Hello all:
This is my first foray into rooting/roming and I am liking it so far.
But now I have a few questions
here are my specs:
Verizon Galaxy S III
Hyperdrive RLS15
TWRP
Titanium backup
busyBox - not sure what this does
So, here are my questions
1)
This whole rom /modding thing is fun as s#!+.
I want to try other ROMs. Is there a way to install a different ROM without having to re-install all of my third party apps all over again?
2)
I like the Hyperdrive ROM but I would like to add and remove some of the features I installed when I loaded the ROM initially.
Is there a way to change my configuration without having to start from the beginning and having to re-install 3rd party apps?
3)
Apparently this ROM has a battery calibrator built in that I can run in terminal.
Can anyone tell me what it actually does
4)
What is BusyBox and why do I need it?
Thanks in advance for all your help and all the work this community does

1. Basically no, the fastest and easiest way to get your apps back is using titanium backup. It's even recommended to not even restore with tb if you switch from touchwiz and AOSP or vise versa.
2. Hyperdrive uses aroma and this is true for any rom running aroma, but to change your features you simply have to reflash the rom. Then while you're in aroma, simply deselect all the features you don't want anymore, but if you forget to mark something you already had it'll go away.
3. Can't help you with this one, try searching the development thread.
4. Busybox is basically a terminal (if you can call it that?) that runs with Linux. It basically gives your phone the ability to run a vast majority of basic commands that would otherwise have to be manually entered into a terminal. It's a stripped down version of a full Linux kit, so it's designed for more stripped down environments such as mobile and tablet devices.

So, do you mean to say that I can back-up and restore only my apps when I either change roms or re-install the current rom?
But if I switch from a TW rom to an AOSP rom then restoring those apps via TB is NOT reccommended?
-- I mean I can back-up and restore all kinds of things, but I can b/u the apps by themselves?
And thanks so much for your reply
You can use alternatives to titanium backup for backing up your apps.

I think titanium is great for backing up apps, and yes, if I'm switching between touchwiz roms or the same rom I'll use titanium to restore user apps with data. But if I went to an AOSP rom I'd only restore the app itself mainly because of the different android versions, most apps such as games should run normally, but restoring data will sometimes cause issues with a rom. You'd have to do a lot of battery stats hunting to get rid of some of them. If you didn't restore data, your system would be pretty clean, and new data would be written for the apps you use as you use them instead of restoring them from a different version.
I would never in any case restore system data, unless I'm reinstalling a clean flash of the same exact rom and build I was on.

So, in my case, I would like to re-install the hyperdrive rom to add some other features and remove some features. Should I do a system data restore or would that not be a good idea?
What does a system data restore do for me? pros and cons?

If you dirty flash without a factory reset your data will stay intact even after a reflash.
Stuff that's included in system data are contacts, text messages, call logs, etc. I usually never restore that stuff, and just let Google restore my contacts from the cloud.
It generally isn't a good idea, but it shouldn't be a problem going into the same rom. It's up to you whether to do it or not.

you can restore apps coming from AOSP to TW or vice versa. Ive never had a problem anyway when i used to flip flop back and forth.
I always select user apps and not system apps though.
You can use sms backup and call log backup to restore messages and call logs. theyre great apps.
thanks
thanks everyone for all the advice and tips.

Hi -this is actually in response to a comment on another thread, but I wanted to be sure to reach you and figured if I commented on a thread you initiated you'd get a notification. I just got the S5 mini and it's driving me nuts - I primarily use it to listen to music and it skips/stops the song if I so much as breathe. I cant use it for jogging or even listening while walking, which means it's useless to me. Did you ever find a solution to the sensitivity factor - screen protector, case, etc.........? I may just return it. Even if I twist my hand the tiniest amount it happens, and it doesn't just skip - it turns the song or even the page off completely. I literally haven't been able to listen to one single song all the way through since I got it - even when it is laying down flat. Help!
hey:
weird way to contact me, but it worked.
i never did figure it out. i didn't try a screen protector either, i just hate them.
i just end up being annoyed at the thing.
I hang-up on people with my cheek, i inadvertently open or close apps. i am constantly opening the recent app menu (though i finally found a way to re=map that damn key)... so basically i'm stil unhappy, but i have a year till my contract expires so i'm living with it.
as an aside I somehow changed a setting, disabled my wi-fi, then lost root and can't seem to re-root or enable the wi-fi

