Hello everyone,
i searched for this topic and found several threads without an answer, but all of them were years old, so heres my hope that things have changed over the years (And that Android finally catches up with what i would consider basic functionality and damn, even iPhones can do it...)
Im looking for a backupsolution directly to my PC. A tool for either my PC (Both Windows of Linux would be fine) or my phone (which is a rooted LG G4 with the last, and therefore very old, official Lineage OS (i intend to upgrade to something newer.) I want to backup every app including appdata, my contacs, sms and mediafiles.
I dont have a lot of space left on my phone which rules out any backupsolution that backs up to my phone. Which means Titanium Backup (which besides looking ugly and not very userfriendly by my usual standards for a user interface but the Pro version can apparently otherwise do everything i want) or Nandroidbackups (assuming that they dont fully backup my phone including the rom and therefore would be unusuable for migration to a new Rom) are out. Also the need to manually copy this over after the backup smacks me as slighly cobbled together, but well that might be just me.
I also dont want to use any internetbased solution. Both for ideological and paranoia reasons. Its my data and i dont intend to giving it to others. Therefore any cloudbased services are out.
Which leaves me with backing up directly to my PC. When i started looking for such a soltion i thought that would be easyly solved since it is such a basic usecase. But oh boy how wrong i was.
What i have found so far:
Syncdroid: Cant backup Apps+Appdata.
Helium: endless spinning wheel while checking root (even though i triplechecked, helium HAS root) and without root i cant backup two thirds of the apps i want to backup like all my instant messaging apps). Apparently the issues with root are known but the Devs are silent.
Apowersoft ApowerManager: Is supposedly able to do what i want BUT doesnt have a trial so i could test it (the free version only allows backups but no restore or anything which comes down to a trust issue) and its simply to expensive (20$ per month with the current superduperspecialpricejustforyouandjustnowoffer) to just buy blindfolded. Also again Trustissues for a tool this expensive without a way to fully try before...
So in conclusion: Do i have to throw away my LG G4 and switch to an iPhone to get this basic functionality or did i just overlook something (maybe a hidden feature in Titanium Backup)?
Bonuspoints if this works over wifi and can be automated (like PC is running, PC suite pings phone, finds phone and updates the backup)

I've upgraded my SGS (Gingerbread) to the ICS ROM. This caused me to loose a lot. Made a nandroid backup (cwm) before proceeding and figured I would be able to get stuff back from it. Well... that's partially correct, could get some apps + settings back, some apps w/o settings and some things not at all.
There's only 2 major things left I really need. My SMS database and battle.net mobile authenticator. The authenticator was restored using appextractor or titanium backup pro. Restoration of the app went fine, but it lost it's key and is thus quite useless as I can't use it to log on.
Is there some hidden place it might store it's serial? If I can't restore it I'll have to go through a procedure to have it removed by Blizzard, which is somewhat cumbersome.
Don't want to restore an entire back-up (ie go back to gingerbread) as several apps have already been re-setup (amongst which my banking app which wasn't restored with it's data either causing me to have to re-subscribe/authenticate it and google authenticator (which btw came by out of backup fine, including it's accounts thus)).
Also am unable to find the SMS database. I have extracted the data.img with unyaffs, but there is no database under the usual com.android.providers.telephony. Samsung probably uses a custom app/location for the database, but haven't been able to find it. Neither titanium backup pro nor appextractor are able to restore the SMS's. Then again, they don't restore wireless either, but since I can just read the wifi/bcm_supp.conf file I don't really care . Just find it strange it doesn't restore whilst the file is that accessible, might be a non-default location as well however...
In case it matters, I run linux >90% of the time. Quite familiar with it, quite new to phones tho' . I do have windows so whatever tools might be required, both OS's are accessible to me.

I currently own a LG E900 and just recently I noticed a little scratch on the display. I know this is gorilla glass and it worked really great for more than a year and I don't even know how the scratch got there, but I thought that it might be time to upgrade.
I know that most stuff is synced using Windows Live but there are still a couple of things where I am not sure:
1. What about contacts where I linked their Facebook, Twitter and Windows Live profiles? If they do not have the same name in Facebook and Windows Live, will their linking be preserved?
2. Is it possible to transfer stored data from apps and games? I mostly care about my saved progress from e.g. angry birds, can you transfer that without being banned or so from Xbox Live for cheating?
3. Zune creates full backups and I guess this would be the best you can get, but can you restore them onto another device (I am considering buying either another LG E900 or a HTC Titan 2, but this thread should not be about which phone to chose right now) or is this somehow tied to the IMIE?
All of your contacts are synced from their various accounts. None are currently stored on the phone. Your linked contacts will link if the names are the same. If names differ, you'll have to relink as necessary.
Game and application data cannot be transferred to the new phone unless said game/app offers a cloud backup option. XBoxLive games will remember scores, but I'm not sure about progress.
To my knowledge, a backup can only be restored to the phone it was made from. This means you can't even get the same model and restore from a different backup. Sucky, I know.
That is correct. Manually (using an app like Root Webserver or WPDM), you could back up your Angry Birds isolated storage folder and then restore it on the new phone (if you get another phone that you can achieve at least root-unlock with). I don't believe you're at risk of getting flagged for cheating unless you try to *edit* those game files.

Is root-unlock the same as interop-unlock?
No. Interop-unlock can allow apps to gain additional privileges, possibly including TCB privileges ("root" if it were a Unix-like OS; this is what's meant by "root unlock"). However, by default interop-unlock does not grant those permissions.
Root unlock is most commonly gained through either using interop-unlock on a supported device to then install WP7 Root Tools, or by using a full-unlocked custom ROM (full-unlock includes root-unlock).
Thanks, I guess I will be able to figure out the rest on my own since interop-unlock seems to be prettt easy on LG devices.
Just to be sure, if I copy the Isolated Storage from a game to my PC and back onto a different phone, that will still work?

