Hi all,
I've tried different methods to apply the November OTA to my Pixel 3, but so far none has worked seamlessly. Here's what I've tried so far:
- TWRP install the full OTA from Google (fails with a timestamp error)
- sideloading the full OTA from Google (same timestamp error)
- using topjohnwu's suggestion from his Magisk GitHub, which in short temporarily unroots the phone to allow the regular OTA process to take place, then before rebooting use Magisk Manager to patch the boot image of the spare partition (in this scenario, the phone won't even boot fully, it does boot but eventually restarts before hitting the lockscreen).
Is there any correct way to apply OTAs straight from the phone, without using a computer? If not, what would be the best way to update the Pixel 3?
Why not just flash-all (minus the -w) the system image?

Because that requires a computer. I'd rather have a solution that would allow me to update on the fly; preferably, flashing an OTA through TWRP, which would then allow me to also reflash TWRP itself and Magisk. But, then again, this would simply be my optimal scenario - if it can't be done, I'll stick to flash-all.

Understood. I have just got so used to installing with the flash-all that is second nature. OTA through TWRP wasn't even working for a long time on the OG Pixel series, and putting the ~700 MB OTA file on the phone seemed like a waste since I only had a 32GB. Either way, permanent TWRP and Magisk are still installed directly from the phone and the TWRP .img fastboot boot needs a computer anyways so there is really no way to avoid the computer completely from end to end.

Well, if I could apply a full OTA directly from an already installed TWRP, then it'd be as simple as reinstalling TWRP and Magisk after the OTA. I was used to doing this on AOSP-based ROMs like Ressurection Remix or CyanogenMod/LineageOS.

No way to do it on a Pixel device (that I am aware of) since TWRP needs ran from outside of the OS. I seem to remember this coming up a bit when the OG Pixel first launched, and then it was just accepted to use fastboot boot.

Yeah, there's something funky about how TWRP works with the A/B setup, because of the embedded recovery into boot and such, I assume. In any case, at this point it seems like I actually can get it updated using fastboot, so that'll have to do for the time being.
Thanks for bouncing off ideas with me!

Last I heard flashing OTA in twrp is broken, but even if it is fixed as soon as you flash the OTA you would lose TWRP. So you still need a computer to boot to TWRP to install it and/or root.
The key point is you have to boot to TWRP before you can flash either it or Magisk.

But that's what I was trying to do in the first place: booted from TWRP, apply OTA than flash TWRP and Magisk.
Which doesn't boot up, unfortunately. Not sure why.

Right, it is broke that way right now. It's hard to do because recovery where TWRP sits and boot are the same partition now. Touch one you touch both. So when you flashed the OTA you wiped TWRP out of recovery.

That's true, but when I'm using TWRP that's the runtime instance, not the installed one. So even if it gets overwritten by the OTA installation, it wouldn't matter since it would still be active at that moment.
I went nuts trying to figure out how to sideload the Nov OTA update through TWRP (was always easy with my OG Pixel) and then figured it doesnt work lol. Just did like was already suggested and took out the -w from the OTA and it went smooth after I updated my platform tools. This is the way I will do it from now on even if TWRP gets fixed which that looks unlikely.
Anyone do it without using TWRP?

Yes, download the factory image and edit the flash-all batch file to remove the -w. Alternately, you can flash the stock boot image of your current os version and use the stock recovery to sideload the ota. Either way twrp will be replaced with the stock recovery.

