Anywhere to get a refurb rootable Pixel3? - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

Got one from Amazon, said nothing about it being a Verizon phone, and I can't unlock the bootloader. Other vendors are saying they can't guarantee theirs won't be Verizon-locked either. I really don't mind a refurb for the savings, but I've got to have my hotspot! Any ideas on where to get one that's not Verizon?
Thanks a ton!

Wrote a review about a post like that on Amazon.
eBay seller
Wrote to these guys asking the same thing.
They told me they only sell Canadian stock and they can say that their phones are NOT Verizon since they don't have Verizon in Canada.
Canada Pixel 3 / XL are bootloader unlocked. (Basically anywhere that isn't the US)
I personally just bought from Google.
Enjoy.

Man, what a life saver!! Thank you so much! Going to give it a whirl. Definitely seems worth it to pay nearly half the price for a lightly used Pixel3! I really appreciate you taking the time to post this!!! Have a great rest of your day.

Try Swappa.com
its a good site to buy phones and such, thats where i got my pixel 3 (unlocked)
its easy to navigate the site, if you want the unlocked version they got it and etc!

Fi is doing a half off sale today. I was tempted to do it and sell my Verizon one, but I can't in good faith right now. Wife would castrate me, since we just had our first born and on only my income ?

Yeah, I just saw that!!! But I'd have to use it with Fi and not Verizon, right?

You have to activate it on Fi but you can cancel after a day and pay prorated fees.

No kidding - any idea how much we're talking on the prorated fees? It's a heck of a great price for a new P3...

Um so Swappa is AWESOME - too afraid to jack up grandfathered Verizon unlimited to I got one there, definitely not Verizon. I owe you guys!! Thanks a ton.

I'd stay away if you care about unlocking BL. Had a refirb p2 (straight from Google) that couldn't be u locked. OEM unlock was able to be checked off however once I entered the command it would fail. I dread if my pix3 ever needs to be serviced because that experience had a bad taste in my mouth. 2 returns and 2x no root same behavior

Verizon bootloader is LOCKED?!? *PROOF-OF-CONCEPT WORKAROUND FOUND*

Looks like unsigned files won't flash.
I guess we know why the Verizon version is so late.
I'm quite angry now.

Have fun guys. Verizon can't use LTE on the 700Mhz and have a locked bootloader.
I'm also contacting Sen. Schumer.
Yea I wasted my upgrade, gave them money, locked my contract, if i return the unopened item i pay a restock fee, if i cancel i pay a cancelation fee, i pay my bill and verizon wireless f*cks you and me. VZW you now suck, every other carrier on the planet, literally speaking has the phone unlocked, and you are the last to release it, kudos and sucking +2 more times,@$$h0l35.

If it's not unlocked in 14 days Verizon will be taking it back from me and I will not be paying a restocking fee because it is defective.

Lol. Defective on what grounds? You weren't able to hack the phone out of the box? Yeah goodluck with that.
Mine is staying in box until a root method is achieved, otherwise it's hitting craigslist and I'm grabbing a Nexus.
F*cking Verizon.
Gd (MOD EDITED) it AT&T! Wait, what?
(Sorry, so used to cussing out Ma Bell that I had to do it)

Wow, even AT&T's version is unlocked. What gives, Verizon? It's just pure greed. They obviously don't want to worry about the minuscule numbers that brick their phones for replacements.

This is definitely weighing in on my decision to keep my gnex. That and I came from sprint to Verizon about a week ago and -- damn this network is fast!!! I was gonna - maybe - return, the gnex and pick up an s3. This the first I've read about a locked bootloader.

This is really disappointing to hear...what the F verizon? And wtf Samsung, where's that backbone now ya jackholes...
Wow! Im on Sprint but I feel your pain. Hopefully a unlocking method is found asap. Truly a bi*ch move by Verizon

Guys.. I am so so soooo sorry. I switched to tmobile at the last second (Verizon customer for 8 or so years)
I knew Verizon would pull this bs.

Hah. Well this sucks for you Verizon people. If I was in your shoes I'd keep it just long enough for an "unlock the bootloader petition" to be ignored, for hacks to fail, and then return it on principle, and tell them why you returned it. as long as the bootloader's not also encrypted, there's a bit of hope.
Gnexus w/ jellybean > locked down sgs3 w/ touchpizz.
Apple is definitely paying Verizon off to do this.
haha im sure it's just Verizon being douches.
Can I cancel my preorder without paying an etf? It hasn't shipped yet. I'm beyond pissed at this bull****. I'm coming from a droid x and specifically wanted AN UNLOCKED ****ING BOOTLOADER.

If it hasn't shipped yet (and you haven't been billed), I'm assuming you can.
If you receive your phone, you have 30 days to activate it.
If you don't activate, no 14-day clock start.
Ouch.. I can't wait to tell my buddy who has Verizon. He is going to crap his pants.
I should have known.
I think I will be selling it and either getting a Galaxy Nexus CDMA, or keeping my Droid 2 Global until my contract is up, then switching to something like T-Mobile's prepaid plan and getting an unlocked Nexus device.
I cannot deal with this, unless Samsung's bootloaders are different from, say, Motorola's, and can be unlocked somehow.
Verizon, the network where you can't have nice things.
Wow that sucksss! I would be beyond pissed.

