Hi all,
As you all know Android rolled out the new 9 pie Update on all xiaomi devices.
After updating my mi a2 lite became the crappiest phone on earth as all the bugs started appearing(phone was rebooting multiple times, image was broken, sd xcard not recognised and battery life draining fast as hell).
Because of that I decided to root my phone and install Havoc 2.0. Fair enough, I used the rom for a bit but honestly I am not really happy about it too as doesn't seem really stable at all (many functions are there but not working, the camera app is crap, the volume bar appears every time I touch the fingerprint sensor and the fingerprint lock isn't working as well). At this point I wanted to revert and get back to the stock oreo 8.1 so I booted the recovery twrp to restore the firmware backup that I did at the beginning before installing havoc but this disappeared!!!!!
Reading again the procedure i followed I noticed that one of the steps was to wipe the caches and, as the procedure was saying, the system as well(I know.... I am an idiot for relying on what the procedure said)!
Obviously this deleted my previous backup completely leaving me empty hands without any stock firmware/rom.
Is there any chance to revert back to the stock (maybe downloading all the pieces and then force flashing them?) or I am screwed?
I know, I should have followed one of your tutorial (and I am sorry for asking now for your assistance) but now I think you are the only one that can actually help me.
Best regards,
D.

Wiping system is not what wiped your backup, your backup was stored on internal storage or on external sdcard, it does not get stored in system. The only you could have wiped the backup is if you also chose the option to wipe the internal storage when you wiped cache and system.
Factory reset and the normal wipes in TWRP do not wipe /data/media, /data/media is where your user data is stored. Only specifically choosing the option to wipe internal storage can wipe /data/media.
And you aren't an idiot for following instructions, you're an idiot for following instructions incorrectly. If you had wiped cache and system but left internal storage alone, you wouldn't be in the mess you're in.
Have you tried doing a Google search for:
"Return to stock (your model number)"
If it's available, that should find the instructions, tools and files you need.

Hi, first of all thanks for replying.
Interbal storage hasn't been wiped out, i am sure about it as the proceedure was saying not to do it. (I've selected just the first 3 options and internalbstorage is the 4th so I am def8nitely sure about it). Might be somewhere else then?
I did a second back up now and I see it so at this point I am not really sure where this could be!
Is 12 hours that I am searching proceedures but everything is very confusing.

Do you mind me asking you one last thing?
At this point, having the original backup, I can try another custom Rom before reverting everything to Oreo.
My question are 2:
-Because you seem very driven, do you know any stable custom rom that I can run on this Xiaomi MI A2 lite?
-Do you know if I can Install the old Havoc on and purge this pie version?
Thanks again,
Davide

I don't know anything about any of the ROMs for your device, I don't have your device.

I installed TWRP, then rooted 10.4.2.18.
I need to start over as well, between the random app loading, gestures and stop, I think from scratch would be nice.
Can I do a factory data reset?
I have a backup from TWRP but I didn't label it very clearly and I'm not sure what it is.
It's unlocked and rooted - by doing the reset I'm assuming I'll loose it the root - am I correct?.
OK, so I asked what:
1. the wrong forum?
2. The wrong site?
3. Worded it wrong?
4. Too noob?
I could go on. Over a 100 people looked and NO-one can even point me to the right place if it's been answered before, or have an answer!?

You can try factory data reset from settings app if you like. It is a variable on what you will loose and gain. It is a good place to start. Don't do wipe from the bootloader menu or wipes formats from twrp.
Note: Some wipes and formats can be used in twrp in the case where you will flash a rom after, when flashing stock it seldom helps.
Note: Twrp allows you to choose the name for your backup
You can also flash any of the asus stock firmware but you will have stock recovery (instead of twrp), probably loose root, and all of your apps and data.
My choice for best asus stock firmware is 10.4.2.18. It is not best for everyone but I like it.
Good Luck!
Sorry I didn't notice your post. For everyone else I'm sure they didn't wish to deliver such iffy information.
For future reference, a factory reset will take your ROM back to the point of a fresh install. You will lose all data that has been added since first flashing your ROM. If you were running a custom rooted ROM then you will not lose root. If you go back and flash a non-rooted ROM then you WILL lose root.
If you have data that you need to keep, I recommend using an app like Titanium Backup. Go in and choose to do a batch backup up all your apps. Once you have done a factory reset, you can sign back into Google Play and download Titanium. You can then go in and restore the apps you want. I don't recommend installing all of those apps with their data. Titanium gives you multiple options on how and what you want to restore. Only install the individual app data that you must to have. Usually, I'll restore all of my apps with no data at all. I will then go back in and individually restore the app data that I need.
If changing a ROM, restoring app data for all of your apps can have adverse side effects. That is why I say to only install what you need. Hope this helps. :good:
the best way to start from scratch is do a factory reset then use fastboot to upgrade you're firmware

