Been away for a while - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

I don't want to get into a life story so I'll just say I've been gone for awhile. Back then this phone couldn't be rooted. I just have a couple questions. Please forgive me because I'm aware most can likely be found in other threads but hopefully I can get a quicker more condensed and direct answer.
So we can root now it seems? Is there a "best" method and can we unlock the bootloader without issues?
There seem to be roms available. Any recommended? Are there custom kernels available?
Any known issues I should be concerned about?
I appreciate any answers :good: If you want to give me some flack for asking here instead of searching all over - that's fine (though unhelpful).

Thoughts on ROM/dev threads.....

It seems to me that there is a lot of frustration amongst devs, those in the know, and the unschooled to the ways regarding pretty basic information. Stuff like "is MR2 froyo or gingerbread?". I know I'd be asking and saying some industrial strength stupid and annoying things if I didn't have a good friend in the know. I suppose what I'm suggesting here is perhaps several things. The first would be describing a number of specifications regarding the ROM or kernel at hand. Not just for the latest ROM or kernel, but for all the downloads available on the OP. Usually the change log covers that, but what I'm suggesting here is a certain I uniformity of certain information. That way some noob can go do his homework real fast and not post some stupid question.
The second thought I have is creating the "stupid question thread" (that would grow like a weed, huh?). It would have basic stuff like what the RUU's are, their characteristics, what radios they work with, what the different radios are, setting up ADB, and really basic stuff that I keep seeing posted again and again all over. I was reading through the Tbolt forums months before I got my Tbolt and my last phone was an Incredible so the worlds didn't change a hell of a lot for your average flashing junky. But that isn't everybody's experience. I'm suggesting a thread or the guy that just got his Tbolt and is saying "Now I wanna root it!" then "It's rooted! Now what's out there!" And zap! there's te thread that gives him a rundown of all the basics.
This sound like a good idea to anyone? If so, let me know and I'll work something up.
I am a noob, TB being my first Android phone. When I started reading the forums, my very first thought was: how come I can't find a noob thread that I can actually understand, that explains the basics, etc. It did not exist! Hence al the annoying (to some) posts elsewhere. If such a thread existed it would have been a huge help for me. It could be organized similar to ROM threads, with some introductory remarks, (a radio is XYZ, you flash it this way, etc.) followed by specific questions / comments. I like the idea!

This is a good idea.. if no one makes one soon ill take it up

There is no substitute for taking the time to read the various threads and educating yourself. I think the devs do a pretty good job of supporting their work but to ask them to put together super noob threads and FAQs is just not something they're gonna do with any regularity.
The reason why no one has done it is because all of the noobs are to lazy or ignorant to read those threads, then continue to post their stupid and already-answered question anyway, flooding the threads as usual.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I think it sounds like a good idea but as stated above people probably won't read it or take it's advice. Typically all the ROM/Kernel threads state EVERYTHING needed to know in the OP. Yet people will still ALWAYS ask something that is answered in the OP. Most people look at screenshots and then jump straight to the download link. This is my 3rd Android phone and when I got the TBolt I read and read prior to rooting. I had one issue that I hadn't seen posted so I asked. Then I ended up figuring it out on my own anyways. If people would just read info prior to downloading and jumping into it they would be fine. Creating a new thread with basics is great but how effective will it truely be?

I agree with you 99%. However, there are several cases especially with BAMF threads where there are hundreds of pages and thousands of posts. The OP many times doesn't have solutions to common problems and the only way to find an answer is to spend hours reading through hundreds of pages. (I admit that BAMF is doing much better with their 3.0 RC2 thread). I know you are going to say to search but when a thread is that large it is hard to find meaningful search results.
Google is a noobs best friend. What is an RUU? Google it! What is deodexed? Google it! Etc. Etc. Etc...... The Devs develop. It's our job to educate ourselves. They do this for free. Between the forums and Google, most if not all questions can be answered. The ones that can't be answered is when the forums should be used. Just my opinion.

Agree. But, the question "can the X patch from the previous version be used on this version?" People get flamed for asking questions like that and many times there is nothing on the OP.

