[Q] Honor 6 Plus - worthy update for OnePlus One?

Hi All
I haven’t found a specific forum for Honor 6 plus but I hope to find some answers to my questions here
Currently I have OnePlus One and I look at Honor 6 Plus for an upgrade.
The selling point for me is camera performance. I expect H6+ to have less noise and be general better all-rounder camera.
I know that the performance will be slightly worse than OPO and video quality will be worse as well (OPO has 4k recording and [email protected] and [email protected]).
But…
Can you help me if H6+ will be worthy upgrade for somebody into photography?
1. How it is behaving in general usage (shutters, hick ups, performance issues, software issues – battery drains etc…,)?
2. Lollipop update – forecast?
3. Overall phone quality – any issues with it? Bad pixels, light leaks on the screen, any bend-gates/antenna-gates, my-phone-tries-to-kill-me-gates?
4. How is the camera – photo quality, noise levels on dark photos, does it have any manual settings? Or if not in stock version are they accessible from 3rd party apps? (ie.on OPO using app “Camera FV-5” I have the access to manual ISO and exposure time settings, is this possible in H6+?)
5. 3D photos – since the H6+ has two cameras this technically should be possible – is it?
6. RAW shooting – any chances?
7. Can apps be fully installed on SD card? I have noticed that my Samsung tablet moves only small bits of the app to SD card while my previous Tegra tabled moved whole app there (both were on 4.4 KK) – how does it work on H6+?
8. File manager – since KitKat security restrictions crippled SD card functionality I understand that (without rooting) file managers cannot modify SD card unless they are built in the ROM and seen by the system as core app. Is there any built in file manager in H6+ able to create and delete files from SD card?
9. USB OTG – does H6+ supports USB OTG for USB drives/keyboards/mice? My typical scenario I take photos on my SLR, I transfer them to my phone SD card , I share them from my phone. Will it work for me using H6+?
10. Is it powerful enough to play demanding 3D games like KOTOR for example?
11. Buy now or wait for something on Kirin 935? Or for the price fall? Any fortune-tellers around?

1. I think it's the best phone I've had since my first cell phone in mid-80's , no freezes etc. Long battery time, charge 2-3 times a week, but I' work at home and are out of the building a few times a week, or while on holiday. Don't use it for music, but Surveillance(Blue Iris) and IP-Cam viewer, booking app, and remote controlling my officePC.
2. Lollipop will arrive in July/August I think. Nothing I think is worth waiting for, have 5.0 on my Tab S, and there are some bugs...
3 Nothing, got the phone in February-15.
4. Camera is OK, HDR, Super night,Panorama etc. I have an M43 from Olympus, so it does not bother me.. ISO , WB, smile detect and touch for focus,GPS,and timer functions+ some watermarks and small adjustments can be made, no manual shutter/aperture. Seen an Oppo which looked better , at least on the screen..
5. No 3D in the Honor app
6. No RAW....

I am looking at this phone, may I ask which country you are in, and if you are finding there is too much chinese and not enough English? And was it easy enough to get google play services and play store working on?

Located in Norway. Downloaded Google Play/updated it with the English version.(The GPlay Icon is the same in Chinese), and the phone updated most apps by itself to English versions. I have chosen Norwegian as language, and almost all menus are in that language, else in English. Hivoice is in Chinese, so voice control does not work(or I have not tried, can't read chinese). HiCloud/cloud+ does not work, annoying, so I have manually set up backups to other drives. This also means you have to download Themes manually, but no big deal for me. There are a few Huawei Apps, forums, etc, all in Chinese. I think the access to Cloud+ and Hivoice is most annoying, as it reminds me to do backups I can't do because I'm denied access to the Cloud+.....
Besides that, after using it since February, I'm very pleased, it's my all time favourite phone since mid-80's , Owned most brands, Motorola,Philips, Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, HTC,Cubot(Apollo), and now Honor....... And, there will be a Lollipop update late summer for it...

kingroot will root the phone without unlocking the boot loader. then you can use rom toolbox to freeze/disable the stupid system apps. you can get the playstore from the huawei appstore, then kill the appstore. from the miui website you can get the google apps apk installer for google contacts sync. then just use a third party launcher and you have a fairly stock android experience with all of huawei honor6s great hardware

Bought today from Amazon UK, awesome phone. Been on it all day and still got 69% battery ( I'm a heavy user ) lots of media and live streaming playback etc. Phone came with virtually vanilla style setup ( all google apps installed ) very few bloatware so its been a dream start. Camera is good ( not as good as Sony z3 but holds its own. Performance is very snappy and I've not had any lag on anything and also feel no need to root as of yet as all is very good as it is.
Coming previously from a nexus 4 this phone is very good indeed.

