I am going to pick up a larger fresh new Micro SD card for my S10+. Will we see a real benifit with the s10 if we grab a card with A2? Definitely getting u3 v30 and keeping this post short, just wondering if we will see real world benifit with the a2 micro sd and the s10 this early on?
From my understanding, Samsung was supposed to start supporting Android Adoptable Storage in Android Pie, but reports are saying that it was not included in the Android Pie update for the S9 and N9. If there isn't any support for Android Adoptable Storage, I don't believe you'll see any benefit to A1 or A2 support.

Now days, an external storage on microSD card gives just a piece of mind, an extra space on your phone to keep your pictures, music, videos, ebooks etc,etc... You didn't mention what's the internal storage space is on your phone, let's assume 128GB which is really a lot. Granted, your system/apps itself will take 30, well it's Samsung, so maybe 40GB, but what's left is still a plenty. If you want to take an advantage of those great cameras recording 4k or slo-mo videos then you'd fill a substantial am't of GBs but you can always transfer them to desktop's hard drive or cloud on-the-go(also OTG dongle with sd) so you always have room on internal storage. It's important to have high quality, 'speedy' SD in the phone for transferring large files like 4k videos - slow 'writes' may produce errors. I picked SanDisk Extreme for my phone a few days ago, 128GB = $28, it was 'on sale'.
Well, it's a good thing to have SD slot, no luck with that on Pixels or OnePlus. It's a great utility but as far as calling it a benefit, it's not. It used to be though, I personally go back as far as a Moto Defy gee, that thing had less then 1GB RAM and 4GB internal, but there was microSD slot for up to 32GB. Rooting back then, was a necessity and the greatest thing next to a sliced bread, and still some telcoms considered rooting as somewhat illicit activity.
I don't care about rooting anymore, what for? Some bloats can be disabled, but in general the phones are getting closer and closer to perfection with each passing year.

Greetings all.
After much thought, I opted for a Magician (yet to arrive). The next step is purchase as large an SD card that my pocket can afford, and it is here that some advice would be appreciated. A 1GB card can be purchased here in England for around £55 upwards. All well and good. However, how do these budget cards measure up in terms of speed?
A second thought which struck me was that the same card could double up to be used in my digital camera. Doubtless many of you also own a digital camera. I had already bought a 256MB card for the camera, but was always perplexed by the amount of time it took the camera to be ready for another shot (in highest quality mode). It is only now that I belatedly realise that the delay must have been due to a slow write speed.
So there you have it: I would prefer a high speed write card (4 megapixel photos) which can also be used to play mp3s on the Magician. Are there any prime 1GB candidates that spring to mind? I have yet to find a good website offering comparisons of a wide range of SD cards...
look at the program pocket mechianics it let you benchmark your system and compare to other pda's and or with many SD cards
doubt it's uptodate though
and at least for the xda2 and many other pda's it's the interface which is bottleneck not the sd cards
sd card speed seem to matter the most when you are using usb2 sd card readers
I'll take a look at pocket mechanics to benchmark my existing card. What about for choosing a new and, as yet, unacquired card? Are there any recommendations?
I have heard good things about the SanDisk Ultra II range. Unfortunately, the 2GB version cannot be bought for less than ~£180 here in England. Are these cheaper in the States?
Since I may get an HTC Desire HD to replace my slightly ageing iPhone 3GS, I'll be needing at least a 16GB microSD to store my stuff on.
I was looking through Amazon and found a 16GB SanDisk one for £22, but it's only class 2 which I understand is pretty crap, right? I've had experience with bad microSDs and it wasn't pleasant (be very wary of Nokia branded cards).
What's the minimum class I should get for a decent experience and so I can record decent video?
Class 4 is ok, class 6 is better, but i think that there is no need for faster than class 4.
I had 8gb class 4 kingstone on my HD2 and i had none problem or lag with anything. Class 4 is double speed than class2.
Ill go for 16gb class 4
OK, thanks
One more question: is there a way to encrypt the contents of the card?
Not that I know off and still be able to use with the phone vi think with htc's new thing you can wipe it remotkey also if it gets stolen
How about encrypting the phone itself then? That's where all my emails etc will be anyway, presumably.
Does the remote wipe include the microSD though? I'm not sure if HTC has confirmed it does.
I believe the D'HD should have enough phone RAM that you can keep sensitive material like emails off the SD. In which remote wipe should be sufficiently safe. The current weakness though is that the unit will not self format after say ten failed screen lock attempts. A thief can literally sit there tapping away until entry. Surprised such a feature hasn't creeped into the ROMs yet.