Hey guys, i am interested in maximising my HTC One Mini 601s storage space and have seen this but i am unsure if i would be able to use it on my phone, or how to for that matter.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348256
Straight out of the box the storage is 5.2GB / 16.00GB used and id love to remove the bloatware apps but for some reason using titanium backup with root access wont get rid of them (they just appear again after reset)
Im pretty novice in the ways of android at the moment so i dont want to go deleting files using root explorer and brick my phone.
I thought about putting on the magio rom, but i hear it can potentially be unstable or mysteriously drain battery life.
I guess what i am asking is, what is the best way to bring my phone right back to stock android, remove bloat and maximise space?
I'm using Magio R3 and haven't had any battery issues. For me the best version of android for our phones, though I only used stock for a couple of weeks before rooting. I'm able to use the JMZ kernel which has some nice touches, and I don't suffer any wierd bugs. Though with this version a few paid apps are blocked from play store. But easy enough to grab else where and send them a cheque in the post. Magio has some apps removed but not all that can be. I'm still testing which can be removed and which can't.
Anyways.. Only had a glance at this rom cleaner but it might just be for Samsung phones. You wanna search for a HTC one. Personally I don't like these system app removal scripts. They always take something you use and leave stuff you don't. Plus they can still brick your phone if not specifically designed for your phone.
Personally I make a nandroid backup and use Titanium Backup to remove system apps. If you find an app your unsure about Google it, there are a lot of descriptions for all the htc apps on Google.

Thanks for the reply Ruffbuster,
Ill keep away from ROM cleaners since i can only find a htc one x version.
I don't think i am ready to replace a kernel, but installing the Magio rom could be on the cards later.
I have two questions though
1) Can i completely 'format' my internal storage before i put on the rom, or will that just brick the phone
2) Any idea why Rooted Titanium Backup cant uninstall bloatware (they just re-appear upon reset)

When you are i recovery ready to flash your new ROM, if you want to COMPLETELY loose all your user data, then you wipe a factory reset, then FORMAT data, it will ask you to type "yes" to make sure you actually want to do this....
You can't get rid of the system apps as the system is write-protected - this can be made read/write by either s-off (advanced) or flashing a custom rom (Magio) with the custom kernel built-in.
To debloat, check my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2568061
Say thanks if this helps!!!
You both deserve a thanks, I didn't see that button haha.
Okay so turning S-OFF, I can only assume doing so will also practically roll out a red carpet to hacks and viruses, and that unrevoked forever app seems to make it easy to turn it off, but instructions are vague at turning it back on.
Just out of curiosity, is there a wiki for general android hacking and terminology?
And i will try your custom romcleaner file, it sounds promising since you recommended it to someone with a HTC One Mini
You guys are great, thanks for being so helpful
I assume you are rooted? If so, I can give you a step by step guide to s-off, back to s-on etc - it's easy to do, I've just taken out all the tech talk etc....
You won't become open to hacks, viruses - quite the opposite in fact, as you will be able to install adware and malware blockers etc.
PM me if you want to try....

Yeah dude i rooted it and its got superuser 1.0.2.8 installed
Perhaps later, its 11PM and im on painkillers for an ear infection so its not the prime time to be messing with my phone
Is there anything wrong with using moonshine/rumrunners/unrevoked
they seem fairly straight forward methods
I'm not keen on that method - the binary involved, revone, is 400kb, rumrunners download is 25MB.... Personally I'm not keen on "wizards" doing things you can't control.... Plus, you never learn if everything is automated... Hehe! Either way, feel free to give me a shout if you want advice or help.... Take it easy....

although i did get an "error code 2" after inputting "./revone -P" , i just carried on with the reboot then the next command "./revone -s 0 -u"and another reboot and it still worked successfully

I'd like to try and fix my battery issues by doing this:
1. Creating a backup of all my settings, apps AND media (so pics, vids, music etc) with Titanium Backup Pro or any other application that's able to do this.
2. Then wipe my whole phone, like it's fresh out of the box.
3. Install 38r OTA and then restore all my apps, data and settings.
Please someone, guide me in the right direction on how to do this. Thanks!!

