Getting frustrated with bad UI

I had many android phones before and I never had this many issues getting basic things to work.
Most options are not where they are supposed to or not at all. Instead of spamming further threads I figured I will put them all in one place.
On my phone the swipe and none (lock) options are grayed out "Disabled by administrator, encryption policy or credential storage". Huh ? Also I added my smartwatch as trusted device and it still shows lock screen. Also smart lock settings are nowhere to be found.
No way to control music without unlocking (setting it in notification menu didn't work for me).
Standard quick settings menu is missing (even though in review videos it's there). The command center is terrible. It takes too many taps to access certain things.
Default email client doesn't work with office365.
I want to love this phone so bad, but it makes it so difficult.
Does anyone else have any other frustrations ?

OK, I figured how to disable lock screen. In security options I "cleared credentials" and those options appeared.

I am unable to install 'Evernote' from the play store. I get error code 504. I have tried everything to resolve the issue including vpn from another country without luck. Could anyone out there with a Blu Pure XL please try to install this app to see if they get the same error? Thanks.

Same boat. I even emailed Blu's support about the Evernote issue & the fact that this phone does not have quick charge even though it is advertised as such 2 days ago. Have yet to hear back from them. Gonna call tomorrow.

Whats interesting about this is every review unit video on youtube prior to release shows the Pure XL with the same swipe down stock lollipop notification window & quick settings as the Nexus 6. I wonder why Blu changed this on the release units to the swipe up quick settings & two tier notification system(not complaining cause I prefer it, just curious), and if that was the reason for the 3 week holdup from the initial release date.

You're absolutely welcome. Contacted Blu today. They told me that they would have to look into the quick charge issue and get back to me(yea right), and as far as the evernote app goes I would have to contact the developer. Interesting thing about that is that Evernote doesnt allow you to talk to them unless you are a premium subscriber. LOL! I was not aware of this. Looks like Ill be moving all my notes to Keep or Onenote for the time
being.

Found another annoyance. Led light is blinking green but there is no notifications on the phone and no way to get rid of it unless I disable the led completely. Also autobrightness doesn't work most of the time. On the verge of returning it.
OK restarting fixes the notification, but still...

BLU Pure XL
so far too many apps that work on my Nexus 5 running 5.1.1 but do not install or run on the BLU Pure XL running 5.1.
Out of Milk (sync does not work)
Evernote (504 install error)
I guess I will have to return the BLU. Super hardware, sloppy software it seems.

If you received a text or call, clearing the notifications from the notification bar is not enough. One have to go to the call and touch it to mark it as read. Kind of like an email, it does it for me.

App notifications + Wifi? Some answers some questions

So I have stumbled across a bug that is rather frustrating. This bug was that I could not receive notifications in "real time"( if that makes sense) basically I mean very delayed. A fellow XDA member pointed me out to a thread that has a solution for this which goes as follows:
Settings-> Additional settings->Battery& performance -> Manage apps battery use->chose apps.
After that its pretty straight forward.
My current problem is that I still get delayed notifications in Wi-Fi. I have tested this out on about 10 different Wi-Fi networks. I am sure this is some stupid MiUi setting hidden somewhere making the phone go in a deep sleep state or a battery mode or something..
Before people start recommending installing CM, I am not interested in it, until CM bugs are fixed, Also this is not a solution that answers my question.
I hope the solution above has helped other people as it has for me, for the Wi-Fi issue any thoughts or suggestions are more than welcome.. (Haven't tried the IPV4 thingie I read in XDA but that doesnt seem like a solution that I can apply when I am at someone elses house or out =/ )

I don't know if we are talking about the same issue, but I have seen delayed notifications on many phones and Android versions in the past. Also, the web is full of forums and sites where people complain about this. I think this is more a Google Cloud Messaging bug than a Xiaomi or Miui bug.
Maybe the people here suffering from this issue can try this app

I can't say if i have this issue because i didn't got much notifications in the last days. At least i didn't noticed something. Also my banking app notifies me immediately when i do banking stuff or pay somewhere.
Also, the people who gets disconnected when they turn off the screen on Miui, there is a setting in the security app under battery profiles which says by default "clear on lockscreen". Maybe making an own profile with a different setting helps here

In what settings? Security app or Push Notification Fixer app (in this app you just have to hit "apply settings" and reboot)

I read about "heartbeat interval", but if the problem is it, notification should not work correctly even when screen is on. While it seems here we are speaking when the screen is off, right?

