Trying tmobile - General Questions and Answers

I'd like to test tmobile data reception in my area without. paying a restocking fee on a tmobile phone if it sucks.
Any way I could get good tmobile reception from my old verizon note 3? Will the tmobile guy do it or am I on my own?

My phone is stock and cannot be rooted. I don't wish to anyway. I merely want to try my phone on tmobile. Won't changing APN be sufficient?

First, you "need" to be rooted to change the APN settings effectively without issues...
I've never done this personally myself and it's "very rare" to do by changing just the APN settings but, I'll do what I can to help point something out to you.
Not all carriers share the same CDMA/GSM Frequencies as some will cross the frequency paths between one, the other and/or both.
So you'll need to look at the Network Capabilities between the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900V) & the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900T). The following links are just one of a few sources to do this with.
https://www.sammobile.com/devices/galaxy-note-3-verizon/specs/SM-N900V/
https://www.sammobile.com/devices/galaxy-note-3-t-mobile/specs/SM-N900T/
From what I can see, the two networks do share a similar/common network capability up to 3G. The 3G/4G LTE is then very much different since the Verizon uses CDMA and T-Mobile uses GSM.
In conclusion, you may be able to get the Verizon device to work on the T-Mobile network but, the 3G may/may not work and the 4G/4G LTE doesn't look like it'll work at all.
Just keep in mind that Identical Devices, like the the "Samsung Galaxy Note 3" itself, doesn't mean identical capabilities (primarily regarding Network Capabilities) like the "Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 3" and the "T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3".
This is the best guidance that I can provide you with and I did my best to explain this okay via text...
I do wish you the best of luck!

Oh thanks. I only care about LTE so if that doesn't work there is no sense in trying. My Note 3 has all the VZW updates so as I understand it it cannot be rooted by any known method. Thanks for your help. You prevented me from wasting time and money.
Reports I get from tMobile users vary widely but anecdotally everyone I know personally tells me tMobile reception sucks compared to VZW. I will never know because I'm not going to go through the trouble of purchasing a tMobile device only to have a huge hassle returning it and getting sales tax refunded if I find service inadequate.

I've got a few Verizon Galaxy S devices and have never used them directly with Verizon but, indirectly as a Service Provider and not as a Network Provider (I think I've got that right LOL!).
I personally use the BYOP program from Net10 as my Network Provider.
Net10 has contracts with all the Major Network Providers like Verizon. So my current G900V Galaxy S5 is activated with Net10 and uses the Verizon Towers for Service (yes... I've got 4G LTE service).
Verizon (directly) has great service coverage but, out of my price range. This is why I went with Net10.

US Cellular Variant Offical Thread

Hey guys, the Samsung Galaxy S III is finally coming to US Cellular this Thursday and/or Friday.
This is the official thread for the US Cellular variant of the phone.
We will discuss mods, flashing, rooting, and etc.
In for my 2 friends on USCC whose phones I'll be rooting (for tether). Hopefully it won't be locked like VZW.

It won't, I spoke with a US Cellular representative today and it's where I got the release date and other details.
The thing is, that the phone does have a lot of similarities with Verizon, so the devs have 2 options.
They can make one for US Cellular and edit it for Verizon.
But as Verizon is a larger carrier, they'll probably get the Developer's edition of the phone and then at some point make a root for the US Cellular version.
You think that CyanogenMod 9 or 10 will be supported for the USC variant?

There's no reason why not.
As far as root, the CWM flash method has worked on all variants thus far, I don't see why it won't work on the USCC phone.
I am switching this fall when my contract is up in Verizon to US Cellular. What will the dev scene look like on this phone? Will it be easy to port ROMs from other GS3? If there are very few devs working on this phone, how easy is it for a end user to port the ROM from another GS3?
since I already have a mini sim and a lTE acount thats active, from my Galaxy Nexus on verizon, can I just pay cash for the us cellular version and plug in my active sim and it will work?

Well, there are already people getting the phone today, but I know that past phones like the Mesmerize and the Aviator have been Cyanogenmod supported, and Root supported.
Do you happen to know which carrier US Cellular has the most similarities to?

The US Cellular variant of the Galaxy S II shared a lot of similarities with the Epic4G Touch.
Well, as US Cellular is finally starting to grow, I've seen a lot of developers for AOKP and CM9 discussing the possibilities of ROMs by making it for the 4G Touch, and just porting it over by changing a few things.
I can't answer that last question as I really have no idea on porting ROMs, but as I said in another post, it's either closer to Verizon or Sprint.
But for the S II, I've seen a few threads that it was very easy, but that they just had to change a few things, so I'm assuming that it's not that much of a hassle.

