Anyone else as miserable with their LG G7 as I am? - LG G7 ThinQ Guides, News, & Discussion

I mean this thing is a piece of junk, keys all over the place, I typo all the time from mismatched touches on the screen, it bug reports daily, it is slower than older phones, no bootloader, no root, I HATE LG and this piece of S###! I have contacted Sprint, LG, anyone I can, and LG doesnt care, they are the absolute worst company ever in existence of mobile phones. I CANNOT WAIT until they go bankrupt. This is the WORST DEVICE EVER IN HISTORY! I am SO upset with LG and Sprint and SO disappointed with LG mobile in general. I havent met one customer who is 100% satisfied with LG YET to date! They will soon become the next Blackberry, a distant bad memory but they dont have to be if they would just listen to us and unlock the damn bootloaders. THEN we can fix the issues ourselves and accept LG, not love LG, but at least not hate them. I would have AOSP on my device day 1, instead, I am stuck with this overbloated Sprint BS (yes I have Octoplus LG and can move to US-Open / non-branded) but then I run into CDMA issues with Sprint so I am stuck with a terrible device I wish I could toss. And Sprint actually ASKED me if I would be interested in purchasing the lease out and owning it (to get a new phone on a new lease), YEAH RIGHT, I am DONE with this piece of crap phone and Sprint! They can both bite me, Sprint overcharges now with hidden fees and terrible customer support, and LG just doesnt care, they dont give a hoot about the customer, once they get the money, you are a distant past memory (like they will soon be)!

I have had this phone since late September, and have never had the issues that you have. Yes, it does have its quirks, but nothing like you've described. Have you tried a factory reset to see if that fixes the issues?

Since I got mine, I have debloated what I can on the phone via application menu and adb.. It's ok, but would prefer having a unlocked bootloader, and root.

I am 100% satisfied, so I must be your first

Can you flash custom partitions with octopus box?

No!
Just use this beast with some nice headphones.
Go to compare with s10 or iPhone xs max screen. Max brightness on all, G7 wins!
Best screen, best Dac, best Amp, best camera software. Best USB-C 3.1 with 5Gbps, hdmi output. What else do you want? Updates? What for? Since Qualcomm introduced Trust Zone it's almost impossible to get hacked or root the phone. Software updates are just a gimmick.
Enjoy your phone. It's WONDERFUL! Trust me on this.

I wouldn't say I'm miserable with the phone but the lack of timely security updates and lack of update to Android Pie makes it unlikely I would consider getting another LG phone. The solution is simple, sell just 1 global version of the phone so you don't have to provide updates for multiple models but they aren't listening to me.

Actually its only two versions.
The rest is carrier software that your carrier is responsible for.

Interesting. So you are saying that G710TM, G710VMX, G710ULM, G710PM, G710VM, G710EM and G710EMW are all the exact same phone with interachangable firmware? For the record, try calling Google Fi and telling them they are responsible for providing updates, LOL. They will tell you its LG's responsibility but either way my comments still stands. I wouldn't recommend anyone who wants a phone which receives regular updates to ever purchase an LG device.

I loved my quirky V10, but that decided that it would not turn on or chrage one day so I got the flagship at the time - the G7. I think the V30 was still a month or more to release. G7 is or was ok - optimize phone seemed to screw it up, clearing cache in recovery was just an error message, it was not particularly fast, but I could live with that. Then there was a few weeks of the fingerprint scanner being wonky. Well fingerprint stopped working yesterday. Hard reset didnt fix it. So yeah after 4+ years with LG never again will I get one.
Update: fingerprint started working again for some unknown reason. Software conflict maybe?

done 5 times (through settings and through recovery as well, I tried both methods), still piece of junk

I am glad everyone else is happy, but not me. All I can say it, wait until you DO have issues and try to reach out through LG. LG wont respond, they dont care, trust me, we are on our own. I will NEVER again EVER purchase another LG product, not a phone, washer, TV, monitor, nada. I am far from the only one complaining, its everywhere on the internet but I am surprised to find so many happy LG users here on XDA (but thats actually a good thing). I was expecting to find more users like me who cannot stand bloat, corporate BS, locked bootloaders, ETC. Maybe its just me, but I cannot stand by any company that does not allow bootloaders to be unlocked, no one has the right to tell us what we can and cannot do with phones WE OWN!

