Most of you will be aware that a new "app optimization" feature was added to a recent 5.1.1 based firmware update.
I've been trying to research exactly what this does because Samsung have not updated their user manual (you can access this via the user manual widget) to cover this new feature. After searching online, I've come to the conclusion that I'm not the only one who isn't sure what this feature does and there's a lot of incorrect information out there.
Below is some examples of what I've read:
It's Samsung's implementation of doze - I think this is incorrect as doze is a system wide state that uses sensors and screen off information.
Someone on AC forums was told by a Samsung employee that for example, it will make taxing games black and white so they don't require so much processing power - I really don't think this is the case.
It's Samsung's implementation of app standby - I think this is the most likely.
Does anyone have any concrete evidence as to what this setting actually does?
Furthermore, I've noticed that the "app optimization" implementation will change depending on if you have Smart Manager enabled or disabled. Not only that, but the battery sub menu layout (settings > battery) is also different depending on Smart Manager running or not. Has anyone else noticed this?
From what I can gather, the "app optimization" feature is there regardless if Smart Manager is enabled or disabled, but you can only manually select wether an app is optimised or not. Smart Manager appears to only provide automation of the process by monitoring which apps have not been used for x number of days and then changing the optimisation setting for each app for you.
Based on your screenshots, system apps can now be optimized by default?

Second screen is the 'Optimization Screen' under Setttings > Battery > Battery Usage > Battery Optimization. First one is from the 5.1.1 update, and the second is only present in Marshmallow Beta.
I don't think it's exactly an App Standby, as this keeps the apps 'unoptimized' if they have background services. Samsung's optimization only takes days since last usage for determining if an app should be optimized. Also, I think Samsung's optimization is more aggressive, like Greenify, an it shuts down apps shortly after user lefts them.
Oh, and it seems that you can't explicitly turn App Standby for an app, like you can do it with the Samsung alternative. Putting an app on/off on App Standby only activates App Standby for that app (If conditions are met) or disables it completely.

You're not quite correct on the screen shot front. All screenshots were taken from Android 6.0, the reason they're different is one was taken with Smart Manager running and the other was taken with Smart Manager disabled via Package Disabler.
What it does is that after an app has not been started for 3 days (this is configrable), it freezes (disables) it.
This is really problematic for small apps acting as unlocker of a main app and not supposed to be launched by user, as it prevents the main app to communicate with the unlocker app (bindServices() fails), preventing license verification to work.
This cancer acting in the back of apps used to only be possible on root devices, but Samsung generalized to mainstream devices.
I have disabled Location reporting / History, wifi scanning and location itself.
But when I check privacy gaurd I see Location services, Play services and android system using fine location, cell scan and wifi scan.
Can anyone suggest what to do to stop google from accesing my location completely?
Any one?

Here is an solution, it also improve your battery life
Google has been recommending developers use Google Play Services for Android Device location GPS functionality which allows for Google Play Services to batch GPS requests, hopefully preserving battery life. However, developers still have access to the native Android location APIs which they could leverage to request device location.
Example image:
The solution
Fortunately if you’re using Cyanogenmod on your device, you can use the built-in Privacy Guard feature to limit Google Play Services ability to wake the device, which will permit your device to stay asleep unless you’re actively using it. You can also keep Google Play from being able to keep the phone awake, which will allow your device to sleep quicker, preserving battery for Angry Birds and Pandora.
Keep in mind, there are pros and cons to everything.
So, it’s not my fault if your everything begins to suck once you do this. The easy thing is that you can make changes, then toss your phone in your pocket and check back later and see if there is a noticable improvement in battery life. You will see in the same UI I’ll show below a long listing of how many times permissions were requested and if they were denied or not.
Consider denied events to be your battery life getting longer and longer
So, step one for your GPS problem + better battery life, go to settings on your device. Go down to Privacy.
Go to Privacy Guard
Click the three dots / hamburger bun / overflow menu and check the box for Show built-in apps.
Wait…it takes a LOOONG time to list all of the apps. Browse down to Google Play Services and then long press on the icon.
Scroll down to the options and based on the pros/cons above, choose your destiny and toggle some of the options.
Restart phone.
DONE.
Google wont start the GPS like you requested
Your battery life is also improved because Google Play Services is disabled :good:
Extra info
To reserve back, turn the options back to ON you have disabled.
NOTE: You will get an error popup that Google Play Services stopped if you start your GPS for example "Navigation" like TomTom, Navigon, ETC.
I hope it helped.
Stanely thank you for your reply, however the original question I had asked was different.
Why is play services using cell scan and wifi scan even when location is completely off? What else do i need to disable to stop it?
Also denying keep awake and wakeup causes play services to crash.
Been finding a solution couple of years now.Is there any way to completely turn off google track my location?Google has always a way to track us,even location services are completely turned off.
Hi all,
ForceDoze allows you to forcefully enable Doze right after you turn off your screen, and on top of that, it also disables motion sensors so Doze stays active even if your device is not stationary while screen off. Doze will only deactivate periodically to execute maintenance jobs (like getting notifications, etc), otherwise it will remain fully active as long as your screen is off. This brings a lot more battery savings than standard Doze functionality, because even with screen off and Doze enabled, Doze is still periodically checking for movement, and disabling motion sensing improves battery life further.
Features:
Force enable Doze right after screen off
Disable motion sensors so Doze doesn't periodically poll the sensors to check if the device is stationary or not. This provides an additional boost to battery life
Whitelist apps so they don't get suspended or disabled when Doze mode is active
Doze battery stats: Shows you all the times your device has entered/exited Doze mode, and how much battery was available during those times. It will only work when ForceDoze service is turned on
Tasker support so you can now send com.suyashsrijan.forcedoze.DISABLE_FORCEDOZE broadcast intent to disable the ForceDoze service, or com.suyashsrijan.forcedoze.ENABLE_FORCEDOZE to enable the ForceDoze service
Tasker support for adding/removing apps from the Doze whitelist, so you can send com.suyashsrijan.forcedoze.ADD_WHITELIST broadcast intent along with packageName as the key and the package name you want to add as the value, in Extras. To remove the app from the whitelist, send the com.suyashsrijan.forcedoze.REMOVE_WHITELIST broadcast intent along with packageName as the key and the package name you want to remove as the value, in Extras. So for example, in Tasker, you can set Action as one of the intents above, and in Extras, add packageName:com.your.packagename and then save the task
Enable Doze mode on your device if your device OEM has disabled it (experimental)
No-root mode so you can use this app without root privileges (Requires you to execute an ADB command from your PC to grant it the android.permission.DUMP permission, instructions inside app and app description on Play Store)

