I was looking at my girlfriends phone to compare some battery stats and was astounded to see that Google play services was draining 45% of the battery.
As it's not my phone don't really have the time to do any serious diagnostics at the moment, and wanted to know if anyone had/had solved a similar issue?

Haha I am a lifelong android user, just haven't had a Google phone since my 6p.
Just wondering if there are any known issues as I wont have the opportunity to do the gsam/betterbatterystats debug that I would otherwise do as it's my girlfriends phone
Also the fact its draining 2% a minute when in use is insane :silly:
Try the beta and see if that helps.
Usually, google play services drains are related to sync. The account/google play/other google service is trying to sync but not connecting, so it just continually tries to reconnect. Try turning off sync and see if the problem goes away. It might be syncing in areas with weak signal is causing the problem.
I just checked my Pixel 3 and Google Play Services does not show up on my battery usage chart. Only Nova Launcher (3%), Google Play Store (2%), Outlook (2%) and BlueMail (1%). I have been trying out different email programs for the last couple of hours and just ran the current security upgrade.

You have show system apps by hitting the 3 dots, although the problem hasn't come back since playing with some settings and a reboot

I've been playing with random ROMs recently and have noticed my 'roids acting up.
Upon install of a new kernel/ROM, I bypass the Android/Google services setup pages that show up on initial boot. That gives me the baseline battery drain. It's only when I start to use Google services (like the Market) that it requires me to activate via a Google acct. After the activation, I see the increased battery drain.
Specifically, my battery discharge increases ~2.7x (idle) after I provide my Google account information to access the Market. After I provide the account creds, the GMail app starts working and I receive notifications of new emails.
I've got a theory that the GMail app or another Google app is polling/pulling instead of using the GMail/Google service to push the data and that this is using additional CPU.
Is this theory correct? Has anyone else seen this behavior?
P.S. My service provider, Verizon, uses a NAT (IP 10.xxx). I can't see how any external service can push anything through a NAT unless it has special access through the NAT. Can Google?
P.S.S. I know I can disable background data and auto-sync via Settings--> Accounts & Sync. It seems to fix the problem but I can't pin it down specifically to an app/service.

2 things I've done recently seem to have "removed" Google services from my battery usage when idle.
1.Using Titanium Backup/Menu/Market Tools/Market Auto Updates/Deselect all and Save auto Updates configuration.
2.Go Maps/More/Location History and then press the back button and go Menu/Settings /Location reporting/Location Reporting-Do not update your location+disable Location history+sign out of Latitude.The first 2 I've always done but signing out of Latitude seemed to make the difference.(Disable both Check ins).
There are obviously the other usual battery saving settings but these 2 got rid of Google Services.

If you have no other regular apps working the background, google services as gmail or gtalk or contacts sync or calendar will surely increase battery usage, but it should be in the dimension of 2.7 times.
Battery life
Battery now down to 26% from full with 2d 1h 48m on battery.Google services has gone from 80%+ to 2%.Couple of screenshots attached.This Google services thing is not the only answer to battery life problems but there's always something running in the background doing the damage.HTH.
I've noticed that when I've got my EVO active on WiFi there's some significant network traffic between it and Google even when the device seems idle. I also have a cell phone repeater in my basement that shows activity when I so much as hit the power button to unlock the phone. Feels like there's stuff going on with some of those apps that maybe excessive and, yeah, that could impact battery drain. It certainly can't be good for it.

After installing the latest edition of Google Maps, I noticed that it was using between 13-18% of my battery (after approx. 9 hours off the charger). I never opened Maps or Navigation, and when looking at its battery use, it's "stay awake" time was 0s.
I do have Google location services enabled, but as I said, I never used the Maps app or any other application that would require the use of standalone GPS services. And I always keep standalone (and VZW) location services off unless navigating. This was never a problem on older versions of Google Maps - is anyone else having this problem?
I also noticed my battery life was incrementally worse with this happening, which makes sense seeing as Google Maps ranks third behind Cell Standby and Screen on my battery usage log.
Any information or advice would be much appreciated!

All apps that use Location Services at all will show up as "Maps" in battery stats, so it can be really tricky to figure out which app is actually causing the problem. It's most likely an updated third-party app that has location permissions. Have you updated any other apps recently?
Recently, this happened to me with 1Weather - their update had some bug that caused the LocationServices service to run continuously, which led to Maps taking up the majority of my battery without using it. Uninstalled, and that fixed the problem.

That's interesting. The only apps I have that could have had location settings turned on were Facebook (chat), Flixster and Chrome. I turned off the location in Facebook chat, and the Flixster app says it uses network location only, so that shouldn't be an issue, right?
Also, I left location on for Chrome seeing as that would be the main benefit to keeping Google location services on.
I'll report back, hopefully the culprit was Facebook chat.
As a side not, uninstalling the Google Maps updates seems to have solved the problem, but I'd rather have the most up-to-date version of Maps.
If anyone else has any thoughts, I would really appreciate hearing them!
I froze maps and Google now and went from almost constant awake times overnight to nothing. Was losing 20% overnight sometimes. I don't use Google now and un freeze maps when I need navigation.

Thanks for the info on this, I've been wondering what's up with the maps battery usage.
Just been at my desk in the office all day, no maps use, nothing at all that calls for location.
Google Play Services 39% of battery use
2 hours and 1 minutes of GPS use
Dunno what to do, but clearly Play services has hit up location services for almost 1/3 the time my phones been off the charger today.

some report that this might be an issue with GNow. You might wanna turn that off/reboot and see if it helps. So far I didnt encounter that.
My google play services has been on for 22% . Keep awake time 8 hours 20 mins!
I have now turned google now off. Also note my location is set to battery saving mode too.
Disable Google location reporting and history. Saves a bundle.
Google now has never been enabled on my phone and location reporting has always been off as well.
Since I've totally disabled location services its used another 2 hours of GPS.