Method that worked for me (Fi Pixel3 (blueline), on Nov update, previously rooted via Magisk 17.3 Patch Boot Image File method) has been posted elsewhere & doesn't require TWRP installation. This assumes your device is already OEM Unlocked, has Developer Options/USB Debugging enabled/setup and you have the latest ADB/Drivers installed on your PC:
Download Dec Factory image (blueline-pq1a.181205.006)
Download TWRP 3.2.3-0 bootable image (twrp-3.2.3-0-blueline.img)
Download Magisk 17.3 zip
Download Magisk Manager 6.0.1 APK
Download Magisk Uninstaller (Canary)
Move TWRP bootable image file to ADB folder on PC (Win7 for me)
Unzip Dec image contents into ADB folder on PC
Find the Dec Boot.img file from extracted Dec image contents and copy it to Device Storage (Download folder)
Move Magisk Manager APK & Magisk Uninstaller zip to Device Storage (Download folder)
Modify the flash-all.bat file from the extracted Dec image contents location in Notepad (remove the -w) and save/overwrite the file back to the same directory & close Notepad
Open up command window from ADB folder on PC
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot twrp-3.2.3-0-blueline.img
"Install" the Magisk Uninstaller zip (via TWRP) wait for that to finish then reboot to bootloader.
(Re)Open a command window from your PC's ADB folder if you closed it.
flash-all (with the -w previously removed in Notepad). Wait for it to finish.
fastboot reboot (if it doesn't boot back to System once finished)
(Now in Android after 1st system boot) Check that Dec update has taken (Settings->System->About Phone->Build Number). No root.
To continue rooting Dec Image:
Install Magisk Manager APK (from Settings->Storage->Files->Download folder)
Open MM (ignore/dont install anything via MM if prompted). No root (as of yet).
In MM: Settings->Update Channel-> Change to "Beta"
Swipe down in MM to "Update" MM and "Install" v17.3 (17302.zip hotfix) via Patch Boot Image File method (using Dec Boot.img previously extracted and put into Device Storage (Download folder)).
Output Patched_Boot.img should now be located in Device Storage (Download folder).
Copy Patched_Boot.img file from Device Storage to ADB folder on PC
Open up a command window from ADB folder on PC again:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash boot_a Patched_Boot.img
fastboot flash boot_b Patched_Boot.img
fastboot reboot
(assuming everything took) Open up MM, confirm Magisk 17.3 is installed & you have root
Re-Install all relevant MM modules (i did not have Active Edge module previously installed but heard there were issues with this module & root)
There's way more steps in that than needed and really doesn't address how to apply an ota to a rooted phone.
Line 13 is the only thing that would apply.

WARNING: Before attempting to root your device, do note that by unlocking your bootloader and modifying your device with root, ROMs, etc... you are risking voiding your warranty! I am NOT responsible for what you do to your device either, so follow these instructions at your own risk. Make sure you know what you're doing, it's best to understand the process rather than just copy and paste commands and such.
Useful and important general information can be found in the second post here.
NOTES
1. If you flash the TWRP Installer when you've already got Magisk installed, your device will keep booting to the recovery. You should be able to fix this by just simply reflashing Magisk.
2. If you have TWRP installed via the TWRP Installer, you will not be able to install stock OTA updates. You will have to reflash the stock boot image for whatever build you're running beforehand.
3. The prebuilt TWRP image may not have touch functionality if you're using the September 2018 Update or newer. Patching the boot image, however, for these builds with the TWRP Installer will allow touch to work flawlessly. Here is a pre-patched September 2018 Boot Image with TWRP. It should also work with builds newer than September. Since it's based off the September 2018 update, I suggest not using this as your main boot image but rather just as a replacement for the pre-built TWRP image from the official TWRP thread.
4. Simple "flash and forget" boot images pre-patched with Magisk and TWRP are provided by @aer0zer0 and are available here. They are based on ianmacd's variant of Magisk. If you are running stock, you can flash these boot images to get root and TWRP instead of following the guide to patch it yourself. Here is January's.
If you don't care about TWRP and simply want to just root your device, you can just simply patch the boot image for your ROM with the Magisk Manager and flash it in fastboot with
Code:
fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img
The link to the boot images for most stock builds can be grabbed from my Google Drive link in the second post or from the back-to-stock zips.
REQUIREMENTS
An unlocked bootloader
Working adb and fastboot environment, along with knowledge on how they work.
The latest build of TWRP along with the TWRP Installer. Read Note 3 above beforehand.
1. Download the latest build of TWRP and the TWRP Installer. Transfer the TWRP Installer zip to your device.
2. Reboot your phone into fastboot. Once in fastboot, change your device's current slot using the command
Code:
fastboot set_active other
If the command above doesn't work for you, use fastboot getvar current-slot followed by fastboot -aX, replacing "X" with the slot opposite (a or b) from your current slot.
3. Once your device's current slot has been switched, flash the TWRP image you downloaded earlier using the command
Code:
fastboot flash boot twrp.img
Depending on your version of fastboot, the above command might not work either. In that case, you can enter the following command, replacing "X" with your current slot (a or b).
Code:
fastboot flash boot_X twrp.img
4. Once TWRP has been flashed, boot into the recovery.
5. Once you have booted into TWRP, simply flash the TWRP Installer zip.
6. Once you have finished flashing the TWRP Installer zip, boot to recovery on the OPPOSITE slot. You can do this from TWRP by going to "Reboot", then selecting the opposite of the current slot (if on A, select Slot B. If on B, select Slot A), then select "Recovery." You can also do this through fastboot by running the same command from step 2.
7. Once you have booted back into TWRP, simply flash the Magisk zip and you are now good to go! Feel free to flash anything else like kernels while you're at it.
8. Reboot. :good:
NOTE: TWRP WILL remain installed on your device so long as you reflash the installer zip after every update.

