Hey guys,
Since 2 weeks I have an Sony Xperia XZ2 and I spend hours to get it unlocked but I am end of options now.
The smartphone has the newest firmware what is available and on the Sony forum I didn't got the support what I was expecting. (their community is dead, they post once in couple of weeks...)
I try to unlock the bootloader to obtain root access and restore my apps from my other smartphone (OnePlus 3T) but unfortunately the OEM unlock option in Developer Options is greyed out.
I did my research and gave the phone a factory reset twice but without any positive results.
My debug data:
Manufacturer: Sony
Model: H8216
Android version: 9
Android source version: 9_201808
Api level: 28
Build id: 52.0.A.3.27
Locale: nl_NL
See screenshot for what I mean.
Thanks in advance!

Did you already check if your device is unlockable?
Dial *#*#7378423#*#* (*#*#SERVICE#*#*) to show up Service Menu > Service Info > Configuration (Rooting Status: Bootloader unlock allowed: ? )

YES! Finally I have fixed this issue. It was definitely an software issue!
I just updated my phone using Newflasher & XperiFirm to install the firmware with version number: 52.0.A.3.163_R4B
I can now unlock my bootloader and finally root my phone!
You will lose the camera if you root your phone. And I am sure that Sony Netherlands won't fix it for free

The DRM keys are verified in the first stage of repair.
If you unlock your bootloader, it's already gone.
You don't even need to root...
They'll reinstal the firmware using EMMA, just like repairing mode on Xperia Companion. (with media stuff)
Root nowadays is just a small entertainment.
Not extremely necessary as it was some years ago.
And, yes, the camera will be a completely mess.

In order to root the phone you need to unlock the bootloader and when you do that you will loose the camera DRM keys and the camera will turn black. There is a fix but the quality of the pictures will be worse (for example a lot more noise in darker pictures than before).

Just update to the newest firmware and unlock your Tama phone .

About the "completely" camera mess, I attached a photo.
Btw the Sony aosp will gain a better camera quality than stock since they develop the drivers from scratch like stock.
But there we'll get RAW for GCAM.
At the end of this month the next camera fixes should come.
I'm talking about now.
And not just the camera will be a mess... X-Reality, bank apps, DRM protected content etc.
With unlocked bootloader and whatever "fix", the camera is still a completely mess.
Sooner or later someone will be able to port Gcam to AOSP ROMs, and it'll be very nice, even if not 100%, 95% is better than stock with DRM keys.

That's a picture from "now". With an unlocked bootloader and without a drmfix.
Banking apps still work.
DRM protected content like Netflix, too.
We don't need an AOSP port of GCAM. It'll just work with RAW support.
As example Xperia Maple AOSP has already a better camera quality than stock.

Not all bank apps are lazy about security and a lot of it have deep verification. (Santander, Itau, Banco do Brasil etx)
You can't say it's ok because it's not.
HDR content under Amazon Prime force close with magisk patchs, probably Netflix 4K content too (HDR as well)
The Xperia XZ Premium of a friend have root and nothing works properly (of the above things I said)
About that picture of now, I hope they solve the compatibility of Gcam... Because it still looks like a (bad) camera from six years ago.
I always warn about the bottlenecks of doing root for everyone who asks me.
But, for you guys, I really wish all success on customization.
Cheers!

The phone is good. Only one thing is bad. It's the camera.
The camera from the Samsung Galaxy S3 and from Huawei Ascend P7 is better than from Sony Xperia Z3. It's sad, in the past (several years) was Sony good in cameras (mobile phones).
I think root with locked bootloader is being worked on.

