Old Oreo Recents Panel workaround - Samsung Galaxy S8 Themes, Apps, and Mods

U must not use Gestures navigation. Use buttons. U should also use a custom launcher.
Freeze/Disable Samsung Experience Home using Titanium backup or whatever app to disable it.
Recents will become like pre-One ui although a bit uglier since it looks zoomed-in.
To go back, close any apps in the Recents menu & enable Samsung Experience Home.

How to show recent apps with swiping bottom->up in kitkat?

To see the list of recently called (active) apps - I have to long-press "Menu" button, which is not very comfortable. How to make it work with swiping on screen upward? Are there any configuration settings for that in kitkat?

If you are rooted you can try with xposed framework and gravity box or some other modules that allow you to change your navbar settings or your hard keys configuration.

I do have root, but xposed - or rather its modules, but it's almost the same - does not work at my phone (Alcatel Idol X+).

You can have this gesture, but not while using an app. That's because this would interfere with scrolling or possible app gestures.
I have the exact gesture set to open recent apps with Nova Launcher.
Install Nova launcher, go to Nova settings, gestures and buttons and set the swipe up gesture to open Recent Apps.
This will work when you are on one of your home screens, but not in apps, like I said.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Hi, thanks. The matter is that I use the launcher, which I don't wish to change. I've been using it for a while and I find it the most suitable for me. It's Launcher Pro. Mostly because it allows to make a bottom bar of shortcuts scrollable, fitting there more than 4-5 icons. Also it's quite fast and does not drain battery.

Nova launcher does this as well. It's incredibly light and fast. Very customizable. Give it a shot. You might like it.
It's considered by many the best android launcher.
I have the paid version and nova launcher is always my first installed app after flashing any rom.
To activate the dock (bottom bar) pages, go to nova settings, dock, dock pages. You can also set the number of dock icons and a lot of other stuff actually
Cheers

Thanks, the launcher itself is good, but as to swiping action - it seems does not solve my problem. The swiping works if it happens on blank zone. On my Meizu firmware, when I, for instance, had some PDF opened full-screen - I could swipe from bottom of screen or side - if being in landscape orientation - and recent apps bar appeared, so I could call dictionary or encyclopaedia, whatever, and the same way back. It was fast and comfortable. Here it does not work...

Yep. Like I said, it only works from one of the home screens. Don't know what else to suggest unfortunately

In case someone is interested, more or less normal way to do it - "All in one gesture" application. It adds a small "hot spot" zone to drag from.

bixby icon / shortcut

is there a way of having an icon / shortcut for bixby....i have disabled the side button....but i'd like to have an icon somewhere to go in and play with it every now and then.
also this could be useful on a custom rom with bixby where the hardware just doesnt have the button on the side like on the S6 or the S7 that got the android 7 and a ported s8/note8 rom
Yes you can use a app to have a activities shortcut /widget. Nova launcher as the ability to do this built into it.
Also many apps on the Playstore do the same example: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ss.moreshortcuts. Just place shortcut on your home screen and choose your activity ie; Bixby Home .
You can also use gesture apps to do the same thing again Nova Launcher also as this built in.

