How to get vanilla Google Voice search shortcut/widget back? - General Questions and Answers

I hope I'm starting this thread in the right section, if not apologies in advance.
I updated the apps on my Samsung Note 4 a few days ago and found all my Google voice search requests being directed to Google assistant, which is slow and useless if all you want to do is search the internet. I have Nova launcher installed and all their Google search widgets and actions are also being redirected to Assistant.
Seems this issue is related to this development:
https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/...s-voice-search-completely-switches-assistant/
If I open the Chrome browser on the phone the Google Voice search action is still working when you press the mic icon in the address bar, they obviously can't terminate the service there.
My question is how can I get back a widget or homescreen shortcut to trigger a vanilla voice search(I'm assuming via Chrome) without the assistant barging in and making my life a misery?

If anyone can also point me to the best way to find a solution, hacking something together?

Am I the only one that is disappointed to see the demise of Voice search??

Have you tried the Google Now launcher? Some devices can enable Google Now to use "Ok Google" from any screen.
My wife uses it, when she says "ok Google", it comes to attention, then she calls '"Assistant" to attention, then she can make requests to initiate any action that she wants such as: a Google search, open or close apps, send and read texts by voice command, make calla by voice command, etc...
The Google Now launcher does use more battery though.

Hi Droidriven, thanks for the reply that may be a work around but I can't drop Nova launcher.
I also have no need for "Ok Google" voice activation, all I need is a homescreen shortcut that when pressed directly opens the Voice search mic and listens for your voice and then immediately thereafter shows the Google search results. I tried using Nova Actions to try find the voice search command within the Google apps but as yet I haven't found it yet.
Even though Google has removed easy access to Voice search it must be possible to hack together a shortcut because the direct voice search functionality is still in the Chrome app. I'm hoping that one of the Devs on XDA may have pity on me and help to cobble something together

Thanks, unfortunately that won't help because I have been using Nova to make the Voice shortcut on the home screen but after my recent updat of the Google apps those shortcuts that were previously activating a Voice search now are forced to activate the Google Assistant.
With the latest updates Google is obviously redirecting all legacy requests for a Voice search to the Assistant, which sucks balls

Uninstall the updates and revert back to the versions that you had before the update, then don't update the apps unless the older versions no longer work correctly.
Also, on my device, I have a Voice Search icon in my app drawer that I can drag to home screen to do what you are trying to do. Do you have this? If not, see if there is a Voice Search app that can be installed from PlayStore, it may install over the existing voice search and show the icon in app drawer like it does on mine.

That would work for a while but seeing it's googles core apps that are doing it not really feasible, I've tried doing something like that in the past and it's a real pita. I need a solution that will work now and going ahead, it is possible.

Unfortunately that Voice search shortcut which you are referring to, and it is a native Google shortcut, now also defaults to the Assistant and doesn't trigger a voice search like it used to.

Also, yes, sometimes workarounds are a pita, but we have to learn to go ahead and settle for what we can get in the now until we can get another solution figured out, even if it isn't specifically what we want at the time. There is nothing that says you have to permanently settle for the workaround, you might find an alternative that is better than the workaround, but you can at least get some kind of functionality at this time but continue the search for a better solution.

Try finding a way to disable/remove assistant. I don't have assistant and I'm using the current Google apps, but I'm on 7.0, not 8 or 9.

That is true but I need something that will be futureproof, whether I roll back the google apps now or not I still need to find a way around this issue. Hoping to hunt down an existing app that can do it

Why can't I download the new Google Search with voice actions?