Use Titanium to backup your apps, messages, settings, etc. Copy all of your important data (including the Titanium Backup folder) to your PC. Completely wipe your internal storage. Copy everything back (including the 38R ROM zip). Boot into TWRP and perform a full wipe (system/data/cache/dalvik cache), flash the ROM zip. Boot up, download Titanium, restore everything you backed up.
But, you realise that by doing this there's actually no point to doing it, right? If you're just going to replicate your previous setup by restoring everything with Titanium then you've undone the complete wipe you've just performed. I think all you should backup with Titanium is your user apps and your sms/mms. You'll need to set up your system settings again but that's probably the part that's going to rectify whatever battery issues you were having.

By the way, it's an outrageously hilarious coincidence that your username is TheHighLife and you posted your thread at exactly 4:20.

You thought that was a coincidence? I rarely post threads on timestamps other than 4:20
Thanks for your reply! I'll make sure to follow your advice. So, I'll only backup my apps in titanium backup, correct? I don't care about losing my texts cause I rarely text and when I do it's not important enough to keep them anyway..
Why would I copy the 38r rom back? What I wanna do is going back to stock (25r), then OTA to 38r + restore my apps and media. I previously side loaded 38r cuz I couldn't wait for the OTA to roll out in my country, and it was a modified zip because I was rooted at the time.
Oh and where can I find my backed up apps with titanium? I saw a folder full of zip-like files but no apks..
Thanks again for helping me out

If you go back to 25R you'll have to take several (four) OTA's to get to 38R again, you can definitely do it that way if you want to. It's just easier to flash the 38R ROM zip and it has exactly the same effect as taking all the OTA updates, without all the hassle.
Titanium doesn't backup your apps as apk files (they're archives), that's why there are no actual apk files when you look there. The location it backs up to is /sdcard/TitaniumBackup, it backs up your apps and their data in that location. So you must have Titanium installed once you're set up again in order to restore it all.

Aha, thank you for clearing that up. I'll flash the 38r package after going back to 25r instead of the OTA's then.

Just a sidenote, if you truly want to track down your battery issues: install BetterBatteryStats and read on all those guides/threads pertaining to it, it'll teach you how to address common wake-locks, and thus increase battery life. Ideally you'd want to revert to stock (factory-reset) and install apps one by one, until you find out the culprit or rule out certain apps. Use greenify to hibernate apps, to increase battery life, and set up tasker profiles to turn off wifi/data connections when screen's on and stuff. How you use your phone also affects battery life (high brightness would obviously drain more battery than mid/low brightness).
There's a plethora of reasons why your battery life might suck, so if you're still having issues after going stock post more information like how much battery life you get currently and such.
@timmaaa never mind, I was so tired I was trying to flash an update instead of the full ROM
@Exothermic I now have wakelock detector and battery monitor widget installed, I also got the greenify donation package but I'm unsure on how to properly use Greenify to my benefit. Would you suggest getting that app you mentioned or is the battery monitor app just fine? I'll take a look at the profiles, never had the chance to really look into them. The 1013 audiomix wakelock was constantly running before doing all this, i'll take a look if it's still there.
Thanks, both of you

Ahh, yeah I had a feeling that might have been the case.
Greenify is really easy to use, and it's extremely effective. All you need to do is greenify apps that have a habit of running in the background. I greenify a hell of a lot of apps (everything that isn't essential, anything that doesn't need to run unless I open it) because I have quite a few installed. Just use your common sense though, don't greenify the messaging app or you'll have trouble receiving messages, don't greenify the phone app for similar reasons, don't greenify anything that you want to get push notifications for.

The general perception is that a ROM needs to settle in, whether or not it's true though I have no idea. Let it run for a day or so and use an app like BetterBatteryStats to analyse what's going on with your battery, what kind of wakelocks you're getting, and what's causing them.

