Pixel 2 Verizon OEM unlocking - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

I have seen many outdated guides on unlocking the bootloader that don't work on the verizon pixel 2.
I just wanted to check if there are any new ones with the android Q beta (this probably hasn't changed anything).
Thanks, and I don't expect much.

was there ever a free bootloader unlock or only sunshine?

I like my droid mini so much I went out and got another.
To my good fortune, I discovered this "new" one has SU4.21 !!!
That means the efuse has not been blown and I could bootloader unlock.
The question is, was there ever a free method or is sunshine the only way?
Dreaming of cyanogenmod and twrp on the mini, would be perfect.
aha, motopocalypse by the original researcher Dan Rosenberg

Droid Mini/Maxx is not listed but there is always a tiny chance it will work.
Well NOW there's a free bootloader unlock

Now to wait for someone who knows what they are doing to see if it will work on the mini/maxx/ultra

No, there isn't. Just like the other 10 motorola device forums you posted this in, this vulnerability is for MSM8974 ONLY, and its not new.

very sorry for the posts, I was excited and genuinely thought this was a new cross-motorola exploit and didn't realize the specifics
8960 is different enough from the 8974 to be immune?
again my apologies
ps. the Droid Razr series was also 8960, how come motopocalype doesn't work on the mini/maxx ?

If your phone is eligible, Sunshine is a cheap way to unlock your Bootloader. $25.00 last time I checked

No worries. I haven't looked into Razr much, but typically these vulnerabilities are quickly patched by Motorola. I would guess that device released after motopocalypse was released or was patched shortly after.

very exciting update
I've been told (very reliably) that a new exploit is on the way and will work on the 8960 pro (ie. mini/maxx/ultra)
unclear if it still requires the SU4 rom from June 2014 vs will work on the newer SU6 patched rom (even sunshine will not work on SU6) but it was verified by directly examining aboot and that the trustzone is only slightly different on the 8960pro vs 8974
(this time I won't post it in a dozen places - I suspect the release will pretty much spread like wildfire on its own)

I would too but it's not out yet.
If I had to guess I'd suspect he is doing the proper notifications first to Motorola before releasing it. In which case as long as we don't accept OTA updates we should be okay.

Will for one your not well informed Motorola is not sending down any more OTA updates for us they told us they were not they left us dead in the water and stuck on 4.4.4. Also you don't have to contact Motorola about bootloader unlocks don't know who told you that and who would take the time all its doing is allowing us to install user made/custom roms and android is open source so its legal.

1. there are plenty of minor updates from SU4 to SU6 that were OTA and it stayed 4.4.4, they are just patches and there could easily be one that makes it SU6-7.4 - are you misunderstanding me that I am saying they are doing something more? What I meant was, if there is a a SU6-7.4 do NOT install it - though we can still always roll back to SU6-7(.0) via RSDlite - the nightmare would be a SU7 that prevents rollback to SU6
2. I assure you there is another bl unlock coming, this is completely confirmed.
I just don't know exactly when he is releasing it and I don't want to pester him - he's already proven he knows darn well what he is doing and is fully capable of producing the unlock and has already done so for other models - the catch is the unlock is not going to be phone specific so someone is going to have to package it for us
You've got me curious now. I haven't seen anyone else release a bootloader unlock in years.

Oh you know who it is, he just did the other one.
He assures me this one will work on far more devices and even inspected the aboot on the droid mini for me - exact quote:
the TrustZone code there is slightly different, but it has a variation on the vulnerability I'm releasing and so it should work more-or-less out of the box

He didn't release a bootloader unlock for "the other one" either. In fact, the POC he did release required an unlocked bootloader, and custom kernel.

I'm not sure what you mean. Motorola sent him a bootloader locked X and he unlocked it. He even shows every step and released the source.
Unless I am completely missing something.

He (re)documented the vulnerability and documented a full exploitation technique(and did a great job). However the code he released can not be used to unlock a production device. The code requires an unlocked bootloader and a custom kernel. If you read the comments on his disclosure page, you will see that.

that sounds really weird though, why would you bl unlock an already bl unlocked device?

I'm not implying he's lying it all. The vulnerability he documented is certainly legitimate. I'm just stating you might not get some "clickheretounlock.exe". Somebody might have to do some work to code/package/turn the vulnerability into working unlock solution. Or maybe he will do it.

oh I get that distinct feeling that he does not intend to release an actual executable, for reasons unclear, either legal or less responsibility
but I suspect he is going to lay out the steps pretty clearly and likely some source code and there is enough talent and desire around here to make it happen shortly after that

Which Smartphones have Unlockable Bootloader & Can be rooted?

Post amended for better notability:
According to Sir Zelendel's recommendations and this website's list of top smartphones, I have the four products to choose the refurbished/pre-used smartphones from:
Google Pixel
Samsung Galaxy
One Plus
Honor

So my next query is:
Can the earlier editions/versions of these products also have their bootloaders unlocked/re-locked and be rooted/unrooted?
The explanation behind my brief query in details:
I have assimilated what my teacher here has advised.
I decided that I will buy a 2nd hand, Out-Of-Warranty smartphone for regular use and all sorts of experimentation.
I have been perusing the forum threads. I then searched the forum threads via Google (I know how to ) for better results . Appears that I have found some encouraging posts.

The problem is that people don't leave proper information about whether their problem was solved. This creates problems for the newcomers. They dont have enough guidance.

Skimmed them. A few of them look encouraging. Will take some time to assimilate
I also found that the forum lists the following as the top SmPh:
Samsung Galaxy S9
One Plus 5T
Google Pixel 2
One Plus 5
Samsung Galaxy S8+
I assume that these mobiles can have their bootloader unlocked as well as the OS rooted?
I remember from my earlier lesson that Honor and One Plus 5T are definitely compatible with my plan to experiment.
Since these are new arrivals in the market, I might not find a 2nd hand SmPh from these said models.
So based on your vast experience, please feel free to advise me to go ahead and buy a SmPh in which I could exercise either of the two options: unlock the bootloader and root/unroot the OS.

