Demo Units At Verizon and Best Buy - Google Pixel 3 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

I just stopped by my local Verizon store, and my local Best Buy, and both had demo stations set up.
Some quick impressions:
The build quality is very nice. The matte etched glass looks better than I was expecting.
The notch looks much better in person. It's really not bad at all. I think everyone is reacting to close-up photos blown up on their monitor, and don't think about the real-world size of the device. However, the Verizon demo app running on the XL has the background of the notification bar blacked out to hide the notch.
The "chin" isn't that bad either (for the same reasons), especially given the trade-off of getting front-facing speakers.
The "Not Pink" is very subtle, but doesn't really look that good to me. However, that is a purely subjective opinion, and others may think it looks great.

Plenty of people are saying that the notch "isn't so bad" when the phone is in your hands, and while I'm more than happy to agree I'll say this - you shouldn't be spending this kind of money on a product that has something that "isn't so bad". The 128GB variant costs well over $1k with taxes included.. I shouldn't be settling for much when spending that kind of money on a smartphone. Headphone jacks, Micro SD compatibility, etc. are things that I am willing to forgive, but the notch might be a bit too much to swallow. We'll see, I get my Pixel 3 XL around the 26th. If I really can't stand it, it'll go back to Google and OnePlus will likely earn my money with their beautiful design and affordability.
Also, the notch doesn't seem so bad on its own - sure; but I'm sure most would feel different if they hold OnePlus' upcoming 6T in one hand and the Pixel 3 XL in the other. The teardrop notch will shame the Pixel 3 XL. Here's to hoping that the software on the 6T can somewhat match what Google's doing, as that's Google's biggest selling point.

I feel the same way as you do...but if this phone isn't rootable / ROM-able (because of this dam Titan Chip on Board)....it wont be the same as previous pixel/nexus devices.....that will likely be a deal breaker. It already has less battery, no additional ram, huge notch, no LED notification light.....not being rootable/ROM-able will be the straw that breaks the camels back.
Edit: I just came back from the Verizon store as well.....they had the phone in all 3 colors and the pixel stand. The phone looks nice. Lets just hope for root. Also the haptic feedback to me didn't seem better than the P2XL....I heard a few reviews online mention it was considerably improved and the Russian review even claimed it may be better than the iPhone's vibration motor. It didn't feel that way to me tho.

I went to a Verizon store today and check out the 3 and 3 xl myself. I have to say, I DO like it a lot! Like the OP said, in person, the notch is NOT that bad. Having said that, if anyone comes up with a way to partially hide it, I'll still be doing that. I didn't have long to play with it (on lunch from work), but here's what I got:
The screen is WAY better than the 2 xl. Way better. I did not notice any shift either. Compared to my 2 xl, it was definitely a huge improvement. Everything just looks better/clearer.
The glass back was actually pretty cool. You almost wouldn't know it was all glass. However, the matte finish ends just before the edges. That I don't like. The edges are smooth and somewhat slippery. They really should have extended the matte finish onto the edges.
The phone was definitely snappier. I have mine adjusted to .5 for all animations and such, and the 3 xl was much more smooth. I'm sure it will be super quick once that option is changed to .5 when I have mine in hand.
The chin is pretty much identical to the 2 xl. It does not bother me one bit. I would much rather have dual front facing speakers and a chin/notch/forehead than not.
I couldn't really test much else out as I didn't have time. As the OP mentioned, the dev settings were password locked, so, I couldn't play with the hide notch or animation settings. I will say that I was really on the fence on this. I wasn't even going to get one at all. I decided to last minute just to see, and send it back if I didn't like it. Now I'm excited for it's arrival next week. I think I'll be very happy with this.
All in all, it's a minor upgrade to the 2's. Even though the screen is much better, the speakers, and the camera's as well, it's not a huge difference. But, including the stand, my monthly payments are only going to be about 3 bucks more a month, so, to me, that's worth it.

To me the chin on the 3XL was about 1mm thicker the than the chin on the 2XL. Not sure why...but it is slightly bigger. I could tell thought that it wouldn't take me long to get used to the notch.

