I removed all of the security parameters to make a backup so that, theoretically, I wouldn't run into the pin number obstacle, as my device is encrypted. Upon returning to security settings to setup my fingerprint I keep getting the message: Fingerprint Setup Cancelled Please Try Again. I've tried everything short of factory reset, or reflashing my custom ROM. At the moment, I'm restoring my Nandroid backup which I'm sure wont work, since it will take me to square one. I've found no threads on XDA concerning this, just some unintelligent threads on Verizon and T-Mobile where nobody knows anything. If anybody has found a solution to this, please help.
Edit: Just for the record, removing security parameters did not bypass the necessity to enter the decryption pin. Also, Nandroid made phone very slow and unstable. Looks as though I'm going to have to perform a clean wipe. My original question is still relevant though, as I'm not the first that this has happened to. The device became so unstable, I performed a factory reset.

Just in case this post gets moved, I want to identify my device as the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 (i535).
To give a little background on my issue, I have an issue with the device. When I first got it back in July, first thing I did was root the device. Naturally, since it was a new device, I was working with experimental methods... a couple weeks ago I thought to download CyanogenMod 10.1 (nightly build) to flash it with 4.2 and rid myself of the persistent OTA update that as we all know could not effectively install because of the measures I took to root. So, I boot into recovery and flash my custom rom. BAM! As it turns out, I did not have an unlocked bootloader and my phone was now teetering on the verge of being a $600 paperweight. I got that dumb yellow triangle saying unofficial firmware detected or some nonsense like that... Anyway, I look around the internet and decided that I was going to revert back to a stock rom using Odin, and then proceed to unlock my bootloader and root the device (I followed method 3 here) I used some touch recovery console that I have never heard of before (backups incompatible with ClockworkMod recovery) and something must have failed because my back up would not flash. I took the hit on losing most everything and reflashed successfully the custom rom mentioned earlier.
After about a week, I noticed the device began to drop data. 4G would just stop at random parts of the day, and I would have to disable and enable the data to get it to reconnect. At this point I was still able to make and receive phone calls and texts. After about 3 days of this, I concluded it was more than likely a bug in the custom rom, and that I could not live with it... so I redid the a fore mentioned tutorial and left the phone as a stock/unlocked/rooted device. The data issue continued, but with a twist. I was now unable to make or receive phone calls or texts. No matter what I did, I could not do anything and the 4G would only stay connected for a matter 5 minutes or so. When I logged into my vzw account, it identified my device as an unknown non-verizon device. Customer service walked me through various soft/hard reset techniques and nothing worked. They also suggested I try a new SIM card, which failed to work.
So, I turn to the bright minds of the android community. I have already decided not to invoke the Verizon warranty offered, where the result is they take my malfunctioning phone in flawless cosmetic condition and replace it with a "like-new" phone in working condition, because I think it's garbage that a warranty would give out used crap (should fix or replace). I have not contacted Samsung customer support yet because I wanted to see what my options were. I've already attempted flashing different radios and nothing seem to make any difference. If I have to, I will revert it back to stock again and invoke Samsung's warranty program, but I would much rather keep the phone. As it sits, I am stuck with my Motorola Droid Razr Maxx, and that just doesn't cut it.
So I ask, is there anything that can be done? Anyone know of a fix for my situation? I saw something about this in my quest for an answer and I don't know if my situation is a fit for this fix. If anyone has any knowledge of my issue and a work around for it, it would be greatly appreciated. I am at my whits end.
It sounds like you've done your homework on your problem.. The only thing in your post I didn't see was your sim card.. Maybe pulling it wait 2min restart. Shut down and insert,, or maybe a reprovision of the sim may be in order..

If your IMEI is intact, I would say to flash to ICS and reprovision the phone as suggested above. If it is not, you need to restore it with that backup that you made some time ago.
If it were me, I would reprovision, that is easy to do and I honestly think that it will work for you. If that works for you, reroot and restore your backup for TW ROM and you will be fine.

Well that's just it... I don't know anything about the IMEI and how to determine if that is the issue. If by reprovision you mean reflash back to stock, that is it's current state, and that did not resolve the issue.
As for the other comment in regards to the SIM card... I have already attempted that method, and it did not work. Also, a new SIM card was also tried, and had no success.

Google reprovision, it is a number combination that you enter on the keypad that resets your phone. I had a similar problem that you are having and that fixed our for me. You also need to know that when you do this, it will erase all of your information on the phone. It will be just like it was when you unpacked it and powered it on the first time.
You will have to be on ICS because they removed the option to do this with JB. Just search for the code to enter and you will be fine.

Ok. So I tried the reprovsioning mentioned above. When my phone rebooted I was on data and able to make phone calls. Score! However, I checked the IMEI and it said 0. So, thinking that it was just a matter of time before my device began to stop working again... I did the IMEI fix. Now my phone is placing calls and holding data without issue. The OTA updates are flooding in and installing without issues.
I would like to point out, while I feel better having done the combination of both reprovisioning and IMEI fix, ultimately the initial reprovisioning did appear to resolve the issue.