I'm planning to flash some unofficial ROMs to it anyway (that's where the fun is in an OS like Android anyway ), so d'ya think such a feature can be implemented in one of those?
And do you ever think that Android will get "on-the-fly" content encryption like iPhones and BlackBerries?
If you don't use Apps2SD there is shouldn't be any need for faster than class 4 I think.
Watching p0rn generally doesn't need much speed.

I was thinking more along the lines of recording the video, I remember reading somewhere that to record 720p at a decent frame rate you needed a high class.
If HTC do it right, with the help of a intermediate buffer, into RAM or even internal memory disk and after writing to the sdcard, there's no need for a class 4 or 6 card. A class 2 will suffice
We are talking almost of a computer not a digital camera or a digital recorder that usually don't have this amount of RAM or internal memory
Correct...
I have been saying this in other topics.
The later phones with large storage areas write their camera data first to the internal memory.
As such you can happily get away with a Class 2.
It's only when you are transfering data between the phone & a PC over USB where you will notice any speed differences.
OK, thanks
I also found out that there's an Android app called MyStash which will encrypt individual files, could come in handy. I'd still prefer on-the-fly encryption, but hey.

The DHD has enough horsepower to run on-the-fly encryption.
You can achieve this quite easily:
What you need to do, is basically build static copies of lvm, device-mapper and cryptsetup.
Add vgchange -ay, and cryptsetup luksOpen to initrd just before mount.
An easy way to realise key reading is to save your key on your microsd card (this of course implies that your sdcard is mounted earlier), and make cryptsetup read from it:
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/your_vol/your_lab some_id < /mnt/sdcard/my_key.txt
it only makes sense to encrypt /data/data, /data/misc and /data/system, of course.
You can always encrypt the whole /data if you want.
The only problem would be to fit the static binaries into your initrd (you can build some of them with busybox and integrate it).
That's it.
I have been thinking about encrypted aufs for a while, but since my only device is the "old" Hero, I couldn't bring that plan to execution yet.

But then, I have seen several threads with people complaining about the low 720p video recording fps they had with their Desire. Replacing the SD card for a faster one improved their fps.
A faster SD card was the difference between bad 720p video performance and acceptable performance.

The reason they would complain is because the Desire has very little internal storage for buffering compared to the likes of the DHD & Galaxy S.
On these devices it does not matter what class rating you use.... the video file is first written to internal memory storage before being transferred to microsd.

Are you sure? As far as I know, the Desire should have more ram with 576Mb, and the Galaxy S 512Mb. (DHD of course has 768Mb).
The Galaxy also has a 8Gb / 16Gb internal SD card. But here we would again be comparing SD card speeds...
Go for class4 too be sure and ready for perfect recording then

There's no crossing of swords at all buddy. Just some nice sharing of different points of views and experiences; for our own benefits of us all
Whatever the truth is...i'll buy class4 and everybody happy
What Micro SD should I get.
1. A smaller but faster Micro SD (64 GB 80MB/s)
2. Bigger but slower (128GB 48MB) Class10
Do you you notice the speed difference between 48 and 80 MB/s. Make a difference on my DSLR, but not sure if the Shield will take advantage of the speed.
I guess it depends on what you will mainly be using it for. I have an old class 10 64gb card that still works sufficiently even for running games directly from it.
I believe the shield's SD slot is pretty high quality so I would imagine it can use the faster speed cards.. but most of us are gonna be looking for more space for games considering games like HL2 take around 2gb or more.
TLDR: get the 128gb imo.

Personally I was in the same situation I to have a DSLR and I went for the speed 64GB
I'm using a class 10 32gb card and I have all my games on it using folder mount and I do not notice any lag or slow loading of games. I think the only time you would want anything faster is if you record a lot of videos. Otherwise I don't think it's necessary.

