Help with Substratum please? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hi,
Really frustrated trying to make Substratum and Swift Black to theme my system and apps. Running Resurrection ReMix Pie on G930F with (verified) root. Tried Swift Black, Nano, Blue Dragoon and several others, using different options in choice of Android....NOTHING works. I've used Swift Black several times over so am familiar with cleaning, building, enabling, rebooting... But admit this time I'm stuck.
Any help will be very gratefully received.
Logcat link below (apologies if this doesn't work, I've always been able to solve before so never uploaded link before.
Many thanks in advance.

Swift dark with Substratum works like a charm
Sent from my SM-G960F using XDA-Developers Legacy app

Hi, your reply is honestly appreciated, but 'dark' is not what I'm after. I will use it if I can't solve this, thank you, but you know what that say... Once you go black...... ??

According to your log you are trying to install a android 8.1 theme on android 9. I use swift minimal for 3rd party apps. For system theme i use night mode ( there is a qs tile for it) but i have the s9 so dont know if it is available in a custom rom

Ugh! How dumb am I?! Thanks for that. As stupid as I feel, it's a lesson learned - and I don't know enough to interpret the logcat. Much appreciated ??

Replacing the phone app has nothing to do with FreedomOS. The Google phone app which is what was discussed with Aroma in the same sentence. OpenGAPPS has an Aroma installer available, and within that is the Google Dialer.

I'm well aware of that, it's a side point to what's required to use custom apps like Google dialer. Is there a return to stock guide?

Sorry about that. I probably came across weird there. As far as a return to stock guide, do you want, A. to return to stock with an unlocked bootloader and TWRP with root / no root or B. completely stock with the stock OnePlus recovery, OOS 3.2.2 and locked bootloader? If you want choice A I think there's a guide somewhere in XDA and also the OnePlus forums. If you want choice B I wrote up a guide for it. Here's the link for choice B:

I am also interested in using google phone app. Couldn't install it from google play. I have oxygen os Lite custom rom. I will give it a try for installing it from aroma gapps.

Worked for me! Finally I can block numbers now. The OOS dialler was so poor
Thanks
I mounted system 1st if that helps error 64. I didn't get any errors or fc's

thanks for the link, I'd seen the full guide to unlock but hadn't seen one to go back to stock yet until you linked it here. I may do this when I have a bit of time.
unrelated, are you running just stock OOS w/ root or a specific rom? what are your thoughts on the ROMs available so far?

Right now currently I'm running stock OOS 3.2.2 with root and XPosed. This thing is a beast on the stock rom! The last couple of days were spent trying 3 different roms.
The official CM13 nightlies are pretty good and stable, but are subject to the standard nightly quirk of suddenly stopping working due to the fact that they're nightlies.
I also tried the official Resurrection Remix 5.7.2 "stable" rom. That was also pretty good but is based on the CM13 nightlies so it has the same quirks. If you try this make sure you read the OP first as there are multiple versions of this rom and it can get confusing pretty quick.
The other one I tried was the unofficial Dirty Unicorns 10.4. It worked fine except that it constantly had issues with Google sync. I tried adding, deleting and re-adding my account to no avail. It would only partially sync. That was a dealbreaker.
I tried FreedomOS 1.3.1 twice yesterday but the installer is messed up and doesn't install the apps you choose, otherwise it works. If you want that one I recommend watching the thread for an update before you go flash it.
Also forgot to mention on CM13 and Resurrection Remix there is a notification bug far worse than the OOS one. You can receive the first notification with sound, the rest don't sound off. It has been reported to the devs. All of the devs on these roms are cool and work hard to make them pretty bug free.
The rest of the roms on there I haven't looked at. Most of the rest of them are similar in features to the above ones. I was going to try Slim6 but it's in alpha and as far as I know still doesn't have DASH charge capabilities. Roms that are in Alpha are a big no no on my daily driver.
I hope I've been of some help!

thanks man, this is all pretty helpful. coming from the N5X I'd been mostly looking at freedom OS since i'd heard about the issues on other roms (mostly the photo quality stuff, but that notification issue would annoy me quite a bit) and the stock N5X android M has little customization.
That being said, in this case since OOS is great and customizeable as is I may just do the same as you. Most of the removed system apps on freedomOS don't have any effect being present, I don't mind not having layers, and i can make most of the remaining mods myself.
What xposed apps do you use if you don't mind me asking?

