Help with Google Play app - General Questions and Answers

I had an app on my phone that was used to hide photos. I used it for several years and no problems. Today I go to open the app and it was acting like it was my first time ever using it... then I look in the Private folder and its completely EMPTY. I had over 800 very important photos in there and I can not find them. I looked in google play for the app... and its gone. I even talked to Google Help people and they said the app is no longer in the app store.
So what am I supposed to do?
I looked in the phone, and I found a folder called .photosafe and another called .photosafe_DoNotDelete
i opened the donotdelete one and it has a camera folder in there, i open that folder and there is an images folder, a videos folder and 2 files. So i click on images and i believe its all my pictures but when i click on one to open it it asks what app i wanna open it with and i tried several and none work. i think they are just text files.
how can i get the pictures back? can i change the files to something so i can open them?
please help. I am completely devestaed. The p;ictures are very important to me.

Did you ever find a solution to this issue?
I have the same problem

Do you remember the exact name of that app?
If yes, try to google with it for some clues.
You can also post a thread for help about that app on sub-reddits, AndroidApps.
Good luck to you.

has anyone figured out how to prevent the phone from deleting pictures from gallery

since i've updated to 2.3.3, i've noticed that some pictures are missing from phone. i think i had the issue with 2.3.2 as well. noticed video missing as well. this really gets to me since the pictures just randomly get deleted from the phone. i've googled it and it's a common problem. does anyone have a fix for this yet?
My understanding is that the pictures arn't actually getting deleted, just the gallery isn't displaying them. To be sure, connect your phone to your PC and browse to the pictures, they should all be there.
I believe I saw a 'fix' somewhere about installing a different gallery manager app, and that that seemed to fix the issue. I can't remember which forum I saw it on, so please don't quote me.
This used to happen to me on my NS. It would look like the photos where deleted but then when I would check later on they would be their ,and that was on 2.3.2
As we say in French: "Dans le doute, reboote". (When in doubt, reboot). Your pictures will be back in the gallery. That's the only workaround I found for the moment...
I've had this but the pictures *are* deleted. I do not trust the Gallery app anymore, and only use QuickPic (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alensw.PicFolder&feature=search_result).
T
Quickpic is the way to go!!
I use Quickpic as well cuz the gallery app sucks. I just lost pics and a video that i converted and moved onto my phone. They are gone. Can't find them using my computer to browse my phone, can't find them using ESfile explorer either. Rebooted. Still gone
Can't find a fix anywhere. Not happy.
At least I didn't lose data on my iPhone.
I have had this happen to me too, but i had the app AndExplorer on it and i read something where it said that this app was known to delete files just randomly, so if you have this app.. id suggest using Linda Manager or another file manager instead..
Here is what you can try when you see pictures not showing up in gallery3D app:
Stop or FC Gallery.apk so it's not running
Use root expolorer (or some other expolrer capable of displaying files and folders starting with ".")
Browse to /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails
Delete all pictures and files you see there (those are thumbnails only)
You might have to reboot the phone but usually you can just start Gallery and it will regenerate (slowly) all your thumbnails again.
Gallery3D app creates the folder called ".thumbnails" for which it stores all thumbnails of your pictures for quick screen draw on the 3D interface. If for some reason you copy your pictures from one place on SD card to another or you add new pictures without Gallery.apk running they wont show up because thumbnails were either deleted or never created.

gallery app - subfolders

I want a gallery app that doesn't just clump every folder with pictures in it in to root gallery.
For example:
/album/pets/cat
/album/pets/dog
/album/pets/fish
In the stock app (and all others I've tried) will put cat, dog, fish right in the main gallery. I just want to see a subfolder called pets.
Looking at my photos and directory structure on a computer, my files are neat and well organized. In gallery it takes forever to find what I'm looking for.
I've tried just about every app out there, and even sent feature requests to several authors. The author of Quickpic said he'd consider it. Thats about the furthest I've got.
Any other suggestions?
You should check out JustPictures. It's in the market. I've been using it for a while, and it's great.
Or also QuickPics also in the market
I should of listed the ones I've tried. JustPictures and Quickpics behaves the same as the stock app regarding folder structure.
I actually emailed both devs about adding that feature..