I got one from amazon as well. Good thing is that all of bloatware can be uninstalled (not hidden) I managed to get rid of all of it with no problem.
On various reviews I read that it has no headphones in the box but mine come bundled with a pair - haven't tried its quality but they look rather basic with only one button. Also in the box I had two screen savers for front and rear. Still a puzzling thing is that somebody on the amazon claimed that he received his with touchplus screen protector!?!? I wish to have one but it is almost impossible to buy. How about you? Did you get one as well?

Nah same as you mate, headphones are basic yes so I use my own. I got the 32gb version. The apps I didn't want I could actually uninstall so thats a bonus for me I guess. This phones battery is WOW still going and got 35% watched fa cup, golf, boxing as well as faceache and twitter use........ Its running on Duracell lol.

Those looking for this device can get the 32GB NFC international version in any of the 3 colours from the manufacturer and a few dealers on eBay. They will load language and radio bands to suit you needs. Must say do like the Gold version..So worth a look on eBay people.

Do you have "cloud problem" as well?
I have been testing my H6+ camera further and I have noticed that test stock camera delivers superb quality on low light shots but its struggle with clouds and end results is very grainy. Even well below 100% magnification you can see the noise. But on the other hand using third part app like my beloved FV-5 solves the problem and clouds looks much better even fully zoomed.
Therefore I believe that this is compression algorithm issue only within Honor camera app. My stock firmware is B141. What's yours?

Mate 9 Pro Daydream

I've updated my L29-c636 to the latest 181 version. I see that daydream vr been installed, so I bought the Daydream View headset. Went through the setup process, only to find that I get a black screen when I'm told to put the phone in the vr headset. Daydream seems to be working partially as I can hear some birds from the phone's speakers. I can increase or decrease the volume using the remotre, and there is an x and settings cog in either of the upper corners. Other than that though, nothing, nada: black screen only.
Anyone else have a similar experience?

Try firmware finder, it seems like 181 is authenticated.

I used firmware finder app to upgrade to LON-L29C636B181 (still on locked bootloader), which worked fine. No Daydream VR controller yet, so couldn't get past the controller pairing menu.

Cool, if you do get one, see if you can view something. Btw, I read someone had used another phone to simulate the controller, not sure if it's genuinely possible though.

how did you get 181 to download with firmware finder?
I only see 2 OTA's for 181, not a full file..

With firmware finder proxy. Selected the ota, changed the proxy settings as the app dictates and used the phone's menu to search for an update. As soon as it started downloading, I removed the proxy settings.

Same here... and its annoying to have to keep trying it and fail - chewing up heaps of bandwidth... i guess im just impatient lol. My FF shows 3 different updates.. one that says "FullOTA-MF" which is 2.353gb and then two smaller ones (509mb and 615mb) which just say "OTA-MF".. its strange they have 2 differing smaller ones.. either way I have tried all 3 of these, and none work yet.

Called Huawei UK support and they said that all updates including the daydream support rols out in CHINA followed by USA, followed by Western Europe and then all others. There can be up to 7 days delay between regions. Ah well..

Ok, i tested LON-L29C636B181 with Daydream view and saw the same result as drdino, aka: everything looks good up to the point when it asks to insert the phone into the viewer. The background just stays black and does not start to show the video. Foreground is just the white separator bar, X and settings icon.
If i quickly switch off/on the phone, then i will see a quick blink of the VR video, so this seems to be some rendering problem.
Not sure what i could still do myself - except factory reset. But i do not dare because right now i do depend a lot on the phone (no good backup phone at the moment).
Given how i have an overseas model, i have not yet found a way to effectively complain to Huawei. I had contacted Huawei on the US once about the mate 9 pro (different issue), but they refused politely given how they do not sell it.
I did open a case with google though, not sure if that helps. Daydream app -> Settings (VR Settings) -> Help -> Contact Us -> Call
Google promised to send me an email about the case i opened with them, but i have not yet received any email. Maybe others here with the same problem on the Mate 9 Pro could also call up google, maybe someone will succeed bringing this problem to someones attention.

