Launcher for elderly people? - Android General

Hello together,
there are different launchers intending to make it easy for elderly people to use an android smartphone.
The german customer protection organisation Stiftung Warentest checked four of them (Asina, BIG, Large, Nova) in 2017 and came to the conclusion not to recommend any of them:

There is a Samsung Galaxy J3 combined with a simple looking launcher which is not transferable to any other smartphone:

Thomas Slavicek in December 2014 announced here the very interesting launcher Koala
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-koala-phone-launcher-simple-phone-t2977253
but apparently lost interest in it
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...la-phone-launcher-simple-phone-t2977253/page6
The free test version (test period 7 days) and the gold version (~ 5 Euro) of Koala are still available in the Google Play Store but apparently there isn´t any support or further development any more.
How difficult is it to develop such an easy launcher?
Thank you in advance!
Druide_07

Hello,
I would be interested in collaborating with someone to design and build a launcher for elderly people. Maybe even a skin or whole ROM eventually.
I have been trying to configure an Android phone for my mother who is in her mid-seventies and lives alone. She sometimes presses the wrong button to turn off wi-fi which worries her and and us. Or enables Talkback making the phone unusable. It actually difficult to disable some of these features (such as the swipe down menu).

Android - Phones and Tablets

Hi guys,
Recently I made the change from Windows 7 to Android for my primary phone and Tim_H changed from iOS to Android. I've got all my accounts set up and performed some basic customisation, but I'm very interested to hear from the Android users on the Community what I should set-up next and how!
When you get a device, what do you download/setup first? Any amazing apps that I really need to get? I'm a big fan of widgets, rather than just application links and I know Tim is too. What are some great widgets to play with?
I downloaded Locale as one of my first paid apps and I've got to say, I love it! Having the different profiles for work/home/everywhere else is awesome. There is also a huge variety of plug-ins to expand the features.
Can't wait to hear your suggestions
Cheers, Bart.

[Q] Guidance for a Family with multiple Android Devices

Hello Members !
I am a long time lurker here, a year or so now since I bought my I9300. Thanks for everything. Made an account for my specific problem. Anyhow now that I have an account I hope to be more active here and share what I've learnt and learn some more along the way
My dilemma is the upcoming androidization, so to speak, of my household. I have a I9300, and I will be buying two more Androids for my parents by the end of October just before Diwali (Indian Festival, like Christmas in the sense that lots of shopping and of course victory of good over evil yada yada yada)
So, first question, my aim is to have some sort of sync between the devices in the neighborhood of the following, just to give you an idea,
1) Dynamic Shopping Lists - You know like if the three of us could update it from our own respective devices. Something my parents can use too. I can handle a fairly high amount of complexity but they cant so please keep that in mind while helping me out. I was thinking of making a new common Google ID and using Google keep as a common cloud notebook ? Has anyone tried this ? Any other suggestion ?
2) Communication between us - Like I now know Whatsapp can be used with Wifi at home, and 3G outside, Skype too the same way I suppose, any other apps you know of ? I am the geek in my home as I said but I cannot expect the same out of my parents. They are totally new and unexposed to smartphones , let alone android. One of them uses Nokia N8 , the other has a sorry excuse for a smartphone based on S40 , the Nokia C2. So you see, uncomplicated apps would be nice, even the ones I could check on or setup from time to time but requiring minimal effort from their side.
3) Photo Sharing (Even Video if possible but not a necessity) - I know ! Facebook. But what you don't know is that they are not and will not get on social networking sites anytime soon if at all, so any suggestions as to how to get them to share stuff easily with me and among themselves ?
Face to face we have NFC and Wifi Direct ( Sorry I am from Sammy background , I think other androids all it Android beam ? ) but when apart , sharing options through WIFI / 3G/ 2G , app suggestions please ??
Second question, some specific uses, how would you harness the power of android if your whole family was using Androids , even the same model if need be
1) Some family specific Apps ? I found a few on Google play but I sincerely would like recommendations. Base requirements is nothing too high fi , even the most basic app would suffice, location tracking and all that is nice , though even if I get an app that just is a simple glorified diary even then it could work, it just has to be a little polished and easy to use.
2) How do I keep control over all these phones? I am sure the parents will take time to learn it fully. So maintenance tasks ? Example - Do I make a new Google ID for the family as such and then handle the updating and installation of apps from there ? For the future too, they would require another phone each and 2 tablets. So Around the middle of next year, I would be unofficial "tech support" for 5-6 phones and at least 2 tablets. What would you recommend me to start with so that I don't face problems down the line ?
And finally , the last question, What FUN can I have with more than one devices in my home and what about them ?
1) Age specific apps ? Any of you who have older parents and have seen that they prefer using some apps , please let me know !
2) What phones should I buy ?
My mother is sold on the NOTE 2 ( Note 3 if the price is right when it comes in a few days now), mostly because of the stylus , she thinks making notes and shopping lists as I mentioned above would be easier for her on the NOTE with the stylus, rather than a keyboard. Any better suggestions ? Dad likes something stylish and I was thinking HTC ONE , there is only one drawback , that is the lack of a extendable storage , he is someone who really keeps on recording stuff from TV and makes me digitize those songs / programs / what not so I am thinking of getting him a 64 GB card and see an old man wonder with amazement that he can carry practically the whole nine seasons of X Files in his pocket So I thought maybe S4 /S3 or Note 2/ Note 3 as it happens. I would upgrade my own phone too, keeping this S3 as my secondary and finally putting the N958GB , my current back up, to the deep sleep in my footlocker along with my previous phones , yes, somehow I cant seem to make my heart to get rid of my old tech stuff , even have a Riva TNT 2 lying in there.
If you think that buying same model for all three of us would help in automation that would be acceptable too. Or you could suggest a nice cocktail of models if you think that would better suit me. I really want to get them to experience Android so I really would appreciate all the help you could provide. Any Ideas as to what all stuff they can and I can use android for in our daily lives as a family would be appreciated too.
Thank for reading guys, looking forward for the replies Cheers! :good:

