Hi all,
I just finished writing the first version of TubeRun for Android. TubeRun is a London transport app that aims to present the most important data that TfL offers in a single app. My motivation for writing it was the low quality of similar apps found in the market. Typically they offer only a single important feature (eg a journey planner, a good map, bus departures) but they omit the others forcing you to install multiple apps which seldom work in a straightforward manner. In TubeRun, expect to find everything that matters so that you won't have to have 4 different similar apps installed. Features include:
-A Journey Planner that uses the TfL API for up-to-date travel plans
-Live Bus, Underground, Overground, DLR and Rail Departures
-Nearby Tube lines, Bus routes, Cycle Hire stations (with live bike/dock availability data), Rail stations, Oyster ticket shops
-Oyster Balance
-Underground Refund Claims
-The real Tube Map
-Favorites
-Current and Weekend Status Updates
-Fast ICS-inspired interface that doesn't rediscover the wheel

I plan to add more features, and I am posting this to request your feedback on what I should add/improve next.
TubeRun is by no means perfect, however I think that it works really well already. Please, let me know your thoughts on it so that I am able to effectively improve it. My current list of TODOs for the future is as follows:
Improve the UI of the main screen (icons are the way to go). (v1.2)
Add a station chooser that uses auto complete and the current user location to void scrolling. (v1.2)
Add the ability to deactivate the backgrounds (my photography skills are not up to the task) (v1.2)
Suggest National Rail stations in the Journey Planner. (v1.2.2)

and it looks very well polished. You can also set it up so that it takes you to a certain menu when you launch the app. So it could take you straight to Favourites or near by stations

Yes, Tube Chaser had by far the cleanest UI. I went for the ICS+background images layout which I personally like a lot (and it required quite a lot of effort to make it 'work'). What I do lack are some nice icons for the main screen, which I guess is what turns a lot of people off on the first look. As I am not a designer (I more or less suck at photoshop), I didn't want to use some 'not quite right' icons. So I went with labeled buttons. If any of you has a suggestion for a good (+free) ICS icon pack let me know.
What I want to implement for the next version is a quick picker for stations that relies on autocomplete/location and use it thoughout the app. The current version requires quite a lot of scrolling.
As for the "take me to a specific screen", it's indeed nice. However, I think this workflow (quick information peeks) is better satisfied with widgets (see below)

If that's the case, I pretty much prefer to launch the app, hit favorites and stay in the clean interface of the app. I thought about doing it for oyster balance, yet I prefer the current implementation that just requires me to launch the main app. Quering servers on the background periodically or getting your location (thus depleting your battery) is something I want to avoid.

Take me to specific screen would be handy as when I use it on tubechaser, where ever I am, I would like to see nearest stations first. Its worth having I think

The only thing I dont like about tubechaser is that it doesnt have departure widgets. Isnt this one of the benefits of Android, having widgets?

I only use the widgets and never the app. All I need to do is hit refresh on my homescreen and that is it. Im sure you can have that the widget doesnt always update unless manually done on the screen?
I've just downloaded this and love its features. On first impressions, it looks like it's going to become my new main Tube app! The only criticisms I have with it are:
1. To reiterate what others have said about the UI on the front page - I think that some nicer looking buttons wouldn't go amiss;
2. I have two Oyster cards linked to my online account, the first of which was lost a long time ago and has a zero balance. Until there's the option to choose which card to show in the app (or TfL let you delete old cards off of their online service), the Oyster balance feature could be useless to a lot of people.

Yep, I am aware of this and I added it to my todos. For the time being, I am pretty sure that you can erase cards from your online profile. The option may be burried somewhere but I remember doing it a couple of months ago and then fixing a relevant bug in the app.

i mostly use buses and not all bus stops are available yet (app's saying so). on the bus time table not only how many minutes left but also an arrival time information would be nice. and to be honest background photos distract me. i'm telling this to you as a user, who has tried many these kind of apps and to help you to understand what a user wants from a bus tracking app.

I am using the 'Bus stop locations' dataset released by TfL here. It may be slightly out of date (eg released last year) but I wasn't aware of any stops/lines missing. Thanks for bringing this up. I will update the description to mention this. Are these missing stops available in other apps?

I am not sure that I understand you here. Do you mean "the next bus arrives in 13.49" instead of "in three minutes"? Or maybe "buses on route 49 arrive normally every 12 minutes"? As for the second dataset (sceduled bus frequency), I do not know if it is available somewhere (and I do not think it is particullarly useful given that live information is available).

Yep, others have told me that one before (while others quite like them). If more people feel strong against them I will deactivate them. For the time being, I think that they give a unique touch to the app.
Maybe adding a background configuration in the settings to allow users to chose either blank or image background. On/Off toggle basically. I'm about to try this app, judging by the video it seems packed with features so I'm looking forward to having it. The oyster card thing looks good, I don't want to waste time checking at the station all the time or hoping I have enough.
The buses section doesn't work very well. Maybe a compass would help to understand which way is which. I guess we can use the journey planner if we are stuck somewhere. On my road the local bus is only shown as one direction. The tube part is good though, haven't tried the oyster card thing yet.
I use BusCount for bus information, it's pretty good, maybe you would want to look at that to see how they get all the information. Just a suggestion since it's spot on.

Bus number is 462. It shows two buttons but both say "Departures not available. This is Tfl service so be patient". I presume that means it's a problem on their system. It works for other bus routes.