1. Find the current slot with
Code:

or
Code:

2. Switch to the opposite slot in Fastboot using the command
Code:
fastboot set_active other
3. Flash TWRP using the command
Code:
fastboot flash boot twrp.img
4. Now, boot into TWRP and use the following command from your PC, replacing X in "boot_X" with the original slot from step 1 (a or b). TRIPLE CHECK:
Code:
adb shell dd if=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/boot_X of=/sdcard/boot.img
5. Profit! Don't forget to switch back to the original partition with the same command from step 2!
extractTarFork() error when restoring data from a TWRP backup
1. Reinstall the ROM from which the backup is based on.
2. Wipe your data. You can do this from the recovery or from fastboot using the command
Code:
fastboot -w
3. Boot into the ROM. When going through the initial setup, use the EXACT same security setup as the one from your backup. For example, if you used a Fingerprint + Password in the backed up ROM, use the exact same combo along with the exact same password as well. There is no need to set up anything else, like accounts.
4. Flash, install, and reboot into TWRP. You should now be able to restore the data backup without any issues.

You need to flash the system and boot images from Invisiblek's stock ROM dump. You'll then be unrooted and will be able to accept the update.
Factory reset no longer required if your bootloader is already unlocked? Does TWRP read encypted storage now? Or is that still a problem?

Maybe I'm not gathering the information correctly, using the Magisk Module itself doesn't work, sideloading the zip file via the adb fastboot TWRP.img doesn't work either, using the actual Xposed APK installer doesn't work either. I rebooted the phone about 4 times before removing it entirely.
Any chance you can walk me through how you got it installed without the TWRP recovery fully installed?

Issues after updating?
If you end up unable to boot or bootlooping afterwards, you most likely have an old Magisk module that isn't playing nice with the new build. There are 2 main things you can do:
1. Flash the new factory untouched boot image. You will of course lose root, and all modules will be disabled. However, it should at least get you able to boot back up quickly and have a working phone if you're in a bind.
2. I would recommend checking Tulsadiver's thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-4-xl/how-to/magisk-modules-disabler-booting-magisk-t3990557
Instead of reverting to stock boot image, fastboot boot (NOT FLASH) Tulsadiver's boot image. This will boot your phone in Magisk Core-Only Mode, with all modules disabled but root retained. From here you can open Magisk Manager and disable suspect modules. Before rebooting, go to Magisk Manager's settings and disable Magisk Core-Only Mode. Once you disable the incompatible module, the phone should boot back up.
- See this post (or thread) for more tips / context / an example: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=82509691&postcount=16
Since Magisk v21.x, Core Only mode has been replaced by using Android's built-in Safe Mode. Booting into Safe Mode should essentially boot you back into your system but with all modules disabled (as well as Magisk Hide). Keep in mind that even after you reboot, modules will remain disabled, unless you re-enable them first. Also remember to re-enable Magisk Hide if you had it enabled before.
Please see @Didgeridoohan's guide for more details: https://www.didgeridoohan.com/magisk/MagiskModuleIssues#hn_Core_Only_Mode
It's also worth mentioning, his guide is extremely well-made and contains a lot of useful information that could benefit all Magisk users and modders. I highly recommend looking through it anyway!

C:\Unified_Android_ToolKit\platform-tools_r30.0.4-windows\platform-tools> adb sideload C:\Temp\pics\coral-ota-rq2a.210405.005-0d148a1d.zip
serving: 'C:\Temp\pics\coral-ota-rq2a.210405.005-0d148a1d.zip' (~94%) adb: failed to read command: No error
The device itself showed something across the lines of exit error code 0.
Everything seems to be running ok so far. Do I have to worry about the OTA stopping to transfer at 94%?

Like @Ghisy already said, definitely start with trying newest platform tools. I've had that error come up before but experienced no problems.. weird thing is it happened to my wife's Pixel 4, but not my Pixel 4 XL when I did the updates right after another. So used the same platform tools, PC, etc. Another thing to consider that may help you feel better is that some custom ROMs actually expect that to happen when installing their ROM as a sideload OTA, so could indeed be nothing to worry about.
If it really really worries you, you could always flash the full factory image with "-w" removed from the script file, and either replace the boot.img with the Magisk patched one (rename it first), or flash it separately later. But for now if everything is working normally and it indicates you're on April 2021, I wouldn't worry about it.