I use "HomeBudget with Sync" app. It is different from other budgeting apps because one can create a group in it. Members of the family can each install it on their devices and join the group. So each member can add his/her expenses and incomes, and the budget can be calculated and reviewed for the whole family!
Thanks a lot. It solves many things. A few more questions...
1.Anything to talk/text/video over the hjome wifi network amongst ourselves other than skype ? I am able to use skype but any alternatives would do.
2. How to set up Any.do for multiple members ? So that each can edit and view tasks ?
Thanks a ton, once again :good:

[App][4.0+] Koala Phone Launcher: Simple phone interface for older people

Hello, I would like to introduce you our new app: Koala Phone (koalaphone.com)
Download on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koalaphone.silver
Help us translate Koala Phone to your language: https://crowdin.com/project/koala-phone-senior-launcher
It is a simple Android launcher, designed for seniors and people with vision problems. The interface looks like a classic feature phone with hardware buttons. If your parents still use these old Nokia phones, maybe it’s time for them to try something new
Main features:
large QWERTY keyboard for SMS messages, or classic phone keypad
touch-optimized apps: simplified camera, photo viewer, alarm clock and a flashlight
text can be enlarged, buttons have a vibration feedback
speech recognition for SMS messages, and text-to-speech support
Koala Phone is great for all the people who want to browse photos, use camera and other smart features, but do not want to fight with their phone.
An article about our research (Designing a mobile interface for older people): http://bit.ly/koala-medium
We are looking forward to all your feedback!
Koala Phone is available for free (you can unlock some paid features after 7-day trial, but you can still make calls or send messages, even with the free version).
I hope this post does not violate any community guidelines; similar Necta or Apex launcher has also a free and paid version. If this is a problem, I apologize...
Not good enough need more enchantment
Hello, what do you mean by more enchantment?
We are preparing a new update with possibility to change the color theme, or set the background image.
Hello. Im using this launcher now. Is this diaplay normal? Please see attached image pls.
Sent from my ALCATEL ONE TOUCH 6030X using XDA Free mobile app
The image should not be definitely that blurry. I have just checked our code and everything seems to be OK...
Is your display resolution really 960x540 px? Did you changed your DPI or other params in your phone?
Dear Tomas,
I was changing a smartphone to a senior phone and realized that there is a new launcher called Koala. I would say that the market absolutely needs a proper senior launcher app, and I am talking with an experience as a grandson who change 4-5 smartphones into a senior phone, sadly by paying huge amount of money for BigLauncher.
I would be happy to provide you a feedback also in more detail if you are interested in, but at the first stage, I would like to comment and if you wouldn't mind, point out certain issues for me. But before that I should say that I am very impressed with the launcher. It absolutely has a good touch and one of the best among others (consider that I probably tried 15-20 different launchers ):
1- Language! Sadly the current version supports only English and Czech. Yet we would like to have it in every possible languages. Sadly my grandparents cannot understand English very well.
2- Call directly through phonebook or favorites: For eyes that have been worked for many years, it may be hard to write an SMS. So I would definitely like for my grandparent, a phone book which calls directly the contact that is selected without pushing more buttons.
3- A home screen, with phonebook icon, dialer icon, and favorite contacts.
I believe at least first two is necessary for me and felt obliged to write, despite the fact that I am mostly a lurker on xda.
I wish you a pleasant day!
Hello, thank you for your kind words!
1 - Which language do they talk? We plan to add new languages soon, but we wanted to finish the app first.
2 - This is a great idea! I can add a new item into the settings, so you will be able to choose it.
3 - We will think about it... But currently the home screen is the dialer (so the launcher looks like a classic phone). Favorite contacts and other contacts are combined on one screen; this combination was more understandable for users, than two different screens.
If you need any help for translation, I can do the french freely
[EDIT]
In my opinion, the only missing things are an azerty keyboard option, and a clearer icon for the contacts app on the home screen
Anyway, realy nice job!
Awesome, I found a great launcher for my dad. :good::good::good:
hh amazing idia , nice video good job !:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
Hello, thank you for your support!
We plan to localize Koala Phone to other languages.
I will prepare a registration on some website for collaborative translations. We will be glad if you help us with translation of your language
Thank you!
OK, you can try to upload your translations here: https://crowdin.com/project/koala-phone-senior-launcher
I hope I have set up everything correctly.
Thanks a lot!
Indian languages not in list :/
I'm currently evaluating its use for my Dad.
Wish list to be able to customize the menu:
Add custom applications directly to the menu (for example Viber, Skype etc.), instead of having to wade through another sub menu.
Being able to change the order of items in the menu & ability to add buttons to directly call a couple of numbers. (I know, a bit of redundancy, with this being available in contacts, but still, a nice to have feature)
Change the look & feel of the home page - retain the old school dialer, but being able to specify a background image at the top, change to analog clock etc.
Each person has their own requirements. Having flexibility would increase the overall appeal.
I wouldn't mind paying for the Gold version if it brings this level of flexibility/customization.
How do I add a new language to the crowdin project?
Thanks for the great app,
Jp
Hello, thank you for your message!
We plan to add more customization options: image backgrounds (wallpapers), and also configurable menu items.
What language do you want to add to the Crowdin? I have already added a Hindi language.
Really nice app, installed it on my dads phone. Easier to use.
Could I maybe help translating it? Dutch translation.
Apologies overlooked the crowdin link.