Because most often.. the dev himself does not know the answer.. and honestly.. the best way to know if something works or not is try it yourself. .. so I can understand when devs get frustrated with people asking certain permutation and combination of patches will work with their roms or not.
Once you understand (which comes with experience and lot of googling).. what affects certain aspects of a rom.. then you'll know yourself if a particular patch will work or not.
Patches from previous roms or other roms.. will never brick your phone.. the worst.. your phone won't boot up.. or it'll boot up and FC like crazy.. in which case you can always restore.
and I agree.. the best way for a noob to educate is google..
googling is an art.. once you get good at it.. there is almost nothing that you can't get information about.
And with some of the responses I just read in this thread is exactly why I haven't rooted my T-bolt yet. I rooted my D1 and really enjoyed flashing different ROMs and Themes but the HTC experience is a bit different from the one on the Motorola. I don't feel like getting flamed for asking something that those of you that have been using HTC long enough now find to be a useless question. I ran Blackdroids ROMs because he had an IRC channel where you could ask questions without being flamed openly in a forum for 100+ to see. I learned quite a bit to where I could eventually help others with it but I'm not at all comfortable yet with Hboot and ADB but hope to learn enough from reading to not bother you with questions you find trivial. I've read for a week now so what's another week
It appears there is a need for what I propose. Regarding those who's complaint is that nobody will read it, I say, at least someone put forth the effort and if someone like, linking to the thread is easy. Indeed looking stuff up for yourself is wise, however, it takes more time for people and all too often you don't know how accurate what your reading is or from what authority the writer speaks. I will agree most devs supply ample info on their work, but often its in jargon that makes no sense or lacks context. Part of the purpose for this thread would be to supply sense and context.
Hopefully over the next few days I can find time to whip something up. I welcome all suggestions and comments for content!

[Q] Superlite or Sky ICS (the real thing)

These two ROMs, Superlite and Sky ICS seem to be the best alternatives for moving my Skyrocket to ICS. I'm not going to ask which to install, I know what you will tell me..…try them both.
I'm hoping I can get some opinion as to which is more stable, more likely to install well over my configuration without problems, which is being developed more regularly, which has more known bugs, stuff like that, battery life.
I have a 727R, that's the Rogers Skyrocket, with the latest CWM, the faux kernel, 2.6.35.14, v10m. The radio is i727UCLA3, and the ROM is UCLA3_2.3.6_rom.
I want to install with a ZIP file, without the leaked ICS via ODIN. Not sure if this matters.
So grateful to any advice.

They are both being developed regularly. Read through the threads and you will see development, bugs, and progression.
there are 100's of pages of threads from different periods in their respective developments. It's hard to keep straight what's old and what's current.
I'm looking for help, the same as I would give you if you asked. so please xcrazydx, if you have nothing of value to offer it's better you just don't waste your valuable time replying.
Its easy to try them out yourself. Everyone is different. Flash one, run it for a few days then flash the other.
PS. Don't be a jerk, and just go read for yourself. We don't owe you anything. Quit being lazy!!

Not as simple as you think. Over the last 2 weeks since the leak, there has been talk of Rogers not working, or having to install the leak first with Odin and then install a ZIP rom. Also worried about the radio with Rogers, I've heard problems with that.
So I'm nervous, and I'm looking for some help. No, you don't owe me anything. I try to help people here who I don't owe anything. It's just the decent thing to do. It's why we have discussion forums with places for questions. And how is it lazy by asking people to share experiences? Jeez, this place is turning ugly. Try to remember when you were new here.
The whole thing about it is, if you don't do the reading, you will most likely end up writing repeat questions because you didn't feel like doing the reading to fix any little issues you may have with a ROM. Reading first is like getting free experience.

You asked about 2 specific roms. If you don't have the time to read through some posts you shouldn't be here and you shouldn't be flashing anything at all. I help people all the time, but this is something you must do on your own. No reading = you asking stupid questions that have already been answered multiple times.
I gave you a courteous answer and explained they are both worked on regularly by the devs.
Which is not what I asked. Why don't you go away. I can say for certain you've turned me off this forum.
Jeff, I have read both threads completely. I don't understand why I can't ask a simple question here about experience with Rogers phones on these two ROMs coming from Gingerbread just to get confirmation that there are no major issues which were first reported when the leak came out.
And I don't understand why people who don't want to answer, feel they have to come her and criticize.
Didn't even ask about smooth ice by rem... Which i think is super awesome too... The long and short is this, all the roms are built from same base so not really any huge differences
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
I can give you my opinion if that would help. I had less problems with sky ics. None are perfect. But both are better than stock.