Yes but with the locked bootloaders, it is limited to "EMERGENCY FLASH" not the full bore flash. I can however cross-flash but I think that would only help if I had a .KDZ or .OCT that contains a rooted image for the EM model (or custom variant). I tried to load the EM model and unlock through the LG.DEV and it knew my IMEI was for a different model so it wouldnt give me the .bin file.
Octoplus LG:
G710AWMH - added world’s first Write Firmware (“*.kdz”, “*.oct”), Reset FRP*, Read/Write QCN, Read/Write NVM, Factory Reset
G710EM - added world’s first Write Firmware (“*.kdz”, “*.oct”), Reset FRP*, Read/Write QCN, Read/Write NVM, Factory Reset
G710EMW - added world’s first Write Firmware (“*.kdz”, “*.oct”), Reset FRP*, Read/Write QCN, Read/Write NVM, Factory Reset

Maybe emergency flash could be enough. I know how to get root through flashing abl_a and ftm (I think) partitions from an EM module and using the unlock bin from the em model. Can you check if you can flash abl_a and ftm?

I actually deleted the .bin file a while back when it didnt work, if you have a new copy, I will try it. I am willing to try anything at this point to get off the stock OS, it is such junk! I am glad other users are happy, but I am surely not! I went from my own AOSP on my PME (HTC 10) to this over-bloated piece of junk that barely functions.

Not right this second but yes, just tell me what you need and I'll get it and reply. My box is home and I'm at the office in the city so it won't be until tonight or tomorrow morning but I will get it.

Just the box. The idea is to record how the box communicates with the phone and get a firehose file out of it. No need to flash anything. Just USB sniffing the recognition
Edit: tell me whenever you're ready and I will guide you if you don't know how

[Q] T-Mobile LG Optimus F3 Forum?

Okay, so I know this phone doesn't exactly win the spec war, but it's awesome and would make a fantastic rooted phone. Unfortunately there isn't a forum here on XDA for the device (either because it's too new or there isn't a demand for it)
Do you guys think a forum will be made for this device? It'd be nice to at least have a place to say what root methods DON'T work (I've tried a few)
Thanks for the help, XDA rules!
I second this. I am planning on buying a new phone and after researching numerous phones out there based on my tastes and constraints, I think this phone works very well (another is Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 2). One flaw that I heard is the amount of storage in this phone is around 4gb. Without a way to put apps on an external SD card (which I believe would require a custom ROM), the storage would probably fill up pretty quickly. So it'll be great if XDA opened a forum for this phone.
As a side note if anyone can point to other devices that fit my needs I would be grateful:
- Less than 4.2" screen (preferably 4").
- Android only
I don't have any financial constraints or any favorite companies.
Thanks!
What root method did you find worked? Did you try framaroot? Also have you found any Roms?

Bad news
I have created the recovery tree, and have created a recovery.img for this phone. ok now heres the bad news OUR lg optimus f3 has a stock 3.4 kernel with a locked bootloader. Even worse news is that 3.4 "locking" features a sha5 hash system for its image/partitions (recovery, boot, and bootloader). Even worse news there is no known (or atleast what i know or have heard) way to get around this. The phone will be forever locked until lg updates or allows said lock to be removed. I have flashed the recovery and have had no damage to my device but it just sticks at "unsecure recovery" and does a hard reset (factory restore) every time i try to play with it which is a huge flaw if you ask me.
I have hexedited the bootloader and found that there is indeed "juicy" strings within that may tell to a future unlock these strings being
-Device UnLock!, so Boot Success!!
-oem unlock
-ERROR: Could not do normal boot. Reverting to fastboot mode
Also these strings could just be defualt with all lg bootloaders meaning....there is no hope.
My phone is without a soul and I will never be buy lg again.
If anyone is able to get into fastboot
1. PM ME
2. run : fastboot oem unlock
Again root for this phone works great as long as you dont touch recovery, bootloader, or boot partitions