I know you all are going to think I'm ridiculous, but I bought 2 shield tablets for my kids ages 3 and nearly 2 for educational purposes. After weighing the Nexus 9, shield tablet and Sony's Z2 tablet the shield seemed to be the best value. My kids have a restricted profile with only the educational/learning apps that I have selected available to them. My question is how do I disable or uninstall the preloaded NVIDIA apps such as SHIELD HUB, the controller one, Twitch sharing, etc.? My kids will never use them likely for the usable life of the tablets and I don't need them poking around with them so I'd like to have them removed or hidden at the least. I have the tablets stock rooted with TWRP recovery and I've used Titanium backup on previous devices to do something similar before but it doesn't seem be to able to located the APKs of these apps to uninstall them.
Thanks for the help!
Go into Settings and then Apps, you can select which you want to disable and uninstall (will not always uninstall as its part of the system i think) This is what I have done as i dont want junk running when I dont need/want it to

I tried that first before resorting to Titanium Backup. The Disable button is greyed out and not available to click for these apps. These are like some super system level apps that can't be disabled or uninstalled the normal way.

My suggestion would be to root the device. Many apps such as Titanium require root access for full functionality. Once rooted you'll be able to remove anything that you want. I personally just use Root Browser to navigate to System/App and delete what I don't want.
The drawback to rooting is that you won't have automatic OTA updates. (Not hard to get past that, download the OTA file and flash in Recovery.) But for your use you might not want to receive OTAs anyway.

My tablets are rooted, I mentioned that in the original post. However, Titanium Backup was unable to uninstall them (thus my question here) saying something about being unable to locate the APKs. I'll try Root Browser manually like you suggested when I get back home to them later.
I'm fully aware of all consequences of rooting, OTAs, etc. Every Android device I've owned since the original T-Mobile G1 has been rooted, but I do appreciate your willingness to help!

Got it, I misread the part about being rooted and your experience on previous devices.
I stopped using Titanium Backup a while ago. There are simpler means of restoring apps and restoring data is likely to cause headaches. That said, the problem seems odd. As far as I know, all apps install to either /system/app or /data/app, That being the case, can't imagine why TB wouldn't be able to find them.
Are you by any chance running Multirom?

Not running MultiROM, just stock with root. I thought it was odd that Titanium couldn't locate the APKs too, that's why I decided to ask here. I suspect if I go cruising around /system/app looking for these APKs to remove I won't find them there.

You would be correct about them not being in system. Look in /vendor/app. Should be what you want.
Hi guys, I'm desperatly seeking help here.
I just rooted my n5 and I decided to install a custom rom (Resurrection Remix). I managed to have it run perfectly on the device but here's the problem, when I tried to restore apps and data from titanium some applications didn't install showing "App not installed" (the actual message is in italian but I think you get what I mean). I have unknown sources active so I thought it must be a kind of bug of the rom and I tried installing CM12.1. Obviously I'm not that lucky and I got the exact same issue with the exact same apps (eg Monument Valley PAYED from the Amazon App Shop and another couple of apps that worked fine before).
I tried wiping cache and dalvik via twrp but nothing. Even if I try to restore the app from the amazon shop (or reinstalling the apk of the other ones) it still won't work.
Flashing factory image of course fixes it but I want a custom rom and I don't think I can have it at this point.
HELP
I'm not sure what is causing the issue, but a workaround you can try is to convert all your app+data files into a flashable zip (its an option in titanium backup) and try to forcefully install them by flashing that zip in recovery.

You can also get rid of TB and use mybackup pro, my opinion, works much better

I've used TiBu for years and it has never failed me. In what way do you think mybackup is better?
I just checked the features list and honestly there is barely any difference. It offers a few small things like setting multiple backup locations, and other small rather trivial (imo) things, whereas titanium backup offers major features like restoring data through zips. Each to their own, however.
I FIXED IT
Since I've seen this is a common problem I'm gonna share the solution.
So, let's start off by saying the problem is a bug in the choice of the installation directory, you have to change it to "internal" and not to "auto" which is impossible via app settings so you'll need the adb shell.
I'm not going to say how to get all that stuff done but it's pretty easy.
Once you have root access on the phone you should connect it via usb, open a cmd prompt and type:
adb devices
adb shell
su
su -shell
pm set-install-location 1

If you want to check simply type
pm get-install-location
Click to collapse
and you shall see
1[internal]

That's it. Fairly simple all in all but it took me a looot of time to get it to work.
