I know this has been discussed in the Gummycharge thread, but its buried pretty deep.
I know kej said that it has to do with the gallery, but I have uninstalled the Gallery3D.apk using the toolbox and I still seem to be losing about 10% per hour with the phone sitting idle on my desk.
Is there something we can use to quantify the appropriate battery drain rate? We all use our phones differently, so we need a way to standardize the battery drain so we can discuss it.
I saw someone mentioned that they were only losing 2% per hour while idle.
Currently, If i unplug the phone, and leave it sit for an hour (after a full charge) with only wifi on (gps, and bluetooth off) I lose about 10% per hour. If i use the phone at all, for example, When i wake up in the morning after a full charge and read the latest XDA posts, or some news articles, I can go from 100% to 85% in about 20 min.
this doesnt seem right.
Can we consolidate the battery drain issue to this post and post fixes and discuss reasons here?
This should have been posted in General first off.
Also, do you have SpareParts installed? If so, use that to check if your phone is entering sleep mode. You may have an app that is preventing your phone from sleeping, which will cause excessive battery drain like you are experiencing. My battery drain is <<1%/hr in airplane mode (I lose 1-2% over 8-9hrs in airplane mode) and when not in airplane mode, I'd say I loose at most 2-3%/hr if the phone is only sitting idle and I'm not using it.

OK cool, I wasnt sure if this was a general issue or not. Can a Mod move it? Or should I just delete and Remake?
Ive looked in spare parts and Im not sure where it would give that information, under battery history ive got running at 38.2%, screen on 25.2% phone on 14.5% and wifi on 100%
nothing mentions sleep mode

I get a drain of about 3-4% an hour if mine sits. However I leave it on LTE and at the office there is no LTE service yet. Yeah I'm just lazy......lol.
Curious on your SpareParts thing tho. I've never used it much really. Where does it show/display whether or not it is going into sleep mode. now I'm kinda curiosu if mine is correctly or not. Not that I'm very concerned about 4% and hr as I make it threw a full day fine. TIA

If it's not running, it's sleeping. You're battery drain is likely caused by wifi being one 100%. If you are leaving the cell radio on, LTE, and also wifi, that is 3 radios on all at once, draining power.