I guess we can agree that the IPhone is waaaaaaay more popular and still an untethered Jailbreak sometimes needed months to become available.
And its not a matter of popularity or how bad we want it, it also includes luck besides methodology to stumble upon a suitable exploit. This is meticulous sifting trough code until you're lucky.
Do you think it will ever be possible to get root and install a custom rom without losing the DRM keys for the camera? In another thread i read that you have to backup a partition to avoid losing the codes before flashing anything, but can these codes even be used again when restored?
I really like the phone and would want to have it as a replacement for my One M7, but as long as there is no solution i will delay my decision.. I can't imagine Android without root anymore, so the camera DRM keys are a no-go when rooting.
What about this way:
Backup the DRM keys
Root the phone
The keys get deleted.
Restore the DRM keys.
Would this work, without losing some features?

When you restore the TA partition it relocks the bootloader, hence you lose root.
Either you have
Unlocked bootloader, root and no DRM keys
or
Locked bootloader, no root and keep DRM keys
Until there is a locked bootloader root method this is the way it will be.
But you definitely CAN restore the DRM keys to get back the original camera quality if you decide that you don't want / need root anymore? In other words, 100% restore to stock is possible if DRM keys were saved?
Ehm, and as far as I know you need root to backup the TA-partition and DRM-keys... Which kind of is the issue atm.
But if there is root possibility without unlock it should (at some time) be possible to backup the TA-partition/DRM-keys after which it SHOULD be possible to relock the bootloader (and get full functionality as stock) again.
Then again, this is all theoretical and based on earlier models.
I have not received the 32.2.A.0.305 update for my Z5 yet, so I went to XperiFirm to check which region my device's firmware is from. It turns out the firmware is CDA 1298-2996 (South Africa).
I live in Australia and wish to flash the Customized AU firmware with CDA 1298-7277. I want to do this so that my device will be updated and will be using the Australian firmware.
My bootloader is locked; is flashing possible without unlocking the bootloader?
Will flashing a different firmware potentially cause damage (my device is not network locked, and single sim E6653).
Will this affect my warranty / DRM keys?
Thank you in advance, I appreciate any help

you can flash and what ever with your device, DRM keys are safe!
when u ulock bootloader, the device WIPE user Data and sony partitions (TA (trimArea) partitions) and DRM keys and FIDO keys will be lost!
this $h!t is with sony only!!
i rooted my fone and having modified kernel having DRM stimulation installed. its working fine now.
- at any given day, to a thirsty user who wants to CONTROL his Xperia to the most. i would say, ignore drm keys and make a deal with devil to have root access
- however since Xperia Z5 (unlike latest xperia Xseries) came out on LP kernel. so u can FLASH LP kernel and root it with app like kingroot and extract your DRM keys to windows pc and back it up. now u can flash the LASTED Android back on you Xperiaz5 and unlock your boot loader to have root access.

Thanks for the advice, I will look into it in the future when CyanogenMod improves and I need to unlock the bootloader to install it. My main incentive for this would be to greatly improve the camera, which we all know takes very washed-out photos.
I have just gone through the firmware flashing process. Thankfully there are many guides available and it all worked just fine, so I am using the current, correct firmware now
The worst part was just the waiting and suspense (feels like a lot could go wrong).

Thats whats quizzing me about this lol
its still under warranty so I might send it to Sony first to see what they do and if not i'll use xperfix
Alright good luck
First of all: This tool is not made by me. I am not associated with the maker or the tool, i'm just linking it. This tool is made by Heiko Frenzel
Secondly: WARNING!!!!!! ---> It, is EXPERIMENTAL support so far, it could **** up your phone.
I came across xperifix and it promises to make the whole process of rooting and installing recovery and drm fix painless., and in the latest update 3.1 xperia xz2 support is added.
It costs 19 dollars, as a one time purchase, future updates are freely included with the one time purchase
I have not used it myself, I will be waiting till it is more reliable and supports the latest firmware.
the tool only works with XZ2 Compact (H8314, H8324) on Firmware @ 51.1.A.4.265 (if you don't know your version, don't use this, it does NOT support the latest firmware version)
Important note: TWRP Recovery must be manually installed before XperiFIX can install Root and DRM patch. Before purchasing the software, please check if a TWRP recovery has been released for your device. A refund due to lack of compatibility with experimental smartphones is excluded.
Read everything? okay here is the link.
so to summarize:
The xperia XZ2 compact support is still experimental.
It costs $19, one time (Future updates after the purchase are free)
you need a XZ2 compact on firmware 5.1.1.A.4.265.
You need to install a TWRP recovery yourself before using this tool.
If anyone uses this, please leave a message with your experience.

