Hi
Ive recently rooted my phone using v root (the chinese version). I needed to root the phone to remove some unwanted firmware, after i amended the firmware i unrooted the phone which deleted the chinse superuser. I then unistalled the apps the chinese superuser left, i also found some sort of files left by the rooting app which i deleted (these apps could not be opended by the phone). I ve run AVG which confirms my phone is not under threat but wondered if the rooting app will have left anything unwanted.
Thanks
Hi,
Thanks For using XDA Assist
Rooting allows unrestricted access to applications and there is a chance that some kind of background script and/or other malicious app might be installed in the background. One of the common ways to check the apps pushed/installed is to use application like root explorer and check the date stamps of files in /system. Files with unusual date stamps might be the ones modified.
It's better if you restore your phone to stock firmware and root again. Try these methods to root your phone

Good day !
What specifically am I lookin for, won't some of the system dates have been changed because of the root. I've now unroofed the phone.

Unless there is a specific method used on ALL of your system files ,your system dates will remain unchanged. I don't think someone will resort to that method imo.
But you have a point. Rooting might modify some important system files.
Unrooting is not a complete solution . Flashing back to a stock ROM/firmware is the complete solution. After unrooting ,you need to change read only status to read write which can only be done if you are rooted. Or via running a shell exploit. It's a catch 22 situation.
Thats why I would recommend flashing Stock Firmware if possible !
Have a good day
Hello any help getting me closer to someplace I can find help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a used GS3 on Boost Mobile. the phone is running stock rom, in recovery mode it says it is
KOT49H.L710VPUDND8
Model SPH-L710
Baseband-L710VPUCNJ3
Build-KOT49H.L710VPUCNJ3
Android-4.4.2
No custom recovery installed!
No attempt at flashing any roms yet!
just rooted to do housecleaning .
I rooted using Chainfires CF-auto-root method, everything went correctly. I then updated Supersu to the latest Pro version. I did not uninstall any apps yet but did install a bunch. I installed Titanium Backup pro and did manage to backup everything before this issue started.
I noticed I had an issue with the extSdCard not being able to be used by TB and looked for a solution. I did add a line to /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml but it did not work so I returned it to normal. I then noticed I could no longer make backups TB was giving "insufficient storage" and failed. if i tried to change the backup location in TB I noticed the default now had a red folder with " cannot write to this location"
I know I may have changed something in the platform.xml by mistake or at least that should be the first place to look but I swear I made no mistakes while editing the file.
I have tried to create and delete folder and files on my internal sdcard using root enabled Es File Explorer but it fails everytime. on a side not I can create and delete from the extSdCard.
I feel this will only get worse if not fixed please point me to the correct place for help! Thanks
Oh and I did post this question in the Sprint/gs3/q&a help forum.
Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. The Sprint Q&Q forum is the proper place to post this as you've already done. So I'm going to close this thread.
Hi everyone,
I own a oneplus one (carrier unlocked), and am seriously thinking about rooting, but I have a few questions that I'd like answered before I get going. First of all I my reasons for rooting are: -phone automation (I use the app Droid automation from wackdev) there are some functions (for example interrupt mode) which are only available if rooted. -Secondly I hate bloatware (especially google play games which is super fustrating if one wants to try out a new game one has just downloaded). Other than those two reasons I am not sure whether rooting is for me as I find the prospect of custom roms and bricking my phone daunting.