Maybe it'll get added to QuickPic, I emailed the dev about that too - or at least a tag type of implementation where I could tag my folders and sort by the tags. QuickPic is still a great app.
EDIT: You can sort by path in QuickPic, but all of the folders are still on one screen. Example: If you have:
/colors, then
/colors/blue
/colors/green
/colors/red
-and-
/pets, then
/pets/cats
/pets/dogs
/pets/fish
The folders will show up in this order: blue, green, red, cats, dogs, fish. At least common folders will be grouped near the others in the same parent directory. I believe this feature was implemented in the latest update.

Cool, I knew I couldnt be the only one that organizes by folders.
My real pain is I have a folder called work where I keep all my work related stuff. Theres a ton of stuff and all the subfoloders clutter up the main gallery view..

If you use that folder more than any other, there's also an option to automatically open the app to the last opened folder when you launch the app. If you need a different folder, you just hit the back button.
The MIUI gallery is awesome because it has three views -Favorites, All Folders, and SD card - that are tabs at the top of the app. I use QuickPic for certain things, but the MIUI gallery is my default gallery because I put the 3-5 folders I use the most on the favorites tab, so usually that's all I need. If QuickPic could do something like this, it'd be my default.
EDIT: Just realized your problem is with the work folder's subfolders, not with having to go through everything to get to the work folder. You could exclude the work folder (and it's subfolders) in QuickPic, and use the stock gallery for work stuff. That way the work stuff doesn't get in the way with QuickPic. I'm still hoping for a folder-tree type of listing.

Hiding Pics from the Gallery??

Hey guys:
I've got tons of comicbooks on my storage card that keeps showing up as individual folders in my picture gallery. I know I could drop a "no media" file in the main folder to stop it, but then my other apps wont read anything in that folder as well correct? Is their any way to exclude the comicbook folder from the gallery?
thanks

call me crazy, but I have a feeling the easiest solution is to create a .nomedia file and put it in the folder you want to hide.... ooooor I could be 100% wrong.

You are crazy ;-) does not work here.
This does not solve your problem, but may be an alternate solution. I use a gallery replacement called QuickPic. Inside of QuickPic you can choose which folders are hidden so you only see the ones you want.

I've heard of QuickPic. But I really like the stock Gallery. And if I put a no media file in that folder,, my comicbook reader apps wont see the files either right?
Actually, all you have to do is rename the folder or file and put a "." at the start of the name. So a folder called "my_pron" renamed ".my_pron" won't show up
It's probably worth noting that you should do the rename on your tab and not from your PC, I had problems with it not working when I did it via my PC, that's why I mention it. I used Astro File manager and it works just fine.

It's a program designed to be more along the lines of hiding naughty things, but it would allow you to move all your comics into a side gallery type section, plus once their there you can subdivide them into their own folders AGAIN so that you have individual comics in mini-galleries, with sorting by name or date possible to make for easy ordering.

Noteworthy item is that with the EI22 update yesterday, my app got wiped with the rest of my phone, but upon re-installing it and going through new-startup steps it found the SD card data from my previous installation - yay SD card!

I have a app similar to this called Hide & Sneek. But I have to unhide pics everytime I need to use it. Will Keep safe allow me to hide the comics just from the Gallery , but let them be used in the Combook reader?
Quit trying to hide the pron from her and you won't have issues! Or just if ya get caught freak out and claim you must have a virus!

.face Folder Is Choking With Thousands Of Files...

I have a folder called .face it has thousands of files residing. I opened a few of them in the text editor and did see a jpg header. I copied and renamed them to *.jpg. they seem to be resized thumbnails of some sort. Can anyone tell what is generating these files, and is there a way to stop future creation? Is it safe to delete them?
Thanks and regards,
Sounds like caching for an image gallery type app...

How long have you had your GNote 19.1? I have had mine for about 2 months and I only have 2 files in the .face folder.
.face folder
I've 110 files in the .face folder, almost all dated at the first days I had the GNote.
Couldn't it be something related to the "Smart Stay" function?.
Maybe they are sort of pics taken from the front camera to help the GNote identify your face and your eyes. Someone has not activated this function and so, for him, there aren't much files in the folder.
Just a supposition...

I've examined my files.
They are thumbnails of (mainly) some of the photos I took with my camera. From these photos it seems that only the face has been thumbnailed.
Anyway there are also faces coming from the few pics I downloaded from Internet.
I wonder what's the use for all these thumbnails...
Now I'm very curious...
The files are from the facial recognition feature the camera has, you can turn this off in your camera settings if you choose .