Yes... a special version.
Just remember to also support people that do good work.
Hi,
looks interesting, but.. :
- it's $19 and you're not sure it will work as it is experimental
- you've to install TWRP, so to unlock the bootloader and to lose the DRM, without being sure the DRM fix will work
Quit dangerous :/
Not really. There are already guys who have unlocked bootloader and lost drm keys who said they will use this tool as soon as a working twrp recovery is released.
So you don't have to be the guinea pig.
And i'm sure, that such a complex tool has a lot of work inside which deserves this price.
Has anyone tried ?or knows if it works?
dRm fix work good?
However this is the first time I see a root tool with a price, since every phone I had was easy to be rooted with usual software (kingo root, ecc). But things are so difficult that you need to pay for it. What does Sony want to get?

There don't seem to be a lot of devs that got the xz2 (compact)
So maybe its not hard, but just hardly anyone is trying.
I havent checked other phones, but I heard that rooting and modding android isnt being done as much as it used to be.
Viper rom stopped because there were hardly any people left that wanted it.
The tool (if its legit) cost one time 19 dollars. If he keeps developing it then it might support your future phone(s). Making it cheaper overal.
Once it's proven to work, I 100% will pay $19 for it. All my previous phones were HTC and you had to pay to root them properly as well. $19 is a fair price to unlock root.
Someone has poured a lot of time and effort into cracking the DRM code so you can use your phone properly after losing the keys. Perhaps reframe the $19 as not paying to unlock your phone, but thanking someone for their hard work.

You are on pie firmware, which had a bug that you can't unlock your device on that firmware.
You have two options:
- either update to the latest (December) firmware (if already available). The bug is fixed on that
- or downgrade to latest Oreo firmware. You can find almost all info needed for that in this thread.
Hello. I bought a used Xperia XZ2 compact, beautiful. But the quality of the photos (especially in the dark) is bad.
I have the doubt that the old owner had rooted the device or unlocked the bootloader, losing the DRM keys, causing the bad quality of the photos.
Is there a way to understand if the DRM keys are still on the phone?
I tried to access the hidden menu by typing *#*#7378423#*#* and in Service Info -> Security appears as in the attached photo.
Do you think the DRM keys are there?
Could someone take a screenshot on his XZ2 Compact with the DRM keys?
Thank you.
What stands in the service menu after bootloader unlocked ? If there stands like this : bootloader unlocked: yes

If it was lost before I do'n't know because I bought the phone like new but the drm keys was provisioned and in other threads I read that this mean the drm keys are still there.. Of course the camera quality still is the same but sony removed this "function" (and for "this function" I mean the fact that if the drm keys are lost your camera won't works) with Android 9 and I already tested this with the XZ1 compact.

I didn't say that.. I said that unlocking bootloader on Android 11 on my XZ2 compact didmn't break the camera and seems that the drm keys are still there. Furthermore Sony has removed the drm keys camera dependency since Android 9, so if you run Android 9 or newer you camera will still work even if you will unlock the bootloader.

I don't know if the keys still remain there after flashing custom roms... I think that they will be wipe because when you flash a rom you need to wipe everything but you can make a backup before doing some destructive operation. But I'm not sure about the backup and other stuff to preserve the drm keys...

You're welcome. I'm looking for a good custom rom to put in my XZ2 Compact right now....
Of course unlocking the bootloader delete the drm keys... But the camera is still working

Uhm, how slow is capturing photos after unlocking the bootloader? I read somewhere that it becomes much slower. And that super slowmo video doesn't work after unlocking. Could you confirm that, or did it only happen on android 9 or older firmware?