[Guide]It's Time For Gesture Navigation Android

Good day everyone, so for years i wished for Android to adopt gesture navigation because it's so intuitive and natural. At the beginning it might require some effort to learn how to navigate but later on it becomes effortless it's like walking so to speak.
Anyway i wanted to create this Not Noob friendly :crying: tutorial for others who are interested in having gesture navigation replace the conventional old way but don't know where to begin or start and don't want to use custom roms. What i will be showing are the steps to how to remove the navigation bar using available apps and this method works on all Android rom versions.
Requirements
*Knowledge of how to root, install TWRP and flash zips.
*Rooted device.
Apps
*Gesture navigation app (Edge Gestures(No Root Required, Paid App), GMD Gesture Control(Root Required, Paid App), Swipe Navigation(Root Required, Free/Paid App) or any other gesture navigation app you like .
*GravityBox
*Substratum if you want to theme your rom.
Instructions
1- Install any Gesture Navigation app you like and setup the gestures you like for navigation on that app.
2- Install GravityBox we are going to need it to "hide/disable" the navigation bar. In GravityBox go to the "Navigation bar tweeks" section then under Dimentions heading move all the sliders to 0% and reboot the device for the affects to apply.
Now some of you will ask why not disable the navigation bar through GravityBox itself or from the build.prop using a string of command?, well disabling it will make "Tap On Now" feature not work any more that's why it's better to reduce the navigation bar height to zero and have no compromises, at the same time using the conventional build.prop method doesn't work on devices with Android Oreo and don't support project Treble.
3. Hide the status bar on all apps or some apps depending on which apps that don't play well, this is also an alternative method to still use the stock navigation bar but hide it from all apps.
Video of my Setup
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFtzPU3IYvk&feature=youtu.be
-Apps used to achieve my setup
*GravityBox
*Substratum theme engine.
*GMD GestureControl ★ root
*Nova Launcher Prime
*[Substratum] Greyce
*Popup Widget 3
*Wallpaper
*Xposed
*NeoPowerMenu
*Rugos Premium - Icon Pack
*Athanotify - prayer times
*Tiles
P.S: All thanks go to the developers of these wonderful apps. :good:
If I may an alternative is also pie control and gesture app like LMT which is on XDA too.
Getting rid of navigation bar is so pleasant agent you get used to it.

I love LMT i have been using it for years now, it and GMD i have been switching between the 2 back and forth i even have videos highlighting it.
But after using both apps i give the edge to GMD and apps like it because it's a 1 step action process compared to LMT pie 2 step process(swipe edge "step 1" + action click "step 2" depending on its position left, center, right) which is not so different from having the navigation bar hidden and then swiping from the bottom for it to pop up the difference though is that LMT is faster and has more flexibility and options.
The reason i didn't mention LMT is because i want a 1 action step "1 swipe only anywhere for action execution" which is easier and more intuitive in my opinion after some learning of course, another reason which is the point of this thread is a shout out to Google to head into this direction which i believe they will soon. Luckily for us Apple and OnePlus are heading the trend.
Anyway by using GravityBox you can enjoy "Pie Controls" which is basically LMT but with a different name.
Having said all that, LMT Launcher is my second choice salute:victory: to the app developer and thanks to you for mentioning it.
My favourite and current gesture setup without root.

Android 10 Launcher

So it took me a while to get used to Android 10 but i quite like the gestures now like the swipe in from the side for back and swipe up anywhere on home screen for the apps, but I dont like......
1) the google search bar - want to remove it
2) the date & temperature- want to remove it
3) When the keyboard is visible the height of the bar at the bottom of the screen for the 3 control buttons is massive, even when I change to gestures and just get a line there is still this huge empty space
I have tried nova and evie and I do like all the customisations, reminds me of the custom rom i had on my old phones, but I found I couldnt do everything I wanted.
If i get nova prime can I do everything I want?
Thanks

Launchers with MiUI-style grid recents screen?

Hi. I bought an Xperia and I really miss the grid recents screen from MiUI, the stock Android one is unusable to me, to the point that I'm thinking of a refund to buy another Xiaomi.
Are there any good launchers that feature a grid layout for the recents screen?
(I know I'd have to root and use Quickswitch for it to work. That's why I'm asking in advance.)
Check https://github.com/reiryuki/Miui-Home-Magisk-Module
Bugs
Recents provider can't kill recents apps
Open-close apps animation doesn't show-up
Navbar gestures while using full screen swipe gestures ( doesn't support Android Pie gestures)
hi did you ever find a solution? i can't use the recents screen on android 13 where i have to spent ages swiping through all the recents apps (and still not find it) and it much quicker for me to go to the apps drawer search the app name and re launch it. i know it sounds silly but i really really miss the older style with a grid of thumbnails to switch between apps must be my age. I was allready happy te learn it was called the recents screen