Why then there are faces from pics not taken with the camera (i.e. saved from internet)?
It recognises any face in the gallery even downloaded images... you can then tag them from your contacts

Thank you. That makes sense...
Can i delete them with doing any harm?
This .face folder is driving me crazy.
The system settings for face unlock are all off, the Face Unlock apk is disable but the .face folder keeps being created, also it keeps growing with new files. I don't know what else to do.
What is the apk that creates the folder and also creates new files in it? Hopefully i will be able to disable if i ever figure this out.
I hope anyone here can point me into the right direction, cause I can't, and google hasn't help me either.
Thanks.
Same here on Note 2 N7100
Went to Camera settings but no where to turn it off.
Anyway is it safe to remove the folder? I mean maybe next time I wanna re-enable the face tagging again who knows
Thanks!
Ok... I guess I might have found out what causes the .face folder filling up wih files! It's "Gallery" application's "Tag Buddy" feature... as soon as I disabled it, it didn't re-create those thousands of files.
I had deleted them all and periodically checked if they would be recreated after opening any new application. I hadn't opened "Gallery" in a while, but it opened automatically when I reviewed a photo I had just taken... and guess what: as soon as the application started, the files in the .face folder started to reappear! After stubling around the settings and sub-menus and force-closing the app a few times to verify it as the cause for the .face folder choking up with thumbnails, I isolated the cause: "Tag Buddy"... a feature that I don't even know what it does! ...and for me, having a few thousand photos in the phone's tsansflash card (actually I have a Note II phone, but I guess some apps are on both devices... if not on even more Samsung tabs and phones) generated something around 28000 files in the .face folder, choking up the file system and therefore effectively even slowing down file operations!!!

Face is part of Android 4.1+ camera app. On a Samsung phone this is how it is turned on and off.http://skp.samsungcsportal.com/integrated/popup/HtgDetailGuide3.jsp?seq=10370&cdsite=in
Its just a cache for the face recognition feature of the Galaxy series on the camera on the gallery. just by opening the gallery and it find a face in a photo it will make the cache.
What i did was DELETE the ".face" folder and then create an empty file named ".face"
Android wont be able to create a folder with the same name and just give up.
thanks for the .face file idea

I tried that and just a file didn't work. My wife kept creating folders. I laughed a little at her and explained if she creates a folder there is really no point in deleting it. Then she goes and shows me up and does something brilliant. She opens up the burstly image folder and copies one of the cache files to the root directory deletes the .face and renames the cache file .face and damn it she did it. A .face file not a folder...no more face data for Samsung.

help with locker app files

Ok, so my buddy had an app downloaded from the google play store. back when the S4 Mini was newish. He had some kind of photo/file locker app which all i can tell you is it made a folder on the internal storage simply called "Locker" and all the encrypted files that were locked with that app were in there but of course un-readable because that are apparently actually encrypted to some extent. the phone went overboard in the salt water, couldnt be repaired but i managed to get it running enough to pull the "locker" folder with all the locked data off the storage. He doesnt remember the name of the app used and no longer has the google account to look at his download history to find it. but the icon was blue-ish and it created a folder called "locker" on the storage. he entered his passcode on a dialpad looking menu and boom, his locked files showed up. but thats all i know about it. hes trying to get that data readable again, and changing the extension to jpeg or jpg or png didnt work. just wondering if anyone here may have some sugguestions of apps to try to get these files readable again, if i could find the exact program used my plan was to install it on his new phone. set a password and lock a random picture so this way the program would created all the directories or whatever it needed, and i can copy the recovered files from the old phone and copy them into the new phone in the appropriate directory, and hopefully unlock those files. sorry if im jumping around alot. so im trying to find a way to make these files readable again is the end goal. ive tried for days to get them unlocked. and if anyone can help me they are on these forums. Any help ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I uploaded one of the smaller files which should be the image and one of the larger ones which should be the video. both just say there are no previews available when i try and open either of them.
If the files were encrypted then no matter which app you use, you won't be able to open them. You need to decrypt them first. To decrypt them you need the password they were encrypted with and the encrypting/decrypting algorithm (provided by the locker app). I would try to find the app (and copy the files to its folder), or try to decrypt it using various decrypting algorithms, provided the app uses a standard well-known one.