About 4 months ago, my cousin got his hands on a Pixel 3 XL since his company does QA testing for Google devices. When I asked about the notch at that point, he said that it really is not bad in person. He played with my OnePlus 6 and told me the 3 XL notch isn't any worse, in real world usage. And now the reviews, including yours, seem to agree with what he told me. Now I'm curious to go see one for myself.
I really don't mind the chin, personally, just because front facing speakers would be amazing. The single bottom facing speaker on my OnePlus 6 really is not good at all.
Unfortunately, the immediate deal breaker for me is the 4GB RAM. Especially at that $899 price point. I'm not a spec chaser, by any means. But 4GB, at least in my usage, is not enough. Looking at the RAM usage of my OnePlus 6, I average 4.2GB - 4.4GB on a daily basis with normal usage. With my 2 XL, I'd find that the system would have to close down processes quite frequently to keep RAM in check. This lead to many app redraws throughout the day. It slowed the phone down and got quite annoying. Since switching to the OnePlus 6 with 8GB RAM (6GB would have been plenty), those issues are resolved. So, while I'd love to get that Pixel camera back and wireless charging would be great, I simply can't justify the cost for a phone that will inevitably be slower than my OnePlus 6. I'll hold out to see what the OnePlus 6T offers.

I already ordered the XL, however I checked out the phones in Verizon as well and the regular 3 seemed really nice as well! I'd be totally fine with it

Went to a Verizon store, they had two Pixel 3 XL's (black and pink) and one Pixel 3 (white).
The glass on the front is a lot flatter than the 2 XL glass. The active area of the screen doesn't seem to come too close to the curved edges, so full coverage glass screen protectors should be a lot easier to design and attach compared to the ones for 2 XL.
The third item under Settings / Display / Colors is Adaptive instead of Saturated.
The new OLED screens are a lot more uniform than 2 XL screens. They look less grainy, I didn't see any colored splotches either. Whites appear somewhat cold / bluish when Natural is selected under Settings / Display / Colors.
Apparently, the screen lottery is still a thing for the third generation of Pixels. The black XL screen had a noticeable red tint when viewed at an angle, while the pink XL screen had a blue tint. The tint first appears at an angle somewhat greater than for the 2 XL, so I guess that's progress. The white non-XL also had a slight reddish tint when viewed at an angle, but it was a lot less pronounced.
(Comparison photos were taken at 100% brightness, natural colors, white and dark gray screen test image. Image quality is not great, as I was trying to dodge reflections and glare and keep the tethered display units in place.)
All 3 phones had 64 Gb of internal memory. Both XL's had Micron storage and the non-XL had an SK Hynix chip. All 3 units had Micron-branded RAM.
Android version was listed as 9, no 9.1. yet.
After seeing the demo units, I'm feeling OK about my black 3 XL 128 Gb order.

Do some more research before saying it can't be rooted. Nothing is unbreakable, it's a matter of time and effort. Without the phone in hand we know nothing.

Great post - thank you. What does Device State Locked mean? Is that network sim locked or bootloader locked?

Thanks - they are likely to be sim unlocked? Id really love to buy one next Thursday while in the US if I could.. I don't have the funds to pre order on google store till Thursday and even if I did I don't think it would be delivered to my hotel in providence in time.. id be afraid I wouldn't have it by checkout time Friday morning and have to leave without it. I guess the sensible thing to do is bite my lip and have patience for 1st week of November release in Ireland/Uk...
I'm not sure even if I knew someone with a Verizon account could they just buy one for me with my cash and hand it over or would they have to sign up to some sort of Verizon contract extension.. etc... my trip coming one week too early
---------- Post added at 11:50 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:57 AM ----------
i chatted online with verizon rep and they said most phones you can buy with one month sim once off payment with no contract.. she sad they don't have info on pixel 3 yet and that with new phones it can be some time before its available.. probably still worth my while checking a store when i get there thursday to see what options are

I never said its not rootable... I said it may not be. But yes we will have to wait and see. Deestroy from twrp has his order in so I'm hoping for the best.

God I hope there's no screen 'lottery' this time... That was not a post I wanted to see. The 3 and 3xl units I looked at were perfect. No shift whatsoever. Hopefully the demo units from the other post were just flukes. After 3 tries, my 2 xl screen is nearly perfect. I am NOT doing that again this time. If my 3xl comes and has bad blue (or red) shift, it's going back. Seriously, after last year, if Google hasn't done anything about quality control, I actually will likely be looking at other OEM's... I don't want to, but I'm not playing this game anymore. Anyway, I guess we'll see next week!

All the variants sold in the USA should be sim/carrier unlocked. There is only a few (or maybe only one) carrier in the UK who sold them with SIM lock,
However, I do not believe the phones will be available for sale until Friday the 19th, that is official release date I believe.

