Factory reset fail - Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) Questions & Answers

Hi, I have tried to reset my phone to a factory settings several times, but it was never switched back to the initial settings of a brand new phone. Prior to trying to do this reset, I have tried to root the phone by installing TWRP (I was never successful according to a few root checker apps) and then was stuck with being unable to remove TWRP from the phone. I managed to do that a few days ago with the help of Odin and a stock firmware, however I didn't get the initial settings of a brand new phone. When I do a factory reset, I see a blue screen with an android icon and a message ''Erasing data'' but when I launch the phone I always see a yellow background that I setup in December. I don't see any custom installed apps, only the default ones, but since I want to sell the phone I would like to be able to reset the phone back to the initial settings without a yellow background showing on a Home and Lock screens. Any help?

this may sound dumb, but ive had this exact same issue on many previous phones, and it was resolved by doing a factory reset from within the GUI a few times, yes literally do it at least twice, and then doing a factory reset in the stock recovery literally 3 times, and for the overkill, flash the factory tarball via odin for giggles. If that doesnt do it, not sure what else will

I'll do all that one more time to remove the gold screen, leave the phone aside and purchase a new phone for use. I'm sure it will work since nothing had changed since the last year when I knew the phone last time by hear. Thank God, phones don't talk. I'm sure it will work because it worked with all other phones I had since I know them so well. I wish I thought of it earlier. How smart!

[Q] [Help] Stuck in boot on Google

Alright. This is a 100% stock Nexus S- nothing "development" wise was done to the device, no system tools installed that could cause issues, basically nothing but basic apps loaded on the device.
It just started today. I was working on my bf's Vibrant (another, more successful story) and grabbed my Nexus and hit the power button and it did not turn the screen back on. Holding the power button down did not reboot the device, and none of the buttons would light up or function.
So, I pulled the battery. Now every time I try to boot, it hits the "Google" screen and stays put. I left it alone for 5 minuets hoping it would finish booting and nothing. The soft buttons will light up, and if I touch them they register the touch but it does not help the phone to boot.
I do know that the phone was basically dead right before this happened, and at first I thought it was just dead. However, its been on the charger for at least 30 minuets- which should have given it enough of a charge to boot up, and still nothing.
What could cause this issue?
I did install a couple of new applications today, and I know the market updated a bunch of them but they're all apps that I've had on several phones (minus the two new ones today) and have never had an issue with any of them. The two new ones I downloaded were OS Monitor, and a 2G/3G toggle for hopes of improving some battery life.
But those are the only two things I've done differently. I've only been using the phone for a week but I haven't had any problems at all, before this.
Now- if worst comes to worst I can seem to get into the bootloader, and through that, stock recovery. So I can try to do a factory reset and wipe cache but without a backup I really kinda hope thats a last resort.
Please help, and let me know if you need any more information.
Thank you!
I understand that you're fully stock which I assume means you have a locked bootloader (everything I say from here on out assumes as such)? First, I'm going to also assume that you didn't update to 2.3.3? If not, then follow the steps in this guide to boot into a custom recovery and from there go to backup and restore and do a NANDroid backup. Now go to mounts and storage and mount USB storage (or whatever its called, don't have my phone right here). Plug your phone into your comp and copy over whatever you'd rather not lose from your SDcard (just in case you have to wipe). Now download the 2.3.3 update from here and put it on the root of your SD card. Now go back and flash this. Reboot and see if you're golden. If so, great, if not try a factory reset.
If that doesn't work go through the steps again to boot into a custom recovery, you might have to unlock your bootloader and wipe all your data (again) and restore your backup and try doing a factory reset with that. Don't worry about unlocking the bootloader, it can be relocked with a simple command and it won't wipe anything to relock it.
Here is the command just in case:
Code:
fasboot oem lock
I got all the way to having clockwork recovery booted up on the phone, but nothing would mount. Everything gave me an error, and factory reset froze...
I don't think there is anything I can even do from here, is there?

[Q] Unable to format/rest to factory defaults after Clockworkmod installation

I've had a great experience so far with my xoom! I had it rooted and overclocked since the first day I had it!
Its starting to get sluggish and things are beginning to go a little wonky, so I'd like to reflash to either the stock honeycomb 3.1 installation, or one of the roms that I've seen floating around.
The trouble is that the minute I saw the 'encryption' feature, I used it. I did that before ever rooting or overclocking it.
I am now unable to reset to factory defaults. Here is what I've tried:
- using the menu option from inside of the settings area to reset the tablet to factory defaults: When I do this, it reboots and gets to a screen with a little android logo and a progress indicator - however within several seconds the progress indicator goes away and is replaced by that nasty little triangle with the exclamation point saying something isn't right.
- Booting into clockwork mod and formatting everything available to be formatted from CWM: This actually broke the tablet and I had to reflash things to get it working properly. However all of my user stuff and all the settings remained intact.
Does anybody know how to reset the tablet to factory default after its been encrypted? You guys know 50x more than Verizons support team will.
My only other option is to back up all of my data, "break" the tablet, then go use my warranty at the store to get another one. I'd really like to avoid that if at all possible.
What version CWM do you have? Flash the newest recovery if you flashed the recovery from ROM manager. If that doesn't work then flash stock software.
What version Xoom do you have? This is for 3g http://www.xoomforums.com/forum/motorola-xoom-hacking-guides/2788-how-return-stock-3g-4g-hr166.html
You don't have to do the last step of locking if you want to reroot. That should also remove encryption. If it doesn't do a factory reset from settings. And verify CWM works as well.