What @Lughnasadh said is certainly true; is this what you mean? Or the way I read your question, are you losing root between reboot despite flashing the Magisk patched boot image? Are you sure you flashed it? Are you doing fastboot flash boot (file.img) or doing fastboot boot (file.img)? Make sure you're actually flashing it, not just booting to it. If all else fails, try doing a complete uninstall of Magisk and then start over (hopefully won't be necessary). I've never heard of anyone having the problem you're having though, and it sounds more like you're fastboot booting to the Magisk patched image, and not actually fastboot flashing it...

Ohhh yes thanks to remember me i forgot to write FLASH i was only boot without flash. Thanks for all
im having an issue with getting root back. i followed the instructions and when its time to reboot to the system, i get the splash screen but it reboots back to the bootloader or itll reboot twice and send me to the OS but without Magisk. ive done the factory image thing and still the same thing. i need help
@i5lee8bit Good stuff as usual, updated fine over here! Thanks!
Does anyone know the update process for Magisk now that everything is unified? I used to update manager then patch the boot image again. Is it still the same process from Magisk 22 to 22.1 (today's update)?

If you are already rooted on Magisk 22.0, you should be able to just update the app to 22.1 and then do the direct install method to update root (I just did this and everything was fine using Beta channel). If you were unrooted and installing root for the first time (rather than updating), patching the boot image would be the way to go.
@Lughnasadh Yeah, I'm already rooted on v22. Just did the app update then direct install and it worked fine! I've been in the rooting game since the HTC Desire but the latest changes with Magisk confused me for a minute there!
Thanks

Hey sorry, had a really busy week and haven't been on XDA in a few days. Did you get this resolved yet?
My first thought was you were probably bootlooping due to a Magisk (or Xposed) module that doesn't agree with the new firmware. Because that could cause a bootloop, kicking you back to bootloader and eventually forcing a safe mode boot, disabling all Magisk modules and MagiskHide... only problem with this is that afterwards, you should still have root, though with all modules and MagiskHide disabled (I'm more attuned to believe this was actually your case, not that you were "losing root" per se. When it boots back up, are you able to go into Magisk Manager and toggle your modules? Also, what does it say on the manager's home page under "Magisk" and "App" sections? (the parts titled "Installed"). You'll also want to make sure you're running / have installed Manager v22.0 (if flashing the Magisk patched image I provided in the OP; you can always update Magisk / Magisk Manager to v22.1 afterwards).
Sounds like you already tried flashing the 04-2021 full factory image too? Which would eliminate the possibility you maybe flashed the wrong boot / dtbo / or OTA files. If all else fails:
Re-flash full factory image (remove the -w flag in the script file - it sounds like you already did this so I'm assuming you know why) and it should boot unrooted - but you should be able to use the phone.
Make sure Magisk Manager version is 22.0 (i.e. same version as patched in the OP, though 22.1 would work fine too), and if not, grab it from topjohnwu's github and install it.
Reboot to bootloader and flash the Magisk patched boot image in OP (fastboot flash boot coral-rq2a.210405.005-magisk_patched-22.0.img).
Boot the phone. Hopefully you're done.
But if it bootloops, boot it in safe mode (this will disable all your modules as well as MagiskHide). Reboot again.
Open Magisk Manager and all modules should be disabled... time to test for the culprit!
Remember to re-enable MagiskHide, if you had it enabled before. It does not automatically re-enable like it did back in the pre-Magisk 21.0 days. Wow, this post ended up being a lot longer than I expected, and you might not even need the help anymore, lol (though I hope you did get it resolved sooner than later). But at least I can link to this as reference for future guides. Best of luck to you.

Exactly as @Lughnasadh said, this is what I do too (except I'm using stable channel). Direct Install used to give me problems, but that was almost a year ago (a bit after I first got the phone last March), but it hasn't given me any problems since. Even in the very unlikely chance it did cause problems, you could always re-flash the patched boot image in the OP and then patch the stock boot image yourself using Magisk Manager and flash it.