How do you disable Google Now?
I think Google is doing something on the back end with google play services. I noticed it eating my battery and keeping my phone awake yesterday. I believe there is a google play services update that was pushed out as well. I hope this gets sorted out soon.
I've looked around a bunch and it seems like a lot of people are having a problem with terrible battery drain after the last two android updates. I'm on Verizon, unrooted, stock GS3. Ever since the update to 4.4 I've been hit with Google Services or Google Play Services running non-stop. My phone battery will discharge from 100% to critical in less the 4 hours without any use. The usual tricks of killing the process, restarting the phone and factory resetting have not worked. This has gotten ridiculous. Has anyone come up with any way to fix the sticking processes? Any kind of update at all? I'm extremely frustrated. I've had this phone for 2 years with no battery drain problems. Then I took the first 4.4 update and I started getting problems. Now with the newest update its much worse. Nothing will stop Google Services from running constantly. I can't wait to get an upgrade at this point.

From what I've read on not just here, but for other phones...the usual culprit is location services via google now. The best way to test this is to turn off google now (which will just give you the standard pre jb google search) and see if that calms things down. If you want google now...try turning off location reporting in google''s location settings. Additionally, turn off syncing to things under the google account that you don't necessary need to sync constantly.

I kept reading more forum posts yesterday, and I am fairly confident that I found the correct answer for my phone. I've never had a problem before with the location services draining my battery. The culprit is the "OK Google" voice detection constantly listening. Ever since I turned that off, my battery usage has returned to normal. Immediately I noticed a difference in the phone's performance and the battery percentage didn't drain while I was watching it. This makes sense too with the timing of the update and my battery drain. KitKat brought this feature to the GS3 and that is precisely when my battery started to be sucked dry. Whereas before, Google services was listed as 40-60% of my battery usage, it's now down to 15%. The good thing with turning this off is I never used the feature, unlike location services that are baked into everything and actually useful to me. Thanks for the help.
I have a Pixel 2 64 GB, and I've been seeing astounding battery drain by Google Play Services lately (I believe it started with the November OTA update, but I can't be 100% sure). Some days are worse than others, and on those days Play Services will be responsible for 30% or more of the battery usage. I haven't been able to pin down when it happens, other than that disabling location services doesn't seem to affect it. Deleting data for Google Play Services as well as the Google app, and rebooting the phone, seems to fix the issue for a day or two (during which I'll get fantastic battery life), but then it comes back.
Are there any other fixes I could try? Anyone experiencing similar issues?

Thanks! Bluetooth is off, but wifi scanning was turned on. I'll report back here if I see any effect at all.
I'm having the same issue. Factory reset didn't resolve the issue. Giving the scanning off a try.
Same here... does not have a pixel phone but latest oneplus. google play service goes to nearly 30 % in GSAM monitor. I have searched in web and someone says that google updates play service in the background in the last days. and many, many users are talking about massive battery drain because of google play service.
What can we do?
PS: Wifi seraching is off, bluetooth, too... no difference!!

Hi, OP here again. So, yesterday, with Wi-Fi Scanning turned off, Play Services seemed to behave well on my phone—ended up with about 3% of total battery usage at the end of the day (~ 15 hours). Hopefully it goes just as well today.
Is turning off WiFi scanning the Settings > WiFi > WiFi Preferences and the three options..
-Turn on WiFi automatically
-Connect to Open Networks
-Open Network Notifications
Or is that something else?
Today my Google Play Services ballooned back up to > 20% usage

It's in location settings.
Dropping by to say that I am experiencing the same thing, only when I have wifi turned on. I'm fairly confident that it's caused by wifi.

It's not wifi, it's all sync activity that happen when connected to wifi,like Google backup and photo backup...
Whats funny is that while having problems with Play Services on my Pixel 2, my Pixel XL 2016 has been a champ. Until I re-activated it as a phone on Project Fi, now Play Services is starting to go beserk. Not sure if it just needed a few moments, or if this is an all day thing that will just follow me around no matter what phone I use.

Dropping by AGAIN to confirm that its happening with these conditions:
- The drain never happens when I'm off wifi
- Drain stops when I reboot the phone
- After I reboot the phone I can get on wifi without drain
- When I connect the charger to the phone while on wifi it starts the Google Play Services drain again
I've tested this sequence for almost a whole week now and I'm fairly confident in my findings, I do this type of **** for a living. Try it yourselves.

Are you on Project Fi?
I am, so I called them and asked for escalation and told them it follows me on my 2016 Pixel XL and factory resets don't do anything. They asked for a bug report so they could send it to the engineers. Hopefully they will get back to me.
Google Play Services is still API 23 here.
It should be updated to API 26 for Oreo users and API 27 for Oreo 8.1 DP users.......

I don't know what this means.....
Anyway, my issues seemed to have vanished. I'm finally experiencing all that excellent battery life people have been talking about.
I don't know if it's something Google did on their end that is now changed, or if it's the following:
-On my Google Now feed, there was a ton of stuff checked in the "you showed interest" section. Every NFL team, several political figures, a few movie franchises, and it kept going. It was like 5 minutes of unchecking stuff.
-I uninstalled Pandora. Even without firing up the app after a boot, it was causing issues.
I've had play services randomly draining battery with no real understanding why. I did toggle off its background activity and haven't had it since