Just a little clearification. All devices come locked when you open the box. Unlocking the bootloader and rooting it are allowed on those devices and on the One plus devices it doesnt void your warranty. Unlocking and rooting are really easy. a couple of PC commands, and one zip flash and boom you are unlocked and rooted.
Thank you, Sir.
But can those smartphones, that can easily be unrooted and their bootloaders, unlocked, be again re-rooted and bootloaders, locked, after necessary amendments, respectively?
After I have bought one of these devices I shall proceed to seek advice on how to do these.
In the meanwhile, and needless to say, I shall also search the forum posts using Google, for further info.
Thank you, Sir, for replying to the post.

Yes removing root is as simple as flashing a stock rom and then relocking the bootloader with one PC command.
If you have Firefox on PC you can use the XDA search plug in. It is far better then the built in search.

Not all devices can have an unlocked bootloader. The vast majority cant. I have never even heard of that device so I cant say for sure. But is you cant unlock the bootloader with the switch in developer settings and the PC command then you may have a device that you cant unlock the bootloader on.

Yes, Sir. In Linux it is very simple, almost a no-brainer. But I don't know why the Android programmers have made the issue complicated.

In Linux you don't really remove root access. It is still there in the system. Not so on Android due to it being turned off in the kernel and having no built in UI.

This part I don't really understand because of my lack of experience with android.
I am studying android-x86, but I am not making much of a headway.
I would really want to know as to how is it turned off in the Kernel. Which portions of the kernels are removed, or hashed/silenced.

Can I root with a locked bootloader

It's been a long time since I've been online(Samsung note3 lumia 950xl and back to note3) but now I'm back coz of the mate 9 I've got from my wife.
Question seen as above I'm on android 8.0, i think with a locked bootloader.
Reading all sorts of stuff that scars me.
Can this phone be rooted and custom rom(med?) , simple yes or no... But if there is a yes.... Please paste a video link(I'm better in watching and listening then reading) or past xda link.
No matter the answer still thanks in advance greats mike
Did you get the unlock bootloader code by July? No? Then no. (or read this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/development/unlock-bootloader-t3869735 )
Sorry for my late reply, a to bad but also a shame so that the future no other phones of the brands can be flashed.
Thanks for your reply

There is a possible workaround which I did yesterday(1/21/2019).
First, I had upgraded version of Android 8.0 (MHA-L29 8.0.0.375(C567)(Stock Official) and possible obtain the bootloader code when I start this process.
Here is what I did.
1. Downgrade to Android 7.0(EMUI 5.0) by using Huawei's HiSuite software
Click "Update" and select earlier version.
Current : MHA-L29 8.0.0.375(C567)(Official)
Earlier : MHA-L29C567B190(Official) | 2.45GB | Android 7.0(EMUI 5.0)
2. Using 3rd Party tool/service(about $5), I was able to get the bootloader code
In my case, I used DC-Unlocker tool(FREE) and purchasing 4 credits($4.71).
With the bootloader code, you can move to the next steps(root, custom ROMs, etc...)
Hope it helps!

If it was popular then there would be threads and TWRP and ROMs but the fact that there's not tells you, it's not....
I think you are righ
I bought s10+ over it
I gave up on it. And the developer that did a Magisk flashable mod I think has also moved on. I tested for him but the device was not very popular. Thinking about trying to sell it or just gifting it to someone. Haven't even turned it on for weeks.
My SM-N935F NoteFE Floyd V5
DEX or HDMI support, is the most important feature for a DEVELOPER TO CREATE FOR NOTE 10LITE!Hardware wise is capable, but SOFTWARE is not permitting this feature. I hope that a DEVELOPER will be so kind to HELP on that!!!
And propably a valid twrp version to flash it!
maybe someone, i.e. @butchieboy ?, smart is capable of porting twrp to the Note 10 lite with this instruction which seems to be easy for linux users or with those skills. See here: https://appuals.com/how-to-port-twrp-for-android-without-source/
On my side I am a bit familiar with Android Image Kitchen for windows (so far only used for themeing twrp for other devices to my needs, which worked excellent) but the above guide says it should be done with AIK for Linux, so I am afraid to mix (brick) things up....

If it was as simple as stated in those instructions I would have had this fixed ages ago, but it is not. It relies on signatures that need to be generated to match the devices vbmeta.img file otherwise it will not boot. I tried this, but got nowhere with the signatures and little support from other devs to help me with creating the signatures. @butchieboy has a Magisk flashable I created to get some mods in the device but other things like screen mirroring or HDMI being fixed need to be done directly on the image of the device. I will release an R version of the latest firmware N770FXXS7DUB1_N770FOJM7DUB1_XSG, which is the one I have and release it soon.
Whats up Javix. I was testing Twrp for another developer a week ago. We got knowhere. I give up on the 10 lite as At&t has blocked it and i can no longer use it on my Network. So I basically have a Mint condition phone that is useless to me. Damn At&t are starting to do this with any F version device when you try to use it on their network it automatically suspends your number as an unauthorized device. I bought a S20FE unlocked bootloader Twrp and rooted. Good luck with 10 lite, mine is back in the box..lol

Snapdragon can't be rooted past bootloader 2. As far as roms go, there are only stock roms, but somewhere on the forum its mentioned about GSI roms, but VOLTE is broken because its always been a samsung issue and not much work being done. I'm sure there are a few people out there working on personal builds, but nothing released to the public that I've seen. (Aside from Exynos)
