Mms on vzw???? - Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 Questions & Answers

I hear conflicting reports of if mms works properly on vzw??? I don't want to use vzw message app. Would appreciate any info.

If you don't use the Messages+ app from VZW, images, gifs, videos will be limited to 30kb. No matter what you change. MMS does NOT work by default on VZW. You have two options, install TWRP and then modify the apns-conf.xml file to add a corrected APN (which has not been working for me since I updated to the latest global build). OR, insert a T-mobile or other carrier SIM that does not block adding APNs, with the VZW sim out, add an APN manually with all the correct information, pull the other SIM and insert your VZW sim and then manually select that APN. If you need settings, I can post what I'm using. I have the corrected APN entered using a T-Mobile SIM that I was testing at work, but I use Messages+ so that I can actually send and received videos, GIFs, pictures, etc.
I do not know if VZW restricts the MMS media size to 30kb if you flash one of the open source builds here (like Pixel Experience). I would bet that they will because they don't have this model in their list of approved devices.

Thanks...so if I edit the apn with a tmo sim, then pop my vzw sim, mms sending and receiving should be ok?

You will want to create a new APN, make sure MNC and other stuff (the carrier identifiers are changed to match VZW instead of TMO which they will default to since you will have a TMO sim). Then pull the TMO sim, put the VZW sim back in and your custom APN should be in the list of APNs. Select that APN and you should be golden. This will not make you able to send more than 30kb. I found some old patched files that supposedly worked around this, but I haven't had a chance to dissect them yet to see what was changed (they are from like MIUI 4). If I find a way to fix that, I'll be sure to share here, just like the TWRP i'm working on and the magisk hw origin bypass module.

Thanks. Does it survive a reboot?

Yes, also, you didn't ask this, but you need this: dial *#*#VOLTE#*#* - this will disable the VOLTE Carrier check. This causes the device to disconnect sometimes depending on where you are on the network. You can leave the VOLTE turned on in the carrier settings in the settings menu, but that check causes the phone to drop connection sometimes.
Edit: Just to clarify, I got a couple PMs about this. I have seen the network disconnect when on network extender hardware with the VOLTE carrier check enabled. Turning off the check and turning VOLTE in the settings menu seems to stop those problems. There is no issue with this device and VOLTE on Verizon, just some kind of problem with the VOLTE carrier check part. This happens on the Mi Mix 2s as well.

I don't really know anything about APN settings, any idea if these would work?

No, those are wrong. The MCC and MNC are wrong. Below is what I am using:

Thank you so much!

The latest miui sw, MMS works out of the box for vzw. No issues here.

Can you send 30kb+ mms?

Quick thought, if I were to set the phone up without ever putting any SIM in it, would I be able to add the APN and then pop my VZW SIM in and skip the step of using a T-mobile SIM?

Could that be due to the fact you're on Chinese hardware? I am on global hardware + global ROM 10.2.2 and was able to get to the APN settings as well as add/edit them with a VZW SIM inserted.

My MMS worked out of the box but I still had the 30 kb limit. I'm not sure why it works but I have a way around the limit, I had the same issue on my unlocked LG V30 actually. I have used Textra as my default texting app for a long time with my unlocked and rooted LG V30 and one of their recent updates removed custom APN functionality. I emailed the dev team and they gave me a link to the last stable build that included manual APN switching (3.50) and I am able to send/receive MMS messages well over 30kb after using that version and changing the following settings in Textra (as long as the app isn't updated, recommend turning Auto-update off in the Play Store):
Settings > MMS > Carrier Send Limit > Carrier has no limitSettings > MMS > MMS Behavior > Legacy
It's not perfect; sometimes it randomly says it can't receive MMS and I have to toggle Legacy > System in the MMS Behavior option to get it to work again. But I tested it this morning and have sent and received 200kb+ pictures without any degradation. Any idea why Textra's automatic APN settings for Verizon circumvent this restriction? Or am I missing something else that allows this to work?
The link for Textra 3.50 if anyone wants to use this fix: Textra 3.50 APK

I think the baked in limit is an MIUI thing. I need to find a copy of the old patch file to fix this problem and try to figure out what was changed to fix it. Might look into that this weekend if I have time. In-laws are here though, so probably unlikely.

These are the settings I have currently working with 30+kb MMS files.
Textra 3.50 apk installed and set as default texting app
Settings > MMS > Carrier Send Limit > Carrier has no limit
Settings > MMS > MMS Behavior - Legacy
Custom APN (in attached screenshots) added and selected
If you can figure out what in MIUI causes this that would be awesome so I don't have to use an old version of Textra, but this works in the meantime for anyone who wants it. I don't have much experience looking through system files but if you want some help getting to the bottom of this I'd be happy to try.

