Hi. My Nexus 5 is stuck at the flying dots after Lollipop OTA update. Already try factory reset. Can´t connect to my Lap (running Windows 10) because it says in the device manager: Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed), so I can´t manually update the driver and can´t access it with ADB and Fastboot tool. The device has no USB debugging enabled. In the old computer where I used to connect the device and has the drivers installed says the same thing in device manager as my new laptop. Please help.
So you can't boot into fastboot using the button combination?
Hi. Thanks for your reply. I can boot into fastboot with the buttons. I entered in recovery mode and do a factory reset but still stuck at flying dots.

No, is locked
Here'';s a test: boot into fastboot and unlock the bootloader, reboot the phone into fastboot and see if the bootloader remains unlocked. If it remains unlocked, try flashing a stock ROM since you already did the factory reset.

Is there a way to unlock the bootloader without using a PC?
Not sure as I gave always used a pc to unlock the bootloader.
Was the bootloader unlocked before and it happen to relock itself?

No, always locked. I only installed OTA updates.
OTA updates will always work with an unlocked bootloader as long as the phone is running a stock recovery and is not rooted.
I asked about the unlocked bootloader because a bootloader that relocks itself after being unlocked in a good indication that the motherboard's emmc is defective and the motherboard needs to be replaced.

I never rooted or do anything to the phone, just OTA. Is dead anyway. Can´t do anything to fix it.
You don't have access to a computer to unlock the bootloader? I ask because an unlocked bootloader is required to flash a stock ROM.

I do but can´t do it. Is not detected in my laptop, my laptop send my an error that says that is not working properly and if I go to device manager it says: Unknown USB Device, and can´t update the driver. So is not detected in the minimal ADB tool and can´t unlock the bootloader.
Maybe try another computer, USB cable, USB port, or OS? Could the USB port be damaged?

Turns out the micro USB port was damaged and that´s why any computer was able to recognize the Nexus. It was replaced. Now I fixed the persist partition problem and booting for the first time in Marshmallow . Thank you so much for your replies. Take care

Hello, I have problem with my softbricked Nexus 5.
phone is full stock
bootloader is locked
USB debugging is not enabled
Android 6.0.1
all buttons are working
USB socket is fine
Factory reset from recovery mode is not working - still bootlooping
My purpose is to bring it to live, but I am stuck. Due to locked bootloader I have to use LG Flash Tool. Some time ago I used it with my other Nexus 5 and it was fine - worked excellent. Now I want to do it again with other phone but I am stuck on start: Can't enter download mode (volume up+usb cable). When I am trying to enter to download mode,charging battery icon appears and after few seconds my phone is being recognized as MTP USB device in device manager. I thought it is a problem with the phone, but tried with another working Nexus and there is no difference - it looks like problem with phone-pc connection to me. I tried few cables (original samsung and nokia) and two pc's - no difference. Tried all USB ports etc. Clean reinstall (with registry keys delete) doesn't help, updated version 4.2 neither. Do you have any ideas how to fix it?
Download mode? Never heard of that on the Nexus 5. There is a fastboot mode for flashing stock ROMs and to unlock the bootloader.
I recommend unlocking the bootloader and using NRT to flash a stock ROM.

I have NRT but problem is that to unlock bootloader I have to enable USB debugging - I can't do it with bootlooping phone.
Bootloader can be unlocked without enabling debugging as you are not running adb commands, you need to run fastboot commands.

Easiest way to unlock the bootloader on a windows machine is to do this:
make sure that the necessary fast boot drivers are installed;
boot phone into fast boot mode by holding down volume up, volume down, and power;
connect the phone to the computer;
type "fastboot oem unlock" without the quotation marks and press enter key.
Unlocking will wipe the phone.
Once unlocked, you can flash a stock ROM using fastboot commands.

Ok I did it. Do I have to proceed "fastboot reboot" command? when I am doing it it reboots and still bootlooping. When I enter bootloader it is locked again
If the bootloader relocks itself when the phone is rebooted, the memory chip is damaged and will need a motherboard replacement.

I had a problem with my samsung j7 prime (SM-G610M) biometric reader and now the only way to access the phone is through the password I can't remember anymore.
I tried installing a custom recovery (TWRP) with Odin, then removing the password file and recovering my photos. When I try to install TWRP I get the message "custom binary blocked by FRP lock".
USB debug is not enabled.
Is there any possibility of circumventing this protection?
This should be easily resolved by flashing latest firmware for your device in Odin. Just make sure you choose CSC and not Hone CSC. You will lose all your data and internal memory but will have your phone back. Doesn't matter if you have not enabled USB debugging as you will be on download mode. I assume that you did not unlocked bootloader, reason why you are frp locked.
I installed a custom operating system (LineageOS for microG) and a custom recovery environment (TWRP) into my Oneplus 3T recently. The bootloader had to be unlocked to do this of course.
As far as I understand, locking it again would prevent the phone from booting as custom operating systems are not signed with the phone manufacturer's keys. This also applies to custom recoveries, is that correct?
What are the exact security drawbacks of having an unlocked bootloader? Assuming the phone is encrypted, protected with a strong PIN code, developer mode and USB debugging options disabled, and there's an attacker who has physical access to the phone so he/she can boot the phone to bootloader or recovery interface using the special buttons.
Encryption should protect the user data, at least from unsophisticated attackers, but can the attacker install malicious software into the phone?
With an unlocked bootloader, does the phone respond to fastboot or ADB commands from a computer even if developer mode and USB debugging are disabled?
What is the difference if these options are disabled, the bootloader is locked and the "OEM unlock" option in the menu is also disabled?
Considering my possible phone upgrade in the far future, is there a phone that allows one to insert custom signing keys into the bootloader so that the bootloader could be kept locked while having a custom ROM? Or to flash an entirely custom bootloader with custom signing keys?

All I know is that an unlocked bootloader is easier to root as commands can be sent to the device using the fastboot protocol used to boot it so it is not necessary to take advantage of an exploit on the device in order to root it

So a threat actor with physical access to the phone could then install malware using the recovery environment, without the user ever noticing it?
Encryption should protect the data but having malware in the phone would quickly compromise it.

do I need to unlock the bootloader to upload a newer version of android via odin?
No need to unlock bootloader, to install an updated rom via odin you just need to turn on USB debugging option in developer options on your device, install correct drivers on PC. Can't update via OTA?