Same here, I chatted with Google for about an hour, and reached the same result, i.e. they will email me.
I think it's a display rendering issue, as I can see the momentary flicker as well.
An additional issue that I discovered is that the phone's nfc reader is on top, above the camera, whereas the headset's nfc tag is in the middle of the flap. For what it's worth, I copied an nfc tag and stuck it on the leftmost side of the flap but got the same result.
To replicate the flicker, you can try sticking the phone on top of the headset's nfc tag, it's reproducible maybe 4/10 times.

I am not even aware of any official USA or north-america versions of Mate 9 Pro or Mate 9 Porsche. All i can see are just overseas versions. This article https://www.androidheadlines.com/2017/03/huaweis-mate-9-pro-finally-supports-daydream.html also claims "Google also reiterates that the Mate 9 Pro and the Mate 9 Porsche Design are both available in the U.S., the UK, Germany, Australia, and Canada". WTF ?!

Interesting. I did not even knew that the VR viewer has an NFC chip . Yeah, playing around with it, the reader in the mate 9 pro can not read it when it is inside the viewer, but only when you match up the locations of the reader and the chip. Funny.

LOL think that article is misinformed.. we definitely do NOT have the Mate 9 Pro for sale here in Australia, and when people asked on the Official Twitter / Facebook pages, Huawei AU responded to say it would not be sold. The Porsche Design however, did make a minor appearance here in Australia - Huawei AU did a Auction to raise funds for a charity, in which case they auctioned off 1 (yes ONE) "Limited Edition" Porsche Design Mate 9. We only have the Mate 9 as officially sold here in AU. Believe the same in USA? (or possibly you get the PD there in USA too?)

On Firmware Finder's website I found LON-L29C721B180 where the changelog says that "This update adds Daydream and optimizes system performance and stability." Not sure if this version is authenticated yet, however.

LON-L29C721B180 is for PD.
Believe some users have mentioned on PD forums they have managed to install it, and some others failed to install (auth failed).. But as per posts above the Daydream maybe not work and gets black screen when they try to add the device into the VR headset - would think the PD would have the same issue...

It's very interesting to see people just get this issue after B181 OTA. I am using LON-AL00C00B175 and found this issue since updated. So it's like couple weeks ago when Google hasn't announced M9P is daydream ready. Also, my friend in Huawei dev team told me Chinese version of M9P wouldn't get daydream support soon. So let's wait and see.

It was B181 that brought daydream support to the International Mate 9 Pro.

Hello Everyone.. Last week got an update for P20 Pro Indian varient. New features as said by P20 Pro in this update were HI Touch Feature, Paytm Finger Print scan support, June Security patch.....!!!
The drawbacks after update were listed below.
1. Charging Time (0 - 50%) taking 54minutes while the phone is switched off. (This is weird)
2. Scrolling (apps menu, settings, Instagram) has huge lagging.
(P20 Pro Global Issues)
Below points were raised by many USERS and they are not reaching to Huawei for corrections. Let us make publish these points together until we succeeding reaching manufacturer.
3. Captured Screenshots were unable to view full after sending to our WhatsApp contacts, To be fixed
4. Still front facing camera beauty mode not yet fix, it's over saturated
5. Slow motion video @960fps not upto the mark
6. Still no EIS for video recording at 4K
7. All the themes and wallpapers in themes app were of EMUI 8.0 only and it should be upgraded to 8.1 for compatibility to EMUI 8.1 (because wallpapers were getting zoom in while inserting to home screen)
8. Still there is no double tap on screen for screen Off/On
9. Huawei Cloud ID is not compatible in India as we can't verify our mobile due to no "India" in the list of regions.. IDIOTIC
10. Security Updates were too slow compared to other high end devices from other companies or carriers
11. Required 3 finger scroll down for screenshot instead of knuckle tap
12. Default call recording option to be added as you just given in Honor View 10.
13. EMUI to be improvised as menu icons to be customized as stock. (because many of us are not liking the big icons and of round borders)

Do you really need to post exact same paragraph over few threads ?? It wont make huawei notice it faster. It only annoy other readers. You better ask a technews site to blow up the issue instead.

Im sorry but i think ur dreaming of a perfect phone. Not all issues or features can be addressed. Thats just unrealistic. We buy phones base on their brands due to their features. Each brand has its own feature. They are known cos of their features. Youre asking for a pecfect phone which doesnt exist. Better deal with the flaws and youll live happier.

Hello. We must make our phone perfect by resolving bugs by posting to manufacturer... So they may resolve... If you think like this "perfect" will be in our mind only.. But no, we have to make it possible and you are the one who don't support me... ???

