I don't think that it needs activation, since you are gonna use it for GSM. You will not be able to use it on CDMA though, needs to be programmed.

Please DO NOT buy unactivated phones... It will NOT have GSM part open yet... My DroidMINI is lying useless due to that and my DroidMAXX is working great (MAXX is like new used one)...
Droid Maxx in India
Here is another update.
Another XDA member got a new Droid Ultra last night. It did not work on GSM and it seems the activation on VZ got through (I don't know how). But when checked with VZ global support, they verified the phone and SIM are not associated with any account.
Anyway, GSM did not work. Then he tried Reliance GSM and it worked for a few minutes for calls and data.
Calls could be made and received. And then, suddenly there was an "invalid SIM" message.
So, who is blocking this? Verizon? or Reliance?
Another source tells me that the IMEI has to be cleared for international use. So VZ has to release this IMEI so that Indian companies can verify it to be genuine and not stolen, or invalid.
Now, the only way to get that done is with some insider contacts in Vodafone, Idea, Airtel or Reliance.
^^^^
I don't think it has anything to do with Indian operators... Everything has to be done from BigRed end, afaik... I don't think Indian telecos are following International database of BadEsn / IMEI...
This is all very strange... I THINK that the bad ESN is just relevant to verizon, and I also THINK that verizon is not involved in this. Or maybe they changed something. Also it is strange that for a while the phone worked and then not. I would call your provider and ask why.
It was clearly said that verizon is blocking only SIM for US carriers before. Also, HOW would they unblock it by registering in their network? If you connect to your local provier, verizon is completely out of the connection process. That would mean, that there is some software/firmware thing in our phones that is blocking it (read try unlock bootloader and flash another rom = last chance)
I traveled to India (Bangalore) a couple months ago. I used an Airtel SIM card while I was there, and it worked great. Of course, my phone had already been activated before I went.

XDA member Harsha has two Droid Ultras. One of them works and the other does not. So he took the IMEI's of both these phones to a local carrier Vodafone to check.
The working phone's IMEI was found in their database when they checked. The other one was not found - reported as invalid or not found.
I checked that one with Motorola after that. Motorola's database has Harsha's name against that IMEI. So, that database has got that entry.

Unlocking bootloader and then flashing which ROM? This will just complicate the matter further, with Moto and Verizon both saying we have no role to play in this. They might not even help in troubleshooting further.
What I understood is that local carrier puts you on the network and in a few minutes, it realizes that the IMEI is not found/ invalid. So you are kicked off. That is why two people were able to use it for some time and then they were out.
I am not sure why data works for some of the guys though. It should not.

Yeah. Activated phones work without problems.
No need for unnecessary speculations... If the phone is NOT activated in Verizon, then its GSM part can NEVER be used anywhere... PERIOD...
Further I checked (here) my working MAXX's IMEI and not working Mini's IMEI too. Both are saying valid...

Well, the IMEI on those overseas sites will show as valid since it is a valid device there.
But if you visit an Idea/ Airtel/ Vodafone store and ask them to check the two IMEI's you will find that the phone which does not work is reported as invalid IMEI.
Harsha has tried this with Vodafone, since he has two phones as well out of which one does not work.
Also, it is not true that if the phone is not activated, then it cannot be used on GSM anywhere. We have several reports on XDA where people have used brand new devices on GSM.
we Got gsm working if any one got gsm working let us updated
GSM now working for most phones
So, Motorola confirmed that an entire block of IMEI numbers was missing from the GSMA database.
While the cause for this is unknown, they were kind enough to escalate this to the GSMA authorities and get the IMEI numbers included.
Now, Indian carriers have synced their database and most carriers are working, but some are still not with some phones.
It is not clear what else is wrong with some of the combinations of phones, SIMs and carriers, but so far out of the five phones which were not working, four of them are working (out of those a couple are not working with one carrier).
Some phones are working with pre-paid carriers only and not post paid.
My phone is employee edition and still not working with Idea cellular.
In fact, after doing a factory reset yesterday, even Reliance CDMA is not working now. Strange.
My droid mini is now working fine with my regular Airtel postpaid nano sim.
Please share which operator Sims are not working.

