MIUI 10 on Pocophone F1 creates VPN but doesn't route traffic - Xiaomi Poco F1 Guides, News, & Discussion

EDIT:
I checked again today and my IP is changing to the remote location. I haven't received any OS update so I'm pretty sure that something shady is happening here. I'd recommend installing Lineage OS or other reputable AOSP-based ROM as soon as an official release is made.
Original post:
Try this:
Install a VPN application (I tried ExpressVPN) and check your public IP (whatismyip.com or similar). Use an incognito tab to avoid caching details.
Now run the VPN.
Check your public IP. Close the brower, or use a different browser and check whatismyip.com again.
The IP has not changed.
Traffic is not routed down the VPN. This gives users a false sense of security whilst their traffic is completely exposed.
So far I've tried a couple of VPN applications, this is a good reason to flash lineage OS. No idea if this affected MIUI 9.6, I haven't tested that. Flaw exists in MIUI 10.0.4.0

Hi
I've test vpn with OpenVPN on miui 10 (beta) and it's working without bug.

Im on stock miui 10 android 8.1 global rom.
I too have this issue when i run nordvpn and connect to an international server.
IP address doesnt change even after a successful connection.

Maybe this is only on MIUI 10 final (not beta). I'm really surprised that this passed Google CTS, this is a serious bug and security risk.

Yep. I've tried two providers myself and both exhibit the same problem.

Yep, tested on Miui 10 beta - 8.11.8 - using torguard.
My IP address is changed. Working fine on the beta...

Installed 1.1.1.1 by cloudfare, status shows connected thru VPN but ip address is not masked. Serious flaw

Yup, I believe that the 1.1.1.1 app is a DNS-changer, not a VPN client. Traffic is not tunneled through a private network using this app.

When you receive the final update please let us know what you find. Also, which OpenVPN client app are you using?

It is a DNS changer but routing network through its DNS and works as a VPN.
Infact notification shade displays VPN symbol also.

I'm on MIUI 10 Stable and using OpenVPN for Android app without any issues.

Can u check Ur IP address thru whatsmyip.com if it is changed ?

I tried openvpn and connected to one of nordvpn's spain servers. Golly! Ip address successfully changed.
The app that i used was https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.blinkt.openvpn

VPN is not working! I use adguard to block ads. It shows that the VPN is connected but no data is being routed through the application!

Cloudflares 1.1.1.1 is only a DNS resolver. It doesn't change your IP. A vpn and a dns resolver are two different things.
The symbol appears because you're routing traffic through 1.1.1.1's secured connection. Some phones display a 'key' logo , some states vpn.
If you wan't to change your IP and stay secured, i personally recommend Cyberghost on both the phone and pc.
Cheers.

I am on MIUI 10 stable with Jio mobile data.
Without VPN :
ISP : Jio
City : My Location
IPV6 address is available.
With TurboVPN :
ISP : Digital Ocean
City : Bangalore
IPV4 address is available.
So, i think it works for me.

Using Proxy (exact alternative to VPN) in Android multiuser.

Hello All,
Im just gonna cut to the chase and not give long introductions. For those of you running the 'secondary' or 'non-owner' account in Android multiuser, you know it is impossible for the secondary user to use VPN. That would require you to actually open the primary/owner account and launch the VPN from there which is quite frustrating and unfeasible. So heres how you CAN do it. I researched for months on how to do it on my Xperia Tablet Z LTE and I found a way.
REMEMBER : IF YOU WANT IT TO WORK EXACTLY LIKE VPN, THAT IS PROXYING/BYPASSING BLOCKED SITES /PROXY CHANNELING FOR EVERY APP,YOU WILL NEED ROOT!
First: Root your phone. Optional but Recommended.
Second : You can check root by any app..There are some on Google Play.
Third : Download OrBot from Google Play (cant post links as Im new user :crying:
Fourth : Install It. If you dont have/wanna root you can use OrWeb (for browsing internet on your device through proxy/bypassing block) You can find it on Google Play, You can use a few selected apps that support OrBot natively (Google's your friend) AND ANY other app which supports channeling its data through a proxy tunnel.
Fifth : For proxy tunneling use 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1' in HOST field and use '8118' in PORT field for ANY APP WHICH DOES SUPPORT CHANNELING ITS NETWORK DATA THROUGH A PROXY CHANNEL.
Sixth : In case you DO have root.It easy as pie for you to channel ALL NETWORK DATA through OrBot. Simply use the 'Transparent Proxying' option in OrBot settings.
Seventh : Enjoy unblocked sites and complete privacy.
REMEBER : ORBOT IS A VERY EFFICIENT AND COMPLETELY EFFECTIVE WAY TO HIDE YOUR IDENTITY ONLINE. Read more at its website.
Hope I helped. If so, hit the thanks button!