So first of all would you advise rooting for me or do you know of other solutions to my problem (the first thing is clearly only avilabe when rooted). I also am not sure how to go about doing it, as in all videos/posts I have seen it's all about getting a new Kernel or rom, which I don't want (or maybe only later).
Lastly I have backed up my data using the steps in this (I can't link because this is my first post but If you are interested it is from techrepublic and it's called: How to create a full backup of your Android device without root) guide, but am still paranoid about losing my data. So does this work.
Thanks a lot in advance
HogliMogli
PS: Assuming I was to root but then not like it or encounter problems can anyone link a guide to unrooting.
PPS: I am not sure if this is a kernel or rom or something else, but how would I get stock android??
Hi,
Welcome here. So for your questions... two reasons why you would need root based on what you want to do:
- Be able to do the automation if you identified options you can't access without root
- De-bloat your phone by removing the Google applications that can be removed only by using root access apps removal softwares (that you can find on the playstore). Be careful and install an alternative launcher like Nova launcher, if you remove all Google apps except from the Play store, then the Google search bar will be removed from the COS Launcher and make it crash. Not a big deal but annoying.
Else, on your daily life, I guess you won't need root.
Will it wipe all your data? The answer is yes, even if you backed up all the content of your sdcard (/data/media), you'll do a factory reset while unlocking your bootloader, so you'll loose all your apps, you'd better save your text messages as well as contacts, etc...
There is a guide here to unlock bootloader without wiping data, you can find it easily.
Then, for the "How To", you have the wonderful guide from @Heisenberg
Heisenberg's How-To Guide For Beginners
Plus the global OPO threads index
Edit: Before you begin to mess up with your phone, make a backup of your EFS/IMEI partitions, you'll find instructions in @Heinsenberg's guide, step 11.
Hey guys, I've got a problem. I want to restore my com.whatsapp dir in /data/data/, is that possible somehow? Someone had a similar problem back in 2015 and it is said that he could not restore any, but I have software which backed up all videos and photos, but it didn't recover the files I wanted (because you only could choose things like: doc's, pics, movies etc).
Do you guys have an idea, please?
Or do you guys know how to verify whatsapp? I've been using my old number for 5 years now, 2-3 years ago I got a new sim card. Since then, I've always made a backup with titanium or took the backup from whatsapp itself and if you enter ur number and whatsapp recognized a backup, it didn't have to verify anymore. But it's been changed now somehow, they want to verify one's number and then it'll first try backing up (but I do not have that sim anymore). And unfortunately, titanium backup made a corrupt file exactly with the whatsapp file <_<
Thanks in Advance!
WhatsApp doesn't store your media (received images, videos, chat messages, etc.) in the com.whatsapp folder in /data/data, but it stores it in your internal sdcard itself in a folder named WhatsApp. Take that folder with you and put it in the new phone/tablet where you want to continue your WhatsApp usage.
Verification is straight-forward. All you have to do is do a fresh install of WhatsApp on this new phone/tab of yours and start it. If you had placed this backed-up WhatsApp folder on the internal sdcard of the new device, WhatsApp will ask you and automatically import this media on your new device.
Hope that helps.
Hello, thank you for your help.
As I said, I don't want the media, I want the data of whatsapp. I backed up all the media anyway and the recover programs only recovered the media, but I want to recover the whatsapp data.
"WhatsApp will ask you and automatically import this media on your new device."
That is how it used to be, I think they changed their system. You now first have to verify your number and afterwards, you're importing ur whatsapp backup folder. after verifying to another number (not the one I wanted) my old data has been backuped.