Droid series - some more missing IMEI blocks I suppose
So, yesterday, another person contacted me stating that he just got two Droid Ultra's (new, never activated) and these are not working on GSM.
With CDMA, the data does not work, but the calls work fine.
Now, I have consolidated a list of phones and the carriers against which they have been tested along with the type of SIM and the type of connection (pre/ post paid) and send this to Motorola.
Perhaps the new range of IMEI's is also missing from the GSMA. But I will get confirmation in a day or two on that part.

Update:
Did a full FXZ install using House of Moto 2.0.
Then, did a four corner activation bypass as per the video here (which is for the older Razr Maxx.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYcZYZPGO2s
I don't know if that helped or the FXZ or both. After pressing corners first in landscape and in portrait mode, both, several times, I actually was able to skip the screen to some other screen.
After following the remaining prompts, it took around a minute to search for networks. I manually selected Vodafone IN and it took a few retries to register on that network (I have poor indoor coverage).
I tried with my regular service provider SIM and that one showed the network instantly.
No tried to update anything using WiFi so far.

I bought a droid ultra on eBay and took it to costa ricaand when I put a local Sim card the device gets signal and mobile data works but I can't make calls or send SMS because it says nno service even I has signal bars
Hi, I've got a Z3 dual D6633 which I want to use with an EE SIM in the UK. I've tried a cut down microsim and been into the EE shop and tried one of their nano SIMs but both don't work correctly in the phone.
The cut down SIM makes a service phone.android.com or something like that continually crash and doesn't connect to the network.
The one I tried in the shop just doesn't connect to the network.
This is on 23.0.F.1.74 and .82 I noticed in the release notes for .82a fix for Yoga SIMs in Russia but don't know what the problem there was, but wonder if it is linked. All other UK Sims work including 3, Lyca, giffgaff, Vodafone, virgin just not EE. has anyone got an EE one working or had similar problems?
I did notice that an app/widget I use called phono to show network info and signal strength usually shows the IMEI when no SIM inserted or the MSISDN, however with the non-working EE SIM it just shows 00000 - not sure which field it is getting wrong. Oh and yes the SIMs work fine in all other phones I've tried.
I do need to try more tests on factory reset and removing phono etc but so far it looks to be a firmware incompatibility with EE Sims.
OK, so I did a few more tests and got hold of another nano SIM on EE.
So it looks like the 23.0.F.1.74 firmware does not like EE SIMs and the phone application constantly crashes. On the later .82 firmware it works fine. I was mislead a bit by going into an EE store and trying a SIM - they must have given me an un-provisioned SIM to try. I stupidly assumed they would have actually given me a SIM that worked, doh!
I'm experiencing something similar here. I have the D6633, bought in UK, now I am in Brazil and the phone works great except that it won't connect to the 4G/3G/2G/LTE network. I can make calls, send sms normal. But internet only over wi-fi.
I called my operator, they say the phone is configured correctly, I tried my brother's sim card from another operator and the same happens.
So, the phone is clearly unlocked, if not it wouldn't recognize the sim cards at all. But no connection to the internet...
Any suggestions? I already did four factory resets, I recovered the Rom using sony software...

Hello, I have the exact same problem. How did you get the firmware .82/for what country? Is everything working well with it? Really appreciate your guidance.
I had the same problem with the EE sim card, ended up sending the phone back.

I purchased my D6633 from Saudi Arabia and the 23.0.F.1.82 update came as an OTA notification about a week ago.
If you look in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/general/d6633-z3-dual-updated-to-23-0-f-1-82-t2929352/ it mentions that someone thinks the update has only been released for Saudi and Brazil - I assume it is for Europe as well as one of the release notes says a problem with Russian Yota SIMs has been fixed. I think there are also links to the firmware in there although I've not looked that hard as I got the OTA. I guess it might still in my memory - anyone know where Sony stick their OTAs?
Seems to work fine so far - no noticeable difference - well other than EE SIMs now work!

Ah, shame as it looks like the update might have fixed it. I was thinking I might have to go to another handset too (The Samsung G900FD is OK if you can put up with touchwiz and other Samsung "features"!!)

Hmmm, sounds like another issue as with mine the EE SIM caused the phone.apk to constantly crash/restart.
Did the data work OK in the UK?
As you can make calls/SMS I assume you are at least on a 2G network which should still give you (very slooow) data - It does sound more like an APN issue - or something else. I know you said you checked with your operator what their APN settings should be (just my experience with operator customer support lines) - but I would try and have a look yourself - and maybe list your APN settings and operator and someone may spot something.
I have seen a couple of phones / operators where the "APN type" in the APN settings needs specific settings - its down the bottom and often isn't mentioned when people get the settings. For example in my current settings I have "default, hipri, dun, supl" for Virgin mobile in the UK.