I've started with German.
Thanks for developing this launcher! My grandmother will be pleased! I'll be helping out with the Simplified Chinese translation.
like it,
During my testing noticed my contacts with multiple numbers only showing one number (using CM12)
Aussie/UK English translation ? my Nanna would of complained about "color" being spelt "wrong"
feature request.
read out the number\button you press, so dont need to switch on the full talkback.
cheers
MM
Really liked this phone launcher.
Clean ui and everything is big and easy on the eyes.
Great job!
Typed on my Xperia Z3 while underwater.

Open source app development

Hi guys.. first of all i'm new to android dev and this forum. so excuse me for any mistake.. The reason im posting here is i had an idea for an app i always felt need about and couldnt find on play store. I call it irevise.
Its a simple notes making app for students(yes there are many) but with a change. A homescreen widget with additional features to make it easy and convenient to revise/memorise the study material. am studying myself and so had started this project.. have got it into a decent app as of now for my use but there are many additional features to be added, and due to lack of time/expertise/funds i may never complete them all.. so came up with the idea of opensource. Ive released it under Apache license 2.0 on sourceforge. sourceforge.net/projects/irevise/
Invite you all to come and develop together to make this into a cool app
Am providing brief info below for anyone intrested..
Description
Well we all sweat trying to learn those nasty chemical formulae, or the weird biological names or maybe some antonyms and synonyms.Whatever it is anything which can make us learn our books better is just a boon. And when it happens automatically, its just amazing. This little appdoes exactly that. Now quickly make your own small notes for things you feel are difficult to learn.Save in the tiny I revise app,and add the widget. And it makes the notes available on your home screen so they cross your eyes every time you unlock your phone. And they get changed automatically so you get them all... Simple huh? Yes but very effective!! And with so many exciting features lined up it could end up as a really awesum tool.. So why waiting, lets code it !!
Features
Quick Revision Tool For students
Supports android 2.3+
Homescreen Widget (Auto Updating)
Backup/Restore Notes (to be added )
Share Notes (to be added)
Study Circle (to Be added)
Inviting everyone to work on the features mentioned and any extras which may be useful.. Also haven't been able to publish on play store as my old account was suspended by google(dunno why) and i dont have an additional card.. so apk also available there only...
its a nice oppurtunity especially for newbies like me to improve our sills, work as a team and get a useful app built in the process.. the biggies can always practice and show off their skills too