I've seen confirmations on three carriers (can't remember which ones off the top of my head, sorry [edit-well, T-Mobile and Virgin Mobile come to mind now]), so I'd assume the answer is yes. Regardless, I have yet to see anyone complain about adverse affects, so no reason not to try (though, grain of salt—I'm brand new to android).
For anyone that has this, how are the antennas on this phone?
I just ordered one from tmo and am hoping to get better reception at my house than from my Samsung or HTC.

BAHAHA me to man i think im down to 10 days. Im trying to get some attention but i need someone who knows little endian, and their way around bootloaders. Id be willing to donate to someone who can help me out, also to support the other 3 variants (if the aboot differs).
I have a recovery created also and a device tree (needs gpio support for kernel).
And to awnser your question, yes loki will work IF i can get the needed values so that when recovery/boot is read into memory that it overwrites the security check feature in aboot. If the wrong values are give you may end up with a brick (very slim chance)
My return window just closed . If it helps, you can pull the open source from LG's website and merge it with the android source. I also discovered an even easier solution: set up the LG Sync application, and select the "upgrade recovery option". Then, when it begins downloading, remove your phone, set Windows (or your relevant OS) to show hidden files and folders, and go the the Program Data folder. There should be something like "PHONEAX" under the LG Electronics folder that will contain the full stock kdz file when the download is complete.
It's really kind of surprising that there's absolutely no dev love out there for the F3. I suppose it's because the phone is entry level, but it's really not that bad but for the storage. I got it as a gift, so no complaints here—of course, if anyone wants to donate a Note or Galaxy gratis, I suppose I'd be willing to switch .
I had a Galaxy S4 from Verizon. I switched to T-Mobile Because believe it or not the network is stronger where I work. Also, there pricing on plans cannot be beat. But, I digress. The Galaxy S4 being a Verizon device never really functioned the way it was supposed to on T-Mobiles network. It was unlocked however was still useless for 4G LTE and while I could do better than edge in some places, those places were few and far between. I started to assess what it is I actually used my phone for these days. I'm not into modding with custom ROMS and kernels anymore and I'm not much of a multi-tasker either so I decided that I did not need the super power device anymore. The specs on this phone are perfect for what I need my phone to do. Its been a long time since I have gone beyond rooting to remove bloat and tether. I agree that the storage on this sucks. I don't understand why there are any devices anymore that come with less than 32gb internal. storage is the cheapest thing that can be added to a device and its not as though it uses much physical space. other than the storage I will say that I am impressed with the quality of this device and I don't know that I would even put this as low as "entry level device." I would say its more of a mid-grade device. I am also happy with the reception on this device and its nice to have a compact phone again that actually fits comfortably in my hand and on my belt.

No argument here. I like it well enough, but I'm (1) a closet geek; and (2) a heavy multitasker, so given the option I'd prefer something with more screen space (I just graduated from law school, so I do a lot of reading on the go). As a phone, however, you really couldn't ask for more—the size otherwise pretty much perfect, it's relatively snappy with most applications, and once debloated the stock launcher is pretty good.
That being said, the second I see a safe way to deal with the bootloader pop up, I'm diving in, no question .
Decided to share my home screens.