Hahaha, I tried to help. Without reading the threads of the roms in question one cannot make an educated decision on which one is best for your needs. I even answered one of his questions. I don't get what his problem with me is.
If u want an opinion. Sky ICS. Then remove more Bloat if you want and make it more "super lite" my "opinion" is Sean updates more often and listens what people want. But it is so easy to just flash both and give both roms a try and see what "you" think is better.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Both roms are based off the same ics leak so in that regard they are equally stable. Just install the from that has more of the features u want, because from a majority perspective both have been well received
I can't comment on Sky ICS but I've been using Superlite 5.0 for a while now and I'm very satisfied with it. It's very stable and relatively bugless for me. But to repeat what others have said, it's really down to personal preference. Both roms come from the same source, therefore stability wise there isn't going to be a major difference. If it helps, I used both sean and mhx's GB roms, and I preferred the latter, which was a big part of why I went with ICS Superlite in the first place.

Should I return my S4?

I recently upgraded from a Nexus 4. I was unlucky when I purchased my S4 because it came with the MF3 firmware. It's really important for me to be able to run custom roms on my phone. I know that using the safestrap method I can install TW based roms but I'd like to have more options available to me. It seems as though this has been the case for a while now. Should I just return my phone and purchase something else or wait for a fix in the future? Also, with the 4.3 update coming soon for the AT&T S4, will this effect my ability to use the safestrap method?

A. You need to search, the question you asked about safestrap has been answered several times as well as it can be answered at this point.
B. Only you can decide if you want to take the phone back or not. How is anyone supposed to make that decision for you? If you need information to help you make the decision, I suggest you read the "pinned" threads in the General and Q&A sections and also read the threads that are on the front couple of pages of those sections. Good luck.

I would say return it if you really care about flashing custom roms, get the nexus 5 if you want pure Android experience. Otherwise, you could keep it and wait for the flashing method to becomes available.

... thanks buddy. the reason i ask is because maybe there is a developer reading this who might be able to give me a clearer timetable on when a fix might be released. it seems as though this has been an ongoing problem with no fix in sight. if the problem were to be fixed within the next month or so i'd be interested in keeping the phone. hence, why i ask the community for advice. it's not as though i'm a little child who doesn't know how to spend his money. and my question about the update/safestrap issue isn't clearly answered on the OP's FAQ... maybe if i sifted through thousands of pages. you go out of your way to write a lengthy MOD EDIT response yet fail to answer the question that could be easily answered much faster.
Anyone who buys an S4 or Note 3 from AT&T right now isMOD EDIT And did not do their homework before buying.
I'm lucky because I got my S4 the first day it was released, so I can run any ROM I want, including AOSP. But as of recently, nobody who buys a new S4 or Note 3 can run REAL custom ROM's, ever (as of today). And I'm talking AOSP of course.
When the first of my two current AT&T contracts is up (June '14), I'm ditching AT&T and going to T-Mobile.
I'll sell my used S4 to cover the cost of prematurely ending my second contract.
MOD EDIT AT&T.
I still love Samsung though. And have no plans to leave Samsung phones as long as they continue to give us removeable battery covers and MicroSD card slots.
Read and make a decision on your own. No one can decide it for you...the end!
Consider the Thread closed.
To the OP the reply to search and read is the best reply. The #1 rule on XDA is search. Your remark to the individual suggesting to search and read is unwarranted.
Also questions go in the Q&A section not in General. Please read the XDA rules here and familiarize yourself with them.
To all others profanity is not permitted on XDA in any style or form. Masked profanity is profanity. Also abusive name calling is not tolerated.
Thank you for your future attention to this.