I made some research, and i wrote all settings that could be interesting. I write them here just to be sure all settings was checked.
These settings should be adjusted, besides your pushing apps (wapp, facebook,etc.), even for:
- Google Services Framework
- Google Account Manager
- Google Play services
- Google Play Store
Code:
1.Goto Security->Permissions->Autostart and give autostart permissions to the Google Services Framework,Google Account Manager and your Messaging apps like whatsapp,hike,etc.
2.Goto Security folder>permissions> and give permissions to each apps.
3.Goto Security->Data Usage->Data Usage Stats and Select your app . After that check if background data is enabled. If it is not enabled, enable it
4.Goto Security->Data Usage->Data Saver->Manage Apps and turn off optimization for the messaging apps.
5.Goto Settings>Additional Settings>Battery>Manage app battery usage, now disable/turn off the following options.
- Manage app battery usage
- Restrict apps when battery is low
Or
- Select "Choose apps to restrict" and unselect/untick the apps from the list
6.Goto security folder and click the check button.
7.If you have already opened these apps you will see these apps in the memory tab.
Click on the memory tab and uncheck these apps and any other apps you desire or you can simply go to recents panel and lock this app by swiping down.
8.Goto settings<security<locatIon<location acces<permissions<messenger<display pop up....
Finally reboot the device and check.
Do you hav adjuested all these checks? If yes, it is clear there is a GREAT bug in MIUI rom, or better miui kernel.

People, don't try nothing, this is simply a MIUI bug!!!

I don't even have any of these options on my Mi4C. For me it looks like all those Google apps are hidden? I can only change permissions or power settings for WhatsApp, can't find Google Services Framework etc
I only get WhatsApp messages reliably if my phone is unlocked and WhatsApp is open. And can only connect to WhatsApp Web if my phone unlocked and WhatsApp open.... Really frustrating.
Keep finding I've missed messages from hours ago cause they never showed up in notifications.

Once i set my apps that require push to Autostart it all worked.

Location Icon in Status Bar Always Displayed

At some point the location icon that is sometimes displayed in right side of the status bar came on, on my device, and never goes away.
I'm used to this coming on when an app is using location services and then turning off when I'm done with it. Rebooting my device makes no difference, it's still there. When I look under location in my settings, they only app that it says has recently made a location request is Google Play Services. But this should not be causing the icon to always display.
Any thoughts about what's going on or how else to troubleshoot this?

Yes.

Yeah, changing the settings from device only to high accuracy makes the icon go away. But why should the location icon always be on when the phone is set it device only mode?

It is related to Google, the cards. I had the same thing on my XL 1. You do need fine enabled as you found out, or turn off the cards.

By cards do you mean the recently used apps list? When I clear that list the icon still remains.
And how do you turn off the cards?

Oh, I got it.
Turns out disabling permissions for location for the Google App solves the problem.

Well, strangely the problem has come back. Disabling location permission for the Google app clearly solved the problem (because I turned it on and off several times to verify this). But now today the icon won't go away again, even with location disabled for the Google app. More weirdly, turning location off altogether on the phone does not make the icon go away. Also disabling the Google app does not help.
But just setting location to high accuracy (plus restarting) does still make it go away.

Heh same problem here. But I'm on a Sony... Disabling location entirely does nothing. Not sure if it's a play services bug or Android. Battery drain is nominal, went through all the apps with location history. Anyone any clue?

Yup. But even if I turn the location off, the icon remains I'm starting to think its a bug, the security update happened recently.

On Nexus / Pixel devices this icon should only appear when an application is requesting location information from your device.
With other brands of Android phones the location icon sometimes has a slightly different meaning in the sense that it might indicate that location services are simply on.
I would revisit your installed apps and look to see what you have running that might be requesting your location. You can start revoking the location access permission from the app(s) you suspect might be causing this to help you narrow down and find the culprit.