Hi, I discovered now that I accidentally named the 2nd version of the keyboard after someone’s trademark. I immediately renamed to the previous name (which I checked now as well for registered trademark) I apologies it wasn’t on purpose by any means. I had two versions of the keyboard so far - the first one was EffectedKeyboard, the second one is just EffectedKeyboard2 from now on. If you encounter any violations on my side or on the side of EffectedKeyboard and its derivatives, please let me know. I take them very seriously and try to fix them much before anyone tell me about them.
Many thanks,
Yours

Ahola! Gang, I updated description and added my personal story additionally. When will I see your comments??
Has anyone from here tried the app? Still long time after submitting the post no response.
I updated the description along with some screenshots. If you haven’t checked the app, please do so. Looking for your feedback.

EffectedKeyboard2 is based on Open Source.
So first of all, thanks for commenting.
What do you need its source for though? Menny’s source is available online under Apache License.
Mine you can deserialize if you’re looking for suspicious behavior, etc. to see that there is no weird-weirdo stuff is going on. You just won’t be able to recompile it, but yet once again I don’t want people to take a ride on my success in future and publish versions of my keyboard with stuff like key-loggers and other sh** that collects data. If you look carefully, you’ll realize that no one could even actually install it outside of play store. Why. Once again because it’s been gone through enormous trials to be unsuccessfully pirated and be uploaded to 3rd party stores.
If you’re looking for EffectedKeyboard2 source code as a friend, just to fork and add some features, then there’s a way to get what you want.
Generally speaking there’s an option to drop me a ping from within the app. Once we talk, I’m always open to hear new requests and if you saw the comments, tens of users got the features they wanted and they sort of like the fact that they can just “ask and get” what they want.
It’s not that I charge anything from anyone of them. It’s more of utilizing the capabilities of what is possible rather than going violent into something illegal or doing something forcefully planned as being perceived intolerable. For those cases there are indeed lots of suitcases, lots of jailbroken devices (where people’s credit cards disappear…) and many people who just live in this circle of hate.
My keyboard is based on Anysoftkeyboard, legally, I also spoke to Menny a couple of times. He’s a great guy and a great engineer.
Anything that is in the grey area, or sort doesn’t have clear answers right away get very very shortly fixed just right away, once something in that manner appears.
And if you’d like to have a good read and understand whom’s whom, there is an About section inside the app, which is literally an About section if that makes sense. I mean there is actually an informative information inside there.
Does it sound quite good to you?

Why you replayed in that's bad way i didn't said anything in wrong! I just asked to you if your project is have an open-sourced like Menny i really want to fork for my personal using and adding some new features like new emojis from Android 12L or create more themes to main app or adding new languages to the available list inside the app itself nothing else but you were talked to my N' you think I'm the theft or bad guy to steal you work NO absolutely you are fault about me because I'm not the app developer and donn know anything about hacking or something One of the accusations you made against me without knowing who I was. It was very sadness word's for me. I'm sorry I bothered you I asked you to the source code in a nice way but you rejected by the bad way that's so strange IDK why you call me a PIRATE!!
Dear @GorranKurd, I understand there’s most probably been a language barrier.
First of all, under no circumstances I referred to you as a pirate. I assumed you wanted some features (and if you translate my reply to your favourite language you’ll see that as well: ) I suggested you to drop me a ping, and simply ask for the list of features that you want, especially when I do that literally for free of charge. And so I did to all of my users who’s been asking.
As of piracy, and the part you are referring to: I said that there are malicious users over the internet against whom I have defense. They add Internet permissions and other (as I referred to sh** stuff) unwanted behavior to ANY kind of software — not only keyboards. They they steal both mine and YOUR data and credentials. Referring to the same sentence, I’ve added that you CAN and MIGHT WANT TO and IT’S OKAAAAAY and welcomed to decompile my code and see that there is literally NO unwanted behavior or any intention for such. Since you realize that it’s like, I mean… A keyboard. People type passwords and credit card numbers with it. I said you simply won’t be able to recompile it back.
I hope that now it makes a little bit of more sense.
I realize that I tried to sound as much clear as possible and put many details, but please understand that others will read it too and they’ll simply want to be informed on as much many details in message as possible.. As of yourself, would you like to drop me a ping? Via email for instance? That way I’ll be able to explain anything in more personal way, without being worried about the rest of the community who reads the messages and of course to work with you on the new features (you mentioned new smilies, themes and languages). You’ll literally be able to command on anything you want . I welcome you to read the comments on the app in the Play Store to see how others enjoyed the process. And no, 99% of them are not friends and family, those are people whom I came across the Internet just like you .
Does it sound better now?
Please let me know if anything else still sounds offensive, or bad, etc. As you might have already understood there were no such intentions.
[EDIT: I didn’t succeed to quote twice in a row, so I hope you’ll see this. I hope you won’t remain with the negative impression you’ve got.]

