Carrier switch issue - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue. In my Pixel 3, there are 2 SIMs. The eSIM used for Google Fi and a physical SIM used for RedPocket (on Verizon). The Verizon # is my main # currently, so I normally have Fi disabled (not the service itself but by keeping the Verizon sim as default in my phone). Today, I wanted to check and delete voice messages in my Fi #, so I switched Carrier to Fi in my phone. It seemingly switched just fine, and my About Phone section shows the Fi #. However, if I try to dial my voicemail or any other numbers, it goes straight to Verizon customer support. I'm not sure what's going on. I thought Pixel 3 was supposed to be able to switch between SIMs smoothly.

I think I know what's going on, I've seen this happening.
This problem seems to arise if you just switch to the Fi eSIM without letting the app know. There's stuff that needs to be updated in Google Fi's backend that goes beyond a SIM switch. What you want to do if you want to switch to Fi from physical SIM is go to the Fi app and tap on activate. This will do a proper switch and calls will go through normally. To go back to physical SIM you can just tap on it.

You were totally right. I just tested your theory and worked perfectly. It is so dumb for Google to make sim switch so painful. Defeats the purpose of having dual sim capability... Thanks for your help!

Project Fi: Tricks for visual voicemail AND wifi calling, Daydream

I've stumbled onto a couple of tricks using the OP6 on ProjectFi in the US and thought I'd share in case it helps anyone, or anyone smarter than me can take these "clues" and figure out a better solution.
I'm starting with the sim card I used to use in my Nexus 5x so the card is fully activated.
Visual Voicemail & Daydream
1. Install and run the ProjectFi app - It won't fully activate your service. It says "account access only"
2. Root your phone with magisk and download/enable the module "Daydream Enabler 2.5" - I guess this sort of "pixelizes" your phone. (I'm a mechanical engineer, not a dev, in case you can't tell.) I did this to get daydream working (it works) but I noticed it allowed me to also fully activate the Project Fi app (the app thinks it's a Pixel device) and visual voicemail started working! You can't leave your module enabled because it kills your video recorder, but visual voicemail persists! You just have to enable the module when you want to use Daydream. (Note - don't use a dark theme with visual voicemail, the text stays black so you see there is a voicemail but it's all black, you can't see the text.)
WiFi Switching
If you were paying attention you would have noticed wifi switching worked before you installed the project fi app. Now it's gone. To re-enable dial *#800# to open Log_Test. Tap enter to disregard the warning, then tap on OnePlusLogKit. Scroll down to function switch and tap it, then tick the box to enable VoWifi switch.
Then go into settings -> Wifi & Internet -> Sim & Network -> Sim 1 and make sure both the VoLTE and VoWifi switches are turned on.
Voila. You now have a OnePlus 6 on Project Fi with working visual voicemail and wifi switching, and daydream when you want it.

WiFi Switching
I knew the OP6 wouldn't switch to Sprint but I didn't realize when I bought the phone that the seamless wifi switching I enjoyed wouldn't work either. (I don't get a T-Mobile signal in my office so this is pretty important.) So even on wifi I don't get calls on my phone. I'll see them come though the hangouts website and chrome browser extension but not my phone.
UNLESS you wipe your phone and do not ever install the project fi app. Then wifi calling is an option in your sim settings and it works great! Unfortunately you can't enable visual voicemail as per above. Even if you uninstall the ProjectFi app, the damage is done. Once you install the ProjectFi app, the sim setting for WiFi calling is gone forever, even without fully activating the app with the Magisk module.
I'm leaving WiFi switching enabled because visual voicemail still comes through as a message in hangouts so it's a little kloogey but good enough.

Just curious, have you tried enabling the VoWIFI switch via the *#800# menu after you've enabled Visual Voicemail to get the switch back?

I tried it and... It worked like a charm!
So I now have a OnePlus 6 on Project Fi with working visual voicemail and wifi switching. No Sprint or US Cellular but otherwise works the same as an officially supported phone as far as I can tell.
I'm curious how do you test or verify WiFi switching is working for calls on a OnePlus?
I just tried the WiFi toggle on my unlocked 6T and VoWifi did not work. The icon still says VoLTE. I have a real t-mobile sim and it switches to VoWifi at the top when it is connecting over Wifi. It also shows the carrier name as T-Mobile Wifi Calling. The way I tested is to put the phone into airplane mode and turn on wifi. With the tmobile sim i can make a call, with the google fi sim i cannot.

Straight Talk LG Style 4 - Verizon sim / towers

So I bought the phone and a 35$ service card three days ago from Wal-Mart. Activated the phone around 3am that night. Phone hasnt worked once. No calling, texting or using data. Ive contacted ST CS numerous times with no help. Im told the same everytime. Dial *73 then turn off and back on, if that doesn't work repeat. Well it wont even let me dial * numbers. Pops up sim not registered, sim not provisioned, contact service provider. So whats what ive done. Yet they keep telling me my service and phone are active so they cant do anything. Ive seen a lot of people say to get an ATT sim and use that instead of the Verizon sim, and that will do the trick.
My phone number doesnt show up in settings. Network type doesnt. Cant edit or add or delete APN. PRL is blank in settings and no way to change it. Does anybody have any ideas or advice on what to do to fix all these issues???? I have 4 bars at all times but my service says 1x and yet i cant make calls or texts. Calls say im roaming and to buy a service card if I wanna make calls. Texts get stuck on sending then minutes later pop up they failed.