Yup,, I noticed just yesterday the last beta for Tapatalk requested for location to be turned on. Notification was always showing in status bar. Turned that setting off in Settings>Apps & Notifications>Tapatalk app and turned that permission off.

Yeah, I do something similar. I don't have the problem if my phone is set to high accuracy, but if it's set to device only and I restart the phone then the location icon shows up right away and won't go away. I then have to set the phone to high accuracy, restart the phone, the location is not there are restart, and then I set it back to device only.
The problem is not a third party app requesting location. I'm very careful about what permissions I give to apps. And I had the problem before I really installed any apps. I don't know what it is and never really resolved this, but I am also suspicious of Google Play Services or some other low level Google process.
I suspect not a lot of people run into this issue, because they either just disable location services or set it to high accuracy, but not to device only.

In your case it is the Google Now cards...that you swipe right to get too. It's the location service to set the weather. I am certain of it.

Xperias are usually running very close to vanilla hence why I'm saying 'me too' to this bug. (also the xda thread on my XZp is a ghost town - on this reasoning the next phone will deffo be a pixel or a 1+).
Anyway, i suspect the issue has something to do with GnssLocationProvider returning an error on a wakelock by com.android.server.location.gnsslocationprovider - gpsrequest. But that's speculation.
Another thing I tried with limited success was to clear data for Google play services, services framework, google and play store. After reinit the location only appeared as designed - when in use. Phone reboot only gives about half an hour before something triggers location and the annoying icon stays on.
However, 12 hours later, on BT connect, location updated and the icon persisted. From what I can tell there is no additional battery drain - i'm using the third party GPS Status app which sends a notification whenever the GPS is engaged and it only comes up on regular play services update and of course maps and other location enabled apps.
Also tried force stopping all of the user apps, then main system apps (google and oem services) and then backend services till at some point it halted and rebooted. Icon was still there.
For now I disabled the location icon and only left the Gps status app to notify whenever gps is actually running. Right now my guess is play services acting up although this behavior started after Jan security update. What's worth mentioning is that i'm using the bets of google apps including play services. My dad has the same phone with the same config but no betas or anything and he does not have this issue. So i'm less inclined to think it's a device specific but rather a google play services bug.

I don't use Google Now or Google Assistant. I have no Google based weather update running. I have that stuff totally disabled.

For me this issue has been there from day one, when I got the phone in October (I ordered the day the phoen launched). So it does not have to do with the January update for me.
That aside, how do you disable the location icon?

EMUI 11 "power-intensive app" toggle gone?

Hey guys! I finally got the EMUI 11 update a few days ago, but there is something that's driving me crazy since. My P40 Pro is googlefied, and it has been and is working perfectly with GMS, but since I updated I keep getting a notification that the Google Services Framework is a power-intensive app and Huawei recommends me force closing it. I had these before with some apps on EMUI 10 too, like with Line and Facebook, but there used to be an option to turn off the "power-intensive" notification for a certain app. With EMUI 11 that seems to be gone, and I keep getting this notification about Google Services Framework at least twice a day. It is super annoying and I can't find a way to turn it off. I checked around the Battery settings, in the app settings, but the option seems to be gone. I hope one of you figured out how to deal with this, I really don't want to downgrade but I think I will if I can't fix this issue. Looking for help, thanks in advance!

This new updates that I done last week also same with popups about battery intense app for Google framework and GMS.. solution is just ignore it from the setting in battery... maybe next update will have a fix hopefully

Thanks for the reply! At least I know I'm not alone with the issue. Could you clarify your solution? How to ignore it in the battery settings? I couldn't find an option for it.