Bad camera quality on EMUI 9.1

First things first. I love my Mate 9, and will probably use it till death do us part....
However, the quality of the front and back camera has decreased significantly with EMUI 9.1 update (EMUI 9 included). The autofocus in the video has become worse, stabilization isn't as it should be, and it loses focus continuously, and sometimes the video becomes blurry.
I have read on different forums that many phones had this issue with EMUI 9.1, but most have received fix (software version 295) which our phone has not (and will not) receive. So I am wondering is there a way to port and install old camera from EMUI 8 on EMUI 9? Or to port camera from different phone which has received a fix?
If not is it possible, via dload method (official way) to downgrade EMUI 9.1 to 8? My old P7 had this option (ages ago). My phone is on the latest available software 9.1.0.275 (C432E7R1P8).
I am most definitely sure that my phone does not have a camera hardware issue because I have replaced camera module, with no results (works the same).

TG, I don't have my Mate 9 anymore (and generally, no more Huawei phones to vare about)
First, be aware that Huawei removed the old firmwares and e.g. you can no more examine and download them by using FirmwareFinder.
You will have to find an alternative, trusted store with the old firmwares and with the appropriate info which of those firmwares are suitable for DLOAD (usually, not all firmwares were suitable for DLOAD, and that info was something easy to read from FirmwareFinder)
Second, Hawei changed the Bootloader sometime during the mid of 2018 - it was one (but not the last one) of EMUI 8 releases
It is a well known fact (search through XDA, not only for Mate 9) that downgrading from the new Bootloader (you do have with your EMUI 9) to any firmware with the old Bootloader causes an immediate hard brick, recoverable only by phisically opening the phone, short-cutting Test points and by flashing the board firmware (there was also a thread about the Test point method for Mate 9)
For more info, dive into the old threads and posts, it has been discussed two years ago (people were not aware about the new Bootloader and many Huawei users bricked their phones thinking that they could, as usual, downgrade their phones by DLOAD)
Hence, if you are going to downgrade to EMUI 8, you must downgrade to some of the latest versions that already had the same new Bootloader as you do have with your EMUI 9 (to avoid the brick)
Again, it was all easier when FirmwareFinder worked, because it was possible to distinguish (from date, Security patch, Changelog) which firmware came before or after the Bootloader change
Therefore, take a time and carefully study the old threads to find more info about the Bootloader change and hopefully the information what was the first c432 EMUI 8 build bXXX with the new Bootloader - you must not downgrade to any older firmware than to that one.
In other words, think twice before you attempt to downgrade to EMUI 8
On the other side, I'm pretty sure that stock camera apps are tied to the EMUI versions, i.e. that you could not 'extract' Huawei camera app from EMUI 8 and to 'install' it to EMUI 9
Of course these are just my thoughts and concerns. Please fill free to dive in and search through the old threads and posts.
As usual, you should be able to find all answers to your 'new' questions in those old posts

I did some digging around, you are very much correct about downgrading via dload method.
However, I've discovered that Hisuite has an option of downgrading, one version at a time.
Now the question is, has Huawei made it safe to downgrade via this method (I'm guessing that they allow downgrade up to a certain point)? Can't find out what are official Huawei forums to ask the question.

As long as you are downgrading to EMUI 9.1 you should be safe.
Unfortunately, not sure how would HiSuite react if you try to cross the BL border (I cannot recall but maybe it would not even show the downgrade possibility then)
But I saw some other people complaining that even by HiSuite they cannot upgrade (hence I don't know would it really work or fail reporting that firmwarwe is not available or something)

For the Phone Model, enter MHA-L29 (or Mha-l09, what was your model?), Region c432 and scroll down to EMUI 8.0 firmwares.
E.g., to b377, as on the screenshot
Take the URL of the File List (e.g., open and Share the address, Copy to Clipboard), here it will be:

Replace filelist.xml by changelog.xml:

(By putting the update.zip instead to the URL, you will download b379 update.zip, etc - you can see the filenames in filelist.xml)
and open, you will read the ChangeLog for b377.
It says:

Although about Graphics, this is actually exactly where Huawei switched to the new Bootloader - downgrading fom b379 to b377 would brick the phone (however, if I recall correctly, one could not force that downgrade by any regular way - it would simply fail, but only by HWOTA8 method, root required - and then the downgrade would brick the phone)
But wait for more info, I'm checking now from ny old friend, Huawei guru (unfortunately no more active on XDA), what about downgrading from 9.1 to 9.0.1 and then to any 8.0, even b379 - if that was dangerous as well