Bro, you misunderstood me. I asked for your code to make more improvements and adding new features because it has a simple and beautiful interface that only contains the necessary things that are necessary for the user for typing you nailed it that you removed the Files & Storage and contacts permissions are no required to work app, So and I think it's good enough to have only one permission which is vibration control and other Google Play Billing is okay and safe permission! because of that i like to use your for daily using and typing it's smaller size with important options and I think is much better than the original one!

Hiiiii
I’m so glad I don’t sound like a monster anymore!!
I understood you are asking for the code to make improvements, I simply tried to cover as much topics as possible in a single message.
My keyboard is based on open source, but it’s not open source. I was talking about an option to drop me an email since it’s much more convenient to talk about such things there.
As of improving the keyboard, we will find a way to improve it in a way that’ll work for both of us.
It’s not open source as you might have understood, it’s based on open source.
Would you like talk about the things you’d like to add? Do you use it?
May I ask you where you from? What languages you’d like to add?
If you really want to code, then at least the themes are pluggable. You can upload them to the store and use them inside the keyboard.
If you ask me, many Menny’s users were trying to improve his keyboard and just gave up because it’s TONS over TONS of code. I wouldn’t say that helping for free does worth the hustle.
And that’s why I’m offering working on what you want together - you have the keyboard, so just ask me what you want, I’ll deliver and you’ll have it on your keyboard 100% usable and what you don’t like you can simply ask for changes, even 1000 times.
But you really don’t have to code new features for me for free. I plan to earn money with that keyboard one day, so why would you work for free for whilst someone is getting paid.. I mean I would hire you, but I don’t have how to pay you.. And allowing you to work for free (since again it’s going to be a commercial product) is sort of a bad sense. If someone helps me I want to give back, but I cannot give back for someone who’s coding for me.
You are able to command and tell me that this this and this suck or excellent and you want this this and this. And those are the sort of things that I’ve been doing with other users.
Does it sound cool?
Like I’d like to clarify: people like you who ask for new features from me, who know what they want to see are pure gold for me. I mean I’m searching for such opportunities all the time. So I wouldn’t like for that to be missed.
And thank you so much for describing what you like in the keyboard!!!!!! I analyze the things that people describe from time to time and learn many lessons from those descriptions.
You rock! So would you like to make a list of the things you wanted to add and improve?
Would that work for you btw?

Hello again dear @vitalipom haha no no you are a good man and smart at same time, first of all sorry about my bad English and misspelling because it's not my native language!
I'm a translator and added my language Kurdish to the Menny AnySoftKeyboard from an early version i think was 10 years ago when i started to translate the app interface and then a learned to create a language pack to AnySoft till 2020 i just used the mennys keyboard as my default keyboard but they occurred some issues and bugs that caused the program to crash and freeze on screen you may knew that bug! Because of that i stopped use that keyboard and replaced by Samsung Keyboard after the Sam team was added my language to the Sam Keyboard on OneUI 3.1, After two or more years in the past month i tried to test AnySoft again an notices that the bug was fixed .. And then about your keyboard i saw an old issue on AnySoftKeyboard that you put you forked version on the replay comment and i found yours by that way I installed and loved it's cool and simple nice ui/ux but i looked to my language Kurdish it was not there because of that i search on the net and google takes me to here XDA ... So I have a lot questions and i wana help you if you wanted too i can create new language pack for my language and you include in your app also i have and old forked version of menny main project that i created to many cool themes and so on..

I would LOVE to get your help!! Thank you
As of Kurdish apparently you can install it, I’ll just have to add it to the main UI. Generally, simply install Menny’s Keyboard Kurdish language pack - the one that’s in the Google Play Store that works with Anysoftkeyboard and it’ll work right away.
So first, let’s see that Kurdish works for you.
And then we can try to see what else you’d like to have in the keyboard. But first let’s make sure you have a nice set up keyboard you can have for your daily usage .

@GorranKurd Did you happen to succeed installing Kurd on my keyboard? You just install Menny’s one (for Anysoftkeyboard) and it works for Effectedkeyboard2 the same way as well.
I know it’s not under Languages in Effected Key, but I’ll add it there later as well.
If you could drop me a direct message, I’d send something small and nice for you as well. (It’s a surprise.)
Let me know when you happened to be here around .