Same type of card for me as well. I think mine is about a 35mb/s speed. Plenty fast enough for offloading game assets from what I've experienced to date.
I am dont sure, I have sandisk ultra 64gb (30mb/s) and pny (64gb) 90mb/s elite performance, I dont feel tangible improvements in much extend. The only time i really did feel the difference was when ripped some 4k movies from youtube... and some pdf's over 200 pages in size.:silly:
I ordered a 128GB (New version) ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M562LF4/ )
And it will be here tonight. I don't have my shield tablet yet. I managed to snag one from the official amazon shipment that sold out in a matter of minutes. Which should be here on Friday or Monday.
I do have a Verizon HTC One Max as my daily driver. I do understand it's a different device. But I will do some tests on the HTC and the exact same tests on the Shield Tablet when it arrives.
I'm new to testing SD cards. So if people could make a list of what tests they'd like me to run I would be happy to run them.

i don't have one yet, but i would put all my games on internal if i had space , i mean only games ! and than few apps and other stuff on sd card if you don't have space a better sdcard as i know only reduces loading times which can make your gallery lag if its slow ! (when you start it, it reads pictures from sd card, even if you don't have pictures there it will check there as i know)
I currently have a 64 GB S6, and I'm thinking of upgrading to a 32 GB S7 with an 128 GB SD card. (I can upgrade through work and sell my S6, so I'll even come out ahead.)
I know that access to the 128 GB SD card is slower than to internal storage, but how much exactly? Would that affect my user experience at all? Would I notice if files are read from, or written to, the SD card on the S7 compared to the internal storage on my current S6?
Any recommendations for specific SD card to put in the S7?
Thanks!

Fastest card you can get would be the Samsung Pro Plus.
And they're priced accordingly, too: $150 for 95 Mb/x, 128 GB on Amazon. Would an 80 Mb/s EVO+ (at about $60 less than half) make a lot of difference in user experience?
(By the way, I'm not a gamer at all, so I doubt I'll have games or other very large apps on the SD card, just media such as photos, music, etc.)

I paid $93 for the 128GB Pro Plus direct from Samsung. I'd say at that price its better to skip the Evo altogether. As for speed the Evo will probably do what you want. I was using a Toshiba class 10 for the past year and a half and had zero speed issues but wanted to jump to the Pro Plus for the extra capacity and to have the speed for HD recording.
I use the Sandisk 128GB 80MB/s without any problem at all, came from S6 64GB, have not noticed any major difference, it works good enough.

@[email protected], since you already did what I'm considering doing, how's the upgrade from S6 to S7 been for you? Are you liking it? Something you'd recommend? How's the S7 camera holding up compared to the S6? (I know the reviews are generally very favorable, but it's always good to get the opinion of someone who's actually made the jump.)

@dutch_in_seattle
hmm, for me I really wanted IP68 and microSD, so it was worth the upgrade, bu also the better battery life and better camera, I love the instant focus... so I would say it was worth the jump, but bare in mind I do get my phone through work so I don't pay for them.
Paid 39$ at best buy on a price match for a 64gb pro plus Samsung
More than read speed for specs on a card.
Hi, I'm about to get this phone (hopefully without factory defects) and I was getting the usual stuff (case, glass, etc...) when I stumbled with the purchase of an SD card to expand the memory (I'll go with 128 gb I don't think I'll need more). There are pretty sick offers on Amazon but lots of reviews reveal that the card is either counterfeit or for some reason it doesn't perform as it says.
Do you think buying in person at Best Buy/Walmart is more reliable (even if I have to pay a bit more)? What SD card are you using that gives you satisfactory results?
Thanks for reading.

Well, I may be wrong, but the max size that RN6P supports is 128GB, you couldn't use a bigger one if you want. I'm currently using a Samsung EVO 32GB that I bought 3 years ago. It's good, I use it to store my photos and videos, also have my ROMs to play on emulator. I have no problems recording 1080p videos.
Nowadays you'll probably find better sdcard rated for 4K videos, but the 1080p ones have pretty good price, they have generally 80-100MB/s transfering speed. Anyway you must look for class 10 or better sdcards if you want a good one.