I've tried Googling that but I can't seem to find an answer.
Some answers say yes some say no, but I think that US Cellular has more similarities to Verizon than any other carrier, at least that's my speculation in terms of radios, as they both use the same spectrum.
But you can go to the website and go to a live chat with a representative and ask there.
Has anyone rooted this phone yet? Can we get our own section?
Bump for a fellow U.S. Cellular S3 owner. Would love to see it rooted.

The instructions at galaxys3root.com works for US Cellular.
So it is confirmed that this phone has an unlocked bootloader?
Has anyone tried and can verify on U.S. Cellular that they have used galaxys3root.com and it worked?
this phone can be rooted with the method that team epic uses for the sprint version. I dunno what the website you're talking about does but it is the same method as it is with all the other carriers.
I would love to see a separate section for us, no we aren't gonna have a whole lot of development going on compared to the big 4 but it would be really nice to have a place where we can have specific discussions and rom ports and things for just us.

Does anyone know if a verizon mini sim will work in this device?
Yes that site just has a set by step guide for installing the Team Epic recovery using ODIN and it worked on my US Cellular Galaxy S III.
Seconded on the separate forum idea. I think there will be more than enough people to have one. I know a lot of people is moving to this from the Desire and that had a decent sized community.
Successful root using teamepics procedure.
Agree with vex and all the rest. A separate forum for USCC GS3 owners would be wonderful.
Who would we contact to get a separate section?

[Q] Verizon S7 on AT&T

Not sure if this should be here or in the the Verizon S7 forum. I have an offer for a Verizon S7 at a really good price, but long term I think I want to stay with AT&T for compatibility reasons. Does anyone know if the Verizon S7 can be set to make use of all of AT&T's bands? I've seen conflicting answers on if it would be possible or not. Then again, maybe I should just bite the bullet and switch carriers, but I'm not quite ready to do that.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

All of the US phones have the same chipset which means all of the phones should have the same bands available . It is up to the carrier to decide which one to use and I believe there shouldn't be much difference between carriers, although I don't live in the US so I may not be 100% correct. So the best place to post this thread would be at the Verizon forum, because this one is meant for the international version.
From what I've experienced it's not to terribly bad, and from what I've read verizon doesn't have support band 12 and 29, which AT&T uses band 12 predominantly which sucks but what are our other options at the moment?

eSIM = not locked to a carrier?

I have a Verizon model Great S2, never activated, only used via BT. Can it be activated in T-Mobile? Do I need to get it unlocked?
Thanks.
I also have the Verizon model and was told the same but not sure since I myself haven't tried to activate the watch.

I'm also wondering about the radio. Do the different models have different modems, and since the Verizon one has a CDMA modem, is it incompatible with T-Mobile bands?
If you look at Network Mode you'll see WCDMA/GSM (auto connect) so I'm guessing you could, I would check to see if yours is the same, which I wouldn't be surprised if it was. I have a 2nd hand Gear S2 that was bought from TMO. Then again, what do I know since I was too chicken to buy a Verizon one to find out before buying the one I have.
OK, I live chatted with Samsung and called their support phone line. According to both, the carrier versions are carrier locked, and cannot be unlocked. So, no switching between carriers. They told me I'll need to buy another Gear S2 if I want to move to another carrier.
If the Verizon version is capable of LTE then it should be carrier unlocked out of the box just like their phones. It was part of the stipulation for them to be able to buy the extra spectrum they bought a while back.

Anyone tried to Verizon Gear S2 on a GSM network (AT&T or T-mobile)?
Just bought a Gear S2 for $99 refurbished and thinking maybe I should have bought GSM because or worldwide compatibility.
None of the Gear S2 have LTE which is carrier compatible. Verizon Sprint have CDMA 3G and AT&T and T-Mobile have GSM 3G.

I activated my S2 Verizon on Page Plus. Put a $10 pin on it that will last 120 days.
$0.10/min talk, $0.05 text, $0.10 meg data.
Given my experience with the Gear S this is enough for my needs when I'm occasionally without my phone.
jb
JB can you say more on how you got it activated I'm on Page Plus? Something like that would be perfect for me. Just order a T-mobile S2 Classic. Thanks.

