Best Way Unmap Bixby Button - S8+ ??? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I have bxActions installed on my Verizon Galaxy S8+ and until yesterday when I updated to 9.0 Pie, my Bixby button was re-mapped. 2 Quick-presses turned on my flashlight. - - Now since the update it looks like I may be screwed which makes me pretty mad!!!
Can someone tell me if it's currently possible with Pie to "disable the Bixby button"? It appears that U.S. Phones cannot be rooted due to locked bootloaders...
It is extremely annoying that Samsung/Verizon felt they needed to screw up my phone usage!!! - - Thanks for any ideas on how to solve this problem!

I am using BxActions on Pie. I have the Pro version. I am on Verizon G955USQU5DSC1. I don't know why you can't use it.
I had the phone rooted in the past and you can still root your phone. Look in the ROMS forums. The Verizon ROMS forum has a lot of info as well. To be rooted you have to revert to Nougat. There is no root for Oreo or Pie. Also, I think your battery charge will be limited to 80%. The 80% on rooted seemed to last as long as 100% not rooted though. If you root, there is an Xposed app that will remap any button including Bixby. I forget the name of that app though.

Thanks a lot for your reply!!! I also have the pro version of BxActions....
I thought my BxActions was updated to the latest version as I had updated all apps that said "need to be updated" a couple days ago. Maybe BxActions wasn't on the list...??? Now that I've updated BxActions, I can use my Bixby button (Long Press) for my flashlight and I'm able to stop the annoying/useless Bixby! - - For some reason, the "2-quick presses" that I used to use doesn't work on that button anymore - - will use long press instead. - - Oh well, you've helped me to regain my "sanity"!!! Thanks very much for that!!!
I've rooted phones in the past, but have only done so when I felt Samsung/Verizon had me up against a wall. Since this is fixed, I'll most likely stay stock now. Thanks again very much!!!

Glad it worked out. I will say that I am using double tap for flashlight, single tap for back, and long press for recent apps. Not sure why it won't work. There may be some stuff you have to do with ADB to get all of the functions working. I can't remember for sure. I also looked at the app real quick and didn't see anything about it so that is probably not something you need to do.

Hey thanks for the add'l. info! - - My latest update for BxActions shows v. 6.01. I assume that's what you have...?
Thanks for the idea about the back button. I made a single press of Bixby button back as well now... Since I can't use a double-press within bxActions I've shortened the duration of a long press in the settings. That makes it a little easier. And it seems I've got Bixby locked down which is great! - - Thanks again!!!

Yes. I am on 6.01. Glad it is working.

It looks like the closest thing bx Actions does is open the camera app or act as the shutter button. I looked through the options and there is option to start a video. You may want to contact the dev. to see if he can implement that option.

You can use Tasker and Autotools to map the bixby button to whatever you want. Developer already has a profile created you can import.

[APP] [4.3+] Hold Back To Kill [ROOT]

Here is an app that allows you to hold your back button to kill the currently open application.
If popularity is high enough, I will update it with things like whitelist etc.
If you use a Samsung device, the only problem is that you can't show the MultiWindow bar anymore. I will work on a fix for it. I only made this because xposed doesn't work on Samsung Lollipop yet so this is what I wanted until it is. Once it works, I prolly won't ever touch this app again.
Thanks everyone!
UPDATE:
- Performance improvement
useful, thanks for this!!!!
Great job! I've been missing this feature since I switched to Lollipop. Thanks!

It seems to be working on CM12 but a little too good

I'm having a similar problem where even a single tap on the back button is closing the app. I have a rooted Galaxy S4 running Android 4.4

So this is happening when using the navbar and not the physical buttons?
It seems like the up action isn't being triggered. I could try to implement maybe a double click back to kill option. Ill try to debug on my 5.0 emulator that uses the navbar and see if i can figure anything out. Weird how that's happening.

That Stipid Bixby button

It doesn't seem to do anything since an update i got yesterday on ATT. Anyone else have the same issue ?
Before the update, Bixby button was working fine. After the update, button didn't work initially. I tried enabling swipe on homescreen to activate bixby and then tried button ( I had to double click instead of single click). after that, it worked but launching bixby with button became very slow. I'm still using double click to launch and I wish they push out a new update soon.
I'm also on AT&T
I too have this problem. In my case, even two quick presses in succession fails more often than it succeeds.