Okay I'm back after some testing. So first thing I tried was cleaning the cache of the Play Store, Google Services and Google Services Framework -> did not help. After that I compared the version info of said apps on my P40 Pro to my Huawei Mate 20 Pro, and even though the Store was up to date, i found out that the Google Services and GSF hasn't updated on my P40 Pro. I installed an app called "Launcher Google Play Services Settings (Shortcut)", and through that I was able to update my Google Services. It didn't break the installed GMS, but didn't fix the power intensive app notification either. After that I updated the Google Services Framework manully, downloaded the exact version my Mate 20 Pro has (10-6475670). Update went well, It did not break my GMS install, everything works perfectly but hasn't fixed the notification issue. Now I'm testing a workaround that seems to be working, but I'll give it an other day to see if it really works. If it does, I'll post my solution here.

Happy new year guys! Sorry for the late reply, as it fixed my problem I forgot about this topic. So the workaround is pretty easy, and it's about disabling notifications for the Optimizer app. EMUI doesn't have the option to disable notifications for Optimizer by default, but it is possible with a third party app called NCleaner, search "Notification Blocker & Cleaner & Heads-up Off" in the Play store. After install it will ask for permission to access notifications, then while the Notification Cleaner is turned on, click on the 3 dots on top right corner, go to settings. Search for the Optimizer app, and click on it (no need to mess around with the toggle, click on the Optimizer itself) and a menu will pop-up where you can completely disable the notifications for said app. After you turned it off, you can actually uninstall NCleaner, and the notifications will keep being turned off for the Optimizer even if you restart your phone, except if you go to the settings of EMUI, and open the Optimizer notifications menu, it will turn itself back on automatically. So install NCleaner, disable the notification for Optimizer with the help of it, uninstall the app, and don't open the notification settings of Optimizer or you'll have to turn it off in NCleaner again. This is actually not the main functionality for NCleaner, it can also hide notifications automatically for the apps, but I think it's easier to just disable it as it is, so NCleaner doesn't have to run in the background eating up battery.

Not working for me. Optimizer keeps coming up each time an sms has been blocked

Install adbapp then uninstall it. Disabling it doesn't work. No need for other apps.

Question Trun off additional step after facial recognition?

When I use facial recognition to unlock and app, after my face is recognized, before I can go into the app, I get a screen that is showing a message: "Verified. Tap confirm to continue". I am trying to get rid of that message and avoid the unnecessary extra step to press the confirm button before I can access the app. I am told by an app manufactured that it is a setting on my Samsung S22 Ultra with Android 12. But I am coming from an old Pixel phone and cannot find this setting on my new 22Ultra. Can someone direct me to the setting to turn off that extra step after facial recognition works? Thanks!

Sounds like you've installed some 3rd party app that does this. The default S22 behaviour doesn't show this message.
I can see you asked on other fourms, and they suggested things I was going to say. But it seems like some third party app is either doing this, or enforcing it.

Yes I posted on another forum but no solution there yet, just a few good suggestions that don't work. I don't have any other apps that enforce this behavior though. And I pressed support at RoboForm pretty hard about it and they insist it is not something in their app even though RoboForm is an app that it happens in. I am thinking it is when certain 3rd party apps are opened using face recognition, the Android system does not acknowledge those apps for some reason and pops up the message to do a 2nd confirmation before it will allow the apps to open. Thanks for the reply.

Have you tried unistalling Roboform to test if that fixes it?

I have found a few other apps that call up the exact same message so it is not just Roboform. I did uninstall and reinstall Roboform today for another reason and called up a health record app that does the same thing. It happened in the health app even with Roboform uninstalled.
I think we have determined that it is a system message. An app may call it up or trigger it when using face recognition but it is not generated by the app itself. If we knew what it was called then it would be easier to track it down. within Android or the Samsung settings. if it is even in the settings somewhere.

Yea, it's likely going to be a system message, that is called by certain apps in certain circumstances. But the only way you'll find it is to remove apps a few at a time until it stops appearing.

I get the same message and have looked everywhere for a setting. It doesn't exist. Pretty stupid behavior for sure.

Is there a solution? I have the same thing with Microsoft apps. So stupid..

Try: Settings, Biometrics and Security, Face Recognition, And untick: Stay on lockscreen until swipe.
For me, double tapping the screen or using the power button to wake the phone, triggers the face unlock which then quickly unlocks the phone with no other input.
Is this just one app, or all apps?
