) and it sure feels good to be back!
Now, I've been out of the loop for so long that I don't know what I should do next with my rooted V20!
I would love to have you guys come in here and discuss how we can make our V20 even better!
Thing's I've done so far.
Install Adaway
Remove Bloatware using titanium backup (is there better way to remove bloatware beside titanium backup?)
So far I removed all the TMobile apps, is there anything else I should remove that will improve the battery life?
Thanks and lets get this thread going! :good:

I hear ya, I was on a S7 Edge and a S6 before that. It has been a while. With that being said, LG stuff can mostly go....unless you use it. It doesn't seem to be too bad, so you might be able to leave them. Download Better Battery Stats and see what is causing any wakelocks that can be prevented.
Has anyone managed to get rid of Lookout? I hate that thing and want it gone.

Might want to FREEZE apps instead of uninstalling until a viable stock restore is available
Adblocking for sure. Should help improve battery life a hair by not downloading data for ads and processing them to be shown.

From what I've read, TWRP isn't doing proper nandroids, and there isn't a stock image to flash. At the risk of sounding "elitist," I'd recommend going slow.

I know what's in the root thread in the development section.
Is this what you're looking for?
The problems with the .tot files in a nutshell.
I'm not a dev. I can bearly muddle my way around ADB commands. I know what I know from watching the struggles in the root thread. Yeah, there's root and little else. The process doesn't seem quite ready for prime time which of course hasn't stopped the root commandos.
I CAN CONTROL THE WORLD WITH ROOT! LOL . No but really, what can't you do with root? you can do everything as long as the phone doesnt required to implement any new hardware within the phone... I like my Adaway, and greenify, and removes or freeze apps i dont like nor need, I like my pie bar for faster shortcuts (sure, the phone itself has the second screen to put up to 5 apps, but the pie bar give you a lot more options so i will have the 5 on the second screen plus the many mores in the pie bar which is a fast process too, maybe even faster than the second screen), i also like my xposed for every module i desire, AND MY BELOVED TITANIUM BACKUP! and many many more things
The one thing I hope and pray to see come from this newly acquired root is a camera mod that will allow 16MP in full 16:9. Please pull through devs! I would donate for that :highfive:

That's likely because the sensor isn't 16:9 shaped, it's 4:3. You have to crop the sensor to get 16:9.

Widevine and Root

Anyone know if root kills Netflix hdr, hdr etc on the 7 Pro? This was the case on earlier OnePlus phones, but I have a Pixel 3XL rooted and keep hdr Netflix content with no issues.
Was never an issue on the OnePlus 6T, I don't see the 7 Pro having an issue either.
How was it not an issue? you root, you loose security L1 and move to L3

It varies device to device. Pixels (and apparently your HTC) retain L1. A bunch of Chinese devices do too - Xiaomi, etc.
My pixel 3xl had the widevine keys deleted from vendor firmware_mnt after I unlocked.
So be careful, you might not get the keys back.
I will relock soon and see if it helps

You should Magisk hide Netflix. Apparently some people are able to retain L1 (it should be impossible with unlocked bootloaders.. Oneplus will lose l1 status upon unlock..) I'll see about trying to keep l1 on oneplus 7 pro.

Do elaborate. I don't think it's possible either but would love to see exactly why that is. Nothing is impossible in this world.
Unlocked bootloader = widevine L1, period.
You can download Netflix app that apparently circumvents this and still displays HD video, but not working here (plus it's old version without full screen anyway).
With the Huawei Mediapad M5 Pro, my tablet I still use, as Oneplus is not making awesome tablets , I used a Custom Rom from Openkirin.net and I was able to keep Widevine L1 and Netflix in HD.
Do any of you know of good Custom Roms that have Widevine L1 enabled? (it was at least their resurrection remix version for Kirin devices that kept Widevine L1)
Maybe some devs are reading along and have perceived a way to add it to a Rom and would think about adding it :-o

How much does rooting your phone improve the OnePlus 7 Pro?

So I've never rooted a phone but have always been very interested in doing it. I'm just worried about bricking my phone since I have no experience doing it. Is it easy for a beginner to pick up and is it worth the risk? How much better does it improve your experience?
It's a personal thing. Most things you can do without root. Its a matter of personalization.
You can fix OnePlus’s ****ed up notification system. That alone is a big benefit.
You can't really brick the OnePlus 7 Pro, there are recovery options and people here to help if you do. It is extremely easy to do with little to no risk.

Explain this issue if you can. I was looking for a reason to root. I already got my sim unlock from T-Mobile. Only thing I'm missing is all my data backed up by titanium that I use on every device I get. I usually root day one but every passing day I appreciate Oxygen OS more and more. The experience reminds me of the old days of rooting the SAM**** and installing Cynagen. This is smooth as butter
Rooting actually let's you do a back up and restore if you do mess something up. It let's you remove apps that you don't want like for example sprint radio that I never used, can't remove without root. Root let's you use adblock and YouTube premium(ad free YouTube). Root lets you flash custom kernals even if on stock os, custom kernal can improve battery life. Ultimately things improved where u really don't need root like rooting a Samsung will cause a iressviserable Knox trip but one plus doesn't use Knox. And can be locked back to official status

what's wrong with it?
I have it rooted just as a "piece-of-mind" thing. And actually, it looks like YouTube TV took away 720P playback after I rooted. So there's a reason not to do it; first-party apps may not work properly to combat piracy, which is a load of crap if you ask me.
If you root, you won't be able to get anything above 480p or HDR on Netflix. Something to consider.

Wow really? Well damn that's pretty big reason not lol. I use Netflix all the time on my 7 Pro.
Getting rid of ads are a good point.. but then other than the occasional irritant, I don't mind them enough to want to root. Other than that, there is no other reason for me to root. I would love the helvetica nueve font. Haven't found a way to do that without root. But that's okay.. I am still not going to root.
Interesting enough I originally join this board to root, but I have not rooted any device in years.
Even reading the board there always seems to be some trade off.
New update, can not do it right away got to wait so you can root.
Apps that will not work when rooted, ok but almost always you can get them working.
..... Just not worth it anymore for me.
Now I am happy reading about things like the GCAM, and things other people are doing.

You will still get HDR but it will be in 480p. Most of of the time you will never notice the difference.
Even while unrooted, Netflix will only display 720p on the oneplus 7 pro. So you gotta weight your options here.

For me one of things for rooting is magisk modules for adblock, vanced youtube, debloating, themes, changing the navigation bar height, V4a, boosting the speaker audio and custom kernels as well as customization to OOS.

There are magisk roms like renovate that give you the option or you can download RomAur (based on OOS) which has all these customization baked without needing any extra modules.
Also many banking apps aren't keen on root. Mine does a bunch of different checks. Main reason I've not rooted.

Any ROM for P40 Pro modified with google services?

Is there a modified Android ROM to introduce Google services for a Huawei P40 pro, instead of having to do it later with Goglefier or similar? If so, does it allow updates?

The method I saw used software test points. And I saw it first hand, it worked flawlessly if yet a bit nerve wrecking. I am not sure if the program is allowed to be mentioned here as it can have illicit uses so I won't say it's name but it's publicly available. I only seen it used on P40 pro + but would assume it works similarly for all P40 series devices.
I uploaded this way twrp, but due to the lack of modified software nothing after that I could not do more. I would need to know how to modify the software