So i went to look at the demo units at my local VZ store and the notch isn't too bad and could probably live with it. from playing around with it is seems the software implementation around the notch is terrible. would it have killed them to round the edges on the top when the app didn't go into the notch area. it wouldn't auto rotate a little button to rotate showed up on the bottom when i rotated the phone and auto rotate was on i guess there was another option i didn't really look too hard for. The screen is nicer compared to my Pixel 2 XL i had with me, it goes more to each side edge so it does feel a bit bigger in that aspect but when an app stops at the notch it feels the same height, just my take on it.
One issue both demo units had that could be a big problem is the top left corner of the back the side with the camera felt squishy , when i pressed on it i could see it move i could even fit my nail under and it felt like it would start to come apart. I hope it just being a demo unit with those blocky brackets on the back adding extra stress to the back but it was only that corner.
Now im even more on the fence lol

Do be aware best buy only sells the Verizon variant, that will come with a locked bootloader, if they follow past history it wont be unlockable, at least for a long time, if ever.
If you plan to root and/or ROM the device you will need an unlockable bootloader to do so.
Also, you can do a one time payment for the phone online @ best buy site, no reason you cannot do the same in the store. Having said that, in the past, if you do one-time pay, they have tried to raise the price by $100. They tried it with me when buying iPhones, but you just tell them to check store.google.com and they have to price match.

Colour Choice & Shipping.....

Well being in Scotland only two colour choices available (Midnight Black & Orchid Grey) and although the black does look sleek, the Orchid Grey has a very nice appeal so that was my choice.....
Order placed as soon as i could & looks like a nice 20th of April shipping..
Looking forward to checking out the S8+ although being a smartphone junkie I'll flip & sell to buy the Note 8.....
What was your choice & did you rush to pre order?
Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Ordered the Midnight Black, my last 3 phones were Gold so I wanted a change. Hopefully I'll also receive it on the 20th, Three said the 29th when I ordered over the phone, but have it listed as a "get it early" incentive on their website. I'm in SW England btw and also only had a choice of Black or Grey. I wanted black anyway so no bother. Excited to try it out!
Haha I'm just like you, can't help but swap phones when something new and shiny arrives. I'll probably sell next year and get a Oneplus then upgrade again and so on...
The Note is too similar to the S range for me to trade for. Other than the S Pen of course. I had three phones last year and I'm currently using the Xiaomi Mi5S Plus. Shouldn't have bothered with this one, just wanted to try it out.
Ordered myself a black one and my wife a silver one through Best buy. Said I will be able to pickup in store on the 21st. Can't wait to try it out

The Black is Sublime & gave careful consideration, but being OCD with keeping my phone clean it would be in overdrive with smudgey fingerprints (always a clear case i know). Very much hope you enjoy your Black version (I'm sure you will) & you should as you pre ordered early get it on the date states on their web site.....
Being a Sky customer i opted for them as it keeps everything all in one bill....And they also have the 8 day early policy....[emoji2]
Hahaha in 3 years I've had about 30 phones it's craaaazy, i just get to tempted and then that irrational part of my brain wins every time lol.....
No it's not a huge gulf of a step up with the S7 Edge & S8+ but i also had the S7 Edge (Sold to buy the 3T) which I'm using now. Missed certain great features of the S7 so next progressive step was to buy the S8+ (there is some logic there)....
Hope you all enjoy your new S8's or S8+'s.....[emoji2]

I order the grey.
I always get black phones and was very mad about the note 7 crap since i had a black s7 edge and then back note 7, Then had to go back to the edge and tmobile stop selling the black ones so end up with blue. While i like blue it just isnt as smooth as the black.
But with the s8 being black on front and color on the back i didnt mind switching it so much.
Also the black look a bit funny to me. Kinda to plain i guess.
So yea with with grey and i didnt rush to preorder took my time and made sure it was worth the money i was spending.
I am trying to decide between black and grey (our only choices). The black does look a bit plain, and the grey in pictures looks a bit too pink and more like a girl colour, but I have heard a couple of people say it isn't like that in real life it's just the pictures. So I'm not sure. Also not sure which one will show fingerprints the black or the grey, probably black I guess as it will be more shiny. I will probably not be able to get to a shop to look at it before I pre-order tomorrow will will have to make a choice before then.
Ok I went for the black, I prefer how the black back blends in perfectly with the black on the front and sizes vs the other colours.....only to have carphonewarehouse then send an email 2 hours later saying they had cancelled my order....with no explanation at all. Rang them up and they still couldn't tell me why they had cancelled it.