Nah, you're good fam. I ended up accidentally flashing the factory img and I'm back with root. Thank you for your help and the guides
Hi,
with the latest Magisk update I noticed the missing Magisk Hide and SafetyNet fix. So I decided to go back to Magisk 23. After a few unsuccessful attempts, I don't know what happened but now my phone is no longer rooted. So I tried some usual methods to re-root the device but nothing to do, still no root
I have used boot.img patching way with Magisk but when I send ADB command "fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img", it seems to work fine but after reboot there is no root
So I tried the other method by booting the device with patched boot.img using ADB ("fastboot boot magisk_patched.img") then I open Magisk Manager but in the installation section there is no "direct install" option as it should be.
I also tried flashing Magisk.zip via TWRP as I did long ago and TWRP seems to do the job well but after rebooting again no root...
Any suggestions?
even though you don't have root, i suggest flashing the stock boot.img and then rebooting to be really sure that root has been removed. and then flash the magisk patched boot.img.
are you using the latest adb and fastboot? you can get the latest from here. https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools
fyi, i just updated to magisk 24.1 and enabled zygisk. i'm using @kdrag0n's universal safetynet fix. google pay works. i don't have any other apps that i need to hide magisk from.

How did you get this to work? I am on the latest OP7P OOS (11.0.5), and I haven't been able to get my phone rooted, even though I installed the boot.img I patched using Magisk v24.1.

i'm running 11.0.5.1.GM21AA. i was already rooted with magisk v23, so i updated the magisk app to 24.1, and did a direct install to update root to 24.1.
but for any os upgrades, i download the firmware zip from my phone to my pc before installing. i extract the boot.img from the zip with payload dumper, patch it with magisk, and then flash it via fastboot. this way i know for sure that i'm using the correct boot.img. if you need the firmware zip to extract the boot.img from, you can use the oxygen updater app to download it.
did you use the stock boot.img for patching?

Yes, I used the stock boot.img that I extracted from the 11.0.5.1 file that was downloaded as the normal OTA update from OnePlus. I patched that boot image with Magisk v24.1 that was already installed on my OP7P.
Then, I flashed that Magisk patched boot.img using fastboot onto both A and B slots (I switched slots by booting into TWRP 3.6, since I didn't see a way to switch slots with the now-loaded OnePlus Recovery Mode).
When I rebooted through the patched image, the phone came up (which is good!), but Magisk says that I don't have root (which is bad!). I haven't figured out how to fix that.
Could you PM me your patched boot.img? I could try flashing that to see if my OP7P acts any differently.
Thanks!
OK, I'm 100% positive that Magisk v24.1 patched my OP7P OOS 11.0.5.1 boot.img properly.
I extracted the 11.0.5.1 boot.img file from the OTA image that was in my .Ota folder from my phone. I extracted boot.img from the payload.bin file using two different methods of payload-dumper. Both boot.img files had the same SHA-512 checksums, so they were identical.
I also downloaded a copy of the Magisk v24.1 patched boot.img from the intenet and compared it to my Magisk v24.1 patched boot.img file. Again, the SHA-512 checksums matched for the two patched files, so I am sure that I have a properly patched boot.img file.
Note that my OP7P has loaded the full OOS 11.0.5.1 Stock image, so I currently have the OOS Recovery Mode and I do not have TWRP Recovery Mode.
Maybe I am doing something else wrong during my installation that is keeping me from getting root?
Here is the process I followed with my patched boot.img file:
I boot into Fastboot Mode
In Fastboot Mode, I go into TWRP Recovery Mode by typing: fastboot boot twrp-3.6.0_11-0-guacamole.img
After rebooting into TWRP Recovery, I installed the 11.0.5.1 OTA by doing an Install > Browse to the .Ota folder for the OTA .Zip file.
After the OOS 11.5.0.1 OTA installed, I rebooted back to Fastboot Mode (before booting normally) by selecting: Reboot > Slot A > Home > Reboot > Bootloader
Once I am back into Fastboot Mode, I type: fastboot flash boot magisk_patched_boot.img
In Fastboot Mode, I type: fastboot reboot
After I have rebooted back to normal mode, Magisk v24.1 is already installed and I don't do any updates to that. When opening Magisk, my screen flashes a couple of times before giving me a Toast pop-up that Magisk was denied Super User access. When I look at the Magisk App screen, it says that the App is installed, but that Magisk is not installed.
Are there any steps that I am missing?
Well, I finally got OOS 11.0.5.1 rooted with Magisk v24.1.
I ended up wiping my data and installing a fresh install of OOS 11.0.5.1 (Not sure if this is necessary, but I skrood up along the way and had to wipe as a result).
The one thing that was different this time around was that I disabled encryption/lock before flashing the Magisk-v24.1 patched boot image. I suspect that was what helped me make it to the finish line this time.
Good luck out there!
¿GJ?
i'm glad to hear that you got it figured out. sorry for not responding sooner with a patched boot image.
i don't use twrp, so my method of upgrading and patching is different than yours.
my only guess as to why you were having trouble before is maybe you were flashing the magisk patched boot image to the wrong slot. if you run into a similar problem in the future, you can try flashing the magisk patched boot image to both slots. but it's a moot point now. enjoy your finally rooted phone!