Frequently asked questions:
Auto-rotate/brightness doesn't work after turning on the device
Please turn on Auto-rotate/brightness fix in settings and restart the ForceDoze service. If that doesn't work, turn on "Don't disable sensors on screen off" in app Settings instead
I have trouble getting push notifications from apps (ex: GMail)
Only high-priority push notifications are delivered to the app while the device is in Doze mode, normal-priority notifications (ex: from Gmail) are delivered during the Doze maintenance window or when you wake up the device. This is an OS restriction and there's nothing that can be done about it
My device doesn't turn on and I have to restart my device to fix
This is most probably being caused by disabling motion sensors, pretty common on LG devices. To fix, turn on "Don't disable sensors on screen off" in app Settings and restart the ForceDoze service
The app doesn't work properly for some reason
If you're rooted, then make sure SU requests made by the app aren't getting denied by the SU app on your phone. Your SU app will occasionally prompt you to grant or deny SU access to ForceDoze and if you deny or ignore the dialog, then the app will not work properly and will fail to do certain things, like re-enabling sensors after exiting Doze or turning off Doze properly after screen on
Please let me know if you spot any bugs or unwanted behavior, or would like me to add more features to the app!
Gotta try this!
I suppose you have already tested it before?
What are the results?

sensor re enabling
I have posted this on Reddit page..(if you didn't see the issues posted there)
app doesn't ask for su
works even without su or adb(greenify notifies me)
even after sometime screen turned on rotation and auto brightness don't work
enabling sensor service option in app , disables doze on motion
thank you
sorry for my English

If I'm correctly interpreting the OP, it isn't. Greenify does use the sensors, while this app isn't.
Installed it 5 minutes ago, will report back after a while of testing.
Edit: I have problems too with brightness not responding anymore, until I uncheck and turn autobrightness back on...

I've been using this for the past 2 days & it's been great. Reduced my idle drain rate from 3 to 4% per hr to 1.5 to 2% per hr.

Can we please have a whitelist option. Would love to use this , but still get notifications from Twitter and Snapchat. Thanks!
@ssrij I'm on 1.0.7 and I cant access the Google app store. I keep getting the "check your connection" error. What do I need to whitelist? Something is not waking back up properly. Don't have this issue with Greenify aggressive Doze.

First, kudos for a great app. Was looking for alternative to greenify since i consider it too aggressive for me. Just wanted to inform i have the same adaptive brightness bug. Must be ticked off and on for it to work.

I don't think whitelisting Play Store will work, but you can try adding com.android.vending to the app whitelist. I don't know why that happens, try clearing Play Store cache or force stopping it, and make sure your internet connection is active and working, that could also be a reason why
@ssrij I downloaded & installed the 1.0.8 apk. When I open the app, it says 1.0.7.
Do you know when a scrolling list of whitelist apps will be available?

Great idea !
But you should take some time to answer those questions about Greenify (difference, are they complementary or we should keep only one..), because we are used to it...