In the mean time let me explain my frustration.
Imagine WRC finally arriving in your country. You manage to get off of work. The first day of rallying you carry old Lumia 950 (still use it as a work phone, works great for email) with you because I forgot to charge my mate. The pictures and video comes out great. The next day (being a little drunk of course) you find a perfect corner with a tree and it's branch over the corner (about 6 m tall). I climbed it and waited for the cars up there like a monkey just to take the perfect video of certain driver going for it (hint i20 driver), and the bloody slow motion video turns out like ****. Normal video a bit better (because re focusing is less noticable). The pictures didn't turn out good also (skilled eye will notice), despite perfect conditions for taking video and photos..... And it's all because of stupid software.
It kind of suck that lumia 950 takes better video and photo than mate 9....

Nokia 8.3 5G downgrade from Android 12 to stock Android 10

Good morning, dear respective XDA community members!
Yesterday I have encountered with complete misfortune. I really hope on your expertise and expert knowledge in that issue. Appreciate your help and thank you very much in advance!
I have a Nokia 8.3 5G as my main working smartphone which I cherish as the apple of one's eye. I have headaches from PWM and can't use Samsung phones because of PWM and I need Android 10 as I have some work related apps which works only with Android 10.
So from the date of purchase my phone was complete brand new with Android 10 (Build number 00WW_1_110_RU) and (Android security patch level September 1, 2020) out of the box. I did not done any manual downloads and update of Android security patch level and neither Android updates to 11, 12. But last few months I started to receive irritating splashing system window with following text “Your system is out of date for 273 days, update & restart now”. While launching Opera browser the click on it's icon matched with the time of appearing that update window and phone pushed “restarting now” text with rotating circle. I fully understood that I was done here and started to press and hold power button to somehow block the execution of update but phone displayed standard boot up logo "Powered by Android" with green Android logo instead of standard white. I hold power button again and phone switched off. On the next attempt to boot it the "Powered by Android" logo remained with green Android. I understood that I now can't influence on it's update process. Now my phone with Android 12 (Build number 00WW_3_380_RU) and (Android security patch level: April 1, 2022).
I totally dislike Android 12, interface design not suits me, performance of the phone drastically decreased. And those specific software which I used for work only works on Android 10, developer of them would not make it to work with Android 12 due to platform limitations.
I never done any manual updates of Android, and Android security patch levels, strange that security patch updated by itself without my command.
There are no any information in the internet regarding of downgrading the Nokia 8.3 5G from Android 12 to Android 10. The only information I was able to find is how to downgrade Nokia 2.2 from Android 10 to Android 9, using boot slot change method, available here: https://www.techmesto.com/downgrade-nokia-2-2-from-android-10-to-android-9-pie/ I am not sure whether this tutorial applicable for Nokia 8.3 5G. I did not tried anything yet as now I am afraid to get a brick.
I consider actions of Nokia by rolling such splashing window with update without confirmation mechanism as criminal. Every person encountered with that must make Nokia liable and get case to court. Last time I encountered with such nasty situation was with iPad, I do not remember which generation it was as it happened while ago, but same situation with splashing update window happened when I tried to open Safari browser. And I was not able to get downgrade as Apple stopped signing iOS I needed.
Such actions are illegal as those Android updates are completely affects the performance. On Android 10 I had about 5.2 GB after boot and about 3.2 - 3.5 GB during work of free RAM. Now I have 4.2 GB of RAM after boot and only 2.2 GB during work. That's horrible as I lost of 1.3 GB of RAM, Android 12 decreased performance of my phone completely. Apple does same with their new iOS for older devices.
Even Samsung does not do such illegal actions, my father have old Samsung Galaxy S8 with stock Android 8 for years, he accidentally clicks every time on some system settings and asks me to revert them, but even there Samsung not uses any splash window with update, only Android update message I see from his phone is in notifications, but you have need to pass good amount of windows with confirmations in order to get Android update, so even unexperienced users are safe from accidental Android update.
It's a shame for Nokia. I would never buy anything from them again. Such technique with splash window is done by fake hacker apps and their swindler developers, every time you see some commercial such windows are appearing "Do you want to close advertisement?", but instead of closing it forces to redirect on downloading link of some virus APK or opening Google Play with malicious application.
Could you please say what I must do in order to safely downgrade my phone back to Android 10. I do not need the Root as I need to use NFC payment options of Google Wallet.
I can’t work now as applications I used for work only works with Android 10.

For Nokia 8.3, if you want to downgrade the phone back to Android 10, then you must unlock the bootloader as well after sideloading android 10 full OTA.