If I go to Google Play on Chrome it shows the app is already installed on my phone. If I go to Play on my phone I can't find Search at all. I have to search for it on Chrome and then choose Play when I click the store link and it asks me what app I want to perform the action with. Wen I find it this way it tells me "this version is not compatible with your device".
Same here - this really annoys me. If you install the google search widget you can hit the microphone but that still kinda sucks. It seems like Samsung changed Google Voice Search to try and get us to use s-voice.
Just got my phone today so I haven't rooted yet. Doing that and then installing a normal voice search apk might work.
---------- Post added at 05:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:54 PM ----------
FYI - I tried using this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.companion.VoiceShortcut&hl=en
Which adds a short cut to voice search and it starts up... and then dies. Same thing from the google search bar. Really looks like Samsung killed the voice search app.
When you long press the Menu button you can do search/Voice search that way as well as if you add the Google Search 4x1 widget to your homescreen. Tapping the microphone achieves the Voice Search as well. There's no physical search button on the GSIII so this implementation works fine. What more are you looking for?

OK - that's weird. Void search on my wife's phone (also new) works just fine and the shortcut in my post above launches it. On my phone, it crashes. I tried clearing the search data and cache but that doesn't help.
Did you clear the data for both Google Search and Voice Search?

I did - didn't work. But then I noticed that the voice search app had a the button "uninstall updates" active so I clicked that and now everything works. I don't remember installing an update but I must have somewhere along the line. Once it reverted back to stock it worked perfectly. The short cut app in my post above also works so now I can access the voice search w/ a shortcut which is what I wanted.

[Q] Google Search not finding installed apps

Greetings,
Google Search no longer finds applications on my device.
When I tap the magnifying glass shortcut key, the familiar search window opens. If I type "calc," several search suggestions and several of my contacts appear, but the calc app does not.
I can scroll to the bottom of the found contacts and tap, "Search phone." When I do, another window opens, with a slidable bar across the bottom which says, "Web, Images, Places, More ..." and "Phone" is highlighted in red, but no results for "calc" are found.
When I open the drawer and use GoLauncher's search, the calc app is found immediately.
Why is this happening? It used to work.
Thank you!
My phone is an E4GT running stock 4.1.2 with Google Search v2.6.7.721924.arm. I'm not running Now.

Hello,
I am having the same problem And whatever you are saying is 100% correct.. It you searched any damn app from that Google Search bar, You could get that App in results.. Not just system apps!
I thought this could be because of some third party app so I booted my Note II into safe mode and checked.. But still does not show any apps.. SO I guess problem might me with the Search itself..
I am trying to get the core of the issue and would like some details about your phone like:
1. Do you use any optimizer or Cache cleaner? If yes, How regularly do you use it? ( I use one called Clean master and I clean the cache once in about 15 days)
2. How many app are there on your mobile approximately? (I have about 240)
Otherwise our phone is in identical state.. Also if you have already found the solution, please lemme know.
Cheers
EDIT:
Never Mind I found the solution and it works for me at least. Go to settings and then Applications.. GO to Google Search (The one with the blue icon) and select it.. Force stop the app and then clear data... Restart the app and VOLLA it is showint the apps too :victory: :victory:
If I helped, dont forget to say thanks
Cheers

Tizen companion app for Google now / Google assistant

While we all know Google will unfortunate never release a tizen app for Google assistant... for those of us who use the watch tethered to an android phone (most of us) surely someone can come up with a companion app that if nothing else served as a bluetooth conduit to the phone so that we can issue voice commands through the watch's microphone and get responses over the watch speaker?
Sent from my STV100-1 using Tapatalk
I've also wondered if this is possible. I'd like voice commands to control my home automation on my watch via GA.
there is a way to call google now search programmatically as described here (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/...mmatically-initiate-a-google-now-voice-search)
Besides that, the Gear API lets do STT (speech to text) https://developer.tizen.org/develop...ive-application/uix/stt?langredirect=1#create
So, I´m thinking the posibility to make an Gear App that catch the voice, and send it as text to an Android companion app.... then the andorid app coud pass the text query to google now and return the results back to Gear in text or formatted html
If you want voice responses, TTS API in Gear can do the job.
It´s just an idea, I´m so begginer right now to figure if it´s possible to do with success.
(sorry about possible english mistakes)

This would work. One downside is you're still using Samsung's voice recognition to determine what you initially said. Another option would be Google's cloud speech API to get native Google recognition on the gear - but it's not free on a large scale.