For mine, on my networks here in Australia, I can assign 4G LTE to any sim, however, that makes the other sim 2G only (GSM).
The other option is to have both at 3G (WCDMA/HSPA).
If you assign 4g to sim one that work only for 4g or like other phones "LTE(preference)/WCDMA/GSM"
4g not available automatically search 3G if 3G not available automatically search 2G?
Assume second sim is on 2g

Does anyone know if i need to update any settings or firmware from factory to make it compatible. I can see iinet and truphone lte networks (which i assume is the optus 4g network) when searching manually but the phone wont connect. Sims work in a mates iphone6 without a problem.
Don't suppose anyone knows how to get rid of the #sim card icon on the statusbar?

Have you managed to root it? I rooted the 23.0.1.f.0.96 firmware for my Z3 D6633, but after a while (half a day) it starts to reboot frequently, and Google Play stops working (can browse apps, but not download them, as the download bar never progresses).
Also, my EE sim seems to work, but the phone still shows it as 'Sim 1 0000000' whereas other sims simply appear as sim 1 and sim 2.
I am wondering if I should just downgrade back to 23.0.F.1.74 and move from EE to Vodafone or 3...
Ah, work forced a BlackBerry (yuck!) on me and I've since sold the D6633.

I attempted to activate esim on t-mobile postpaid that did not go anywhere even though others have activated esim on pixel 3 before the t-mobile ban on postpaid accounts. T-mobile has stopped enabling esim on postpaid accounts for unknown reasons. It only enables esim on certain prepaid accounts and only on iphones.
Any other experiences with t-mobile or other carriers?

called t-mobile and gave them the full esim number. Then uses this guide. Works great!

I got it activated on my Pixel 3a XL through chat. They asked me why I was changing sims, and I just told them I wanted to try out esim. They said ok and did the swap. I'm postpaid.
It's easier through chat because of the long EID number.

I use an ATT MVNO Sim when I am not in a t-mobile area which is rare. I don't need two phones any more. One can do the same for the latest iPhone.
Actually there are other phones that have two sims like one plus, but two sim phones are rare in the USA but common in other countries. It has to do with the carriers. It would really nice if this feature discussed on the link below is included in android Q.
https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/...s-half-baked-dual-sim-support-to-the-pixel-3/
So two sims phones hopefully will become the norm in the USA since iPhone has this option and everyone copies Apple. Anyway I could be wrong but I think the Pixel had the esim before the iPhone.

I'm self employed and having dual sim is huge for me, no more having to carry two phone is big. This implementation sucks compared to real dual sim where you can have both active but it's still ahead of packing two phones around.

So at the moment, does your Pixel have DSDS capability? And if not (or before you enabled that functionality), are you at least able to take advantage of the physical sim slot by selecting it under network settings as the preferred option when you want to use the ATT network rather than the esim?
I had been using OnePlus phones with their dual SIM functionality for a long time by always keeping a T-Mobile SIM in one while using my China Mobile SIM in the other during my frequent trips into China. This enables me to keep a local number and avoid the internet censorship that is increasingly prevalent is most areas of the country.

Also. Currently using dual SIM in China. You will need to do the following to make network work reliable with all apps. This is a problem with pixel phones.

Also. Currently using dual SIM in China. You will need to do the following to make network work reliable with all apps. This is a problem with pixel phones.

Thanks for replying. However, I didn't really get an answer to what I was looking for. I had also previously read the article in Android Police and I know what DSDS is. My previous OnePlus operated as such. The article suggests that DSDS is no longer an option unless you elected it in an earlier beta release. HOWEVER, I only want to know whether you are able to choose one or the other between your eSIM and your physical SIM slot? You will not get both signals at the same time. I understand that. But I'm just interested to see if I can elect via Settings to choose either the eSIM or a separate SIM card and use that one only.
With respect to the contents of the evil42.com article, I fortunately don't have those problems. Thanks for your help.

Thank you for confirming!
Is it the same as Pixel 3a? DSDS? or DSDA as per rumor in Feb https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-4-dual-sim-rumor/ ?
I found this incomplete doc from T-Mobile eSIM settings: Google Pixel 4. It mentioned '10 profile'. Would this a doc copied from iPhone and it is not completed?