Noob root now slightly bricked G Flex 2

Hi all. My new phone was going greatish. It was a little laggy, so thought I would root it and remove some of the preinstalled junk. All went fine no problem.
I removed some of the vodafone (UK) stuff, and all was well. Some time later though, I get a message:
"Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped"
And now my phone won't find the network and message pops up every couple of seconds. I tried a factory reset, but I suspect this made it worse as I have now lost my backups from Titanium app. The phone is basically unusable as it is due to constant error message and no network.
I have tried to access the recovery menu, but i get an empty robot with "no command".
I have seen some mention of CIDs on other forums but haven't got a clue how to go about fixing it or even where to start.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as obviously the phone is absolutely brand new, and I'm very very upset about the whole thing! Not to mention the fact that I feel like an idiot!
Anyway, thanks in advance.
You deleted something that was not suppose to be deleted. Don't the stock tot file on this forum and follow the steps to Flash back to factory
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g-flex2/general/guide-lg-g-flex-2-stock-firmware-to-t3037593 follow the video and you should be up in running in no time . make sure this link support your version not sure which g flex2 Version you have.
Still no tot files available for the LG G Flex 2 (any variant). Sorry got to wait for some to become available.
Thanks for the input. I figured it would be something like that. Any idea when the files might be available? I don't mind being a guinea pig at this stage. My phone is LG H955 on Vodafone UK.
I am going to try and play dumb in Vodafone shop today and see if they'll replace it there and then (doubtful).
I suppose my other alternative is to return it to LG for Firmware Flash. Anyone know if this is possible and potential cost?
Strangely, I'm not so bothered about (temporarily) destroying my brand new phone too much, it's my sudden lack of connectivity that hurts the most.
Thanks guys
Further update; I have spoken to LG tech support / repair department, and I told them the phone had been rooted etc. (I didn't leave any identifying details!) They informed me that as the phone was now out of warranty, I should speak to their service partner SBE.
After calling SBE, they informed me that LG or their partner have no obligation to fix rooted phones, so apparently they just won't do it, even though I'm certain they could, which kind of sucks, as I was obviously willing to pay.
So it looks like I'm waiting for the TOT files. I hope they come along soon!
Lesson well and truly learned!

Stay positive. Hopefully those tot files come soon. I on the other hand what to experiment with my phone but need a tot file just in case I mess anything up.
If it's just your dialer that's acting up, have you tried a third party dialer to make phone calls?

Lets see if we can work on this.
Is it working ok, just not picking up the network?
How long exactly have you had it?
If you put what you all deleted meaning what folders they were in i could make a copy of that folder or apps you deleted and upload them on dropbox for you that might help get you going worth a shot
Be better if someone had the same variant as you i have the Sprint model.
Thanks again for input. I have hopefully managed to sort this with my provider. I was just within the 14 day cancellation period, so I have arranged for a brand new handset. I know its a little bit naughty but if the phone wasnt so laggy to begin with, I would never have rooted it.
I'm guessing it makes no difference to them as the phone will go back to lg for wipe and reflash as a matter of course once returned.
Thanks folks, I will remain on this forum and hopefully not do anything quite so stupid again!
Unfortunately this is my last day with this device . Great phone but i was wrong the 810 processor is dangerously hot to the point it felt like my pockets were on fire. This my second g flex2 and I'm moving on to something more reliable. Love this phone but this heat issue i can't risk. After 14 days i would be stuck with this phone and i can't take the risk of hoping of getting a device that function fine bye everyone.

Today, I've gotten myself in a similar pickle after applying noob root.. Data OK but no phonecalls and no txts. When I tried to make a call, the thing said the phone is not activated. Sprint tech supp was of course no help, so after some digging I found this: ##72786#
Factory reset, keep the data (and all apps).
That solved it.
I guess I'm old enough to know that being lazy doesn't pay.