Angry Birds does not seem to require phone or owner identity privileges, so I doubt it is.
Also, keep in mind that the Titan II has no unlock at all yet - you couldn't get your files back on it then.
I've just put a custom ROM on my Omnia 7 and I'm very pleased with it.
But I left some stuff back on my old installation, which I backed-up fully before I updated (using Windows Phone Back-up Tool 1.9). I'm sure I've read that there are complexities when working with back-ups and custom ROMS.
What I'd like to do is get my photos and videos off the old install, as well as my old non-syncable OneNote notebook.
Can anyone advise? I don't suppose I can load the backed-up image into a virtual machine somehow?

Backups are device-specific; you can't even restore one to another device of the same model. Why you would re-imag eyour phone without first syncing off pictures and such, I really don't know, but if you did and you want to access them, the only way to do so is to restore that backup to the device it was made from. People have been trying to crack the backup files for about as long as the OS has existed. We may succeed some day, but this is probably not that day.
So moreover, can I use Zune to back-up the phone as it is now (with a custom ROM on it, identifying it as a Nokia even though it's not)? I'm after a way to jump between the two images really, as I still don't know how to get the local OneNote data but I want to keep using 7.8 for a bit to test it out.

Hi all, I'm new to Motorola and have come across something that I am unsure about and could use some reassurance on. Up to now all my devices had been Samsung.
On all my past devices I was able to use various tools (Titanium Pro, Nandroid Manager Pro, Device ID changer ROOT etc) to edit my "android_id" string so that my ID remained the same through ROM flashes. I have never done it manually, in fact, after a bit of digging, I only found out where it is located tonight.
Thus far on my Moto I have tried with Nandroid Manager Pro and a couple of Play Store free alternatives. None have met with any success, the ID is stubbornly staying as it was when I first activated it. This has caused the inevitable headache with a couple of applications whose data I am trying to transfer across from one of my Samsungs (it is on KitKat, too). For example, Viber, it seems to be one of the apps that identifies you via your ID so when it sees a new one it basically has a panic attack crashes and won't operate unless you wipe the data you tried to flash. (Viber offer no proper backup alternative either, unlike Whatsapp )
Earlier I mentioned how I found out where the string with the ID is stored so I was wondering, is there any reason why I can't edit this string manually using a database editor?
Is there a Motorola reason why none of the previous working options work? Does Moto protect the string somehow, much like Win XP file protection? If Moto is protecting it, would a Nandroid save me from any bricks?? :fingers-crossed:

[DISCUSSION] Root safety, phone migration solutions & alternatives to Titanium Backup
So, I've finally received a shiny and new S8 (Exynos).
And quickly enough, I searched XDA & Google to see if there's a stable root solution.
The main reasons I'd like root (& TWRP recovery) for are:
Topmost priority: to properly migrate my apps & data from my current phone (S6) using Titanium backup, so I can start using the new one as my main device.
Giving me the option to choose a custom ROM, when/if I'll find the right one for me.
You can never know when you'll need an app that requires root access.
Having the option to always have a full image backup of the entire device (TWRP).
Debloating the device by freezing/removing unwanted apps (freezing them with Titanium Backup)
I remember that I had to root my device in order to record phone calls (which is very important for me) - I'm not even sure what its like with the S8, but this could also be a reason to root.
After reading, and watching several videos, I understand that there are quite a few things to be worried about:
The chance of bricking your device, as the current rooting solution is immature (Is it? this one scares me the most)
Losing secure folders/Samsung Pay/Samsung Health, etc. (I'd hate to lose Secure Folders - but I'm sure that I can find alternative solutions, I'd prefer not to lose Samsung Pay & Samsung health, but I can live without them).

Since I really want to migrate to the new phone, I've looked for options to safely copy the data without having root:
CloneIT: Didnt migrate the apps' data.
Helium: Apps were backuped, but couldnt restore them. many of my apps are not supported by Helium.
Smart Switch: Not even sure if it can migrate apps' data or not, but unfortunately - it didnt even run properly on my S6, once installed - there's a splash screen coming up, that vanishes after couple of seconds. I've read posts of other users complaining about this very same behavior. couldn't find a solution to make it run. it works find on the S8.
I googled, and found that there are a bunch of companies that sell complete migration tools (that require PC/Mac), did anyone check any of these, and can share a honest review?
None of them is free for use/download.

I've always rooted my phones, so being root-less is a bit new to me. should I just take the chance and root it?
Both Android and TouchWiz are quite mature now, allowing us to enjoy a smooth and slick operation - when combined with the powerful hardware the S8 is equipped with, right out of the box.
What are your reasons for rooting?
How did all of your migrate your phones? started everything from scratch?
If not - how did you migrate from your previous phone?
Is the current rooting solution safe enough? And if its not - and we'll wait until a 'safe' rooting solution is out - how can we keep our apps & data continuously (in my case: S6--> Non rooted S8 --> Rooted S8)?
Does any of the paid solutions I listed above really work?
Would love to hear your thoughts and advises.
I rooted my phone because I would like to customize my own phone as it is mine. DriveDroid, FolderMount, Titanium Backup, smartdisk, and so on. It doesn't matter how good a phone is without root, for me, it is garbage if I cannot customize it. Get a unrootable phone just as powerful as the desktop PC, and I'll find it garbage regardless of smoothness.
Well put me down for wondering if any of these without root will restore app data....