is that just an issue with the charge? with my Incredible, leaving wifi on saved battery as it did not need to talk to the cell tower and try to get a 3g signal. Also, Before I flashed, I was able to sit all day in school and still be at %80ish power.
I will see what turning wifi off does.. but to be perfectly honest. that seems a little inefficient, that would mean every time i turn on the phone to use it, i would have to turn on wifi and sync, then turn it back off again.
For example, since I wrote this post, my battery has gone from 87% to 70%. 17% in 66 min even with wifi on, that cant be "normal drain". And All i have done is looked at 2 text messages.
Please do not get me wrong, I am not complaining at all. but I would like to get to the bottom of this.
I was on my way to the store to return the charge I hated it so much, but after flashing gummy and your kernel, I love the thing more than any phone ive ever had. So please do not mis-judge my intentions here. I simply want to know if this is normal. In my experience with sell phones (Droid Incredible for over a year, Wife has htc thunderbolt, and now the charge both stock and now custom rom) It is draining much much faster than any phone I have used before.
If this is normal, then I will just deal with it.
I am going to put it in airplane mode for the next hour and see what happens
It is def something in connectivity. Still at 75% after 1 hour in airplane mode. going go turn on 3g only and check again in 30 min.
I was going through battery stats and saw that wifi ON was at 100% and Wifi running was also at 100%..
seems like maybe somethign is using my data. so if that is true, it should try while on 3g and I should get huge battery drain.
will report back
Dude you are NOT alone. my phone drains like a siv, when its nt even being used. I always have LTE off, unless i tether wifi and I always plug it in when i tether so i dont drain. Itll just sit and be idle with NO use and lose 30%. i have gps, wifi and bluetooth off..... wth? this phone is looking ro get returned if i cant sort it out. i cant sit on a charger all the time.
If you are running Gummy, the gallery thing should not be an issue anymore (he fixed it a few versions ago).
When you go into spare parts, go to battery history and change to sensor usage. That will tell you immediately if you have some app that is draining your battery (ie the Gallery).
For the most part the battery killer for people is network searching. 3G,4G and WiFi are all in the same boat in that they will kill your battery if your phone has to constantly scan for them. To my knowledge using WiFi is better on power than 3/4G, but that is only if you are connected to a good signal and your phone doesn't have to search.
Also, I have noticed that the WiFi antenna on my charge isn't all that good, so you may want to keep an eye on it during your day. You may find that it is losing WiFi and scanning without you realizing.
The LTE radio in the Charge can be a huge hog. Especially if your in an area that likes to switch between 4G and 3G. Both my work and my home switch between 3G and 4G a lot and its not uncommon to see my phone drain almost 10% in an hour. On a good day it will be 5% an hour with LTE enabled. With mobile data and wifi off it can go down 0-2% per hour.
As far as I know, this is most likely just a sign of the Charge's battery. I'm not sure what Engadget was smoking in their review, but my Charge gets pretty horrendous battery life, especially in areas with dodgy signal (think constant switching between 3G and 4G). This is the first phone I've bought extra cables for charging in the car and office, but honestly, with these things getting as crazy as they are, I think this might be the norm in the future, what with battery technology lagging behind so much.
Some tips I've learned: turn the Wi-Fi radio off when not in use, and if you're in a really low-coverage area, consider even turning data off (you'll still be able to receive calls).
I live in NY, which is absolutely blanketed by 4g. I get better 4g reception than 3g in some places. I am getting horrific battery life. I just wiped, then mounted each partition individually and wiped and then reinstalled gummy 1.8.5 and per imnuts' recommendation, not install the reboot options. I had a custom rom on this phone within an hour of purchasing this phone, so I can't compare stock to a custom rom's battery life. I just know over the few days I've had this phone, my battery has been terrible. I shudder to think what the Thunderbolt must be like.
Your battery may be draining fast the first boot. Just reboot it. If that doesn't work then it didnt flash properly. Just reflash everything and remember to clear data, cache... hope it helps.
You can download an overclocking app and reduce battery use IF you already solved the battery drain problem.

i know there are a lot of other threads out there, but I haven't found one that talked about the problem deeper and has a fix. anyways, I'm experiencing a serious battery drain where I charge my phone up to 100, unplug it in the morning, go to school and leave it in my pocket for 2 hours, and it ends up being 70-80% and the screen on time isn't even on the battery stats because I've barely used my phone to have it show up. As im typing this on my phone, ive even lost 2%. Is anyone experiencing something similar and is there a fix for this? At 33% now, according to the battery usage, cell standby is at the top of the list with 10% and screen on time is 25 minutes . Thanks so much
Please post some screenshots of battery stats and someone may be able to help

My phone is the same way. Even with the latest update that made cell standby way better where it sits at 1-3% my phone drains like crazy. It's been off the charger for 3 hours and 1 hour of screen on time and it's at 57%. They need a bigger battery in the s7.
Check to see if you have a VPN app installed, Firefox, Candy Crush (or other King app), or a weather app. Many use mdnsd that eats power. King apps send data all the time. And there may be some adware that you have that is eating power. Hope this helps...

Battery Drain
I have had the same problem. With the earlier update I had the issue with (what I consider) excessive drain caused by cell phone standby. With the latest update cell phone standby has taken a back seat to Android System. Here is a screenshot from today. As you can see Android System has more than twice the percentage of anything else. I reset the phone a couple of days ago but that had absolutely no effect. Went to a local Verizon store to complain which naturally went nowhere.

I did a factory reset in recovery wiped cache twice and rebooted I have had much better battery. 20-30% higher when I leave work. I also kept WiFi calling turned off not sure if that was the drainer.
So, I have noticed an increased drain on my phone's battery since the OTA 8.1 update. But these last few days it feels like it has been getting worse, even with battery saver mode on, no background activities and rooted Greenify. Today it drained 3% of battery in less than 25 minutes, battery saver on, no Wi-Fi n but not connected and mobile data off.
Somehow my old iPhone 5 has better battery life than this one. Also, the AccuBattery app I installed says the phone has already lost 10% of the battery's original capacity.
Am I the only one who has noticed this after the update? Have you guys felt that this has been happening as well, or am I just paranoid?
And do you happen to know any good apps for checking battery health besides AccuBattery?