[Q] Flashing/ROM Question

Hi all,
Long time reader of the forums here since I had one of those old and clunky Windows PDA's. I used to mod the PDA's and older Win mobile 5 and 6 phones. I'm on my 2nd Android, the Skyrocket and have had it for abover 2 years now. So far it's the best phone I ever had. I had to start a new account cuz I couldnt remember my username. Yeah I'm getting old...
Anyway, I have had a battery issue since doing the very first OTA update. I have checked everything using multiple guides including the ones here. Either I have a bad battery or a signal issue. When sleeping for 8 hours I lose about 10%. I had the SD card issue and the Play/location services issues but fixed those, I also fixed all wakelocks and it goes into deep sleep. When in the house my signal bar under battery in settings is all grey unless I go outside then it's green. I really dont do all this modding anymore so I never flashed a rom on it. I did just flash my Transformer TF300T (usinf CROMI-X 5.4) tho so I am familiar with the process. So I figured I woulkd flash a new ROM and/or a radio onto the i727. I have been reading all day about flashing the rom and reading about the various roms availabe. most, if not all seem to be AOSP based and in beta. Also they state in the post they require CWM abd not TWRP. I'm looking NOT to do daily or weekly uodates.
I'm looking for:
- stock based ROM that's stable
- no bloat from AT&T or Samsung
- preferably without Touchwiz
- extra modifications are okay (I love extra goodies as long as their useful)
- able to use TWRP 2.7.0.0 as that's what I'm using now (I read TWRP is easier to use and that's what I want)
Android verion 4.1.2 or later
Basically I want to do a Nandroid, do a Ti Backup and backup all my files then flash the rom and restore my crap and that's all. No upodates, nightlies or anything else. Finding a stable stock based ROM was easy on my Asus but can't seem to find much of anything for my phone. I've been looking and reading all day and I have eye issues so now have a migraine. I would appreciate some info from all you flashers out there. If anyone could recommend several rOM's for me, with links, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Shannon
lol, if you did actually search and read you would know not ask such a question, read about the roms and decide on ur own, for the skyrocket its fairly easy, read then try them out and see if its what u want
start reading the 1stop sticky, link in my sig, everything u need is there

Sounds like your presuming I read nothing. when I did the Transformer it was easy. I found a site with a list of stock roms and a list of AOSP roms. That made it easy to read the ones i wanted to look at. On this site, or any other, I dont see any such organization of the roms. All I would like to know is which are stock ROM based. leaving a reply with a small list would have been appreciated. Then I culd read up on them. I had a bad bought with diabetes and my vision kind of sucks sometimes and I get headaches easily. Reading everything there is to read about all the roms will take me much lonhger than someone else. I know you get the similar questions all the time and you cant answer them over aand over again. I wasn't asking for a 10 page tutorial, just a few names of stock roms for me to read up on.
Thanks anyway,
Shannon
I went back and reread the 1stop sticky and say there are 6 stock roms for my phone listed there in a sea of other roms, That small list of roms I didn't notice the first time around. Are there any others besides those?
i was referring to this, did u read this in the sticky and also in the forum rules:
"Do Not Ask For A Which Is The "BEST" Rom Or Any Adjective Thereof For A Rom As The Mod Will Close It, Read About Them In The Dev Forum And Decide On Your Own."
why, because it usually/always starts a pissing war
From the moderator
The Best Rom is the one you like. Preference for Roms & features is subjective and there is no good answer
Before this becomes a Troll session, I will close

Is Android LP rooted for this phone yet?

I just got my Note 5 this afternoon, not a single one of my credit or debit cards will work with Samsung Pay and since I am with USAA it may be a while before it does, as such the itch to root is even stronger now.
Has the latest OTA been rooted yet? I am currently still on 5.1.1 but I am getting the notification for an update.
Would it be wise to update or should I wait a bit longer?
In other words has unlock and root been achieved on the newest OTA yet?

I didn't ask if it could be rooted.
I asked if MM had been rooted or if it was only LP at this time, as all I see in the development forum are 5.1.1 roms and kernels.
This is why I asked the question the way I did.
There is a very good reason that XDA has the reputation of being a bad place to go if you have questions, and your response is part of that problem.
The Q&A forum is for precisely these style questions.
Now, seeing as how I did not ask how to root the device as there are plenty of threads on that, would you care to take a stab at answering my actual question.
I won't be mad at a link to a thread which answers the question I asked.
Just do this

Looks like this when done right
And again, note that the link and the screenshot is for LP, I am asking if MM has been rooted yet.
Though I do very much appreciate the response.

