Since the phone should support Treble, I guess we should be able to flash Treble based ROMs if the bootloader is unlocked? Koodo has it for $0 on the Medium Tab right now which is a solid deal.
I'm sure they'll work if we get the bootloader on this thing unlocked. I wouldn't hold your breath on this thing being unlocked anytime soon though. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I like all am excited about the bootloader finally being unlocked. Question is if it even matters. When running the batch file does the zip folder or file need to be on the phone (memory/ext sd card) to run it. I did it right from my windows desktop and it ran fine and finished but not sure if it really did anything.

Unlocking the boatloader will keep this from being the backwater of the Galaxy world. Now the d2vzw is the best phone on the best network in the US, without any reservation. In the really short term we won't see any difference, but it will lead to more developer interest. Developers can build ROMs for the device using the skills they already know without the hassle of learning Kexec and a different boot process. It'll allow official CyanogenMod support, and hopefully more cross-pollination with the other US GS3 variants. So yes, we wanted this.
now that the boot loader is unlocked, it would be safe to flash a rom from any other US variant correct? or do we still have to wait for verizon only roms?
also, how would one root before or after the unlock?
If the underlying hardware isn't different, from what I've read, it should be fine.
Folks are already flashing sprint and att kernels to the unlocked vzw gs3, so yea it should work! Although I prefer to stick with software developed specifically for this device.
gretting and salutations,
I recently traded my iphone 6 plus with a busted screen to a store for a galaxy s7, which is still under warrenty so im hella stoked. Anyway, love the phoone. Would like to root and flash something vanilla. or as vanilla as i can get.
I have an att model g930A, unlocked and on t-mobile.
I've been looking in the forums and im not seeing alot of roms for the att model, which i guess is different than the international version.
any insight??
As i said, id like the be as vanilla as i can get.
wifi calling is not required and neither is VOLTE.
-As long as tethering works, im fine.
Yes the US models are using a Qualcom CPU instead of exynos and have a locked bootloader which makes custom ROMs near impossible.
I believe you can flash stock ROMs with Odin, that's about it.

there is an option under developer options for oem unlock and i read that unlocks the bootloader.
i dont mind the phone as it is but id like to debloat or just flash straight android. no bloat.
You can find a thread here https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...covery-official-twrp-galaxy-s7-t3458579/page3 discussing the unlocking of bootloader.
According to a post in early May it still hasn't been done for US models.
Really thinking about flashing the U firmware but I'm worried about my unlock.
I couldn't go thru att but I did pay for a code, if that matters. Reading on the forum it should be fine if you got it thru att but IDK what my process is classified as.
I had an HTC 10 w/Sprint and it's getting old and full, but I liked how easy it was to unlock the bootloader. I enjoy having a rooted phone and I'm seeing that the S8+ (US Version) can be rooted, but I'm assuming there's prerequisites that used phones might/might not have to do so. So I'm just wondering if there's any questions I should ask the sellers of an S8+ on Swappa or eBay to make sure that root is possible when I decide to buy one? I don't wanna wind up w/a LS997 situation, where I got the phone but it was too upgraded that the methods to root were patched up. Thanks for any help.

No boot loader unlock. There is a method for root. It's system only root and only on nougat.
Coming from LG you've seen anti roll back we have the same. But they're is a method to downgrade the system only even on the latest boot loader to have rooted nougat https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/development/root-t3909782/post79500078#post79500078
Safestrap is like fish on the lg g4. once safe strap is in place you can then flash a older system image from older boot loader revisions.
Even on the latest boot loader we're have Samsung's test firmware called combination files. Which include a nougat bootloader that is a permissive kernel and allows for root.
I ran lg all the way back from g2 to g5. So I've been in your shoes too. that's pretty much how I ended up here. From a sprint g2 g4 and g5
So even if the phone is upgraded, there's a method to roll back to an environment to root an S8+? So I can basically just cop an S8 w/no worries then and not ask any prerequisite questions?. That's good to see. I appreciate the assist.

yea pretty much the bootloader must remain the same increment but the system does not
obviously newer pie and even oreo where all bit 5 BLs but the firmware needed for root is also bit 5 but a nougat bootloader
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/development/root-t3904613
is the perquisite to rooting
this allows a type of twrp for locked bl
we can flash pretty much all but boot img and non stock based custom roms
Bl6 hasnt been released yet so as long as you get it soon your good as
since this is edl I doubt it can be patched but always a possibility
I was reading through and people say the OEM was locked. Has anyone found a work around to this I want to get this phone for the mod friendliness however if the OEM unlocking is locked it would be impossible. Any work around? I really want to have access to hotspot with no issues
Not currently. I don't have the phone yet, ordered Friday probably won't be getting it til Monday. If it seems impossible to root, I'll trade it in for the note 10+.
Unfortunately not. You either have to meet Sprints requirements for them to unlock it (phone paid in full and active for 60 days or more on their network) or we have to wait and see if an amazing devs can help us out.
Wait does that mean that sprint will actually unlock the phone for you? If they do, is root possible or would someone still have to develop something for it?

Pretty sure the post about Sprint unlocking the device is confusing SIM unlock with bootloader unlock. Which of course are 2 very different things. I've never heard of carriers having anything to do with unlocking the bootloader. But unlocking the SIM, yes (they have to by law now).
Otherwise, the requirements stated would not be that hard to meet, and plenty of folks would already be unlocking their Sprint 7 Pro bootloaders.
Unlocking the bootloader is the main barrier to root. I don't see why (with an unlocked bootloader) you couldn't just root with one of the existing methods (flash patched boot img with fastboot, or boot TWRP and flash Magisk) and no real development would be needed. But it's that locked bootloader that is the kicker!
So is there any no root workaround for use of the native hotspot on the sprint version of this device?
Or would we just have to use an app?