Shifu
Shifu is a popular Indian-made productivity and task management app that observes how a users uses their phone and reminds them about all the tasks that need to be done. The app has been developed by Deepansh Jain, Michael Massey and Prashant Jain. Instead of you having to set specified time for your specified tasks, Shifu alerts you when you might have the free time to complete a particular task. It has wi-fi based, phone call based, and location based alerts integrated into it. So far, Shifu has 50k downloads on the app store.
One of the big upsides of using an Android phone is the sheer scope of customisation that is available to users. Rooting your phone and choosing a completely different version of the operating system isn't hard, but otherwise there is a whole laundry list of apps that can change everything from the way your phone looks to the way it works.
Shifu, by Delhi-based The Signals, is one such app, which lets you outsource the job of remembering what's important and when to do it. The app keeps running in the background and tracks how you're using your phone. It also requires access to your phone's calendar. So it knows, for example, that at 9AM every day, you're traveling from home to office, and it knows that you're going to take half an hour to get there.
Shifu is a personal assistant app, which helps you record reminders with respect to time, place and some activities.

Here are some use cases for the app –
General time based reminders – Remind me to call mom/dad/girlfriend at 7:00 pm every day.
Location based reminders – Say you’re visiting a cafe for the first time and you really like it, you can set a reminder to remind you of this place the next time you’re in it’s vicinity.
Activity based – Currently, you can set reminders based on networks you’re connected to (WiFi, 3G etc) or when you’re on a call with someone.
In the process, Shifu does something obnoxious as well – it displays these reminders on your phones home screen. I hate that, but it is definitely one the most effective way of reminding me.
Another reminder app?
I might be a little biased against reminder apps; I still don’t think a disorganized person will become organized because of a reminder app. It is a mindset problem of not caring for the more mundane but necessary tasks of life. These tasks pile up and your life becomes a mess (trust me, I know).
The homescreen reminder display
However, a nag, who holds you accountable has been the closest to getting me responsible and organized. I get the same feeling with Shifu. For things that I haven’t attended to, it makes sure that I know about it with it’s homescreen reminder. It’s ugly, but at least it gets me back into the app to get rid of the reminder notification. Sometimes, I even do the tasks that it reminds me to do.
Pros:
The biggest pro with Shifu is that it has realized what it takes disorganized guys like me to take it seriously. Apart from this, it is feature rich and some of the activity based reminder options are pretty cool and I hope more activities are integrated with Shifu. For example, reminder on using an app excessively (game/social media etc) would be a neat feature.
Cons:
The app is data and sensor intensive and there is a visible drop in battery performance that I’ve experienced since I installed the app. However, this is something that the app developers might want to be wary of. Furthermore, if there was a prettier way of displaying notifications on the homescreen, it would be greatly appreciated.

So I did some searching on the forum and noticed that its been a long time since anyone mentioned a weather app of any kind. Its been at least a year since the last mention, so I thought I would bring mine up.
My app is called F-Chops WeatherPod. Its a full featured weather app with all the same usual stuff as everyone else. I don't put my weather info on top of a pretty picture like Yahoo does, I don't have a lot of money to back it like The Weather Channel does. What I do have is a smart ass remark with each forecast, and the Stinkin' Badges check in game.
I put in over 200 smart ass remarks, and depending on the current weather it will randomly pull one up with the forecast. You don't get "its ****ing hot outside" when its snowing like another app I know does. Some of the remarks do contain adult language, but not all.. I'm just sayin.. but nothing too over the top or tasteless. More for humor and effect.
The Stinkin' Badges check in game allows you to earn points and unlock badges. Think of the old FourSquare check ins, only these unlock depending on the current weather, as well as a few other special cases. It's a way to engage the user into the app and make checking the weather interesting, if not even fun. Weather apps are typically as boring as the weather, and I try to change that.
The forecasts are fast and accurate, you can check the weather for anywhere in the world, the interface is simple and clean.

Hi everyone.
I'm announcing a brand new, modern weather app called All Clear (play store link). I looked at the top ten free weather apps in the US and was dismayed at how awful (and identical!) they all are. All Clear is my attempt at making the best weather app in the store.
Major things that are different compared to other weather apps:
Focus on clear communication of weather data: I've used large graphics with animations so you can easily see the weather quickly. No clutter or BS.
I'm upset that most weather apps that show the current weather conditions get even that wrong, so a major component of this app is self-correcting the outdoor conditions by weighing user weather reports and showing the most up-to-date and local weather conditions.
I want to advance how useful phones are for measuring the atmosphere. This app includes cutting edge research that you can participate it, such as sending in live weather pictures for analysis and tagging, as well as automatically contributing device environmental sensor data for similar purposes.
We'll eventually use machine learning / classification algorithms to start automatically tagging weather in pictures. That's the big idea here really. I'd like to make a system that can take any outdoor photo and assign weather information to it, so the app starts with a manual tagging system. Will be expanded in the future.
We plan to make virtual weather stations with anonymized pressure, temperature, light, humidity and magnetic sensors inside Android phones
The Sensor stuff in this app is open source! Here is the GitHub repo. It may be possible to open source the rest of the app in the future.
'Watch this Hour' is a new feature that lets you track how the forecast has changed since you started 'watching' it.
It also has all the other features you'd expect from a decent weather app: widgets for the upcoming hours, multiple optional notifications to stay informed throughout the day, including Severe Alerts
Some notes:
The app is US-only right now and I hate that. For the first 2 months of building this app I was specially making it to be global, international weather data. I was prepared to spend $400 USD/month and buy weather data from IBM/Weather Channel, and I wrote the whole app just for that purpose. Then, without notice, they cut off the data plans, turned off the payment form at Weather Underground, and refused to take any money for weather data. They make you wait weeks for a phone call and then you figure out that the price is something like $3,000 / month to match the same basic features.
So for those reasons, this app is US-only right now, using free data available from NOAA/NWS. I will be making it available internationally in the future, once I find and integrate a reasonable data source for international weather data. I am likely to use OpenWeatherMap but we'll see.