You can set your whole WIFI connection to go through proxy. When you connect to a network, and type in the WIFI password, click on the "Show advanced options" checkbox, and select "Manual" from the "Proxy" dropdown. I wonder if it would work like that, too!
Probably not a success.

I can't speak for that exact site, but there is a easy way to block ads for the entire TV by changing the DNS server. I use AdGuard https://adguard.com/en/adguard-dns/overview.html, but there are other DNS adblocking servers that might work better for you. On my TV, it blocks banner ads in the few apps I use. You can either change the DNS in the TV's network settings or your router. But keep in mind that changes to your router's DNS server will affect all devices on your network.
DNS Server IPs for AdGuard:
176.103.130.130
176.103.130.131

Can I make an app think I'm using a japan vpn without actually using it?

Hi, I'm a Samsung galaxy note 3 user, android version 4.4.2, I have it rooted, and xposed installed. I never installed xposed before but I installed it a couple of days ago and now I'm seeing that I can do a lot of things with it, and because of this I started wondering something.
Well, I have an app called Abematv which is a free japanese tv app that I can't use unless I connect through a japanese vpn. I do this by using an app called "japan vpn" and "openvpn connect for android". The problem with this is that sometimes is too slow and the video quality is very low. So I was wondering how could I make this app think I'm using a japanese vpn when I'm really connected to my home wifi without any vpn.
I don't know if this can be done but it sounds like it's the kind of thing that you do through a xposed module. If there's a module that can do this, I don't know how to search for it. So if anyone knows how to do this via xposed or via whatever it makes it possible, please leave a comment
Thanks

Ok well first things first. Don't mention lucky patcher here. It is banned as a Warez app and app developers will add code to that purposely causes issues if it is detected.
Depending in how it is getting your location you could make the device think it is in Japan. Something like mocking the Gps.

Hi, I eddited the message so the words don't appear. (would be good if you edit your message so the words don't appear there too, I don't want troubles xD) Thanks.
About the gps thing, I think it doesn't use the gps since I have it disabled and the app doesn't have the permission to get the location, so I think it gets the location based on the ip.
Not all VPN services are the same. Your current VPN service may be slow because it has you connecting through Japan. Nice VPN services allow you to connect to a VPN server in your country while they route your country VPN server to the final destination VPN server. This allows you to sometimes benefit with improved connection speeds. You can do free trials with most VPN services and I recommend maybe moving to another.
Example: Normal VPN> your-device->VPN server in japan->your-device
(upload/download limits determined by home network and ISP max connections)
Higher end VPN> your-device->local VPN->VPN server in japan->local VPN->your-device
(upload/download limit between VPNs determined by VPN servers which maximize limits before passing the information to your local device)
Other info relevant to the topic:
There are many options available to a developer to verify your location in today's internet.
Even your browser for your device has a unique "fingerprint" and if your gps or IP location changes they can still verify it's coming from the same device.
There are ways around browser fingerprinting.
With most programs, there is an order or hierarchy of testing your location. Spoofing your GPS may overrule an IP check. To overcome issues it's important to try and test and try even when met with failures. It's important to not be dismissive of possible solutions when troubleshooting an issue or searching for a work-around.

Can't make adway work.

Hello xda users.. today im facing a big problem..
I have op6 with rooted (magisk installed). oos 9.02
Ive installed latest adway 4.0.11. Everything works fine (adway gets permisions.. etc). But he does not stop the ads.