Ok... Just stop for a second...
I learned a thing the past few years about Android...
Looking for battery... Actively... Usually sets you up for higher drain...
Do this...
Put everything back to stock... Then take out the stuff you'll never use... Like... WiFi/Bluetooth scanning (if you don't live in the city)... Turn Bluetooth off (if applicable)...
Then... Make sure you've trained everything... Like Ok Google... Then turn it off if you don't use it...
If you're not on Sprint... Disable anything Sprint related in apps... To make sure they don't receive the ON_BOOT intent...
Then... Don't reboot unnecessarily... You'll get better battery the longer the device is booted... To a point

Noticed that lately as well, resetting network setting fixed it for me YMMV
Just reset everything, also flashed back to 7.1.1
Just deciding now if I should sideload the 8.0 or OTA update to 8.1 already to see how it will respond. Will discard everything but the apps I commonly use
make sure you do not disable WiFi IF you have WiFi calling enabled... causes wakelocks during idle/sleep which drains battery.
I came here because I have a severe battery drain issue. Sometimes I can fix the issue by rebooting the phone and then not using it. This issue has been coming and going I think since android 10 but it may have occurred in android 9. I had this issue a few months ago and the issue stopped on its own. To workaround the issue I was rebooting the phone when I noticed the severe drain and then tried to avoid using the phone.
For example I charged my phone (pixel 1 XL) before I went to sleep. I charged it to about 85% at 11pm. I took it off charge and went to sleep. At 530am I woke and checked the phone to check the time. The battery was at 15% and in power saver mode.. Usually I get 1 day usage (6am to 6pm, with streaming music to my headphones at the gym and messaging throughout the day) and get home with 65% battery. This issue has come back again now that I am traveling abroad.
I reset the phone to factory yesterday and only installed webex teams and whatsapp. The issue persisted yesterday. At lunch, we spent around half an hour eating and the phone was screen off and on the table and the phone dropped from 65% to 55%. I decided to remove webex teams and reboot the phone. The battery remained at 53% for approx 2 hours. I thought eurika, webex teams is the culprit. But unfortunately last night the same battery drain issue occurred and I had to charge the phone again at 5am.
I dont know that the issue is occurring until it is occurring.
The battery usage shows no usage by apps during this issue, and same when I show all device usage - for example I'll have say webex teams using 1% and screen using 1% but the device has dropped 60% of battery and there is no indication of where.
I dont mind to install a custom rom but I have not done any custom installs on this phone at all at this point.
Also I never used NFC until a few months ago for the banking app which I used to have. I just realised NFC was on yesterday and I've just switched it off. I just wont know if this helps until later today when the battery is dropping quickly. Although it just dropped 2% while typing this so I dont think it has helped. I just turned on data saver and battery saver and will see.
I am at a bit of a loss - has anyone else had this problem and found the culprit or a fix?
Update - battery saver and data saver does not stop the battery drain. 2% drop in 20 minutes with phone on the desk with screen off.
I decided to give up, re-install webex teams and go for breakfast; while leaving nfc off, battery saver on and data saver on. At breakfast, the battery did not drop at all. Uptime is 9 hours 50 minutes (cant remember if I rebooted before breakfast) So almost 10 hours later and I have been using the phone over wifi on occasions and a few phone calls and whatsapp. The battery level is now 55% so it appears that the issue has gone away at the moment.
It's driving me nuts as I cannot work out a trigger. It almost seems like something within the android system is doing something and it's being hidden from the systems battery usage calculation. 3rd party apps also do not show any battery drain but the battery drains. If the battery was faulty then I would expect this issue to not get fixed after reboot (or even by itself). I have reset the phone 2 or 3 times now and the issue is still present afterwards.
Tried to google for answers and didnt really find anything apart from one guy saying his phone was draining and getting hot at the same time. Mine does not get hot.
I suspected malware or something like that but I dont see how it can be possible that malware is there after factory reset.