so you had root, and while doing this factory reset you were able to go back to full stock unrooted rom? if so, were you able to install updates? i too have a sprint version and i was rooted and tried installing an update but failed, i then unrooted my phone tried the update again and still got an error. im just wondering if this method would actually help people who have the same problem as i do.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
I tried every possible way to install this damn update. Rooted, unrooted, factory reset 4 times, tried to install from the system update in settings, from recovery (which is, at least for me, very tricky to get into) all efforts errored out.
I posted a link to the update.zip in other thread.
So then I gave up and used this noob root which killed voice calls and text.
This code I posted says it does a factory reset but is resetting something else than other factory resets because almost all my settings, passwords and all apps remained intact.. Then I used the original root method and everything works like it's supposed to.
I guess we'll have to wait until someone finally starts developing for our phone.
So after a few days I just received a notification for the update for the third time. Any suggestions as to how I should proceed? I've tried it while being rooted and failed, also tried it the second time after unrooting and failed too. Also, what is the default location where the update is downloaded to, so I can back it up.
So far nothing has worked. The update should be in the cache folder. There is also a link to download the update that someone posted in another thread here about the update.
FYI - I forced the update through recovery over root and bricked my phone. Like all the way bricked. I can get to recovery and download mode, but no fastboot even. Luckily I was within my 14 days and there is no way to tell it is rooted... because it doesn't even get that far, so I got a replacement. My sincere advice would be to wait to root until we have custom recovery and stock firmware available, and if you have root now, wait to update until a dev can release a "root safe" version.
I'm not an expert but I'm not new either. I got the original Evo on launch day and have done all kinds of dumb stuff to every phone since. This is the first time I haven't been able to recover it.

=( *hug. That sucks man, thankfully you were able to get it replaced. *pfew I dodged a bullet there. I was actually thinking about doing the same thing getting home from work. Yeah its best we don't mess with the phone any longer those that have root at the moment. Until custom recovery and stock rom is out like he says.
Wow. How did you manage to "force" the update through recovery? I tried it through recovery but it would error out. (Error 7)
I will tell you, as a cautionary tale.
The error when you flash from recovery references a specific file that is incompatible with the update. I used root explorer to investigate further and found that the root script had overwritten a system file. The original was saved as "original" so I deleted the file causing the error and renamed the original one. After that, the update went through and I thought I was golden... Only now nothing else works.

MSM Download Tool?

I'm about to go for it and buy a 7 Pro, do we have an MSM Download Tool available yet here on XDA for the 7 Pro? I'm coming from the 6T and that tool is a MUST. Thanks guys!
No not yet. We have the files but its password protected.

Ah thanks! That's how it all started with the 6T, password protected file. It's a matter of time though! Cool! :good:
You'll be waiting for two weeks or more. I set oem lock to "off" in settings, and then did "fastboot oem lock" like an idiot and I literally can't get into my phone at all now. All fastboot commands fail and I can't reboot into recovery either because it just says "your device is corrupt" every single time. I contacted oneplus support multiple times and they told me "we don't have anything available yet to help you, so you can just return it to us." Huge waste of time speaking to all those useless reps and I'm definitely not going to buy another oneplus product again. It's actually ridiculous that they don't just provide those tools upon release, especially when this issue has PERSISTED across all of their devices. I still have the phone for now, so if anyone finds a useful Oneplus rep who actually has the tools, or if someone figures out how to fix this issue, please let me know.

1. If you do your research before just throwing fastboot commands you would have read that others on here have done the same, so do your homework.
2. If it's ridiculous that they don't just provide those tools upon release, especially when the issue has PERSISTED across all of their devices, then why run fastboot oem lock?
Everyone is always so quick to blame OEMs but not their own poor decision making. Take responsibility for your own actions even if you run them in cmd prompt.

Thank you for your reply. This is my first time owning a OnePlus device, so I hadn't looked at anything at on any of the community forums about it except how to root it and install magisk.
My last device was a razer phone 2, which had similar steps towards rooting it, and I actually did use "fastboot flashing lock_critical" to re-lock the bootloader after unlocking it, so I assumed that it would be the same for the oneplus, which in hindsight, obviously I was wrong.
But even if that was a minor screw up, I can't access the device at all, and that's what's bugging me. I do frequent backups, so having an option to erase all my data wouldn't be an issue if that was given, but not having that option at all and then bring told by OnePlus that the only option is to return it is absurd. I appreciate your feedback towards what I said, and if you are a OnePlus employee then I'm still standing by what I said and calling all of the 'support' I received useless, as it was just a waste of time and didn't lead to any sort of fix

LOL if I was a OP employee I would be helping out with the MSM tool! I cannot tell you the last device I rooted and installed ROMs on as its probably been close to 5 years and I see many things have changed. This is my first OP device since the original OP. I'll have my bin tonight but I am 99% sure I am going to wait for the MSM tool to come out whenever and do the international conversion that way. I hope you get everything sorted out!