Are you on AT&T as well ? I have the same problem too. Swipe on home screen works well for now. It takes about a second to load but using button IF I successfully launch bixby, it takes about 4-5 seconds to launch. Before the update, it was instantaneous.
One thing I noticed is if I disable breifing in Bixby cards, performance improved. Try and see if it works
Edit: I can confirm that after disabling breifing, bixby works well.

I am not--T-Mobile here.
Agreed: disabling the 3 cards I had running gets the double press to work reliably. However, doesn't that defeat the purpose of Bixby (what little there is right now)?
Double tab does the trick. Is new after the latest update.

oh yeah I agree. It's just a temp fix till they push update. They introduced this bug after update...so they should fix it soon
I'm also on T-Mobile and having this issue (just got my S8+ yesterday). I was going to return the phone to T-Mobile for are placement until I found this post. Now I know that I have to wait for an update to fix it as a new phone would exhibit the same problem after I did the update.
New update was push out to stop people from remapping bixiby button and stop accidental pressing of it.
So its now a double click.
Best thing is to have online chats with samsung and complain about this. If enough people do it, they will oush out an update to fix it.
Verizon here. I have noticed mine works with double clicking Bixby about 60% of the time, and 30% of the time it works with a single click. Remaining 10% being me left holding the phone staring at the home screen waiting.
The annoying bit is that it's inconsistent, so when a single click decides to work it opens and then immediately closes if I double clicked it.
Double press and wait a second or two before it decides to actually show up ?
What does Stipid mean?

Uh which one? I see like 4. I'm going to try this on my wife's s8. She wants it to open camera. I disabled all the Bixby crap on my s8+ and I like it that way. Samsung is as bad as the government these days with their cramming stuff down people's throats. Great phones though

utter waste of time. If this is so far off being ready they should have excluded it and added it to the note 8 or allow it to be mapped to something usable in the meantime.
Worked fine for me in the UK before the update. Now its a double tap with varying degrees of content.
yesterday I got an update on AT&T( mifhr be rhe red tint fix). Post update, bixby button is working fine

A quick access to my calander, imp email, uber, S health.
Things bixby does better than google:
Good integration with work email and events from work calender, twitter also flipboard feed
Things google does better than bixby:
Google on tap and stories related to my previous search. I absolutely love google on tap, especially when tracking packages and good integration with my gmail accounts.
I don't wanna pick one over other. I like and use both of them
I click the Bixby and it takes a few seconds each time to load and refresh, no Google integration (Keep, Waze, etc...) another half baked Samsung idea they will insist on tormenting us with.

Disabling Bixby user Package Dis-abler Pro?

Has anyone tried completely disabling Bixby and all its related apps? I am wondering if you use the BixRemap app and then disable Bixby Completely it will be like it was never installed on the phone.
I may take a crack at it to see if it will work but wanted to see if anyone had disable the app itself yet and if that caused any issues.
Thanks!
UpDate: I disabled ALL of the bixby stuff have not run into any issues so far, but it does break remapping the button, basically the button is worthless now. Wish they would just let us use it for whatever we want like the Active button is.
The new methods of remapping rely on watching when Bixby launches, not the actual button press. So, if Bixby never launches, the current remap apps cannot work

The downside of that one is you have to disable secure startup. My company mandates that is turned on due to sensitive material so I'm kind of out of luck. It works great if you don't need secure startup turned on.

My phone's stock firmware broke my power button

Hello everyone. I would like to know if anyone experienced this, and if anyone has a solution (or at least an idea why).
The power button of my Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) (SM-A750G) phone does not work at unlocking the screen (if it works in the rest of the functions such as opening the shutdown menu, entering recovery, etc.) when I am using stock firmware, but it works perfectly when using a GSI or any other custom OS.
Do you have any idea what could happen? It should be noted that this happened to me when my phone had the stock firmware and I had never modified my equipment at all... It just happened suddenly and for that reason I switched to a GSI. But now I would like to use the stock firmware, but I will not be able to do it with this "bug".
Thanks 4 the help
You mean unlocking or just turning the screen on an unlocked phone?
The app DoubleTap does away with using any buttons to turn the screen on/off. Simply 2x tap it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...apk&pcampaignid=APPU_1_oD7zX7-SMMvesAWsh5_ADA

That's strange. Have you tried remapping the button? Are there options to do so in settings?
Possibly another 3rd party apk remapped without you being aware of it?
I been using this app for over a year. To spite the ad warnings, it has none. Uses almost zero battery, never connects with the internet and is rock solid stable. Saves button life just keep the screen pointed away from your flesh when in your pocket to avoid accidentally taps.
Note: I never gave it administrator privileges as I never use a lock screen. So not sure about its behavior in that mode of operation.