Hey, @altwu - I used TWRP to switch between slots when flashing the Magisk patched boot images. I had patched both slots (as best as I could tell)
If you don't use TWRP, how did you switch between slots prior to flashing the patched boot images?

you can use fastboot to switch slots.
fastboot --set-active=a or b
i don't know if it's necessary, but i reboot the bootloader with "fastboot reboot bootloader" after switching slots.
i've never tried this, but you can also specify what slot when running fastboot flash, like "fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img --slot a".
check out "fastboot help" to see the different options.
i haven't had to play around with slots though. when an update is available, i'll download the zip to a computer and then go through the normal update process via the os. after the update is done, the phone reboots and the correct active slot is set.
Thanks for the feedback, @altwu.
I am having issues getting my SMS notification sound working on my fresh(er) 11.0.5.1 installation. I haven't seen anybody respond back yet, and I am beginning to suspect it's just a problem on my OP7P. If I don't see anybody responding back by tomorrow, I'll assume it's "just me".
I am thinking about doing a total wipe again to see if it will clear up the issue I am seeing. I will end up trying your installation route this time to see if it helps at all.
I followed this guide exactly: https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/ota.html
Before starting the guide, I had a pretty new Pixel 7 Pro with the latest version of Magisk successfully installed (with bootloader UNLOCKED) and some small Magisk modules to tweak things (iOS emojis). I made sure to restore boot images and got the "restoration complete" toast message.
I saw the notification for the November update, downloaded and installed it. I did NOT reboot after that. I then went into the Magisk app and tapped "install to inactive slot (after OTA)" and rebooted from within the Magisk app.
My device rebooted, and showed me the bootloader unlocked screen, then showed me the "your device is corrupt" warning and said "press power button to continue". I pressed the power button and my device is now stuck on the Google logo.
Has this happened to anyone else? And is there any way to fix this (preferably without data loss)?

That´s a bug within AVB. Unfortunately it can happen on Pixel 6 and 7 devices.
There´s one thing that can clear it:
I know this sounds a bit counter intuitive, but download october factory image, extract init_boot.img, flash it via fastboot on your device with nov firmware.
fastboot flash init_boot init_boot.img
Try to let it boot, if it fails or crashes go back to bootloader via long press power and volume down. (can take up to 30 seconds on p7pro)
If it boots already don´t forgot to flash init_boot from november firmware still.
Then download november factory image, extract init_boot.img, flash it via fastboot as well. This might get you out of the loop.
If you want you can use a magisk_patched init_boot.img as well so you´re rooted.
That last step should get you out of the corruption loop, as flashing outdated init_boot and then correct init_boot will somehow clear avb.
I´ll attach patched init_boot.img from november firmware TD1A.221105.001, Nov 2022 for you.
I see. Thank you so much for this info. I will try and report back my results. Has this bug been fixed in newer versions of Magisk or Android? I feel like it's a high priority bug given that it soft-bricks peoples devices.
EDIT: And does this process result in data loss?

Remove "-w" from the flashall.bat, I believe that ensures you keep data.
I'm also a bit confused by this step: "flash it via fastboot on your device with nov firmware." Are you saying that I should flash october init_boot.img onto my phone, which already has the Nov firmware installed? Or do I have to merge the Oct init_boot.img into the Nov firmware (full factory image TD1A.221105.001)

yes, you flash the old outdated init_boot via fastboot on november firmware.
afterwards you flash back the correct one for november. that will hopefully clear the avb bug you´re experiencing.
You flash only this img, not anything else. do precisely the steps I described. you don´t have to flash the full firmware, as you already updated to november if I read your initial post correctly and OTA to november was successful.

no it has not been fixed.
no, with the steps detailed there´s no data loss.
I wouldn´t recommend updating your phone with the magisk flash to inactive slot method. That´s not working for most people on p6 and p7 devices.

How do you expect this to work for p7p? The Magisk code has not been updated yet to flash init_boot partition instead of boot partition on p7p. Of course, it will corrupt your boot partition.

If what @devsk states is true, you also need to flash back stock boot.img from november firmware via fastboot @Pritster5.
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Since magisk can patch init_boot.img´s, I assumed it would account for pixel 7 pro, having ramdisk inside init_boot instead of boot.img. It´s a bad design choice by magisk app to show this option to users on Pixel 7 pro in that case. :/ but even on pixel 6, the forums are full of people running into issues with that method.

