OP 6 freezes at fastboot screen after miui 10 - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

I followed instructions carefully. Unlocked boot loader, installed Beta 11 (newest one), flashed TWRP. Next, flashed windows flasher.bat.......... back to fastboot, booted into recovery, VOILA, no TWRP, standard recovery. Reboot and stuck on bootloader. Have to unbrick and back to square one. happened 2 times. Now, there is an option in MIUI 10 unpack that has "flasher windows no format.bat. Anyone else having this problem?

Reading the instruction on the miui rom thread, i guess to understand that you need to boot twrp, it means you need to boot it like when you go to install it, miui rom has no twrp integrated, so in bootloader run twrp img via adb then install it as usual then flash the last miui 10 fix zip... Note that i give you this advice only by reading the thread because i've not tried that rom

I understand your apprehension, I would also, but thanks for your input.

The issue is when you flash miui 10 via instructions, it wipes out everything, so you have to re install twrp, but miui10 fixes zip is gone, and therefore it reboots to a frozen fastboot. OH well.........

Why you don't try to flash bluespark twrp recovery in fastboot? perhaps you need to reboot to recovery and flash magisk

I'll try blu spark, if that doesn't work, i'll try to flash the rom via twrp, and now cmd

You have to use OB8 in both slots or else MIUI 10 won't work.

could all this be because i'm on beta 11 and not 8?

You need to use the fastboot tools, so you need your PC.

Okay thanks for the help.
Whats the difference between the files?
9.0.0 (PPR1.180610.009, Aug 2018)
9.0.0 (PPR1.180610.010, Aug 2018, Telus)
The Telus one is for people who have Telus for cell service. If you don't have Telus use the 009 if you have telus use 010. Google tends to do this from time to time.

Does this apply if you have custom recovery (TWRP) and modified boot.img (Magisk)?
I fastboot flashed the 9.0 files on top of the July 8.1 version without a data wipe. I had to reinstall TWRP and Magisk using the same install procedure I used on 8.1. Even though root was successfully working on Magisk 16 I had to install beta version 16.7 for the SafetyNet check to work properly.

How long did it take to boot after installing Magisk? I let my phone sit at the white boot screen for about 30 minutes before I had to reflash Pie again.

Not the exact same problem as yours, but I found that I wasn't able to boot into the OS after flashing Magisk 16.7. It would get to the animated "G" loading screen, but then reboot automatically and go into TWRP. Currently reflashing the stock (without wipe) and trying again.
Try installing the Magisk Uninstaller, then rebooting into system. If that doesn't work, you can use fastboot to install the boot.img file taken from the full factory image. If you already have it ready to go, it's faster than a full reinstall of the OS.

For me it did not take long for the Pixel to start after boot. Maybe a minute or two. It did take 5-10 minutes to run the Pie update.
Maybe it was because I originally installed Magisk 16 before going to version 16.7.
I agree with post-mortem's suggestion. It will be easier for you to reinstall Magisk before reinstalling the OS.
I've been starting out by flashing the factory image with adb. Then once it boots I can fastboot the twrp.img and get twrp into the recovery slot with no issues. I didn't get a chance today, but tomorrow I'll try with Magisk again.

I ended up fixing my problem. After posting this, I repeated my exact steps a few more times to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong.
1. boot into bootloader
2. fastboot factory image (without -w)
3. boot into stock Pie
4. fastboot boot twrp 3.2.2.0 image
5. install twrp 3.2.2.0 zip
6. reboot into recovery
7. flash Magisk 16.7
8. reboot into Pie
These steps didn't work, and I would always get into a bootloop that takes me straight to recovery
What I ended up doing that fixed my problem was the following
1. boot into bootloader
2. fastboot factory image (without -w)
3. boot into stock Pie
4. fastboot boot twrp 3.2.2.0 image
5. install twrp 3.2.2.0 zip
6. reboot into recovery
7. flash Magisk uninstaller
8. reboot recovery
9. flash Magisk 16.6
10. set boot partition to B
11. reboot into rooted Pie
Specifically, I used the Magisk Uninstaller, used an "older" version of Magisk (16.6, not the later 16.7), and I also changed my boot partition from A to B after flashing Magisk. This worked for me, and until I know specifically why, I'm going to just re-use this procedure on the next factory image update.
Hopefully this can help someone else having the same problem!

I need Help with Rooting OP6 stable not beta 9.0.2, bootloader is unlocked

So, i have used my whole saturday on unlocking the booloader which was the easiest and quickest and then trying to root, but that has failed every time. I first flashed the stock firmware zip 9.0.2 then I go back I dont reboot and flash the twrp and magisk zip and then it wont boot up,
when I try rebooting after flashing the firmware back to the system it sends me to the firmware,
when I try flashing a new firmware and then boot into fastboot then twrp and flash magisk it wont boot up,
and when I do the same only with twrp it wont neither.
I have tried sevel magisk versions, 17.1,17.2,17.3 none of them worked
as for the twrp blu spark or the one from the twrp website, i was always able to boot into twrp but not really to flash it as that would end in a twrp loop
can PLEASE anyone, someone, with a good heart and patience help me ? im really loosing my ****s over this
:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
Try booting into blu_spark twrp
Installing blu_spark twrp
Rebooting to blu_spark twrp
Install magisk 17.3 or 17.1 (I am using 17.3 because it it beta but less stable.)