Not sure if the third picture posted or not, appears broken on my end. Here's a re-upload

[Q] Add APN After 4.4.3 Update

Hi everyone. M8 Verizon.
I'm on stock rooted on 4.4.3 S-Off. I noticed with this update they removed the ability to add APNs in addition to the Verizon one .
I travel to the middle east and usually swap SIM cards, selecting the corresponding APN, and it worked fine while on 4.4.2. On 4.4.3 I can edit the Verizon Apn to put the Vodafone apn for data to work, however the MMS part is blocked, and it won't let me enter anything.
Once I re-insert the Verizon APN I have to say Restore defaults for the Verizon APN to populate.
My question is, how can I get the feature back to add additional APNs? I use to be able to toggle through several.
* If you look at the attachment, where it says Reset to Default, there used to be a feature that Said "Add APN"
Thanks!

i found one way to make them work, one bad thing it's that if you restart the phone you will have to do it again, but at least it's working again.
select the apn from verizon, the only field we can modify it's the APN
then enter the info from your carrier, for example :
fast.t-mobile.com in the case of t-mobile
vzwinternet in the case of verizon
as we know that field changes with our carrier but they just were some apn's i found on internet.
then save the apn,it worked on my GSM carrier again with 4G LTE.
i hope you get data again, let me know.

[Q] MMS APN is fixed - any workaround??

Hi,
I recently bought a Verizon HTC One M8 - advertised as SIM free (which it seems to be) - for use with Vodafone in the UK (GSM). Everything is fine... except...
I can neither send nor receive MMS messages.
This is due, I think, to the MMS APN being fixed to a specific setting by Verizon. I have tried everything I can think of to remove this but with no success.
* Of course, I've tried adding the required APN using the normal phone UI.
* I've tried editing the '/system/etc/apns-conf.xml' file.
* I've used the APN backup and restore app to remove all APNs and then manually added the required APN.
* Other stuff too, but with no success at all.
Mobile data works with no problems but any MMS APN seems to be ignored and MMS messages are not possible.
It is quite possible that the MMS APN is only locked when NOT roaming. Presumably, when roaming, even a Verizon customer would need to be able to access a non Verizon specific APN for MMS messages. I am, however, mostly in the UK with a UK SIM and so am not roaming! Next time I am abroad, I will enter the appropriate APN for the signal provider and test if I can use MMS while roaming (although, as a rule, I never enable mobile data when roaming due to the ridiculous costs this can incur).
Is there a workaround for Verizon's seemingly hard coded MMS APN ???
Presumably, the information lies somewhere in the phone but I cannot find it anywhere. Is it actually hard coded into a Verizon specific app or lib? If so, could I replace the offending module with a non Verizon variant?
My phone is unlocked, s-off, rooted, superCID, etc., etc. but is running pretty well stock VZW software (Android V4.4.2) although I've changed a lot of the Verizon customised settings back to standard HTC. This was achieved by editing the various "default.xml" files in '/system/customize/ACC', 'CID' & 'MNS' folders.
I use the standard messaging app (not the Verizon one). I don't know if this is HTC specific or a default Android app.
Many thanks in advance for some useful advice!
Apns are not editable anymore they are chosen by the network apn you select. You must go here and add the carrier you have by name and reboot. Once you have done that your mms apn will match your carrier.
Settings, mobile data , network preferences, three dot menu and click add. Click add operator and add all of your carrier's listings. Once done reboot.

Sounds great but...
Whatever I do to my 'Network Preference List' is lost and reset to some default carriers on reboot.
I can add providers, remove providers, reorder the list etc. I can save the changes (at least close everything and reopen) and they are still there (MMS doesn't work still).
When I reboot, the list always comes back the same... about 15 entries, mostly European Vodafone, but unfortunately not Vodafone UK.
I tried restoring an old backup (made before I messed with any settings) and the same thing happens.
I will spend a little time investigating where this default list comes from and whether I can modify it (or disable the reset on each reboot).
Any more suggestions?

I did this on the post you told me dottat and I don't get any carries at all. The phone asks me to enter the MCNMNN number. When I do, and I exit those setings the phone does not seem to save them. I tried to reboot the phone after entering the settings and everything resets back to default.
I don't know if this helps but when I install the Verizon SIM all the carriers reappear, however when I install the T-Mobile SIM everything disappears.