OK I think I have made some progress - although can't be sure because this issue does go away and then comes back! However, this time I am refusing to reboot my phone so I can work on it. I am flying back tomorrow at 4am and so I need battery to last as long as possible. I have installed all of my important apps that I need to use. Given the issue is there when I have only 2 apps, the issue cannot be related to the apps I removed so I installed all of the important ones.
What I have done now:
1. turned off dark mode
2. opened the app permissions for the "google" app and changed the location permission from "always" to "only while using the app".
GPS Location is always off unless I am using google maps anyway but it did not stop battery drain previously!
As soon as I changed the permission app for point 2 above, the severe battery drain stopped. Take a look at the screenshot. You can see the severe drain on the left of the graph. Then the very severe drain was when I Was actively using the phone during the issue. Then I charged the phone. Then I changed the permission and you can see the graph have a flat horizontal line which is showing next to zero battery drain! I do not have battery saver or data saver turned on anymore. And I have been using the phone a fair amount.
Touch wood and fingers crossed. May be this will also stop google from emailing me every month with a google map breadcrumb trail of where I have been going.
EDIT - uptime of the phone is 28 hours and counting. Although you can see the charging points in the screenshot.
I have the same issue. My battery was just recently replaced too. I'm going to try the suggestions in your latter posts and see if anything improves.
Hi, I'm experiencing a standby battery drain on my Xperia 5 III. I've just bought it, it's updated to A12, did a hard reset and software repair with Xperia companion. I lose around 1.5% per hour, around 12% per 8hours of sleep. Whether I have SIM popped in or not, GSam reports Mobile radio constantly working and it stops only if I turn airplane mode on.
I have Stamina mode on, 60Hz only, turned off mobile data always on in developer settings (although it shouldn't matter when SIM is out), smart connectivity is off, everything else I found that could be battery consuming I turned off.
Is there anything else I can do, besides flashing it again with Xperia companion? Or is this normal for this phone?
I suspect you're going to struggle to get a reply from someone that's performed this same test. My phone was charged to 90% 4.5h ago. I've used it for web browsing for about an hour since it was removed from the charger. I've never used Stamina mode. I have 120Hz display on. I use the Always On display with the clock and a graphic. Screen brightness is at 50%.
Battery is at 74%. I have done zero investigating about what has been draining the battery, as it strikes me as normal usage based on my experience with Xperia and Huawei phones.
I think you are right, the user base seems to be much smaller than I thought.
Luckily, my battery drain has improved, last night it drained only 0.90% per 7h of sleep, putting a SIM card in and turning Stamina off helped, it makes no sense but it fixed it. If I'm not wrong, as per GSam, my phone also went only into a deep sleep and never into light sleep, now it enters both.
I find that after a reset or an OS version update, the Xperia phones take a week or so to sort themselves out. I don't know if it's optimizing in the background or what. I have noticed this since my Z5, which I bought 5 years ago.
t an update today on my 5 III and after updating I have significantly better battery life and lower overall temps.

ive been using my xperia without a sim and the battery life is also terrible. i havent switched from my old phone yet.
is the battery life better on the android 12 update?
I can't comment on 11 vs 12 usages as I didn't use my phone on 11,only 12, but others already reported improved battery life on 12.
My battery life significantly improved after 2 weeks. I did recalibrate my battery, two times drained it to 0% and charged until 100%. I did apply all the battery-saving tips and tricks available and suspended whatever system apps I could. Depending on the usage, I could reach 7-9h hours SOT easily, probably even 10 with stamina turned on. Updates really helped this phone in every possible way. IDLE battery drain was the worse thing with it and now it varies from 0.20 to 0.70% per hour. Remember to close all the apps when you don't need them,.
In the developer options you can restrict the background processes. Had 4, now 3 selected.
My apps notify me reliably, I do not notice any difference, but the consumption in standby is only a third as high.
Everything else did not work for me.

Important, you have to set this Option after every reboot.