I did label them, I backed it up - I think - right after I installed twrp and rooted it, ( I usually do ) but I'm not 100% sure so I didn't want to try and screw it up.

I'm generally not too concerned about loosing stuff, as long as I know WHAT I lost, so I can replace.

Checked and that's what I'm on and so far happy with it.
I un-installed a ton of apps, while I was waiting for an answer, and the thing doesn't seem possessed any more, so I'm adding them back in one at a time giving each 2-3 days.

ABSOLUTELY no reason for an appology. I'd done a search and not come up with anything I could use, and couldn't believe no-one had done this before.
Everything sounds good.
I need to give you one piece of info.
The only thing flashing twrp replaces is stock recovery. Everything else remains the same.
Good Luck!

If you are talking about backup with twrp, by default system, emmc, and data are backed up.
Reset erases user apps and data; all basic data would need to be entered as if you had just purchased the unit.

OH! I was under the impression that it read an image from to the boot parition/recovery partition and wrote that. NOW I get it.
THANK you.
Last question - If I do this (installed es file manager last night and the bloody thing wild), is root.signed.zip still good for rooting this? It's unlocked and 10.4.2.18.

I use es file manager for working with both sdcards. I have used it since I received this tablet and find it very useful. Maybe uninstall and reinstall. For a root browser I use rom toolbox pro.
I have not used root.signed.zip but downloading and looking at the installation I don't find a problem. I'd say try it.

Just saw your post - don't know where I went ...
I do not have a custom ROM, so what you are saying is no matter how I start over, I'm going to have to re-install TWRP, re-root it and ad apps - correct? It seems to me that settings|backup and reset, I'll leave TWRP intact just reset.
OK, I'm somewhat screwed I think - if anyone's out there (sorry pretty frustrated), I cleaned the D-Cache and the cahe, better but not good. Then a settings|reset and the from within the OS and the same problem does what it wants when it wants, opens programs (usually google voice), pops up the window to set wallpaper, freezes etc. Then I restored a backup from early January from WITHIN TWRP, and cleaned the caches - same. Restored another and cleaned same. I have cleaned the system, as I cannot see/figure out which clean rom custom I can use on this, as I think that might be my only hope. Other than tossing in the junk pile as it's unusable like this.
Whatever is going on is IN the system, which leads me to a custom rom as my only possible salvation - (think I just said that, hum).
Any ideas?
Hello, I am in a bit of a jam and am trying to find the best way out.
My device is encrypted using the native Android feature. I have Lean Kernel and CleanROM on the device. So it is rooted/unlocked. I was trying to clean the device further by uninstalling some useless apps with Titanium Backup. Turns out I messed up on something..
When the phone boots to the encrypted device screen, the keyboard doesn't show up! I am not able to get into the phone to do anything!
I have the latest CWM recovery installed. I tried a factory reset and such, but it says it fails to mount the internal SD card. /:
Anyone know how I can fix this and flash a new CleanROM? Data wiping is not a problem for me, but CWM refuses to mount the SD card to do it..
Any advice? I am relatively new to the Android scene, so try not to make things too complicated.
Odin?

I am looking at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984436
I am downloading the very first package. Since that seems to wipe everything, which is what I want at this point.
Will flashing that work?
I'm not sure if it will work, as I don't encrypt my device. What it will do is wipe your system, data, etc. partitions, but it won't touch your internal SD. This will probably be fine; it will install a keyboard and you should be able to enter your password, that is, if it can flash the ROM properly.