I haven't routed a phone for a few years now but I seem to remember Adaway wrote its hosts file to the system partition. And isn't it the way of Magisk to not write anything to system?
I use Adguard directly from Adguard.com. It just works, (apart from the odd time Oneplus closes it ,) and I ALWAYS have Google Pay working too - so no hassle at checkouts.
Ended up using dns66.. cant make adway to work..

I agree with you. Adaway just doesn't do anything for me. Adguard just works, and it works very well.
On unrooted phones, the VPN adapter is used to reroute traffic. As I use a normal VPN permanently to prohibit carrier deep packet inspection, any adblocker relying on the VPN approach is a nogo for me as Android only supports one VPN connection at a time.

I agree with you totally. I would much prefer your way of a permanent VPN and to block ads some other way.. However,
I need Google Pay to work all the time and not be in an arms race with Google;
I need to block ads;
I need a VPN that always has good connection speeds for downloads and not just a high burst speed for a few seconds..
That little list just won't work together. And that last point seems impossible to achieve - certainly with the many VPN services I've tried. I'm currently using Mullvad when I need security but cannot recommend it for speed
I use an OP6 with Android 9, OOS 9.0.1 routed with Madison 17.2
I have Google Pay, Adaway and my permanent VPN with OpenVPN.
I use NordVPN for which I pay but it's reliable and fast, allows multiple connections from my home router and my mobile.
Reliable and without any problems.

Adguard works both in vpn or in proxy mode. But for proxy mode, root is required. Using Adguard for an year ans its always my fav adblocker.
If you're using Magisk, both Magisk and Adaway need to be set to systemless via the settings in each application.
For some reason Adaway 4.x just ignore the restart warning and then just press check for updates again and it'll start properly downloading the host files.
My Adaway has the systemless setting grayed out and not ticked. I'm using Adaway 3.3 from F-Droid which is the latest version, there's no version 4. It's not available on Google Play.

Well and good for you. TrustPilot (UK) gives them only 5.8/10. There are some good and bad comments - as to be expected -but this is recent post. It chimes with my own experiences of paid VPN - more promises than delivery.
Extremely slow server
Extremely slow servers. Absolutely horrible app. They make it next to impossible to select a specific server you've used in the past and instead give you an unsorted list of thousands of servers to manually scroll through and try to find the one you want. You can search for a server but if you do it this way you can't add it to favourites.
They advertise as fast for p2p, yet my speeds are the slowest I've ever experienced with a VPN, including those lousy free vpn.

I'm aware this is off-topic for Adaway; apologies to OP for possible thread hi-jacking; but if you are in to ad-blocking the next step is VPN
I use the app OpenVPN which gives me more control, speed of servers vary but I am satisfied.

Enable private DNS on MIUI 10 android pie.

Hi guys.
I'm new to pocophone F1. Coming from a galaxy note 3 with aosp pie rom, i found that i cannot use private dns on pocophone miui 10 pie rom. Several articles on the net said it was removed from miui pie rom. The truth is it was hidden deep within miui 10.
Here's how to access it:
1. Install quick shortcut maker from playstore. Here's the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sika524.android.quickshortcut
2. Open quick shortcut maker and then scroll to settings. Click on it and then find com.android.settings.Settings$NetworkDashboardActivity (also easier to find it by typing "mor" on search bar. Click on it and then choose try, it will go to network and internet settings where you now can set private DNS there. You can create a shortcut for later use after that.
Thanks. Any code/keyword to enable WiFi sharing (e.g. share WiFi from hotspot using phone with no mobile phone signal)- it is a feature in pixel but not available in miui

It's not the same mate. Private dns in pie use DNS over TLS which is encrypted and more secure. Also you can use adguard dns in private dns to block ads so you don't need to use any adblocker app or even root your device to block ads system wide. To use adguard dns just put dns.adguard.com to that private dns.

Private DNS on setting on any PIE AOSP or any PIE Roms is systemwide.
The app itself only the application is affected and by using vpn.
The app is useless if you have the settings available on your device.
On xiaomi.eu when i press DNS the settings app crashes so i cannot set it.
Thanks, works fine here. But seems like I can't connect to internet when using CloudFare dns so I changed to Adguard and it works fine. Both wifi and data has no connection after connecting to CloudFare dns. Btw good sharing!