Bashing OP support reps here is uncalled for. A rep can't help you because the method of trying to do what you want wasn't built into the software. Not the reps fault they can''t fix that they didn't build the software. Also OEM unlocking, rooting, flashing ROMs isn't covered by any type of warranty or support. So you better be thankful they are letting you send it in. If you choose to root, mod, or install software it's at your own risk.

As far as I know, what we have is for the GM21AA for 9.5.3.
I think I saw one for the T-Mobile variant here as well, just haven't paid much attention there because I have AA model personally.
Not too sure about GM21BA either, someone add info for that here if you want.

When will Google start posting the factory images?

Does anyone know when Google will start to actually post the images? This is the first phone I can remember having in my hand without any factory images posted.
I was wondering the same thing. Since no factory images are up, I tried the Android Flash Tool, which correctly identified the phone as a 4a, but said it was "unsupported". I've never tried the Flash Tool before, fairly easy to use, but I do wonder how fast the downloads will be. But, yeah, factory images should be up. I never completely trust a phone out of the box, prefer to do a wipe and flash before setup and use. I mean, it was probably built in China, right? I don't need any Chinese spies looking at my porn.
Well, today (Aug 20) was supposed to be the official debut, even though many of us have had these phones at least a couple of days now. If they dont have the images posted by tomorrow, then someone at Google is asleep at the wheel!
Maybe Android 11 is coming so soon they'll wait to post that?

I think I read somewhere that, as Google is moving away from China, they've been producing more in Viet Nam. The Pixel 4a is supposed to be the first phone to be fully produced outside of China. That's cool, right?
i started tweeting at @madebygoogle & @googledevs asking them to upload factory images & kernel source lol maybe itll get someones attention but not counting on it
I emailed google support to ask if unlocking the bootloader and rooting the pixel 4a with magisk would void the warranty. The response was that it would not void the warranty. That convinced me to buy a second Pixel 4A to replace my other moto x4 as well.
I need to root only becaasue I need telephone call recording with bluetooth. I have paid versions of both Call Recorder (skvalex) and BoldBeast, but neither work with bluetooth if the phone is not rooted, so it is good to know I can root as soon as an image is available. Here is the response I got:
" I understand you'd like to know if unlocking the bootloader and rooting the device would void the warranty. Let me help you with the details. Warranty of your device is still covered regardless of whether a device was rooted or unlocked. However, if you are experiencing any issue after rooting the device, we might suggest you to unroot the same in order to get the issue resolved. Android is not against rooting, but we can't guarantee functionality if the source code for the Android OS has been modified hence we might ask you to unroot the device before helping you with the warranty options."

Box says phone made in Vietnam, accessories made in China. My problem with China is with human rights more than a concern about spying. My original post was meant to be funny. That having been said, Vietnam's human rights record isn't so great, either.

I'm kinda thinking this as well. I've got the final/release candidate Android 11 beta on my Pixel 2XL right now. It's pretty good, but there are a few problems I've noticed that should be cleaned up before it goes final. It wouldn't surprise me if they release another beta/Release Candidate #2. Google probably was shooting for a simultaneous launch, but couldn't get 11 finalized in time. I also assume there's a beta version of 11 for the 4a, because there has to be if it's about to be upgraded to 11, right? At least post those images up.

China has been throwing its economic weight around to effectively undercut any and all competition. It's just a reality if you want to have a manufacturing-based economy in 2020 that you'll have to make an incentive to drive business your direction. Unfortunately, many companies were in a catch-22 where if they report the rampant IP-theft in connection with the CCP they would either lose their competitive margin or potentially lose the ability to manufacture their product at all, because China also has hoarded the best tooling tech.
If there's one thing that the US' current administration has done correctly, it's to bare China's fangs. Hopefully, with commerce forcefully directed elsewhere, the dire need for profit margin will ease a bit in the poorer countries of the region, giving way for better human rights adherence. At least, that's my wishful thinking.