I'm still trying to understand how Android storage works, so I may sound like a noob here haha..
All I have is an internal SD card. I don't have an external one or anything. Are system, data located on another internal flash chip or something? If they are on the internal SD, I would imagine everything would be formatted and reset once this is flashed.
Sorry, I read the linked post wrong...So this will wipe everything, system, data, and internal SD.
As for the difference, the system and data are different partitions than the internal SD.. so normally when you factory reset in CWM, it just wipes the data, not your internal SD or system. What this means is that it won't touch some files, like ones you download from the internet, but it will get rid of all of your apps and appdata, as you know, and these are stored in the data partition.
I got it sorted. Thanks for the help.
Glad I could help!

Just wanna say this thread was a lifesaver, and I'll just leave my experience here for fellow noobs, like myself, stumbling into this issue.
I CMod'd my S3 with Clockwork (following very detailed instructions) and tried out encryption (knowing ahead of time that a factory reset would be in order if I didn't like it). As you all know Clockwork has trouble mounting the encrypted /sdcard/ directory, and won't do the factory reset. I was afraid that since Clockwork couldn't deal with the encrypted data, so too might Odin, leading to the risk of bricking. This thread gave me enough courage to give it a go. Following the above linked instructions solved the problem. Odin had no problem wiping and writing over the encrypted data. after I was back to stock I ran through installing Clockwork and CMod again. And just like that, the problem's fixed.
Thanks a bunch everyone!
EDIT:
I just got a response on twitter from a friend who ran into the same issue with clockwork. According to him, apparently TWRP doesn't have this flaw. My phone's working now and I don't want to monkey around with it anymore, but maybe a more experienced user out there could comment on/confirm this, and maybe add the info to the tutorials (if it's correct).
Thanks again!

Yeah, I was worried I might have created a $200 paper-weight!
I'm glad that my question ended up helping you as well!:good:
Had a bit of trouble trying to do this last night, which resulted in a few hours lost sleep. I went formatting everything in CWM and realized after the fact, I also formatted the internal SD card. Luckily ADB worked in transferring the zip (learn something new every day).
Anyway, after all said and done, all my apps were still on the phone. This is after formatting and new ROM...
How can I truly start from scratch to make sure this new ROM is 100% fresh and free of any unnecessary apps from previous ROMs?
Also, what would be the best current radio and link to said radio?
TIA
EDIT: I had just realized the issue with Factory Reset/Wipe Data. This one I had forgot to mention as I could never use it as all options said no and the menu was not scrollable. Just decided to try and use the volume buttons and sure enough there was more to scoll to.
That said, would the following be a proper procedure to follow;
Wipe Data/Factory reset
Wipe Cache
Format: System, Data, Cache, Boot
Wipe: Dalvik then Fix Permissions
Install order: Rom first, Gapps second, Kernel last
Reboot
???

The method I follow is
1. Wipe Data/Factory Reset (this takes away all your downloaded apps?
2. Wipe system/cache/dalvik (this wipes everything else)
3. Flash ROM, Gapps, Kernel
The thing with android is, even if there are some files left over from the previous ROM, they'll get overwritten with the ones from my new ROM, taking them away regardless. The reason you wipe everything to make sure there aren't any files that won't get overwritten. So basically, wipe everything and flash, and you'll have a fresh new ROM also you don't need to fix permissions after you wipe everything because they'll be no permissions to fix! Lol

I don't know it offhand but its probably somewhere on the development forums. I just noticed I said "my new rom" in my original post, I meant "the new rom" just in case you were a little confused (probably not but that would've annoyed me if I didn't address it)