The normal twrp is known to be buggy on the OnePlus 6 since there was encryption and stuff. Here is the blu_spark twrp IMG to boot:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=30485
And here you need to flash the blu_spark twrp: https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=30484
Flash that then reboot into recovery again
Then flash magisk
If this doesn't work for you I think there is another way.

You might be on the wrong slot. DO you even have a system to boot to? Not sure why you even tyred flashing the 9.0.2 ROM. If I was you I would start over. Use the fastboot ROM to get a clean wiped system booting. After that
fastboot boot bluespark twrp v86. Img
Flash bluespark twrp v86. Zip
Reboot revovery
Flash magisk 17.1

I flashed the rom because my phone didn't boot up anymore after either flashing TWRP or magisk.
Why should I use the fastboot room, what is the benefit if I use it.
Is the reboot to recovery necessary ? I feel like that part is actually not working properly ?

Yes the reboot to recovery is the most nessesary part of it as it will change slots.
You can try boot to recovery
Flash oos full rom
Flash bluespark twrp. Zip
Reboot recovery
Flash full ROM again
Flash bluespark twrp. Zip again.
Reboot recovery
Flash magisk.

Can you explain how to properly boot back into recovery?
Previously I either just went on the back button and flashed the other Zip's or I went back to the reboot overview and pressed recovery there but that also did not seem to work properly I think.

Problem with flashing custom ROM (error 255)

Hey guys,
after searching through different websites and guides you are my last resort to get a custom ROM running on my Redmi S2.
Everytime i try to flash a custom ROM i get the error 255. Here is what i tried until now (bootloader is unlocked):
- flashing twrp(twrp-3.2.1-0-ysl) to recovery using fastboot
- wiping phone (first wipe to disable encryption since miui puts some kind of password on the hard drive that i dont know, second wipe to ensure partitions are clean for new OS)
- mounting phone to pc to transfer OS image (tried Lineage and Havoc, both modified for S2 (ysl version)) and GApps
- finally, installing OS zip (after which i get error message 255, telling me that twrp wasnt able to install the zip file)
please help me out, ask away if something's not clear

Try this, you have to flash first this in fastboot https://files.orangefox.download/OrangeFox-Beta/ysl/ the R10.0-1 RC1 .img file
And THEN flash this https://orangefox.download/en/device/ysl once you are in the recovery.
Then it worked for me, finally, hope this helps.

so i tried this approach. i first installed how you told me to (orangefox R10.0-1 RC1 .img first), but factory reset nor installing the second recovery img worked because of the encryption miui puts on the phone. UPDATE: i finally ****ing did it. So here are the steps that i took (incase anyone has to go through this **** as well)
1. flash MIUI on mobile device using MiFlash (at least i did this by shorting 2 pins on the back)
2. (VERY IMPORTANT!!!) instantly boot to fastboot using Power button + Volume down. this has to be before android starts setting up the phone
3. flash recovery with the image that celephrn provided in this thread
4.boot to recovery by holding Volume up + Power button
5. install the miui update that celephrn provided in this thread
6. reboot to recovery
7. install orange recovery zip that celephrn provided in this thread (phone reboots to recovery)
8. now you can reboot to system (Do NOT (!!!) set the phone up, just let it work its things until you see the MIUI setup screen)
9. Now, finally you can dirty flash your custom rom (and GApps)
10. after flashing the new rom android will throw you alot of errors so you will have to wipe Dalvik/Cache, System, Data and Internal Storage.
11. now you can flash your Rom clean and you're good to go
(huge thanks to celephrn, helped me out after me struggling for a few good weeks with this damn phone)

Help! Bricked OP6 by trying to install TWRP via fastboot!

Hello guys!
The story began, when I accidently installed a stock OTS update by OP onto my already rooted OP6 with Magsik and TWRP, running a NoLimits ROM...
I just noticed, that the phone said "restart to finish OTS upgrade" or some kind of thing..... I always had the notification on my screen that an update would be available....what surely was ignored because running NoLimits ROM.... but because of some unknown reason, the stock update installed itself magically...
So I ended up finding my phone in complete stock condition, just the unlocked bootloader remained..... F*CK!
I tried to go back to root by trying to install TWRP via fastboot...and that was the beginnig of the end...
By fastboot boot twrp.img, the phone just remained in fastboot mode..... no twrp screen showed up... repeated this a few times, nothing changed....
Somewhere here I read to look up the current slot.... so I did fastboot getvar current-slot.... and after slot b was shown, I flashed twrp into slot b by fastboot flash boot_b twrp.img..... which had the phone stuck in screen "the bootloader is unlocked.....".... so i think that's what is called a BRICK...?
Please guys, help me out...as I don't know how to go on.... I also tried to flash stock boot img from here via fastboot, what didn't work either....
Would be glad for any suggestions...
Thanks!

