Recommended launcher?? - Other Tools & General Discussion

Hi all, new to this groups as I've only last night paid for and installed AppRadioUnchainedRootless and from what I've tried to do to get my phone mirrored, ARUR is simple to use and amazing!
Was just looking for personal favourites or recommendations to a different launcher? I've downloaded Apex and Nova, both pretty cool! Only issue I'm having Is I find the icons really small on my SPH DA120, even the same on the normal samsung standard os (Samsung s8)
Does anyone know a way or suggestions to get icons bigger?
I've seen YouTube videos and the icons and text seem to be a nice manageable size! I've tried options on my phone, thinking about it, haven't tried options when I've got my phone linked up to my headunit.. suggestions, personal favourites, tips appreciated

GOOD themes/apps/things to make the UI "prettier"??

Please realize I also have not gotten the courage to try and root it yet haha. Anyway, I was wondering if there were any apps or widgets out there that gave the phone more options to customize it? Such as changing the colors of boxes when you highlight them, different "skins"(the 3 you can download from HTC are pathetic), etc?
Also, anything to customize the battery/LED notification? I downloaded one but it wanted full accessibility...and it was just a pretty little battery widget that changed colors. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
Go launcher ex, and any other launcher, there pretty useful

[Q] Looking for a good launcher that isn't a launcher

Hi folks, I'm looking for what I'd call a "launcher". But I DON'T want a Sense-Replacement like ADW, SPB Shell or things like that. I'm looking for a WIDGET that allows me to place app shortcuts. Like Multicon. Unfortunately, Multicon has only 1x1 to 1x4 vertical widgets, but no horizontal ones. I need a horizontal one because I want to be able to put more apps on the screen - on a Sense-Screen, there's only 16 shortcuts possible, but you could easily fit 25 with even larger icons. Can you recommend any widget? Performance is quite important for me. Don't need background picture and scrollable content or stuff like that. Just a plain launcher that allows for more icons than Sense would. And the icons have to be large enough - 1/4th of the normal icon size is too small.
Have you looked at circle launcher
I might have the wrong idea, but maybe elixir (in market) may be useful. Has a range of sizes (1*4, 4*1 etc.) allowing for a large number of apps/switches to be placed on home screens.

Wave launcher is awesome imo. I use it daily and I use it with all launchers (I swap launchers). It takes about a week to get used to. But after that, It's smooth sailing.
You say you don't want a Launcher
Even though you say you don't want a Launcher, you should look at LauncherPro... I use it with 9 down by 5 across easily (Could probably do 6 across) which gives my 45 icons on one screen. Isn't that what you are looking for? You just choose the number of rows and columns you want in the options.
I turn off labels since they aren't needed.
Wave launcher for me also

Yes, and I think its quite good, but it doesn't allow for very many icons. 8 will still look fine, but that's about the upper limit. Plus, its cumbersome that you have to tap twice - once to open the circle and once to select the app. It doesn't react instantly.

Yes, but Elixir has like ten thousand other features that I don't need/want, so it's like Bloatware in my case. I had tried it weeks ago, but I don't think the icons were any good at all. Too small. Maybe I missed something?
Thanks also for the suggestions about WaveLauncher. I tried that, but it doesn't really work well for me. When I'm on the homescreening, I'm always turning around the Sense screens instead of opening the wave.
Any other suggestions?
try wave, circle launcher, quickdesk, widgetlocker (set it as longpress search key), swipepad, powerstrip, more icons... those come to mind.
Hope that helps.
Hi Firefall
I'm in the same situation as you! The one I'm using now (after some searching) is Launch-X. They have the free and paid version. If aesthetic is not key, and you don't need more than 5 shortcuts per roll (this is ideal I think, not too small, but better than 4 per roll which I think is too sparse), free version is good enough I think.
In fact, Launch-X can go to the next 5 shortcuts (it comes with left-right buttons). If used on launcher which allow scrolling, you only need to swipe.
I combine it with Folder Organiser (this type has aplenty to choose from) which can group various apps into a folder (e.g. System, Apps, Games, Multimedia, etc.). So, now I have 5 folder shortcuts (in Launch-X) on my Sensation desktop, and each shortcut opens up another 10-20 apps. I find this two steps acceptable for a clean desktop.
Alternatively, you can consider Swipepad, which I'm using for quick access (esp to switch off my Sensation) in whichever app I'm currently running. Another alternative you can consider is Smart Taskbar.
Didn't Folder Organizer do this? You can also do it with Extended Controls.

Good point.. I think for such nested folder feature, you need the paid version of Folder Organiser. I haven't tried it yet.
If you're looking for a very simple launcher, You can download this :
simplehome
it was on the market, I worked on it for translation.
Here is a screenshot
apk is just right here

Thanks a lot for the APK, I couldn't find it on the market. I will try it soon. It takes up the whole screen though, right?
Folder organizer also looks somewhat useful, but I'm not sure if it is what I want. Will also try that. Extended controls doesn't really look like a launcher from the market screenshots, do you actually use it as a launcher?
@leyvatron: I've tried SwipePad, that's not what I want, it should be on the homescreen as a widget. PowerStrip seems to be similar to it. The QuickDesk concept however looks interesting. Thanks for that! Also, WidgetLocker MIGHT be a good alternative for the Sense lockscreen.
@Sian: Thanks for sharing your experience with Launch-X. I tried it and it seems quite good, the free is too limited in my opinion. But it comes closest to what I'm looking for so far when configured appropriately.
Personally I just create a folder on my homescreen using GoLauncher, works great for the task you are trying to accomplish!!
i, a newbie and cant find anything on how to install a launcher, no matter what i do it goes back to sense, im swithing between using home switch.....help please.