Well CPW are a joke. After that first attempt, I ordered it again....this time 2 hours later I get an email saying it had been cancelled again, due to an "information mismatch". I know for a fact the details were all correct and were the same as the previous attempt. I then rang them up to find out wtf was going on, starting at sales who couldn't tell me the exact issue so they passed me on to the web team, who couldnt tell me anything because the order had been cancelled, so they passed me on to customer services....who cut me off. I tried one final time, and in the most hillarious email of all, got a reply an hour later saying it had failed and was cancelled once again "due to you failing the credit check criteria required by the network you selected." Credit check?!?! network??? I had not selected a network, all 3 times I had ordered the handset only, sim free, my order confirmations even confirm that. There was no credit check to be done! And if they HAD done a credit check, it would have come back as pretty much perfect anyway! Unbelievable. I then went and ordered it from John Lewis instead and it went through straight away, same 20th Apr delivery date, I just won't get the free £99 speaker. Frankly after this crap, CPW can keep the speaker! I would have considered ordering from EE (I am with EE) or from o2, but I don't quite trust that it would be unlocked from them, I guess it would be but John Lewis is doing the same delivery date anyway (and they had damn well better deliver it on that day since I will be waiting in for it from work!).

Yes I've heard mixed reports from CPW and similar circumstances to yourself, people getting declined credit check when they have a great credit rating. Also customer service is well below acceptable standards.
Personally i have had no desire to use them (Sky mobile just launched and it wraps everything up in a nice one off bill) i have sky broadband, phone, Sky Q and now Mobile (all went as it should).

I just went and saw the phone at Best Buy, because you just can't trust pictures to accurately portray the color these days. The orchid gray was more like gray with a hint of plum, very muted color, pretty much just a darker gray indoors. The black was far less shiny than the Note 7's black, so less of a fingerprint magnet, but still showed fingerprints more than the other colors. Coral blue and maple gold are not available here, so it looks like arctic silver is the color for me. I liked that color on the Note 7, but since the color wrapped around to the front it was far too blinding for me to use. Not a problem on the S8+.
Well I still haven't ordered yet, still not 100% convinced I can't just wait until the Note 8 comes out.

I much prefer the Note range but the S8+ is a beautiful device with enough to convince me to buy. That said i am a tech enthusiast & quite enjoy testing out as many devices as my wallet will allow. What i usually do is flip each device to buy the next (yes it means putting some added money in) but it works for me, plus someone else gets the enjoyment of whatever device sold..
So I'll be using the S8+ until the Note 8 and no doubt sell to acquire.....(it's how a roll.....[emoji12] ) my own upgrade programme.
Looking forward to getting a hands on look at the S8+ with what is a great design & will be a great device.
My honest thoughts are that Samsung perhaps should have went Duel Camera for the plus, along with 6gb Ram (just to separate from the regular S8)...
The fingerprint reader placement is perhaps Samsung being deliberately obtuse....[emoji12] thus forcing you to adopt their other two bits of tech (facial recognition, iris scanner).. this is not a deterrent obviously, but i really don't like it even before hands on,....
Overall I think Samsung should have placed just a bit more thought into certain elements and i think this will have a bit of a negative effect, but they have Excelled again in design, and UI is nice, Screen, come on the Camera was great in the S7 & Edge (So not a huge impact on me here), see how bixby performs and the overall feel.....
The Note 8 will be purchased though as i believe the force touch tech will be ready and fingerprint reader will be underneath the display.....[emoji3]

I'm with you there, the stylus isn't a deal breaker for me, but it's one of my top wanted features. There used to be more that differentiated the S and the Note series, I was more on the Note side back then.
As soon as I got the S8+ in my hands I went from 50 to 90% convinced that I needed to dump my V20. It just feels like future tech, while the V20 feels like something from 3 years ago. S8+ feels amazing and the display looks like nothing else out there.
I generally try to sell my old devices, but if I'm unable to find a decent price I have no problems holding on to it. It's always fun to go back to my old phones and see what Android was like back then. My GS1 still runs like a champ on an XDA dev's rom, forget the rom name, but it turned that phone from nearly unusable to quite competent for it's day.
Dual camera would have been nice, I'd definitely like to see what Samsung could do with that. The V20 has dual, but it takes pretty terrible pictures. My Note 7 took amazing pictures, so I'm pretty excited to play with the S8+ camera more.
I actually like the fingerprint sensor being on the bottom, like the V20. For the way I use the phone it's much more convenient for me, I'm just going to have to train my finger to not touch the camera. Most of the time I don't need to use it anyway since my watch unlocks the phone while it's close.

USA.
I've owned the Note 2/3/4 and this was the first phone I've been remotely excited about. I thought about waiting to see what the Note 8 had in store for us, but I don't use the stylus much (maybe once a week or less). I've held onto the Note 4 for so long because of the replaceable battery, with all the new models going to sealed backs, I figured I might as well get used to it. If I don't like the S8+ or just can't live without the Note 8, I'll give my son the S8+.
Ordered the arctic silver version.
note 8 will be wider. Only thing I'm hesitant about (even tho ordered!) is the width and the battery.