Newest radio I can find is from last year. Maybe that the newest. I know for certain signal and data is a million times better. However, I still have no 4g
And Im having an issue I ned to report about the ROM but XDA wont let me post... :crying:
Hi,
My phone and all my personal data (4 years of photos, videos, and other app data) just got WIPED.
Here's how it happened:
* I was on OS 5.1.5 till yesterday. Had TWRP as my recovery and Magisk as my root method. Everything was hunky dory.
* Oxygen OS 5.1.6 hit my phone today. I downloaded the update and installed it. Before installing - it clearly stated that my phone will be unrooted by the update. I was ok with that, as I would have simply installed Magisk again from TWRP.
* After the reboot, I opened Magisk manager and saw that Magisk wasn't installed.
* So I did a reboot to recovery from the phone's reboot options (advanced reboot was ON in developer options)
* It did not boot to TWRP. Instead, I saw a stock recovery type screen (black background, OnePlus logo).
* There was a single text called "Decrypt" and a terminal type basic keyboard displayed on the screen.
* At this point I knew TWRP is gone and this would definitely be the stock recovery, asking me for my PIN, to decrypt storage.
* I entered my PIN and pressed ok. IMMEDIATELY after that the screen displayed the message - "Wiping" along with "do not turn off your device while this happens" or similar.
* I was shocked to see this, as all I had done was enter my PIN in a stock-looking recovery with the OnePlus logo.
* The phone rebooted, and lo and behold - I see the new installation screen saying "Hello" to me!
ALL MY DATA IS GONE. Without any fault of mine! I simply did an OS update, and boot to recovery!
PLEASE HELP!
So you went 4 years without doing a backup? I think your out of luck.
First, I am pretty sure all your data is gone absent some expensive recovery.
Second, when you took the ota, you went back to stock, which is why twrp and magisk disappeared. This is actually how the system is supposed to work.
I don't know what you did in the stock recovery to cause a wipe. You should have rebooted to bootloader and reinstalled twrp from fastboot.

This is exactly where it's just crazy wrong. It just booted up to a recovery, with a screen saying "Decrypt" and a keyboard! NO mention of the next step being "Wiping".. ! This is just plain crazy, if that's how its designed!

pretty much. was just migrating data from one phone to the next using titanium backup/restore.
How could 4 years of photos and vids be gone? The phone is only weeks old. Surely you have backed these up to a cloud or even a pc at some stage? If you habe data backup turned on, you should have all your apps ready to reinstall.
You should have booted into bootloader, flashed twrp and magisk after the update. The OTA will always resort any custom recovery to stock.

I just kept migrating it from the previous phones to the next phones. Google photos does have backup of photos and videos. But there was so much more: SMS, call logs, whatsapp photos (the ones which were unlinked due to being moved to SD card earlier), screenshots, voice recordings, telegram images/videos, google authenticator tokens, and many apps whose data doesn't get backed up as part of android/google backup.

I don't have answers for either question. You might have more luck posting in the OP community, or in the official firmware thread.

Hi,
My phone and all my personal data (4 years of photos, videos, and other app data) just got WIPED.

You have a rooted device with a custom recovery so how did you install those in the first place and not loose data then? That wipes your phone doing that. It wiped again because it was being unlocked and relocked that always wipes it. Don't claim this is no fault of your own your running a modified device so yes it is your fault don't come on here and play victim it's really annoying

Wants to go 4 years without a backup then mod his phone and claim it's not his fault he lost data ??? what a joke
That happened to me too, but I solved it because after I flashed stock and then upgraded to 5.1.6 I installed TWRP in fastboot before booting to recovery.

Surely you have those titanium backup files though still right? Just restore from that, sure you may lose a week or two but it's better than 4 years.

Android is supposed to wipe data only on unlocking the device. Once it's unlocked there's no reason Android should automatically wipe data.
It did not get relocked. It is still unlocked. How did you come to that conclusion?
Also, I root my device ONLY to install TitaniumBackup and Helium. I do not meddle with anything else being root (no ROMs, tweaks, etc.). Is it my fault that Android STILL doesn't have a way to backup everything without having to root your phone and install special backup apps?
How can the OS just wipe the data partition without user consent? With NO message displayed whatsoever. Just ask a password go on "Wiping.. please wait". What the hell.

Yes I could recover some data from the SD card of my previous phone. Not the TB backups though.
I really need a way to (a) image the phone so that I can possibly recover/pay for recovery in the future (b) recover the data from the phone
I did a little reading. Apparently forced encryption is something that Android Oreo comes along with. All the data files are now by default encrypted (at a file level not a partition level). It is apparently encrypted with some randomly generated encryption key decided by Android, and not the PIN you have set to lock the phone. The PIN is just associated with that key. I'm pretty sure that key got deleted as well when the device was wiped (I'm assuming it must have been implemented like that as a security measure). So I have a wiped data partition with encrypted files!