Ok. So I thought I would give encrypting my phone a test drive, as I have never done it before, and read a lot about the pros and cons, and decided to see for myself since having the code, I could always factory reset, worse case scenario, right? WRONG! The problem is that even performing a factory data reset, it refuses to mount data, resulting in no change whatever. So I'll just TWRP wipe, and restore nandroid right? WRONG! Nothing I do will allow the data to be mounted, so I always end up back where I started. I read that flashing a custom kernel is a workaround, but I am on stock rooted, with stock SE Linux enforcing, so I don't think I can flash a kernel. I'm afraid to use the upgrade tool, as I am afraid that it will either fail or brick my device. If I am wrong, or have missed anything in my searches, please correct me and help if you have knowledge in this area. Apparently, one thing Touchwiz got right is a decrypt option in their settings. AS it is, I am unable to backup, restore, or flash another ROM, because data will not mount to be wiped. UGH! Worst mistake I have made. Ever. Thanks in advance for any help with this. I have no problem in losing everything, as I have important stuff backed up physically and in the cloud.
Finally got formatting data to work, and restored backup from external SD, which I removed before format, just in case. Sorry for posting for help a little too quickly, but maybe my exploits will save someone else from headache I went through. :victory:
Hello, I hope it's the right part of XDA to post my thread as I have serious issues here.
Got my HTC 10 (with Android 6)back from repair today and restored my backup.
But dumb me it seems as if i set a password/patern whatever and i can't remember it.
So after a restart i can't unlock my phone cause it's asking for the code (and won't let unlock only with fingerprint) and i can't remember.
All combination that i would have used are wrong and now i got a working phone back again (after almost 2 month of repairing) and can't unlock it.
Is there any way of bypassing/ignoring the restart password or is it possible to only unlock it again with the fingerprint that is stored?
As i don't know what i should do if i don't get my phone unlocked
I tried to factory reset it andxthat worked but all my apps and data is gone as google seems to only restore some apps and almost no data of the apps.
So i set it up as a new device and only restored /data but immediately after reboot I was asked to put in the forgotten password.
So is there anyway of bypassing the pin/pattern after restart and only unlock the device with the fingerprint that is stored. And if not, is there any way of being able to use my /data after a factory reset again?

So I had rooted this 'Galaxy Avant' phone originally so I could disable/remove the extra stuff of the systems' in the hopes of improving the phones' performance, but I didn't change the OS from whag metropcs gave me at that time. I also had a password and/or a pin lock on both the sd card, startup, and internal memory. Everything was okay until I ran into a wifi issue where it wasn't connecting to a semi-public wifi hotspot, so I thought if I cleared the wifi apps' cache the issue would go away. Trouble was I didn't know that the wifi cache wasfor some reasin the same as the system's cache, and a few seconds after clearing it, my phone crashed, and continued to restart itself. So I panicked and tried removing the password/pin locks for easier backup to recovery/resetting. Well the external sdcard managed to decrypt, but when I proceeded to attempt the same for the device, it decided to factory reset itself.
I lost nearly everything from that event. I did periodic backups to the sd card but not daily and since that phone was also responsible for my own memory retention, at least a month or two of my soul is still missing. Any new contact, commitment, itinerary, life decision, goal, deadline, or other important note from that time was wiped and can't be found anywhere else, and I still don't know who else is or was affected from this (especially if I had just made their acquaitance).
So all that to say I must get this device back to how it was before the cache-wiping incident. The phone hasn't been turned on since, except to dump the system image onto my linux desktop. With testdisk I can see what I assume are the deleted partitions from before the factory reset, but I don't know how to undelete+decrypt them and/or copy them back to the device. Please tell me honestly that there's a way to do this, and what that way is. My functioning really depends on it...

Go to Sammobile .com or samsung-updates .com, enter your model number in their search feature to find your stock firmware. If you can find the firmware, you can use Odin to flash the firmware to restore the device to normal function.

Thanks, but the device already functions normally; it reset itself to factory defaults, after all.
I just want to be able to restore the device to as it was before the accidental cache wipe—apps as they were, files, and all...

Oh, you mean you want to recover your lost data. All I can say is try some data recovery software on PC, there isn't any guarantee that it will work though. Data recovery on android is not very reliable.

I unlocked the bootloader and was hoping I might be able to backup the user data (by partitions) with TWRP to attempt file recovery but it is encrypted. I never set a Pin/Pass/Pattern lock on the OP8 before doing the oem unlock.
Does oneplus have a default encryption password?
I know what you mean. I've run into that issue before. I am not sure if it is fixed yet, but technically there is no official TWRP for our OnePlus8. I did backup my partitions with one of them floating around but with that one, including another phone back in the day, I am able to backup but when trying to restore, it always gave me errors doing so. Not sure others experiences but as far as I know, there is no default encryption password.
You can try setting a pin in the security settings of your phone and going back to TWRP and seeing if the pin will take at that section.