Where can I see what devices are supported for that method? I assumed that the guide worked for anyone with A/B partitioning. It would be helpful if there was a notice of this somewhere on the guide or any other obvious place.
The easiest way to recover is to follow that guide and flash the whole ROM (it will fix both the boot and init_boot partitions). *Make sure* to remove -w from the flash-all.bat or flash-all.sh, whichever one you are using. This part is important. "-w" command line argument wipes your data and you don't want that.
I just updated my p7p using this method this afternoon and it worked fine.

Where can I see what devices are supported for that method? I assumed that the guide worked for anyone with A/B partitioning. It would be helpful if there was a notice of this somewhere on the guide or any other obvious place.

Oh I meant where can I see what devices support the Magisk "Install to inactive slot" guide.
You said "The Magisk code has not been updated yet to flash init_boot partition instead of boot partition on p7p. Of course, it will corrupt your boot partition."
How are you aware of this? Did you find this out by reading the code itself or was there a notice of this somewhere?

Actually, this got me thinking and I looked at the code. Looks like the magisk code (the bash function find_boot_image) seems to be doing the right thing by treating init_boot ahead of boot partition.
Do you have the logs from that run of "Install to inactive slot"?

I don't believe so, as I can only connect to my phone via PC over fastboot mode right now, so I'll have to check for logs after fixing my device.
One other question though, the guide you linked mentioned disabling magisk modules before flashing the factory image. I was never able to do that because I used the inactive slot guide which made no mention of it. Will the enabled magisk modules prevent me from using the guide you linked?
I am also unable to do this step as I can't transfer files from my pc to my p7p when I cant access the phone aside from fastboot mode: "Copy the init_boot.img from the PC to the phone's internal storage." Can I skip this step?
EDIT: Should I just use the Android flash tool instead if I don't have access to ADB? Or should I instead just follow Freak07's steps since his steps don't require adb access?

Just restore your device by flashing the whole ROM. This will get rid of magisk and you should have no problem booting back into the system. You will have lost the root at that point. Once inside, transfer the init_boot.img into /sdcard and run magisk and ask it to patch that. Bring the patched file to your PC, and flash it to init_boot partition like the guide says. At that point, you should be able to boot back into the system and root should be good.
I did not disable Magisk modules and it worked fine. I have magiskhide props, shmiko, systemless hosts, zygisk - lsposed, universal safety net fix.
If you have trouble with Magisk modules, you can recover by booting into Safe Mode (restart and press down volume and keep it pressed). Magisk detects the Safe Mode and disables the modules. Done that many times.

in the end it doesn´t matter how you do it.
Flashing the complete firmware with -w removed or using the web flasher might be easier as it´s kind of a one click solution.
However simply flashing entire november firmware, might not get you out of the avb corruption loop. It might but, but it might not depending on what went wrong. If it´s the bug that I think it is, avb gets cleared when flashing an older outdated init_boot.img.
You can try to just flash the entire nov firmware with any of the methods suggested. If it doesn´t clear the avb corruption bug, flash back older init_boot from oct firmware, followed by current init boot as I originally suggested.
Freak07 said:

Ok so I did this part:
"I know this sounds a bit counter intuitive, but download october factory image, extract init_boot.img, flash it via fastboot on your device with nov firmware.
fastboot flash init_boot init_boot.img
Try to let it boot, if it fails or crashes go back to bootloader via long press power and volume down. (can take up to 30 seconds on p7pro)
If it boots already don´t forgot to flash init_boot from november firmware still."
And it works, however when I go to "About Phone" the build number is still the October version. Is this expected, given that I flashed the october init_boot.img onto a phone with November firmware? Or did my phone perhaps reboot into the older partition which the phone ran before switching to the inactive slot?
EDIT: Even after flashing the november init_boot.img after temporarily reverting to the october init_boot.img, it's still showing that I have build TD1A.220804.031 installed.
"followed by current init boot as I originally suggested."
Should I reboot back into fastboot mode again to do this?
Thank you guys so much for the help so far btw, I'm already back up and running and just need to finish the steps you mentioned.