It costs the developer that much. It's free for the users. Let's say I make an app with cloud speech, first I would associate my Google dev account with the cloud API, then add it to my application. Now every time someone uses my app to access the API, my account is charged at the .006/15 seconds rate (after free first 60 min/month).
As you can imagine, with thousands of people using the application costs can get pretty high. These costs are usually offset by advertising or subscriptions.
This would be fab...look forward to seeing what the Devs are able to do in time.

I am a UX designer. I gladly help with any design if you need.
too bad it won't happen Samsung always tries too hard and unfortunately dropped the ball when it comes to smart watches instead of using Android Wear with oem skin on top they completely came up with their own ui and code apparently making it impossible to use the apps already on Android Wear market
how can we record voice on the Gear and send it to a companion app ?
if this is possible, I have an idea to process it on the Android side.
Companion App ready for release
I can't use a smartwatch without Google integration, I find them useless without an assistant. I've therefore spent a lot of time and money trying to get the Gear to interact with Google, and finally it's paid off.
My team have just put the finishing touches on our Gear Assistant Bridge and have it in testing now, hopefully it'll be up in the stores within the month. We're waiting on a small bit of code from one of our Dev's regarding a minor assistant reply and that's it!
This tizen native companion app lets you interact with Google Assistant on your Samsung Gear; it also provides interactive results formatted for the gear screen. Future updates will unlock additional features already mostly coded and ensure stability.
Finally, our team has also been working on a Tizen native (standalone) port of the Google Assistant. We anticipate this to be available shortly after the GA for Devices SDK goes live.

Google on Tap no longer available?

Hi all,
I use Google on Tap alot in my studies in order to translate what's on my screen, including images. I did not use it much in December. However I tried using it today and now I can't access Google on Tap, instead it's completely replaced with "Enable Google Assistant", which I DO NOT want, since it lacks the one feature I use most!
Changing to an unsupported English language region used to stop Google Assistant hijacking the long press home, but now it seems that all of the language regions are supported by Google Assistant now.
Google searches show many results for enabling Google Ass, or outdated methods for disabling it.
Does anyone know another way to disable Google Assistant permanently?
Maybe some modification of the settings in Google menu could do the trick. Did you already tried with a simple method like this one https://www.skyneel.com/disable-google-assistant for example?

I can disable Google Assistant, however, previously it would show Google Now on Tap afterwards. Instead, it is completely replaced by the notification from the screenshot. I can find no other way in the Google settings to change back.
Disabling the feed does not disable Google Ass anymore, so that method no longer works.

Yup, that one. It scans a screenshot for names, locations, potential translations etc.
I read that Google Assistant has a "what's on my screen" button but that doesn't show on my phone, and I generally dislike that Google Assistant insists on mic being enabled. (voice search - not my thing - it's so impolite to talk to your phone when 1) in company or 2) in class.)

Okay Google Wake up?

Does anyone know a way to get the Note 10 to respond to the Okay Google command? I like using my voice when I'm working out so I change music or check the weather without always having to pickup.my phone. I'm able to remove apps using ADB, so I can easily remove Hivoice. I can get Okay Google to work only when the device is unlocked. I think I would keep this device if I can get this to work. Also, does anyone have a link to a modified Netflix app that allows HD resolution? Thanks, I know this is the best forum to get technical support for these kinds of devices. Its possible but you'll have to go through some chinese settings and menus, then change the chinese command to OK google.
Thanks! I actually tried that and it requires you to use a Chinese make... It won't allow you to change it to Okay Google. I went ahead and just remove the voice assistant.
I manage to get it work but I need to keep choosing Google as my voice assistant in default app. After some time it disable. Also Google feed integration with Nova launcher works same way need to keep persistent choosing the settings to make it work. Have no idea how to fix it.