Exact same thing with me, I had a Gold S6 before, the black option looks amazing so I pre-ordered the phone in black. Shipping starts on the 20th and I was one of the first ever to pre-order it, meaning I will probably be one of the first to get it too :fingers-crossed:
Ever since the first leaks of the black variant I wanted to get mine in black, the color looks so amazingly slick and clean, an uniform piece of screen and amazing design
The note 8 will have curves the same as the note 7 did...which was wider than the s7.

I just returned my 6th S8+, the other forum member 12th. What the heck ?

Hi guys,
Story of my life. I preordered my S8+ on March 30th, received it on April 20th. Reading about pink tint I was happy not to see any. But what I got was green tint across the whole screen. On top of that the curved edges were really visible and had this glowing effect, as described in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/help/dark-edges-t3593730
I decided to return it and ordered another two units. The first one was completely pink, using the white balance sliders and the color calibration code (*#15987#) helped a little, but it was still pink. The other one had dead pixels near one of the curved edges and was greenish in one part of the screen. I returned all of them.
I'm stubborn (and like the phone design a lot) so I bought another three (this time I took some photos which I attached below). The first one had extremely greenish tint and as any other greenish screen the curved edges were really visible and had this glowing effect.
The second one was entirely pink including the pinkish edges and the third one was pink only at the top. Playing with white balance and color calibration did not help, only lowered the effect a little bit.
To make it worse one unit had splinter on the frame straight out of the box.
There is a guy on polish forum of S8+ who got twelve units of S8+ and only one was perfect: http://forum.android.com.pl/topic/314518-ekran-w-galaxy-s8-plus/?page=19#comment-5078692
Is it only in my beloved country so hard to get the perfect screen (by perfect I mean not pink nor green, without dead pixels) or were we so unlucky ? It seems almost impossible to get the good unit. I'm really tired of not being able to enjoy mine new device. I'm thinking about buying another 5 units from different sources. I will give it a last chance ...
PS. To make it clear - I'm buying new phones almost every year since 10 years and never had such issues. I had to replace one of my phones just once in my entire life! So I'm not that kind of person seeing issues everywhere, I'm just not agreeing to pay full price for a device with such flaws.

I feel you. I don't know what to say to help, but if it is any consolation I know exactly how you are feeling. A few years back I had a similar problem with the BlackBerry Passport. I ended up exchanging about 12 devices before I found one that didn't have flaws out of the box. I got roasted on the CrackBerry forums for it, but proof was all there. I simply got 12 broken devices out of the box... Seems unreal almost, but it happens.
I couldn't care less if there was a green or a blue or a pink or a yellow tint. It still does the same job.
Your best bet is to just wait until the first few batches are pushed out and just wait until samsung makes more phones..let everyone else buy up all the pink ones. This could take months though, maybe about 3. Either way, buying an AMOLED is similar to buying an LCD; you will get lucky if you don't get dead pixels or screen tint issues.

That's true but wouldn't an older device as well? People should be getting quality products for the price.

Don't see what the problem is regarding screen tint issue, Samsung is aware of it and said they can address it through a software update. I would've just waited for that and changed my screen color ratio in the mean time. Also the pictures you showed with the dead pixels, either I'm blind or it wouldn't honestly make a difference or you wouldn't even notice it in daily usage. Just my two cents

People should indeed get quality products for their money, but this seems to be a new obsession when it comes to new phones. People sitting there all day looking at a white screen trying to find an imperfection. If you use the phone day to day, there is no way you would even notice it.

When you pay $1,300 for something, like I did for my S8+, you want it to be flawless, at least physically. We all work hard for our money, one way or the other. I won't stand for throwing it away on a semi-defective device, no matter how small the defect.

I got a perfect device with the S8+, thankfully, on first go. Software wise, different story, but HW is flawless. It's hit and miss.
If they are going to start setting a precedent where they are asking for laptop money for a phone, then we need to respond by expecting that it at least comes as advertised. When we start dropping our standards while they keep raising the price, then we are all in for ever-increasing amounts of agro as they will just assume x% of people will just take it up the wrong-un and keep coming back for more. For this money, if there are any hardware defects out of the box, back it goes. But those are just my standards.
In response to the OP, sounds like you are ordering replacments from the same borked batch. I'd either find a new source or wait for the scruffy units to go elesewhere.