Same as the 3a. That's a very old article when they were talking about DSDS on the P3 which never came to be with one IMEI. As for DSDA here's the quote from the first article which should help clarify it for you. The P4 does not have two radios either.
Lastly, there’s Dual SIM, Dual Active (DSDA), in which both SIM slots can be actively used for calls, texts, or data simultaneously. Although the Pixel 3 doesn’t have the hardware to support DSDA (it lacks a second radio)....
Yes, the Pixel 4 supports DSDS.
How many IMEI provisioned on pixel 3a? Android police have a post showing 2 IMEI labeled on pixel 4 XL retail box.
The 3a has two, it was updated to DSDS in software a little while back.
FWIW, there is an article on Ars about how Google is going to not only support DSDS on the P4s, but actually enable them if you're on Fi (I am).
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/10/google-fi-will-soon-connect-you-to-two-lte-networks-at-once/
I pre-ordered my Flame through Fi, 'financing' it over 2 years, and it arrived today. As soon as I opened it, I popped the instructions, and this is what it says in there:
It works, I activated it with my T-Mobile physical SIM and Project Fi eSIM. I was very excited to finally have this for about 2 hours, then I found out it broke my visual voicemail. WHYYYY GOOGLE WHYYY must you always ruin everything with some bizarre quirk?

I'll bet it broke RCS too.
Sh...... you're probably right.
It has to do with carrier provisioning. With most dual SIM phones there's an option where you can choose which SIM is used for voice, data and texts. You need to make sure your line with visual voicemail is utilizing the same service for data also. There is same issue with MMS which will hinder any group text capabilities. I have been trying to figure it out for years. Inhave found best use scenario for me is to keep everything on primary line and switch to data on a need only basis with second SIM. Voice and texts will still work with second SIM whenever needed.

You've had dual SIM phones for years? Which ones, just curious. Were any of them esim?
eSIM is brand new, so never had dual with it. This might actually be the first device with both. I think my first dual SIM was Huawei Mate 8 in 2015.

Yeah dual physical sim has been around for a while mostly outside the US. I don't use visual VM so I can't attest to that. But dsds breaks RCS no matter how you have it set up under network settings. Very frustrating but that's on my 3a. Hopefully on Thursday that will change with my P4. Not holding out a ton of hope though.
It may *not* break for people like me, who use Fi and will have it provisioned for DSDS using physical SIM as well as eSIM, but both using Fi as the provider.

That is entirely possible. But you won't know that for some months yet. In the meantime Fi with Verizon physical is kaput.

Pretty sure, and I am also sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but Verizon branded (bought from Verizon, or anywhere else as a Verizon variant) have the eSIM disabled by Verizon.
Using an unlocked version on the Verizon network should work fine.

We were talking about RCS at the time, not DSDS. You couldn't get RCS working with Fi and Verizon but now it's been figured out. Sort of. What I have found is that if I change everything over (sms, voice, data) to Fi then reboot I can get RCS with either Fi or Verizon and even change back to Verizon as the defaults. But if I reboot with Vzw as default I lose RCS. I have to go back and redo it all, reboot and then it sticks until the next reboot.

eSim was disabled on the P3 and the 3a (XL too) on Verizon branded phones. Someone said a P4 / XL Verizon bought phone can use the eSim just not with Verizon. I've not seen actual confirmation of that, only one person. So if anyone bought the P4 / XL from a Verizon store or online please post if eSim is available with another provider.
Well I have bought an unlocked phone from Fi and went to Verizon to get a physical sim and got it working. Loving it so far, but can confirm that the RCS issue works like @bobby janow stated. I can't get it to work with Verizon default after reboot. Has to be fi to get it to work until next reboot.
Can you have a different ringtone for each line/SIM?
Got my AT&T variant today. Doesn't look like eSIM funcationality is enabled. Second IMEI and eSIM shown but greyed out and no way to activate. Is this true? If so, does anyone know if unlocked version allows for eSIM use so you can get dual sim? I need dual SIM for both US (AT&T) and international travel (Singapore).
no dual sim on unlocked version either

Really? Why put the eSIM in if you're just going to disable it?
well that's a bummer. Hopefully someone will come up with some firmware or we'll see a country release the 4G version of the phone that will work in the US and support dual SIM. I do, however, use wifi calling a lot and right now the iPhone seems to be the only choice that can be AT&T wifi calling compatible and dual sim.
Thanks for letting me know - i also had an order for the unlocked variant that I will cancel.