[Completed] Need Help with possibly Moving to Sprint from Verizon.

So I posted in the Sprint Galaxy S4 section. The reason for this was I am familiar with the S4 on Verizon and thought maybe I would got to Swappa.com
and get a Sprint S4 if Sprint looked like it might work. I would however like to ask people in general about Sprint with any phone that they have.
I basically want to know the same questions about any phone possibility with Sprint.
So I will in quotes show you what I posted in the S4 area of Sprint on XDA. Any help would be MOST appreciated.
("Hello to all in this Forum.
I am starting here because I have a Galaxy S4 with Verizon and it has served me well for years and does everything I need.... so why look elsewhere.
It also seems that there is still alot of good development for the S4 here with yall on Sprint.
The reason for leaving Verizon is that to keep my Unlimited Data for two phones my bill is close to $270.00 dollars a month.
We just cant keep doing that any more.
SOOO What I am trying to find out is with Sprint is:
*Is the service good number one?
*Can you easily get TWRP on any phone ( which is best) is the S4 a good contender?
*Can you get a WiFi hotspot easily?
*If you can get a WiFi hotspot how many GigaBytes before they Throttle, how bad is the Throttling?
I use well over 100 Gb of data a month per line with Verizon..... Will Sprint poo poo a brick and shut me down if I do that with them?
We live in the country and the Verizon phone is our only source of Internet. We broadcast our Hotspot and do Netflix, and Amazon Prime as this is our only source of TV.
I looked on a map recently, It shows in my area the best coverage for 4G LTE. The LTE plus is not bad either.... although I dont know what phone uses LTE plus.
Any help or thoughts on this would be SOOOO much appreciated. This would be a huge and scary jump for us because once you lose Unlimited with Verizon... you'll never get it back, and right now they work and do everything very well...... We just pay through the Nose for it.
Thank you!!")

Cross carrier use

I have VZW but am looking to get the S3 Frontier LTE through T-Mobile. It amazes me with the launch date being tomorrow VZW has no information on the S3.
That being said. How seamless will it be using a VZW S7 Edge and T-Mo Gear S3? I figure I can connect via BT when carrying my phone but how about when I want to leave the phone behind. Some have said the Gear app will allow me to forward the calls from the phone to the watch. How does that affect texts and other features?
I travel internationally so having T-Mo might not be a bad idea with their international included in their plans.
Thanks for any info you can provide.
It will very likely not work at all on Verizon's LTE (although it should work fine as a Bluetooth watch). Verizon's primary LTE band is B13, and the T-Mobile version of the Gear S3 Frontier doesn't support it.
I've read in numerous places that the SIM is embedded and will not work on any network but the seller's.

Apologies, I've seen too many posts from people that want buy the TMO or AT&T LTE versions with the intent to use them on VZW.
Given your requirements, I don't think it will be as seamless as you might like, and I suspect it's a fringe use case so finding someone with practical experience may take some patience.
You might want to consider posting your question on the S2 thread, since it should not be any different with the S3. There are more of those users out in the wild, some of which may doing what you are considering. I too will likely be be crossing carrier lines, so please share your findings/experience.

It will work just as seamless as it would if they were both on the same carrier. I've used the s2, s2 classic and now I have the s3 from tmobile with my Verizon phone. I wish it did the number sync, but AT&T'S the only one that does that.
I used to have T-Mo Galaxy phones, but now I only use my work phone: Verizon S7 Edge. I have had all the Gear S watches since the first one a couple years ago. I switched to my Verizon phone a few months ago and it was seamless to pair with my Gear S2 and now with my Gear S3.
However, I am having a weird issue since I started using my Verizon phone (with Gear S2 and now the same problem with my Gear S3). Not a total deal-breaker, but annoying, nonetheless. I am sure there is a solution out there, so I am not giving up on the watch just yet. For no apparent reason, calls will sporadically be auto-answered (on the phone) or will go straight to voicemail and I'll get a notification a few minutes later, which is the only way I realize I had a missed call. The only thing that has changed is the phone is a Verizon model, so that is the only thing I can think of. The Verizon call forwarding is a little different than the way T-Mo does it, so that is all I can think of that could be the possible cause.
Other than that the T-Mo watch works fine with a Verizon phone. Just curious if anyone else has this problem or if they have the same set up and are not experiencing the problem.