Don't mind at all. Here's what I have at the moment:
AdBlocker <-- blocks ads in free apps, works great and better than MinMinGuard!
FingerprintEnabler <-- Removes the Android 6.0.1 restriction on using a secondary unlock with every reboot, just lets me use the fingerprint all the time.
Hide VoLTE Icon <-- A beautiful mod. Removes the ugly VoLTE icon on 3.2.1 and higher.
Lockscreen Album Art Remover (not sure if this is working properly or not)
RootCloak (so I can use my banking app)
YouTube AdAway <-- Removes the ads in YouTube videos. I tried it on one video and it seems to work nicely.
I'm still looking at some others. But for now this is functional. I'm also using AdAway downloaded from F-Droid (an open source app installer for Android) to block ads elsewhere.

i've seen doze issues myself on my OP3 as well (pandora stop playing, and email/message notifications are delayed), so i get what you mean. I do use greenify's aggressive doze with Doze-on-the-Go enabled via ADB though.
I just get annoyed by google play services wakelocks (and i don't even have google now or location history enabled)

Layers themes support?

I could be wrong but is Layers an Xposed module? if so does that means they won't work on the pixel? i was hoping to change the theme of my phone up entirely with a single app but it seems like there's no way to do this yet.
It's not associated with Xposed. Layers has actually been replaced with Substratum. I'm pretty sure it's (partially) compatible with 7.1. Have a look at the pinned post in the G+ community:

You are required to have root for this to work.
Install Substratum app from play store
Install either https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brit.swiftdark.substratum or a swift black theme (same dev)
Go into substratum and ignore the warnings. Select 7.1+ and install all or selected app themes.
It works great. I've ran into only a few things that you can't read (white on white) but it's rare and the app updates quite a bit.
As far as I know, these are the only 2 themes that work.

yeah and both have 7.1.1. support lol. I do wish they'd make more themes that support 7.1 tho because only have 2 choices that are both dark themed and both with the EXACT same colors is just.........blah.

[OLD] Android Oreo Pixel Mod

UPDATE FOUND HERE https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/themes-apps/zip-android-oreo-pixel-mod-5x-t3686925
-TO-DO LIST--Navigation Bar Animation
-Substratum Compatibility
-Original Accent Color Mod (Should help with Substratum Compatibility)
-Lowered DPI Navigation Bar Mod
-Black Android Oreo Boot Animation (Currently using stock Android Oreo Boot Animation)
-Integration Boot Sound (Have to find out where it moved to. Sound isn't in the same spot as it was in Nougat)
-Converting to Aroma Installer for Customized Features
-Possibly developing app to better integrate Pixel Mods with Android Oreo's native theme support
-The Pixels (Pixel & Pixel XL) themselves actually use (in a sense) a Pixel Mod. As of Android O (beginning in the previews) the Pixels have basically the exact same setup as the 6P and 5X. However, in the vendor partition they have a Pixel Theme (called Pixel.apk). This actually visible in the apps list. If you have a Pixel on Android Oreo. Go to your installed apps and view system apps. Look for Pixel.apk. That is the pixel theme, much like Substratum Themes. Now the Pixels basically use an overlay (using Android Oreo's native theme support). The 6P has the exact same compatibility. However, installation is a bit complicated. If I or someone else could develop an app to place the files+folders in the Vendor folder and run the ADB commands, it would make Pixel Mod's much less complicated and allow complete substratum compatibility.
CHANGELOGPrevious Version: O-DP4 Mod
Current Version: Oreo V1
-Complete Rebuild from Android Oreo
-Updated all apps from Android Oreo OPR6
-Replaced Blacked Out Pixel Boot Animation with Stock Android Oreo Boot Animation
Never mind. Figured it out. Thanks for the mod!
Works flawlessly!! Thank you very much!!