hey Marek, i was on android 12, i flashed twrp recovery then i relocked the bootloader!
so i was stuck in bootloader infinity loop, then i downgraded my phone to an very old firmware it is begin with 18 and ends with .raw archive format and mine was beginn 31 and ends wtih zip archive format (it has payload.bin) inside.
so i get failed flashing manuelly the last update of android 12 also the last update (android 13). OTA can nothing getting. what should i do now if you don't mind!?
Edit: the phone doesnt charging and loops now at logo
Hello, you should incrementally update from your version by downloading each upgrade package from Asus site which is newer then your current version and flash them one by one. Or you can find the newest package which you are able to install and repeat this procedure until you can flash the newest Android 13 package. Your current old firmware cannot unpack newest package so you need update by steps.
Check this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/warning-read-before-locking-bootloader.4327977/post-87808387
Other method (untested): Extract latest payload.bin and flash all partitions to inactive slot than change it to active using fastboot

hey, Thanks for replay, i am facing now another messeges.
1- the phone does not charging at all
2- when i plug in into chrage its reboot again and again.
3- the bootloader is open, but when i try to flash any files through bootloader i get:
FAILED (Status read failed (Too many links))
or
FAILED (remote: 'Warning: battery's capacity is very low
to recovery mode i am unable to go there
i tried boot or flash the twrp.img also only boot.img also flash_raw_and_wipe_data.cmd
nothing helps me!!!
Hello, can you try to keep phone on charger for a few hours? Maybe it will charge enough to enter recovery mode. You should never flash twrp by fastboot on a/b devices as they don't have recovery partition. Please restore stock boot.img extracted from payload.bin and after this try booting into fastbootD, not fastboot and then attempt flashing complete firmware package (raw). To boot into fastbootD, keep holding volume keys, when you see a bootloader screen use volume keys to select option "recovery mode". You should now enter stock recovery. Ussing vol keys select option "enter fastboot". You should be now in fastbootD. This is possible only with boot.img without twrp installed as fastbootD is a part of stock recovery, magisk is fine.
Remember to perform all flashing operations with usb port on the left side, the bottom one does not work in bootloader. And make sure you are using latest adb/fastboot binaries, these from popular auto-installers are usually outdated and may cause errors during flashing.

I've tried leaving it on overnight and it never charges, there's even no charging lights.
Yesterday I tried flashing via Bugjeager and it didn't work either (betwenn to android devices)
Although the bootloader is unlocked, it gives me a Not Allowed In Lock State message!
the current version of the installed firmware is that old that i flashed WW_ZS673KS_18.0810.2101.95_M2.13.24.9-ASUS_1.1.46_Phone-user.raw, it is non extractable so i cant get the boot.img of it!
I am attaching here the matching boot.img for your 2101.95 firmware. Your phone boots to bootloader as I can see on the video but cannot enter recovery as you have corrupted your boot partition. Can you pm me output of fastboot getvar all command? Please do not post it publicly as it may contain private data such as serial numbers. Good luck!
Are you sure that you have unlocked bootloader? I understand that you have relocked your bootloader and since then your phone never booted into working system. It is not possible to unlock bl with fastboot, only with asus app which requires working Android system

Sometimes I can be a bit slow to respond as I am on the university during day. Hopefully your issue seems to be possible to be solved just by flashing raw firmware and wiping data partition.
so i was rooted on 12 when update was done i did the usual and hit "later" went into magisk did thr ota to keep root once it booted i was stuck on logo forever, so i flashed original boot.img and booted up good with no root. so then i patched boot in magisk and flashed it and stuck on logo again unless i flash original boot.img. this never happened before. how did you keep root?

if youre still stuck, try to fastboot flash raw firmware and reroot and re update again. twrp only works for me with the magisk twrp installer but then you'll have to re flash patched image as it will remove root

I did it in the same way as you, just after OTA i installed magisk to inactive slot and rebooted. Maybe you have some incompatible magisk modules which caused bootloop on A13.

Oh ok ok makes sense. I had curl module installed. I loved android 13 but I'ma stay on 12 cause the modified read/write script only works on Android 12 and 11 and I need it to uninstall bloatware. Disabling them isn't good enough for me lol I gotta uninstall them completely. I can only do that if system is read/write and this script flashed through two works great to have read/write system. Thank you though

Actually you can debloat fully systemless, just create magisk module which replaces bloatware directories with empty folders. Or even better use this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/module-terminal-debloater-v17-3-2-debloat-systemlessly.3584163/
It is an automated way to make packages fully disappear without remounting system as rw. This module replaces them with empty folders, just like in the manual solution. The packages disappear from system completely and if you install any debloated app from play store or apk it will be installed as user (non-system) app.

I found a gui-based app on github to systemlessly debloat, it is easier to use than this script I posted link to. Here is the link: https://github.com/sunilpaulmathew/De-Bloater