There is nothing subjective about having a color balanced display, no visible marks, flaws, or any other defects anywhere on the body, and no dead or stuck pixels. All ports and speakers work, mics all work, etc. No, physically perfect is not subjective. It's very much objective, based on factual observations about the conditions of the device. Besides, as the poster above has said as well, if they're going to be asking laptop money for a phone it better be flawless.

Your argument is still predicated on your interpretation of perfection, so that it is subjective! Feel free to dispute that further, lol.

This is a pretty comical comment. Your argument amounts to everything being subjective. Why is a square a square? Why is it not a triangle? Because a square has 4 equal sides and 90 degree angles connecting all sides to each other. That's not subjective; it is mathematically objective. The same way, a perfect display is one that is without defects. A perfect phone body is one without scuffs. You either have dead pixels or you don't. You either have scuffs or you don't. Your display is centered in the frame of the phone, or it isn't. Your display is using a proper white-point, or it is not. These are not subjective things. The state is binary.

That light bleed along the lower edge...

After trying and failing with the S8/S8+ I decided to go for the U11.
I ordered two phones from Amazon, one for myself and one for family. They were the amazing silver. We powered them on, and then noticed backlight bleed along the lower edge. The guy on this review is the only reviewer who mentions it and shows the problem:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/0...pretty-good-phone-if-anyones-still-listening/
Not only that, but both phones had a dead pixel on the screen (But I think that's just my bad luck . I took it on myself to watch reviews on youtube, and I think the lower edge problem has been there on every review unit, but no reviewer mentioned it.
I really am considering a switch to the U11, but I have a serious screen OCD so I wanted to put it to you guys... Do you all experience this? And is it terribly bad on every day performance?
Thanks

No shadow, no dead pixels (just went through a full pixel test - jeez this backlight will blind you on full!), no scuffed glass, nothing. It's the first device I've ever gotten from HTC with no complaints about the screen (my M7 had a yellow tint as did the M8 and the first few weeks of owning my 10, the glue hadn't settled so it was pink tinted and I had to have the Sprint store open up 8 EVOs before I found an acceptable screen to give you an idea - never had a dead pixel except on AMOLED ironically enough).
It's the Sapphire Blue.

Yeah out of all phones I've ever ordered, this one is by far my favorite. Ridiculous battery life, no lag, great screen, no gimmicks (edge sense is actually quite useful - I use it to launch my camera immediately when I'm out and about), excellent camera, doesn't overheat, crystal clear call quality, loud speaker set up... Only thing I don't like is News Republic chewing up my battery and not being able to disable it.
I haven't even rooted it yet. Every other phone I've rooted within a week, oftentimes the day I've received it. I ordered it May 16th from HTC on pre-order and got it on June 9th. No phone has ever been in my possession that long without being modded somehow, even if it was just changing the launcher.
The light bleed problem affected every review unit as you said, and there have been several threads here mentioning it. My conclusion is that nearly every U11 has the problem although it's rather subtle so not easy not to notice if you don't know about it.
Personally I'm rather OCD about screens and I'm not happy about this defect but I'm now used to it. The location is just one that you don't look at normally. In fact I think we've grown used to ignore the lowest part of the screen as it's where ads normally sit. Also it kinda helps that the bleed gets reduced a lot depending on the angle you look at the screen from.

I'm very OCD regarding LCD screen and the phone itself. The phone is perfect except for the light bleeding, a stuck pixel and some sound static in earphone. Otherwise the phone is perfect like the camera, sound, battery life and performance.
As I bought the phone from Hong Kong its a pain in the... To return it. So with a 10% discount off that seller gave me I learned to enjoy and love the phone.
My HTC One X, M8x, 10 U11 and the S8+ all suffered from flaws being the S8+ the worst (random restarting and pinkish screen tone) so I'm not a lucky person about phones.
@evak2979 i sent you a message but basically it's about accepting defeat when it comes to small flaws, unfortunately there's not more to it. Although of course, if your phone has serious build issues that no one else has it should go back to HTC.
I have is as well. Actually this is my second unit (Black), the previous (Silver) had it as well. I can see it in display test application but I would say it is not affecting normal usage. Overall I am happy with display quality.