So, You've seen the Pixel. It's Google's take on a stock Android flagship. While Google added exclusive features to the Pixels, that doesn't mean that all devices can have them. This guide will show you how to give your Moto G4 Plus a Pixel feel. Before we start, this guide will require an unlocked bootloader and TWRP. If you're not comfortable with that, this isn't the tutorial for you. You don't need root for this, but it will make this tutorial easier.
What we're going to do
This is a list of what we're going to do.
Install AOSP 8.1
Add the Pixel 2 sounds
Get the Pixel boot animation and boot logo
Install some Pixel apps (Such as the launcher and camera)
Add the blue accent color and navigation bar using Substratum
Get the Google Sans font on the lock screen and other parts of the system
Getting started
Since the Pixel is on the latest version of Android (8.1.0) and the G4 Plus is only on Nougat, we'll need to flash a ROM. Now, there is currently only one 8.1.0 ROM which is AOSP built by Dreamstar. This ROM is perfect since it is pure stock Android with no extra features. Download the ROM here. Once you've set up to ROM, you can optionally set the DPI to 411 to match the Pixel. (Enable developer options and find the Smallest width option)
The flashing
Here's the fun part. We're going to do the heavy lifting now so we won't have to worry about it later. Make sure to create a backup before flashing any of these mods. We'll first want to flash the Pixel 2 sounds. You can find the flashable zip here. Once you flash that, you'll have the Pixel 2 sounds! Now, we'll want to get the Pixel 2 boot animation and boot logo. You can get the boot animation here and the boot logo here. (Make sure to download the white boot animation if you're going to install the boot logo.)
Getting the apps
Alright, the apps. Don't worry, you don't need that many. You're probably going to want to get the Pixel 2 launcher, which can be downloaded here. You'll also want to install the Pixel 2 wallpapers which can be downloaded here. If you want the Pixel 2 navigation bar and accent color, you need Substratum and Andromeda, which can be found on the Play Store. (Andromeda does cost money, but it's worth it.) Lastly, you'll want the Google Camera app, which can be downloaded here. (The camera app may not work 100% of the time since it's meant for Google devices only)
Theming
Alright, we're almost done. You're going to need Andromeda and Substratum, plus a root browser (or use TWRP's inbuilt file browser, which is what I did). You're going to need two themes, [Substratum] Pixel Theme for the navigation bar, and [Substratum] Always On Enabler, for the blue accent color. (Do note that [Substratum] Always On Enabler is unreleased, so it may be hard to find.) For [Substratum] Always On Enabler, enable the Android System overlay, which should be the only one. For [Substratum] Pixel Theme, enable System UI, and set the navbar style to either Pixel or Filled. Alright! Now you got the navigation bar and the blue accent color, but we're still not done yet... This is when you're going to need to use a root browser or TWRP's file browser for this step. (If you're going to use TWRP, make sure to mount the system.) You'll first want to download this file, extract it, and move the two folders (etc and fonts) into the /system folder. Next, you'll want to download this file and put it into /system/vendor/overlay by using TWRP or a root browser. Reboot and you should have Google Sans as your lock screen clock font and some settings titles.
Be happy
Well, you don't have to be happy, but you probably will be because you just transformed you G4 Plus into a Pixel! Woohoo! If this tutorial helped you out, leave a thanks! :good: It'll make me feel good about this post. I hope this post wasn't too difficult to understand and that you got your device to look like a Pixel.

NOTE: Currently Settings is not themed, and as for Pie , if some option gives error please select one with "For Miui" in name.
Also this theme gives a lot of freedom, so choose multiple Time an option for same Package.
For example, under Android, you choose accent, gradient accent, roudness, ...
Good theming :good:

The freedom of the Custom Roms + MIUI theme.. GREAT idea buddy!
Now it's time to wait for the new android P multitasking apps that's similar to iPhone aswell as MIUI.. I consider the multiasking on MIUI 10 just perfect.
Awesome Work buddy!!
great job dude...
I am new in using substratum and I don't know how to change colours, tiles and icons. I managed to change the icons and tiles somehow but I can't get a black background. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi background is overlay on android, 2nd choice. You can choose black
You need 2 reboots. One after build&update, one after activate overlay.

It worked! Thanks.
Just in case steps I did:
1 removed all applied layers
2 removed theme itself
3 reboot
4 followed original guide

Ok thanks for feedback. I made this one quickly, will provide better update beginning of week. Just Seen that a lot of icons are not as expected.
Some are not centered on qs form.
Will also provide better guide.
For example its better to have a second accent contrasting with primary as these are mixed for example in volume panel.
If tint of text is shocking, better use white or black text depending on BG color of course.
i cant run on xiaomi.eu. 8.8.16