Did you select it after adding it? The loaded list can only keep defaults until they are actually selected and activated.
Try using textra from the play store...you can set apn in the app
Not solved, but working so far
I am currently running CleanROM 3.0(VZW 4.4.4 stock+root-bloatware), S-OFF. My carrier is Claro Argentina, voice & text work flawless.
I tried everything on this and other posts, but I am unable to add or edit an existing APN, every menu option is grey shadeded, unavailable. I do have a "New Apn" option in GSM/UMTS preferences but only the APN field is editable and would not let me save any changes, as other fields are required to complete APN data. In Network preference list there are a lot of options which can be rearranged but not deleted nor added.
In the APN list I only had VZWInternet and on edit options only APN could be changed(every other option gray shaded, too). So I replaced existing APN with "igprs.claro.com.ar"(my APN in Argentina), then the APN name immediately changed to "Internet" and connected to 3G/H+.
Turned off/on and setup was kept and phone still connected.

APN auto-switching

Has anyone has this issue? I'm using a telus xt1032.
I have a tablet plan from telus, cheaper data and I NEVER make phone calls (use dialer) or sms. Telus doesn't care and will let you use this plan on phones, the only issue is you must change your apn from sp.telus.com to isp.telus.com or it'll be $1/meg.
By default when I put in the sim care it was set to sp.telus.com as to be expeced, there was also the isp apn already there I just needed to click on it to set it. I set it to isp.telus.com and rebooted, still set on isp.telus.com all good. The next day I got a sms from telus letting me know I went over $50 on my plan, shoot it flipped to sp.telus.com!!!
After fooling around it seems as though after flipping airplane mode on/off it'll go back to the default setting, arg. The two showing apns are uneditable, the fields are all grey. I added a new apn and hit save, but if you already have one with the exact same address it won't add.
Normally my solution would be to root, install apn backup/restore, move it to a system app, delete all apns, then create the new proper one. I'm sure that would work, but the freaking lollipop update is coming out and I wanna be stock stock stock. Now on my N5 when I got the lollipop ota /system had to be complete stock, they didn't just check the files they were patching it checks the md5 of the entire partition and just patches the whole thing at once. So even if I deleted apn backup/restore it wouldn't work because I would have deleted all the APNs. Moto may do it different, I'm not sure. I suppose another solution would be to install GPe which will most likely let me edit/delete the default apns, since I can on my stock N5.
Just rooted and delete the apns and setup the proper one. But now I want to convert to gpe complete stock. Having issues though, gpt.bin won't flash something something. Should I close this thread and start a new one?

Locked APN

Is there anyway to make the APN editable without rooting as I use a couple of banking apps that I can't do without ?
It was possible with my OnePlus 5 with Android 9.
What happens when you try to add an APN?
Give this thread from last year a look (another model, naturally, but, it may apply).

I slightly altered my T-Mobile APN for a 2nd APN (changed the APN Protocol & APN Roaming Protocol to IPv4/IPv6).
Ran a speed test & it works. Perhaps it's not enough of a change to the original APN, but, I was able to select it.
I did find that once it's saved, to select another APN, you have to tap directly on the corresponding dot for the selected APN to change. If you just tap on it w/o tapping the dot, it won't select & just stay on whatever you're currently using.

Do you have a carrier-locked version?
If so, I'm guessing that may be the issue, even though mine is a T-Mobile US carrier locked version. (still SIM Locked) & I can get a 2nd APN to select.
I don't have another carrier SIM Card to see if I'd have the same issue as you. Perhaps someone else will be able to help w/a 2nd SIM/APN.
No it's an unlocked OnePlus 8 bought from Amazon.
I believe though that carriers are requesting locked APNs or pushing them to the phone and is a problem since Android 10.
Another sim I tried from a different carrier is also locked.
Anyway your suggestions are appreciated.

Yeah, troubleshooting is difficult when neither the mfg or carrier(s) want to take ownership of the issue.
Since the phone is SIM Unlocked, I'd start with the carrier & see if they have to whitelist your device (by IMEI) or whatever means they require for BYOD. I'd grab the SIM Card serial number as well before you give 'em a call.