I tried the app a few moments ago and it seems to work fine, the flesh thing is apparently configurable (assign the volume key, which is the most similar).
Regarding the mapping or 3rd party apks using the button, I see it almost impossible, not only because I don't use any app of this type (that reassigns keys) but in completely clean installations of stock firmware this happens to me (and I don't have any option key remapping that I know of).
It's very weird, at least for me. Because not only does it "break" to unlock, but it is only with stock firmware and even if I change the kernel (I tried using the quantum kernel) the key does not work when turning on the screen. But with the GSI it works without problems.
I even googled questions related to Always in display, power or something similar and nothing, there seems to be no conflicts.

Personally, the one that I liked the most (and the one that works best) is the Google official (Android 10): https://developer.android.com/topic/generic-system-image/releases But one problem is that it is very outdated.
Anyway, here is a list of some GSIs that you can check and test which one works on your device: https://github.com/phhusson/treble_experimentations/wiki/Generic-System-Image-(GSI)-list

EXACTLY same problem here. I will not repet your words, I'll just say you described EXACTLY what is happening with my phone, a Galaxy A7 2018 (128GB RAM, Brazilian model - A750G/DS).
I can confirm that:
1 - Problem of screen never turning on after being turned off for the first time happens at all stock ROMs. Tried at android 10, downgraded to 9, couldn't downgrade to 8 because odin would not write the image, but the problem persisted on ALL stock ROMs up untill now.
2 - Problem DOES NOT happen at the TWRP recovery. Flashed TWRP just now, so I can flash a GSI, and I can turn the screen on or off as many times as I wish at TWRP screen, without any problem.
These informations corroborate, almost without a shadow of doubt, the idea that this is actually a software problem, not a hardware one. I'm gonna flash the google 10 GSI now, with quantum kernel V3 (seems to be a requirement, I would like to make as litle changes as possible) and post the results.

Try this. You need flash a "GSI Boot Fix" to use a GSI on A750.

Question New Z Flip 3 Owner - Little things I can't get to work

I had given up on trying to make all of Androids little features work as they should. Now that I have picked up the Z Flip 3 I have a new found desire to figure out how to use the phone and the features that are giving me issues.
Issue 1 - The screen saver when charging is not working. I've tried my dock, and direct power plug in. No go on any of the screen savers- they simply do not show up. How can I fix or trouble shoot?
2- Please tell me it's possible to re-map the side power button to open the Google assistant. I spend a couple hours on this today and had no success. I tried downloading the assistant app so I could open it, but Samsung has hidden it in the pop up list of apps that can substitute the Bixby option. Same question - how to make it work.
3- I really want nothing to do with the Samsung apps. Is there any way to disable or otherwise get rid of them? Without rooting. Is rooting even possible? I don't really want to start with that again, but will if it comes to it I suppose.
I am trying not to waste days figuring out how to make the phone mine. It seems like everything I want, I can't make happen. So frustrating. Thanks for listening and thanks in advance for any help/guidance/resources etc.
Edited to add - this is a Google FI Samsung phone. I purchased it from Google.

Thanks! I tried it out, then purchased the button remapper app. It's working great!
I'll sit down and do the other suggestion also. Wish I didn't have to remove things and hope it doesn't break others in the process.
Thx again

Only disable the apps you can see an icon for in the launcher and those you are absolutely sure accompany them (ie. Stuff plainly named Bixby) and you'll be fine.
Got it! Thank you!! Will update when I've had the time to mess with it.
On another note- I can't for the life of me get the screen saver when charging to work. It's not that I'm dying to use that feature out of necessity, but it's driving me nuts that such a simple task is, simply not working. lol. I need to let it go.