Like I told my new pal on PM, I got the S8+ new for a very good price (539, UK).
If that sinks, I'll bite the bullet and return to HTC. It's funny because I don't mind scuffs, or scratches, or what. I just want a normal okay screen. I remember being happy with Note 4, with S5, With M8, With M9.
Then this new fashion started with every display being the dumbs
And the S8+ arrived with dust under the glass.
I've fought for a long time with my OCD to accept that AMOLEDs will never have consistent whites (though my one plus 3t is perfect, the one phone I've kept over the months). As of late with the S8 it's also been, full red edges, dead pixels, dust specs.
Let's try the U11 again. If it just has light bleed and no dead pixels I'll keep it...
I don't have light bleed.
I use edge to launch my calendar.
Sound through the earphones is shockingly good!
It looks dated in any other color but blue or red.
Those bezels? Ug.
The screen is beautiful and they've coated with oleophilics that feel INCREDIBLE.
The camera is excellent.
It's a very VERY good phone.
I have it on mine, but It's hardly even noticeable... Definitely not a game-changer for me. It's not enough for me to return it for a new one.
Just updating that I received my HTC U11 black, and I sent it back with a dead pixel. That's the third U11 with dead pixels, the first two having been silvers from Amazon.
I have also encountered issues with S8s (dust under glass), but not so much or frequent.
I want to get a U11 more than I do an S8, but I am really really skeptical about a few things - the build quality of the panel. The reports that some of the units are not so water proof (The solar reds apparently, a youtube search I did testified to that.
Sorry for diverting this thread from its original post, but I am really curious about you guys' opinion. I agree to having screen OCD, and that I should lower my standards when it comes to white consistency on AMOLED, for example. Or even some light bleed on LCD panels.
But dead pixels? Dead pixels on 649 pound devices, top end flagship? What is going on with QC and how lost must we drop our standards.
And if anyone thinks I am lying I am happy to provide with pictures...
If anyone from the UK has a relatively faultless HTC, please tell me where you bought it from so I can buy from there myself. And which color variant.
Thank you.
Hi, I believe you as I have the same problem with my Asian version. But can you share a picture? I want to compare mine with yours.

Thanks. I am considering getting a device regardless. I will ponder it over the weekend - and if you are OCD and can live with it, so must I. If you can help with advice on how to deal with such impulses (over screens), do drop me a message. I am desperately trying to drop that habit off.

Of course...Here. Same on all three, just in different positions.
Mine is in a similar position but it's not black. Indeed it changes according to the color but of course it's different from the rest. Mine is more a defective pixel than a dead or stuck one. I thought it was the same pixel issue but it's not.

Nah mine is dead dead.
I am considering a 4th U11. At this point, I don't even care about the light bleed. But 3/3 with dead pixels, it can't just be bad luck. That's the thing. I mean this is very bad QC. None of the reviewers are mentioning things like this. Or the issues with the S8 screen.
I think at this point someone needs to step up and say : ok guys, these are the GOOD things about the phone. But there is also
S8 (red tints, even after patch. Bad smudges on grey. Dust particles under panel)
U11 (Dead pixels. Light bleed at bottom of the screen).
In the end, the only trustworthy review is XDA forums and its users.

3XL First Nexus/Pixel not to keep?– Pink Screen,rattle,slow charge,sensitivity...

Pros:
It’s new. Looks a little nicer.
Can (at some point) take better pictures in the dark. The 2XL may get this?
Can answer calls for you. The 2XL will get this.
Wireless charging. But...
Screen is a little bigger, even without notch.
While the notch is ugly it does give you more space on the screen but do we really need it?
The sound is fuller. But…
Water resistant. But…
Cons:
With tax its $1100. With Charger and case it’s $1200
Google jerked me around for a month to get it to me.
They emailed there was a $50 Google store credit for ordering in the first few days but I ordered with Google Project Fi so that Google Store order I’m looking at is not a Google Store order. ???
It’s about $50 more and they are giving like $50 less this year for the trade in.
The Notch. It not so much that it is but what they gave up to get it. They should have just kept the same set up the 2 XL had and made the screen a little taller and wider. I’m ok with the notch as I’m one that wants the better speakers but they made one smaller and the sound is not the same and it’s the one you take calls (and use for the speaker phone?) on so I’d really rather they had not done this. It also messes up the screen when watching movies. On the 2 XL you can zoom most stuff a little a get full symmetric screen and not worry about burn in. But on the 3XL it chops off and squares the notch end. It just hurts my head for some reason, with the other end rounded.
Slow charging is still messed up. The 2XL has this issue somewhat but it will charge. A few times now I've come to find the 3XL has not charged at all and this morning it was at 49% but when I went to bed it was at 78% so what the heck?
The speakers do have a fuller sound but one is louder than the other and then there is the vibration. The vibration doesn’t bother me while holding it but there is distortion and a rattle like effect. I hear it in some of the notification sounds. If you go to settings, sound, advanced and then default notification sound, it should be Popcorn and every time at the end of it there is a rattle like buzzing. Not there on the 2XL.
The screen is pink. The 2XL is a little on the blue side but then the 3XL is pink. Mostly what you get used to I guess but I don’t like the pink.
Screen sensitivity. It’s really odd. Like I can double tap 4 or 5 times in a row and nothing happens but then it will work 4 or 5 times in a row. Like something is running in the background and it’s not see the touches. The fingerprint scroll is the same. Works for a time and then doesn’t. I also have issues scrolling up/down left/right once I’m logged in and using the phone. The 2XL is fine with this very basic stuff.
I've already seen pics of a few with glass backs broken. Wireless charging is cool but not sure if this is worth it.
I’m guessing none of these issues will be solved by software updates or swapping for another phone.
I think the 3XL we be worth even less next year than the 2XL is now.
The annual phone upgrade was a bummer this year.
So, return, swap, wait a month and get the 3XL again for like $800, keep the 2XL for another year or get the One Pulse 6T?