Sonim XP8 w/Android 10 apn issues/root

So for the long post but lots of information up front. I obtained an unlocked Verizon Sonim XP8 with Android 10 installed. It works with a Verizon sim as well as a FirstNet sim. I am trying to use a Visible sim in it. I've used this sim in an iPhone, iPad and Unihertz Atom without any issues as the latter 2 let me add the apn settings. The software on the XP8 is obviously from Verizon who locks the apn settings even though the phone is unlocked. The sim lets me select the Visible 4G network but puts in Verizon's apn settings instead of Visible and won't let me change them. I have tried various programs which fail to change the apn settings. One program let me add an apn but refused to save it saying my "user privileges" would not let me add an apn with the "dun" setting. I tried some one-click root programs (even though I didn't want to) which failed to root the device. There is no available dump for Android 10 to pull a boot.img from to modify. TWRP website shows no Sonim compatiblity and even when downloaded won't run on the phone so I cannot get the boot.img myself. I looked through this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/sonim-xp8-root.3851187/ Being a newbie, I think I need to use adb in order to pull the boot.img but am unsure where it is stored and where I am supposed to store the xml files that I create. If I can understand that process better and get the boot.img to root with Magisk, will this even solve my permissions problem with being able to add the apn settings? Is there an alternative or is the only way to solve this to flash the phone back to Android 8 with the stock images off this website to get rid of the Verizon problems? I'd really like to stay with Android 10 if at all possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
-Josh
Where did you get one with android 10? I have both the Verizon and ATT XP8s stuck on Android 8.1. I have had tickets open with Verizon for 2 months and they swear it is fully up to date with 8.1. It may actually be my APN configuration that is preventing the update.
I was able to get Visible working on my Verizon version by modifying just the apn name in the existing apn. I can't add new APNs on either ATT or VZW XP8s. Perhaps if you follow the other XP8 root thread you will see there is a method for rooting which gives you access to manually add APNs. I'm not sure if it works on Verizon model though...does anybody successfully have XP8 Verizon with Android 10 and root?

Where did you get one with android 10? I have both the Verizon and ATT XP8s stuck on Android 8.1. I have had tickets open with Verizon for 2 months and they swear it is fully up to date with 8.1. It may actually be my APN configuration that is preventing the update.
I was able to get Visible working on my Verizon version by modifying just the apn name in the existing apn. I can't add new APNs on either ATT or VZW XP8s. I used a friend's Verizon sim card in it and went to System->System updates->Check for new system updates and it upgraded itself to Android 10. What did you modify the apn name to in order to get it to work? I have 4 apn settings I was given for Visible. The apn settings in the phone however leave little room for modification.

Using my Visible SIM on my Verizon device, I have only 1 APN instead of 4. By changing just the APN NAME, (which is all I can change), I am able to get visible data working. No MMS/SMS/ADMIN APNs but full speed data.
My primary sim for this is a Verizon prepaid. Was your friends sim a verizon post-paid account? Also, do you have the appropriate 4 verizon APNs on your phone? Maybe the admin APN is required for the update. Any chance we could swap screenshots of our APN configurations?

The sim was a post-paid account. I don't have it in the phone right now. The only APN that shows up when I put the Visible sim in is named "Verizon" with an APN of "VZWINTERNET" MCC "311" MNC "480" APN type "default, dun, supl" APN protocol "IPv4/IPv6" APN roaming protocol "IPv4" I tried the root method in the thread I listed but when I type the command for the QSaharaServer it tells me the application is not executable even though I followed all the directions so I cannot even get the boot.img downloaded to begin the rooting process.

Just change APN name from VZWINTERNET to VSBLINTERNET.
unfortunately that didn't work for me. not sure if that's an android 10 difference or something else... i do notice that when the phone starts i get a 4GLTE symbol which promptly goes away.

Did the APN name save? If so try the following:
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Select Phone Information
Set Preferred Network type to "WCDMA Only"
Reboot and let it sit for 5 minutes without touching it to update it's settings.
It should automatically change but if not, Do it again and make sure Preferred Network Type is "LTE/CDMA/UMTS auto (prl)"
This got my VISIBLE sim on the right network along with the APN change.
a lot of the secret codes have gone away with the android 10 update hence the need to root. i am unable to change the network type through the typical menu and the dailing code does not bring anything up, just returns to a blank screen. The network is stuck on "LTE/UMTS/GSM" no matter what I do.
Were you able to root with android 10? I heard it hasnt been done as of yet due to the new android 10 features

Hello, can you backup rom android 10 to zip file, i can not update my xp8 OTA updae normally.
Thanks
So I had to get a ATT sim without service from ebay, stuck it in and instantly had a update i could do which brought me to the last update before android 10. I then had to do a complete reset before it would even say it had another update. That got me to android 10. then doing the time/date trick got me to the current security patch level.
Unfortunately it still blocks the second sim slot.
I appreciate the many work-arounds here and will look at getting a SIM from somewhere if needed, but is there not a more simple download / extract path? The unlocked XP8 I recently got is on 8.1.0 and would really like to get a tad more recent if possible. Many thanks in advance!
P.S. Got unlimited connectivity and a number from Mint, so at least a very functional device... have no need, so haven't tried 2nd SIM slot.