Pixel 4/4XL unlocked versions (as well as bought thru AT&T) will do Wi-Fi calling and HD Voice on AT&T (sometimes requires a little work on your part to bug AT&T).
Also, I cannot find anyway to do Wi-Fi calling on the Flip, let alone HD Voice, though it is perfectly clear with calls I have made so far.
I bought the ATT version of the flip so getting wifi calling. I didn’t think Pixel 4 was dual sim? Before various bans, I had decent luck getting HD voice on Huwawei phones but never WiFi calling unless ATT firmware (or iPhone)

Typical AT&T treatment of BYOD with regards to Wi-Fi.
Pixel 4's are physical SIM and eSIM.
Basically you can (if you find a tech who can/will) provision the account with an IMEI that supports those features, and your SIM is current, it will/should work. My 4XL is currently set up like this (and previous Pixels as well).
Thx didn’t know about the pixel 4 - I did the same thing with IMEI numbers. I bought a cheap galaxy phone from ATT for the sole purpose of having an IMEI that shows ATT. It won’t help WiFi calling which needs firmware support but has consistently gotten HD voice to work. Hopefully a different variant of the flip will show up with dual sim support that can be used on the ATT network

Slightly off topic, but if you have a minute, could you post where the setting(s) for Wi-Fi calling actually are (if there is any), I'm curious to see if they are on mine (I can't find any as of yet).
Thanks.
It gave me the option to setup when I ran. Y hone setup. It’s all under connections in setting or you can search setting for WiFi calling. I believe this is only available with the ATT firmware

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something obvious, and yes, seems its only on AT&T branded device(s).
On the unlocked version, I was able to access the hidden SIM manager menu using Activity Launcher and enable the second SIM. However, even after doing so, it doesn't seem that I can do much with it.
I saw same you can see it but it's not really enabling it (under about phone, esim is still greyed out). I bought a European Version of the phone that is supposed to have dual sim enabled and is arriving tomorrow - I will report back if I can add my AT&T plan to the eSIM and use my SG SIM card on the second line and how it works. Even if I get that to work, i will have to give up wifi calling (since not an AT&T variant of the phone) and usually - Samsung pay doesn't work (but usually google pay does). i will report back. Love the phone but without the ability to use 2 SIMs, it will sadly be doing back.

I thought that the Wi-Fi calling piece was becoming more universally supported, regardless of variant. I have the unlocked version and Verizon Wi-Fi calling (and HD calling) are both working.
Hi, I got one in Czech Republic and the dual sim (eSim/normal Sim) dual standby. the setting for eSIM are under Connections>>Sim card Manager, there should be a section with eSIMS and you select 'add mobile plan' (in CZ you scan the barcode of the eSIM thats provided by the operator). Wifi calling is in the phone app under call settings and can be activated for both sim 1 and sim 2 at the same time
I got the UK version of the phone. I have an AT&T phone number on an eSIM and have the eSIM card (with the QR code). I removed the plan from my old device (a Galaxy Fold Dual SIM I bought in Singapore that worked fine with both SIMS) and then tried to "add the plan" onto my new flip. I scanned the QR code and get the message "Your mobile plan is already being used on another device. For more information, contact your service provider.: I called AT&T and advanced tech support added the new IMEI's(both physical and eSIM) to that number on their end but still getting the error. They were at a loss for a solution. Any ideas on how to fix this? Really love the phone though useless to me without the ability to use an eSIM for my AT&T number.
BTW, yes to calls over LTE (VoLTE) with AT&T SIM on UK variant of the phone and, not surprisingly, no joy on Wifi Calling
You need a new QR code from ATT. If you are using an older QR code it wont work.
Are both SIMs 3G capable?

I gonna buy the UK model and so I can use both my personal and company numbers on one phone.
My company's number is nano sim and the supports 3G and 4G
My personal number is esim and supports 3G and 4G
Neither my personal nor company number network support 2G.
I read somewhere that while Z Flip is dual sim, one of the sims only support 2G. is that right? Can anyone confirm it?
went to AT&T store, moved my old esim (galaxy fold) to a physical sim, activated and tested on physical SIM then converted it again to eSIM (new QR code). Worked! Had trouble going from eSIM to eSIM but converting to physical SIM in the middle of the process (something I read on another forum) fixed it.