Save that e-mail! While that rep said it won't, that doesn't mean it is true as a company policy. But the fact that you have it in writing from a Google rep gives you some ammunition in case they do try and say your warranty is void.

Does make for a September update a big question. Could G just start it on 11? Device rollout was delayed. Maybe a thought. I am hoping for a 10 release of at least our current as released build QD4A.200805.003. Especially if 11 bootloader has issues with . . . .
A nice comparison to my 3a, 3 is side by side the case of a 3 in size and a display more than 3a. Surprised hole punch (which would not think) goes away in most use...
reached out to google support team after making a fuss & finally got a pretty good answer...
In regards to Factory image availability on our developer page, the image would be updated post security patch of Sept. As it's a new device we are shipping the devices with August update, once the device specific builds are released it will reflect on Developer images.

This is the build that it was released with. I was surprised, because I had read so many articles saying the phones had been assembled months ago and were in a warehouse waiting for release. I doubt they re-flashed all the phones, so I suspect they were manufactured more recently. I had expected a very old security release to be on them, but it's the August release.
Build # convention for .003 was carrier specific builds on rest of Pixel line...is a wonder.
Since I have a audience I get no Sprint dial code switching on Google Fi Network.
So TMobile here now...no chat messenger!
US Cellular is my other provider same thing. Call screen is working.
Radio sensitivity is better than 3a nice to have in the boonies here.
Yeah I kinda figured they would wait til the Sept patch is out to provide the factory images. Sucks a little that is over two weeks from now.

I'm usually a happy silent observer because the factory images are usually out when the phone comes out, but I am a little annoyed because I have my new phone and I don't want to set it up again in two weeks.
Is there any reliable way to dump the ROM and get the boot image without root?

Yes, I do, too. But I roughed it out setting up the phone without it. Most of my apps had data in the cloud or their own backup file. I transferred other files manually. I'll root, but I don't need to setup my phone twice because I unlocked the bootloader first.

Question What am I missing

Bought phone off marketplace; verified it was working by inserting my SIM card and making a phone call prior to purchase. Later on while setting up the phone I discover that it's got administrative software installed on it and retail mode turned on.
Looking closer at the box, it said it's a demo unit. (I know, should've been more thorough)
The question I have is if it's a true demo unit that's unsalvageable, why was I able to make the call? (I used my own SIM)
Some demo units can make calls. People like to try them out in stores. Personally, I'd try to return it. Maybe you can flash a new firmware. Doubt makeup of hardware any different since it works. Never know though.

Unfortunately returning isn't an option, the guy knew this thing had an issue and decided to not tell me. I figured since it made a call, it should be fine.
The IMEI number comes back as clean, I might try and see if I can use it for a "trade In" if flashing new firmware doesn't seem like it can happen.

there's a admin lockdown, software called SENNCO from Brichtec, its what's removed the "wipe data/factory reset" from the recovery menu im guessing.

Why not? You said if non of this works you're going to trade it in... As long as you don't brick it... And if you're on TMobile... Is it eligible for care plus? If so, you may be able to pass it off to them for repair
Great minds...i was doing that while you posted i guess. Was able to flash and reboot and it went back to the same locked down version that was there before. I guess this means that it's the bootloader/recovery that's locked down? Will try replacing that next.
Any idea where I might find the TWRP for this phone?

Not really sure, haven't rooted or used recovery software in a long time. Finally decided to let others be beta testers and just want a working phone. Go to Samsung Care plus web site, plug in your serial number or IMEI and it will tell you if it qualifies for coverage. If so, $8 month, first 3 or 4 months free, cancel at anytime. If covered, pay deductible and let them fix or replace, which in this case would most likely be replace. Past that, USA phones are pretty locked down if they weren't purchased unlocked. Yea, you can unlock a provider phone after a while on their plan, but boot loader still tough to Crack. I think that's what you just ran into.