[Resolved] [Q] AT&T Unlock Policy

Hi
I'm in the US for my Masters degree, and wanted to get a L920 or 8X from AT&T, no contract. I'll be returning home(India) for Christmas, will they let me unlock it for international travel? I heard many L900 users were refused unlock codes.

A few years back I was on AT&T and had a Motorola RAZR V3xx and I got them to unlock it by telling them I am in the military and will be traveling overseas and needed the MSL so I could use overseas SIM cards. They insisted that I didn't need it but I insisted that guys in my unit were having problems with overseas SIMs and I didn't want the same issue...You could probably do this too

That's promising, thanks. Did they get you to relock it to their network when you returned?
I tried Googling this and all I got was iPhone unlock procedures, so I was kinda scared that the other phones would have to be kept for a longer time before unlock. Because in this case I'll need to unlock it in about a month after getting it.

Good luck talking me into "relocking" my phone to your network I never relocked it and ended up selling it a year later for a few extra bucks...unlocked phones sell for a little better used.
Oh and for the record I never actually went overseas...I wanted my phone unlocked so I went online and asked in modmymoto and someone who I probably should remember but don't, suggested that I tell them that story...So not my idea, but it did work

Anyone in canada willing to pick one up from me from sasktel?

Need to get my hands on the Moto X Play. Anyone able to get one from sasktel in canada? They seem to be the cheapest out there with the option to buy the device outright from a store.
Please let me know asap
Thanks guys and gals!
You might want to hold on there. From what I've read, all the Canadian devices are network locked...
Telus says theirs are carrier locked

from what I gather, your best bet for acquiring a USA GSM compatible and unlocked Moto X Play is to go with one from Brazil with model number XT1536. The question now is how to get one from that country and not pay too much extra fees for it. On a side note, I noticed all the Canadian carriers seem to carry the 16GB model only. i know memory is expandable but i'd prefer more onboard storage due to faster read/write access plus better memory chips used vs. your typical microsd card.
They're carrier locked but from what a Bell representative told me, you can pay them 50 (unlocking fee) and then you can unlock the phone yourself / other people to get it to work outside the carrier.

Hey thanks for the heads up man. i thought the brazilian one was also compatible but wanted to see if canada was easier. If it unlocked from brazil it may be a better buy.
Real problem is that conversion really sucks... $300 usd for the one from canada and $400 usd for the one from brazil

If you want- I can get you the one from Canada- I noticed you were in NYC which isn't too far from where I am- it is $449+tax CAD + $50 unlocking fee + whatever shipping would be to you.
Let me know! I had to go through so much trouble to get one even though I'm already in Canada already ahha- but no regrets at all! Awesome phone.

Does the Sasktel one come with the Turbo Charger? I saw an article on MobileSyrup that mentioned Koodo is one of two carriers that includes the turbo charger, but didn't see anything more.
Here in Alberta there's no sales tax, so getting it from Koodo may not be a bad idea (if they'll sell outright). I'm considering buying one, but only if I can get it outright.

As long as they have a net gain from purchase price/rebate/sale price,I suppose it's a worthwhile endeavor.........

T-Mobile is basically giving these things away. If they used the trade in thing, it makes the phone either free or less than $200. They probably have another phone they are using and don't plan on leaving T-Mobile, so they just got one and are selling it. T-Mobile, effectively, puts you in a contract doing this. They take the price of the phone and give you bill credits for the whole term of the EIP. If you terminate service, you owe the phone. Combine that with the free line promotion they had a few days prior, I am guessing this is what is happening. The contract does not say anything about using the phone. As long as they keep their bill current and keep their service, it will be able to be used (I think...). I would be careful buying one of these V20s in case you are not allowed to use the phone on a line that isn't associated with the account, but that is me being a worry wort.

Swappa won't let you sell a phone that still has anything owed on it. They check the IMEI.
I assume the bill credits wouldn't affect this as long as the phone is free and clear.

Full disclosure is a given when selling on Swappa, anything less would be fraudulent,if not to the letter of the rules,it certainly would be in spirit/practice.
This is some good information though, glad you brought it up. :good:
I'm betting a lot of folks have never heard of such a thing.
Yeah ur right. Lol I wast trying to buy a v10 and g5 earlier this year and ran into this situation. Very difficult to deal with. Most sellers selling them do t really understand them selves and they blame T-Mobile. It probly is T-Mobile fault since it's branded T-Mobile. Just want everyone to be aware they can't be unlocked, even a third party unlock service can't. Having it on ur account for 40 days doesnt matter either. It's a crappy situation lol

Again, many THX for bringing this up,you've no doubt saved some people a lot of trouble. :highfive:
FWIW,here's Swappa's policy on clean ESN's:
https://swappa.com/faq/sell/share_esn_numbers
Bulletproof,no,but,it sounds as if they're doing their due dilligence w/researching the ESN/IMEI,perhaps w/more tools than the general public is armed with.
Some sharp individuals here on XDA/Swappa running the show,I'm guessing/hoping they have this scenario covered, enough to ensure the buyers are protected in a worse-case scenario.
A little bit off topic, can you get square trade insurance for phones purchased at swappa?