In that case, I don't think its going to be easy to retrieve the old chat contents easily unless you have WhatsApp running on your older device. If you have it running on the older device by any chance, you can refer to this manual and create a Chat Backup to your Google Drive, so that later you can restore it from Google Drive on your new phone/tablet. I suppose this is the only way to create WhatsApp chat backups going forward.
Well, I flashed another rom, so I don't got any possibility to return to that version. That's why I ask for an recovery software which also can recover root files. I didn't think it would be so hard to find, because there are some which recovery plenty of other files, I just needed one which includes /data/data folder AND any files, no matter which ending they have (like *.*, where * is a wildcard for any matches), so I hoped someone of you would know any software?

What software did you originally use to take the backup? If it was Titanuium Backup, then what went wrong while restoration?
In case you have the actual file system backup of /data/data/com.whatsapp, you can directly try pasting that folder in the new setup using Root Explorer (or similar app) and see whether it works. But of course, you'll need to be rooted on your new setup.

[ROOT NEEDED]
Maybe GT recovery is the app you are looking for. Basically this app recovers your lost data even after a hard reset by exploiting some resources in the root directory. By this app you can recover the whole folder of your WhatsApp. Just type in the full directory path in the app.
May this help you.
Unfortunately, the exactly the whatsapp backup is a corrupted .rar file, only has 0.0 kb data... @tiger1487 I got root on my phone, but the problem with GT recovery is, that you need the paid version for using it. But tbh, I'm not willing to pay 15e to try if it eventually could recover my needed data, so I'd ask you, if you know another software which is similar to this one? I can't search for one unfortunately, because if you google for it, you just get some to backup a factory image via cwm or twrp or something :x

I am a new member so i cant send you the link of the all free GT recovery but i can tell you that just type 'GT recovery cracked' in the google search engine. You will get it for free[Tip: If you type 'cracked' in front of any app name on google search, you will get it for free, just look for some trusted website like 'onhax' or 'okhax' or 'crackedapkfull']

And I forgot to tell that GT recovery is now more updated. Now there is no need to type in the exact path. There is a direct option for Recover WhatsApp. Likewise there are other options too for messenger, call logs, etc if you need it?

Oh, you were talking of the app, thought of the windows software. The app itself is free, isn't it? I tried the app, it stucks at 0% scanning and I don't think it'll work. Tried different apps, it seems they're only looking for sdcard/whatsapp/database instead of data/data/com.whatsapp so it would be awesome if I could set a path
Thank you very much for your help.

Yes its free...windows version is paid but my app doesn't stuck. Mine one is working perfectly. See that you try some other older versions of the app too. Maybe you downloaded the version that stucks at 0% or something like that.

Sorry for answering late :x
Okay, it seems that my root was broken somehow, but now as it works, the program tells me I am not rooted (now I am for sure!) and wants me to download Kingo root or something. But anyway, I had GBWhatsapp installed on my phone, so I think the app won't help me because it would search for com.whatsapp instead of com.gbwhatsapp (could that be possible?)
I found the app Undeleter, this has some more path search options but unfortunately not one where I can specify my desired path. So, I hope you got one last idea?

Okay, I'm not a techie and I want to know how to backup everything on my phone before I attempt to root my OnePlus One using KingRoot.
At first I naively thought that copying all files and folders from my phone to my laptop would work, but 3 things seem to suggest it's not as easy as that:
I get an error message every time I try copying the files in the ColorNote folder
I saw a mention somehwere that to backup something called EFS you need to run a special app
I'm guessing that my contacts and SMS messages will not be backed up just by copying files and folders from my phone.
So my question is how do I backup *everything* (not just those things I have specifically refered to here) just in case something goes wrong when running KingRoot?
I would prefer not to have to upload my data to the cloud to back it up if at all possible.
Thanks fine people!

Do you plan to unlock bootloader and flash custom recovery? If not and you just want root, you can safely skip all of this backup part as kingroot/kingoroot won't do any harm to your device.
Also if you don't like kinguser as default granting roots app,you can change it into SuperSu too.

Hi and thanks for your reply.
I don't plan to unlock the bootloader. I also wasn't planning on flashing a custom recovery (tbh I don't even know what "flashing" means), however I was thinking of using the KingRoot desktop version and their website states that "the desktop KingRoot version can only be flashed using recovery custom tools". I'm guessing that means that when I run KingRoot it will automatically flash a custom recovery.
BUT if doing that means that my data is wiped then I will stick to the android version even though at the moment I am trying to write an absolute minimum of data to my phone. (My reason for wanting to root is to have one last attempt to recover a load of data that I lost off my phone using a file recovery program that requires root access).
I know that if I run KingRoot just to root it is not supposed to delete any data, but I thought that it was generally thought to be good practice to backup your data before the process anyway just in case something untoward happens (in fact I *think* I read a reccommendation to do that on the official KingRoot website).
Thanks for the video link & tip and, of course, your advice!

No don't use the desktop version.Use the mobile version and make sure you've fast net connection.Kingroot doesn't install recovery. It just roots, though, ofc not as good as rooting from recovery but still enough for daily tasks.