You knew the data partition would get wiped otherwise? I've been rooting for years and never seen such behavior

Take this as a lesson, always have a backup. Especially if you mod your phones

It did have consent when you took the OTA with your modded device and it said decrypt and asked for your password it was about to wipe. Again you modded your phone and didn't keep a back up this is no one's fault but yours
Yeah I always back up my messages, photos, etc.. To a PC before any type of flash or update, I use smsbackup and have it uploaded to Google drive also titanuim backup and move the files to PC and just back ur DCIM folder. Sorry for ur luck but we all learn lessons the hard way, and no u Cannot recover, but if u have ur old phone may still have the texts on them and use oneplus switch to move them over
I guarantee this post is from a troll, nobody is dumb enough to do any or all of the idiotic things the OP claims.
Got the (important parts) of my data back. It only wiped the "data" partition - which contained internal app data and sms/calls, etc. It did not wipe the "sdcard" partition (also called "internal storage"). Found this out when I was installing TWRP again (before going through the OS welcome process) to create a dd image of my device for possibility of a future recovery. Android file transfer (thanks to TWRP's MTP support) popped up and showed all my files on the sdcard partition. Immediately backed it up.
To all those senior members who're making fun of this, thanks for all the help, really. You guys were really helpful.

I think this is impossible.. First the phone didn't return to me the root message before updating like oneplus 5 and second point, if you enter the pin to decrypt your data in recovery it never do an automatic wipe i'm a bit confused on what you've really done, but for sure you did something wrong because updating system had never wiped anything

Well this is completely possible, I just had the same thing happened to me. It was exactly as OP described it (except it was OOS 5.1.7, and it did not even ask me to input a pin when I rebooted to recovery). Fortunately I had a backup, so it didn't impact me much but still, it is a very weird thing.

Thanks for being sarcastic about being helpful. Sorry we can't hold your hand and fix all your problems because your not responsible for your own actions of modding your phone and can't take the consequences when they arise. Maybe you should learn how some more things work and what can happen when you do this before you do it and don't backup your device ever
Hello,
I have a small issue with flashing ROMs that makes me stuck with MIUI. Every time I want to flash Lineage OS or Pixel Experience, the phone boot straight to TWRP. Only MIUI works fine and actually boot, is usable, etc... The thing is that I do a full wipe everytime, install/flash the right firmware (I believe), the phone is unlocked, everything.
Do I forget a step ? what is "vendor" ? And finally, could someone provides me his setup with firmware + a different ROM than MIUI + everything necessary, to see where is the problem ? I would be very grateful.
One more thing is that custom ROMs worked perfectly before, I even had Pixel Experience Android 10 (BETA) installed. It's when I wanted to try MIUI 11 that I could not go back :/
There is a post from 10 months ago but I think things might have changed, especially as I never had to do this before : https://forum.xda-developers.com/xiaomi-mi-mix-2s/help/device-booting-to-twrp-t3886344
Thank you for in advance and have a great day
Format data, don't just wipe. You will have a recent vendor if you have installed a recent miui build.

yeah it's different. if you just simply wipe data you will realise that your internal sdcard still survives, but if you format data even your internal sdcard gets erased as well. formatting is unfortunately a necessary step when switching between roms with different vendors, such as flashing any recent pie rom with custom vendor while on miui.
in order to format data there is a separate button in the wipe menu of twrp. usually when you wipe data you go to the wipe menu and slide straight away, or you choose advanced wipe which is the left of the two buttons above the slider. to format you choose the other button, which says format data, then it will prompt you to type yes. type yes and enter and it will begin formatting. but remember this will erase your internal storage, so backup all your personal files before attempting this.
Thank you so much, both of you, it worked ! I wasn't even close of being aware of the format button, I always went straight to wipe. For me, wipe was like formating and so I believed the format button was useless. Have a great day <3