Are you certain that you activated the device correctly and entered the SIM card number correctly when you activated the device?
Give me an accurate and descriptive breakdown of the exact steps you took when you activated the device and SIM.
BTW, AT&T SIMs are for GSM devices, not CDMA devices, if your device is a Straight Talk device, your device is a CDMA device. I doubt an AT&T SIM will help.

I mean, I'm assuming I did everything right lol. I followed the steps the ST website took me thru. Phones brand new, never been activated. Brand new sim. I went to the website, chose activate, chose I have a ST phone, input my zip, input IMEI, input SIM #, input service pin, created my account, updated profile settings, restarted phone. The app says my service is active, the website says its active, ST CS says its active on their end. But I can't call or text or use data. My network type is 1xRTT. I have 4-5 bars at all times. When I try to call regular numbers, I get a "you are roaming, to place calls please purchase a service card" or something along those lines. When I try to call *73 like ST keeps telling me, it says sim not registered, sim not provisioned, contact service provider.

[Q] Google Fi - WiFi Calling

Long shot, but maybe someone else will have an idea. I know Fi uses T-Mobile for "compatible" phones, but for some reason, I can't get WiFi Calling to work properly. I have used T-Mobile MVNOs before with WiFi Calling working, but on stock it doesn't even give me the option, and custom ROMs enable but don't dial on WiFi. I tried using the OP dialer menu to force it to enable in OOS, but it is still not working. Anyone have experience with Fi on the OP6? Does WiFi Calling work for you? VoLTE works perfectly fine, but I really was hoping for WiFi Calling. Where I live, ten minutes in any direction is really rural, and LTE signal is nearly impossible to get.
I have Google FI, and a Oneplus 6, stock 9.0.6, rooted, and my WIFI calling works fine
I am rooted as well, running stock on OnePlus 6, and have had no issues either.
Does WiFi calling actually show up in the SIM card settings, and does it indicate during a call with the WiFi logo? Also, are you both using OP dialer or Google Dialer?
EDIT: I went back to completely stock, non-root to do more testing. Initially, the option for WiFi Calling showed up in the SIM settings, but the taskbar never indicated it was running WiFi Calling, and there was no WiFi symbol when calling. After activating through Google Fi app, WiFi Calling option in SIM settings disappeared, and had to use the hidden menu to bring it back. No change in functionality. Still not working. Unsure how it isn't working.

According to this: https://support.google.com/fi/answer/6224695
The WiFi calling now is supported in none Fi designed phones too, i enabled it but there is no option in phone settings, Fi support is not a help either, I don't know using the hidden menu actually brings it up and working or not
i have Google Fi and i have enabled the VoWifi through OneplusLogkit ( although *#800# brings factory mode / engineer mode option but both VoWifi is enabled) in Google Fi also wifi calling is enabled and in simcard settings it's enabled but still i can make wifi calls. any ideas?

Dual SIM VoLTE Verizon and Fi

Hi all,
Here is my situation and problem. I have 2 Sims:
SIM 1: Google Fi - my personal number, I want to use it for phone calls only even though it has a small data lan
SIM 2: Verizon - work sim, I want all the data to go through here.
My setting is phone call sim 1 and data Sim 2.
When I make a phone call via SIM1, I lost LTE on my SIM2.
I did call Verizon to get the CDMA LESS feature turned on.
If I were to change the setting to phone call and data through the same sim, then VoLTE works just fine. So I think this is an issue with the phone itself/settings.
Thoughts?

You need to go into settings "SIM & network settings".
Select "Dual 4G networks".
I don't have your issue.

I have a similar problem. Voice on SIM1 data on SIM2 different carriers. Receive calls and text OK answering won't work. Roaming in Europe. Worked OK prior to recent update. Same setup works on Samsung S10e

Can't believe there are so few of us having this issue. Why would the LTE turn off when I'm not even using that sim?
Probably many are using just a single SIM.
Have you tried switching the sims in the slots?

I have no help. In January Mint had an issue where their SIM had to be in slot 1. So I flipped SIMs. Truphone won't work either.

Data Service is automatically switched to eSIM1, even when forced not to

I have a SM-N985F Note20Ultra, i recenty purchased a GoogleFi subscription and set it up using eSIM, (shows up as eSIM1 on the phone) my phone already has a normal SIM (SIM1) from my standard carrier.
Under Settings|Connections|SIM Card manager i set Mobile Data to SIM1 , after a while or after a phone reboot, it resets to eSIM1, this is driving me mad as i don't want to use GoogleFI for data. Any idea what's going on or how to fix it, short of disabling the eSIM ?

Maybe you can change settings in Google Fi app.
Check Google support:
Activate your Google Fi service - Android - Google Fi Wireless Help
Important: You must activate and use Google Fi in the United States (territories not included). After that, you can use Google Fi service internationally. We grant exceptions to military and State Dep

Hopefully they can help.