Weird problem. Cannot factory Reset. Phone keeps restoring previously installed apps.

Hi There,
I have been having the Samsung Galaxy Sl for 2 months now and the software kept crashing. I went to privacy and opted for a factory reset. Funny thing is no matter how many times I do a factory reset the phone restarts, and installs all the apps which i personally installed again. This is not a google recovery problem where all data is backed up in google. But the apps just magically reappear even after formatting the internal sd in recovery mode and reflashing it to the latest firmware. I am at a loss. I got a shock that even after reflashing my firmware to the latest 2.3.4 JKPJ5 it still reinstalls apps such as AVG, the BBC News, Cool reader.. And even my old wallpaper again.
Steps I have taken:
1) Formatted internal sd
2) Used recovery mode and wiped partition and cleared cache
3) Did factory reset and even installed a new firmware.
I have done everything. Pls help. My home button is also not working and the all the corrupted data from my old installation also comes back
Even when I restart my phone, any new apps i install vanish and are again replaced by the old apps.

Thanks.
Funny thing is i tried the reset codes. And only some work. I tried the reset code *2627*3855# . But I get an error saying its a connection probelm or invalid MMI code.
Sorry bangalorerohan. But I am not getting any replies in the Q&A section. I will just continue here for now..
Tell me the method you used to flash the new FW! I will tell you your error!
The probelm began before I even considered flashing my firmware. The sd card will be unexpectedly removed causing forced closes. Did a factory reset using the privacy menu quite a number of times for a few weeks. It helped for a while but the problem will always reocurred though. Then suddenly, factory resets stopped working alltogether. The phone will delete new apps i install every time i reinstall them and reinstall apps which i uninstall every time i restart the phone.
I thought flashing the firmware will fix the problem. But even after flashing the old apps and settings keep coming back.
Here are the steps I used to flash.
1) Removed sim card and micro sd card.
2) Restarted phone in download mode.
3) Run odin and plugged phone in Usb port
4) Checked Repartition, Auto Reboot, and Reset Time boxes.
5) Downloaded pit files.
6) Waited for it to pass
7) Pressed reset
8) Took phone out from usb port, took out battery and turned on download mode.
9) Flashed PDA, PHONE, AND CSC files. By ticking Auto reboot and reset time checkboxes.
10)Clicked Start
11) Waited for pass and started again.
I even tried using the recovery mode to wipe everything but still had the same problem. Apps and settings still keep reocurring from the corrupted android 2.2
I have done everything and am hoping for a solution for this frustrating problem. THinking of reflashing to android 2.2 and sending my phone to samsung for warranty.

I think you have done everything correctly. Maybe it's a hardware problem because your sd card keeps unmounting. Have you dropped it? They best way is to send it to service center for repair.

reflashing back to froyo
Hey guys thanks for your help. but the problem seems to be related to the hardware. I am reflashing my phone back to froyo and sending it to get the warranty. But after reflashing there seems to be another problem. I cant receive calls anymore. But i can make calls..
I need to know if samsung can find out if I have reflashed my phone because I am afraid that my warranty will be void. Is there anyone with experiece regarding samsung warranty?

play dumb, dont mention you flashed, tell them you tried to update with kies and since then the FW is acting up, you can't make calls anymore etc
Interestingly... i have exactly the same problem. I have had this problem for abt 4 months now and i have tried everything (except sending it back to the repair centre). I don't think its a hardware problem but more of a bad flash somewhere in between.
i have been searching the net for ages for a solution... have yet to find any.
Hi all:
I've got the same problem!!
Has any one a solution? I'm crazy with this.
Why do i keep posting on threads that have already been resolved!!

Stuck in the bootloop :(

I noticed One+ was a bit slow so I decided first to switch from power save to balanced and it was still going slow so I decided to do a reboot. After the reboot the phone got stuck at the boot animation. I can get into recovery tried a factory reset didnt help. Im wondering if i try flashing the OS if that would work. Plus what would be the best way to do so.
What ROM, Kernel are you using?
Switching from Power Save to Balanced shouldn't cause your phone to be stuck in a boot loop. Something else caused it.
Everything is stock, it was really weird I was considering maybe using adb to flash a stock img (although i have little experience doing that). I tried rebooting again to potentially start this process (this is after a good 5 or 6 reboots and a factory reset) and it started up to the welcome screen. Another side issue it seems like the factory resets for this device only wipe the apps + user data. I know if I was rooted i wouldnt expect the media to be wiped but its stock with the stock rom. I bought it off ebay and when i went to load my stuff i did a factory reset and noticed the previous owners data including call/text logs and contacts were all on the device

If you were to flash a stock image, it would be done in fastboot mode and not adb mode. So is your phone booting yet?
You can always adb sideload a custom ROM and flash that to get your phone to a bootable state again.
The phone booted up after a good 3 hours a factory reset and multiple reboots

Have I bricked my new S6?

I just picked up this phone yesterday. I started setting it up and found an encryption feature I thought would be useful as I deal with sensitive data. I read the instructions which said that the phone will take an hour or so to complete encryption, and I saw it restart and progress through the progress bar that appeared. It then went onto the Samsung logo and stayed there for about 2 hours. I got concerned and thought it had frozen so I restarted the phone using the 3 keys. Now it just recycles and gets to the Samsung logo and doesn't progress?!
Have you tried to factory reset or the data is not a thing that you can lose.
I had to find out how to factory reset via the boot. I've done that and my phone successfully works again. The issue was I couldn't get into the phone to reset - it was stuck on the Samsung logo, so resetting from boot was the only way (and thankfully it worked)