[Q] How to create home screens, themes, etc?

Hello all,
New to the forums and I'm pretty much a complete newb to smart phones as well (I haven't had a cell phone in close to 5 years lol). Anyway, got a Galaxy S2 a couple weeks ago, started wondering about customization, etc and ran into this site.
Looking at some of the home screens you guys come up with, they are amazing.
But, I honestly have no idea where to start to make my own. Do I need to root my phone to do this stuff? Or, is it as simple as downloading some themes and icons and installing them?
I don't mind reading and/or teaching myself how to do it, but, if someone could just point me the right direction I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers.
actually , you have no need to root your phone if you just want to change some icons or themes , but you may change your launcher so you can use those themes or dock icons that you have download in xda .
Try different launchers to replace your standard home, they're all good. Adw is what I normally use, launcher pro is good, go launcher also.
sinkster
I was actually curious about this too. I like PyroMod, but I think the Opacity of the windows should be closer to 80% and the notification fonts should be white instead of black. What specifically do I need to modify for this to work?
Thanks for the replies.
I downloaded and installed Launcher Pro, just to try...I have read about ADW and a couple others that I will try as well once I get the hang of this thing.
Are there any problems that may pop up with the phone using 2 launchers? I guess not or you guys wouldn't be using them.
im using launcher pro and zeam launcher and i had no problems so far
Without rooting, you can change icons on your homescreen (using a home replacement app and/or Desktop Visualizer), use modified widgets as long as they're not system apps, customize your lock screen with WidgetLocker, and of course change your wallpaper. You can also use something like Multipicture LWP to do a bit more creative stuff - like embedding icons on the wallpaper in PS and stuff.
With rooting you can do all of those things, plus modify your status bar & notification icons, change icons for apps officially (not just on the homescreen), modify system apps or remove them, etc etc. If you have no reason to root, don't. It's a common misconception that you have to root to make your phone look good. While it definitely helps, it's not necessary.
If you do plan on rooting and are interested in theming, see if MIUI is available for your device. You may like it, and the theming possibilities are endless. If you don't like it or it isn't available, other roms have theming built in as well - CM7 is one that comes to mind.

Rooting might be something I would think about down the road, but, being so new to this I will probably hold off for now. I wouldn't mind unlocking it at some point though as I do travel to the States a couple times a year and would like the freedom that provides for my trips.
Thanks for the detailed reply, it is appreciated and I will look into some of those apps that you mentioned.

New Plus owner

Just got my 7.0 Plus P-6210, rooted it, and now I'm looking for "stuff" to do. I'd like to get themes, I'd like to use the LumTec clocks so I'll need Crazy Home (having trouble finding a compatible version), and whatever else 'cool' I can do. I use this for work and pleasure so I don't want to actually launch nuclear missiles, just up the alert level from time to time. Any ideas?? (And, for you flamers, Yes, I have been looking at the forum, FAQs, etc. as well Multiple sources are always good!)
Welcome to the gt+ forum. You can start by personalizing the user interface. I find the touch wiz to be quite dull. I am using Go Launcher Ex, there are plenty of themes and personalization that you can play with.
On the developer side, not much you can do, very few devs have dedicated time to our beloved tablet. You can install cwm version from Gary, and try a couple kernel setting to both overclock and undervolted your beast!
Have fun...

I'm a fairly new owner as well. So far I've played around with different interface options and so far I really like GO Launcher HD, Widget Locker for the lock screen, and minimalistic text for weather / clock / system info widgets.
There were several helpful threads in the Android Theme forum.

On the productivity side, I've found a few good ideas like:

Thanks. I'm using ADW Launcher right now and it's 'ok' but thats all. Beautiful Widgets for time and wx. I'd like to use some of Cookie Monsters stuff but I think that's only for phones. Also Cracy House but, again, can't find one compatible with the tab. I'll keep playing with it and see if I go blind.

Need help customizing my homescreens (willing to pay)

I'm pretty new to Android (haven't had an Android phone since 2009).
I'm not up to date on the current widgets or anything like that.
Looking to improve what I have currently

That looks pretty sleek! What icon pack is that?
What have you already got?
Have you tried playing around with Themer yet?
And try Zooper Widget, it allows you to create your own widgets from scratch (Although that one already looks a lot like a Zooper). Also has the option to install widget packs that others have made. There's an XDA board on it if you want ideas. It also allows you to make fullscreen widgets (and thus custom homescreens with buttons and all).
I personally greatly adore Live Wallpapers. Check out Forest HD, Galaxy Pack and the sort.
Next Launcher is also great fun. (Though I prefer Apex, as it's more vanilla. Which one's the one you're using?)