But I still can't boot twrp on the phone....if I do so, the phone boots into fastboot mode again and freezes at "1+ logo" with "Fastboot Mode" below it..... same like before? The device is fully wiped now...
So how can I get TWRP working again...??
Thanks,
Alex

It seems a problem with TWRP version or Fastboot command.
Please, describe your method to flash TWRP and which version do you want to flash

I downloaded latest twrp-3-3-1.2 (I think) for my OP6, copied the belonging .zip file to my phone... started cmd as admin, typed fastboot devices....the device showed up, then fastboot boot twrp...........img.....enter, and afterwards the "1+" logo showed up, below it read Fastboot Mode...and nothing ever happened... till i switched the phone off again after 10 minutes...
Wrong version you think?
Thanks,
Alex
If you are on Android 10 try to download last version from Mauronofrio or last from Blu-Spark (V9.109). I use blu_spark with OOS 10.3.3
Sometimes the command for being able to boot in recovery from Fastboot is:
Fastboot flash boot "nameofTWRPimage".img
Flash a patched boot image of your rom via fastboot and than flash twrp installer through magisk manager. Done.

TWRP update - no boot into system
Hello guys....it's me again!
After getting everything working again because of the tremendous help of this forum, i tried to update my twrp recovery via twrp by installing the twrp zip-file...
Afterwards, i tried to upgrade my rom from NoLimits 11.2 to 11.5 - but the phone didn't boot afterwards....i've always ended up in the recovery menue....
I then changed slots (from b to a) in the recovery, and then, the phone booted again....but into the stock ROM...
I can't change slots again now and have stock rom in slot a as it seams.... how can i change that again? how can i flash the custom rom in the right slot again?
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Alex

It's OK. That's the point of having 2 slots system. Be able to recover the other partition if something goes wrong.
So now... Do you have TWRP or stock recovery?
You can dirty flash stock on the inactive Slot.
I would install stock rom in inactive slot through Local Update un System updater, don't reboot, install TWRP retention script in Magisk Manager (of course only if you have a proper TWRP running, if not avoid this step), don't reboot, install magisk to inactive Slot (through Magisk Manager), reboot.
After that you Will have stock on both partitions. You can try again the XXX Update.

Thanks for the fast answer!
I think TWRP is working, nur on slot B - the question is: how come that i Installed TWRP Update via TWRP Recovery, was able to reboot Ingo recovery, and after Flash of the ROM via TWRP, only TWRP Recovery was left... No bootable ROM, so i tried Slot A and that was Stock Rom...
How can i install stock ROM into Slot B if Slot A is currently 'running'?

Alex

NOTE: don't reboot until you install Magisk to inactive Slot, and of course, as you're rooted must download Full Zip (not incremental)

I downloaded Oxygen Updater, also OOS 10.3.4, but in my system stettings, update button is greyed out.... with the nolimits ROM before, I once had issues that the OEM update got installed...so that led to my problem which made me open up this thread in the first place.... so i disabled system update via titanium backup when I had root access...
So now it's greyed out...but as it is the stock rom, it shouldn't be greyed out as titanium backup doesn't work at the moment, without root...
Should i flash via @mauronofrio's method and fully wipe the device?... would be a pain in the a.. as everything gets erased again, setting up from scratch 2 times within 3 weeks
Regards,
Alex
Would it be possible to install magisk without twrp, and then flash the NoLimits ROM via Magisk?
TWRP recovery must be there....only in slot B - i tried to change slot by fastboot --set-active=..... but it didn't work, unknown command

Alex

Use that if your phone is international model if not look around for the t-mobile msm tool. More details, more help. What exactly did you flash, how did you flash it, what recovery did you use....

How to flash a rom on oneplus 6.
Boot twrp: fastboot boot twrpxxxxx.img
Fash firmware OOS 10.3.9 or whatever latest is for your device. Get from repo on guides section here or from oxygen updater app. Make sure it's for your device. Don't flash global OOS on tmobile model...After flashing OOS latest, flash EvoX rom, flash twrp installer zip, flash finalize zip, reboot recovery, flash magisk latest. I use canary, format data-swipe to confirm in twrp, reboot system.
That's how you flash a rom on oneplus 6. Finalize is a script that can be found with simple search here on xda that copies firmware to both slots so you don't have to reboot recovery and flash OOS again. I used a Oneplus 6t a year prior to what I use now Pixel4XL and I flashed everything known to mankind available for it just this way.
Boot twrp,
Flash OOS,
Flash EvoX,
Flash twrp installer zip,
Flash finalize zip,
Reboot recovery,
Flash magisk
Format data-swipe to confirm yes,
Reboot system.
Update magisk once booted via magisk manager app icon in app drawer.
You should be able to hold down power+volume up and get in to bootloader node again and do this. Just keep holding them down till you see the "start" screen and let go, boot twrp from fastboot...