Unlocked pixel 3 at bestbuy same as from google? For use on ATT.

Hey guys, now that the pixel 3 is $500, i think i'm ready.
I figure it should hold me over until 5g is ready in my area. I don't feel they need right now to drop $1300 on a 5g phone that won't get any 5g for a long time.
During internet searches i find conflicting info on whether or not an the unlocked pixel 3 at best buy is unbranded and unlocked or just unlocked.
I use ATT and prefer my phone not be branded to any carrier.
Which if i'm reading right is the way google sells them.
But some say the unlocked one at best buy is really a verizon version, just unlocked.
I'm going on vacation in a week, so just driving over and buying it would speed things up. I'd like to have a week to make sure all as good as for i'm not bringing 2 phones with me. Also time to get silicone case to protect it.
Any input is appreciated,
Thanks,
Joe
BTW, if this has been covered before and you know where to find the thread, just please link me.
I keep coming up with pixel and pixel 2 answers, not the 3.

Buy it from Google. Save yourself a lot of aggravation in the long run. If you can't get it in time then either have it shipped to where you'll be or wait until you get home.

I can live with the waiting if need be. (although it would be nice to take pics of the kids with something alot less beat than my s7)
But out of curiosity, any particular reason you feel this way?

Hey guys, now that the pixel 3 is $500, i think i'm ready.
I figure it should hold me over until 5g is ready in my area. I don't feel they need right now to drop $1300 on a 5g phone that won't get any 5g for a long time.
During internet searches i find conflicting info on whether or not an the unlocked pixel 3 at best buy is unbranded and unlocked or just unlocked.

The Verizon deal for $499.99 is only if activated on Sprint. They sell an "activate later" phone that should be unbranded since it is not available on an installment plan, but that is $599.99. The one with in-store AT&T activation may or may not be branded and is $549.99 Notice the "starting at" $499.99 disclaimer on the main phone page. Either way, if branding (or lack of) is important to you I would want to see it come out of the box in person. Also keep in mind that none of these are definitely the same as the Google version with unlockable bootlader. They might be, but only way to find out for sure is to try unlocking or to at least see the imei number to get an idea.

You are looking at the xl.
No big deal, but I just want the 3. (i was starting to wonder if i was crazy, since my page said $399 activated now and $499 no activation)
Regardless, if there is confusion or a chance i won't get an unmolested pixel 3, i'll order straight from google.
Any clue how fast google gets you a phone? I'd hope they have regional distributors.
Thanks,
Joe

Do not buy from Best Buy if you care about a "clean" unbranded phone. That's all there is to it. Get it from Google for $499 and wait for it and forget the pics if you can't get it in time. Unless you can have them send it to your vacay location depending on your travel plans. Don't bother looking at a device in BB before you buy it. They are each and every one branded with restrictions across the board. Not sure about local distributors most are sent from Illinois.

Thanks for all the advice, i ordered through google this morning.
Says delivery 14-15th so that's not too bad.
I'm also not feeling real guilty about $500. Phones have gotten so expensive, but the reality is that i only go on the internet, make phone calls and use apps that control other devices. Not really some kind of power user and i'd bet any phone feels good coming from a 3+ year old s7.
Just didn't want something $1000+
I bought from Best Buy, it's the same as the one sold from Google. It's unlocked with an unlockable bootloader and I use it on VZW. There's a lot of misinformation in this thread.

That's entirely possible but, unfortunately, BB sales people are basically clueless when it comes to those issues. What about the eSim is that available as well on the device you bought?
There have been too many horror stories coming out of the BB buying experience so unless you know exactly what you're looking for and can look at the device before purchase then it is best to avoid the possibility of failure. I'm also not sure about the RMA experience at BB. I know if you buy it from Google and something goes wrong they will advance ship you a replacement. Then you can transfer and send back your old phone with no downtime. Does BB offer that as well if you don't buy the $9/month warranty service? If BB says you have to replace it through Google then the device is not the same since you have to send back the old one before they ship you a replacement. If you're buying an unlocked phone I don't see any reason to buy it from any place other than Google.
The Google devices have an IMEI that begins with 99. If yours is that then you have a Google device. If not then it's not the same.

Man look esim✓ unlocked phone✓ unlockable bootloader✓ IMEI 990✓ SKU GA00457-US✓ it's the same phone. I don't post much anymore, but at one point in time I used to be a ROM developer. I know phones very well. Also just as to see the box, all the info you need is on it.

That's good information for us, thanks. I'd not seen that posted here before, at least not in the entirety like you just did.