Its all good. I won't go there with this one. The back and forth isn't worth it. You should also probably edit your post!
MM Beta is rootable. Go to the development section to find out the pros and cons of using the beta. I advise you to stay on LP. There's only the stock rooted beta kernel available for MM. There's a lot of cons to being on it, so please keep that in mind is you decide to flash it.
See how much help I still gave you without actually posting a link? Not trying to be a **** but if we soon feed the work, the work wouldn't know how to feed itself. I started off as the wise noob ever, and bricked phones. If I had only taken the time to Google and research, those devices being bricked could have been avoided.

Jammol,
I realise in my first post I did not give names as I had thought I had. This is why upon re-reading it I apologized as my original question wasn't clear.
Thank you for the follow up.
In any question thread the answer should be clear, even if it is simply a link to another post, in this way those coming here in the future can follow the link rather than seeing a simple "nevermind I figured it out" and my post being the only response to their search. Please note, I did not say you had to provide a link, just said that even if your answer was simply a link to where I could find the answer that would be fine as well.
Note I did search, but as I was looking for MM ROMS I could not find anything, I was under the mistaken impression that MM was on the device. This is where I erred and why I could not find anymore information.
For all future folks taking a look at this thread, as of today MM is not available on the Note5 and the newest OTA (as of today) has already been rooted and you can find a number of ROMS in the development section.

Jammol,
I realise in my first post I did not give names as I had thought I had. This is why upon re-reading it I apologized as my original question wasn't clear.
Thank you for the follow up.

Damn, you came off as really stabdoffish and a bit entitled, like everyone here owes you their time searching for a subject you could easily have searched for yourself. Smh

Honest question for you.
After reading the thread, seeing where I had apologized and seeing that the issues was solved and the back and forth was done, what compelled you to respond in such a negative manner?
You end your statement with "smh" which I can only assume stands for "so much hate" as it is currently used.
So why bother? You see the thread is resolved, you see the question has been answered but then you just felt this need to respond?

Smh means shaking my head. And it doesn't matter if it was resolved, you got all upset that none of us took the time to GOOGLE or FORUM SEARCH for you, when you could have easily done that yourself. The sense of entitlement was pretty thick.
And again, if you had actually bothered to read I state that I did search but was under the mistaken impression that this phone had an update to MM when it had not, hence the reason I could not find anything when searching for MM ROM's, this is why I asked.
So your assertion, especially after I had already stated I did, that I didn't search is completely unfounded.
The issue I took was with a response that boiled down to "do your own research as this help forum isn't here to help you".
This is an issue at XDA and why XDA is universally made fun of and considered a bad place to go if you have questions that haven't been answered, because a bunch of folks will respond with vitriol without bothering to read the rest of the posts.
For instance, the best answer was already given, but it would have hurt nothing for Jamool to have said:
"The latest OTA update is currently LP and that has been rooted, you can find multiple roms in the development section of the forum, here is a link (link). And in the future make sure to make use of that search button."
At which point I would have realised that I was mistaken on the idea that the Note5 has Marshmallow already and that would have been the end of the conversation.
Now, can we consider this matter closed otr would you like to once again respond and tell me how I didn't bother to search?
P.S. I cannot be the only one that has noticed that the search function seems to stop working at 11pm EST am I?

I just got my Note 5 this afternoon, not a single one of my credit or debit cards will work with Samsung Pay and since I am with USAA it may be a while before it does, as such the itch to root is even stronger now.
Has the latest OTA been rooted yet? I am currently still on 5.1.1 but I am getting the notification for an update.
Would it be wise to update or should I wait a bit longer?
In other words has unlock and root been achieved on the newest OTA yet?

Where you on N920TUVS2COKC when you got it? If so how did you root it. I got mines today & dont see any updates available. Also the space kernel has been pulled.
............ junk . deleted
I did google, and as I said already. I was wrong.
I guess you really don't bother to read previous posts.
How dare I post a question in a question and answer forum specific to my question.