Easy answer for me..I canceled my 3xl and got the 6t. Saved a bunch and actually really like it. Maybe next year Google
I had to send back my pixel because it was getting choppy animations at the lockscreen. If the replacement has any issues, I'm returning the phone and waiting for the S10.

Pink screen do you have pictures? Honestly to me it does sound like you have a defective device. I have had no touch screen sensitivity issues some of the XL 2's had that as well but I know it was possible to improve/fix with software. I've been through 3 and incoming 4th pixel and so far all the screens have been great leaps and bounds vs my old XL 2. I've been trying to RMA for the earpiece buzzing during calls even on calls you could hear it if you put your ear up to the earpiece. Two of them were like this and the third one was 80-85% better so acceptable but it had the greyed out OEM unlock. Probably some derp at the factory put a Verizon phone into a Google box or flashed Verizon firmware on it so #4 is on its way.
You could be perfectly fine on the XL 2 and the One Plus is a good option with some sacrifices obviously. So the question is are you a Pixel/Google fan boy and are committed to their products and have to have the latest and greatest of their offerings? If yes, then I would say keep swapping out till you get one that is satisfactory to you so you can have their latest shiny. Do we need the extra screen space probably not but that's like asking do we truly need all these shiny extras . They're not really necessary per say, but they are nice to have! If no, then I would say go with the One Plus 6T as it is a solid bang for the buck if you don't mind the 1080p screen and no IP rating for water/dust resistance or no front facing speakers and a camera that probably won't be as good etc. No version 2 if you want to save money just stick with the XL 2 as most of the software features from the XL 3 will probably make their way down eventually. Hope this helps.
Here is a pic of the 2. The pink tint actually makes it a little harder for me to read the light grey text in the calendar.
Both are set to solid white backgrounds and 65% brightness and colors set to boosted.

Listings for OnePlus 7 Pro for 270$ on eBay, state that phone has LCD Burn/Shadow?

Is it worth the risk to try and pick one of these up if they are in good condition? Would there be anyway to fix it (except replacing screen)? Would this problem be noticeable for a low brightness user/ in general for someone who watches a lot of shows/movies/videos on their phone?
Here is the link for the OnePlus 7 Pro I'm considering

Honestly, I'd pass on this one & go with a new one from T-Mobile, they're only $450 from the carrier.
Yeah, it's a bit more, but, you're getting new vs used & a 1yr factory warranty.
If you're set on saving some $$$, I'd recommend buying from Swappa, the phones/sellers are vetted a lot more vs used sellers from eBay & the like.
https://swappa.com/mobile/info/oneplus-7-pro
I bought one of these and it just arrived today. The burn-in is severe. There's no ignoring it at all. These phones are essentially phones that were powered on with the screen on all day and a static image on the screen all of the time for days/weeks/months at T-Mobile retail locations.
Honestly, I'm fine with it but only because this is only for short-term and temporary use. I would HATE having this burn-in over the long haul. It should still work with most trade-in programs that accept the phone, though. Most of those trade-in programs have stipulations around cracked screens but not OLED burn-in.
Like Koliosis said, I'd avoid these unless you're fine with severe burn-in that says "6.67 inch QHD+ Fluid AMOLED Display" across the top half of your screen in giant letters. It's super obvious on white, grey, blue, and green backgrounds, much more subtle on red backgrounds, non-existent on black backgrounds.
Yeh, I wouldn't risk buying that one...
I bought two from a different seller, priced at $250 each, advertised the same way. They were store display phones which the burn in on both phones was minimal, and in great shape only have a scratch or two on the screen (unnoticeable when screen is on). Havent had any issues with either phone, but its hit or miss when buying "refurbished" phones. If you happen to get one with a severe burn in, you can exchange it for a different one or simply return it. Ebay has a great return policy, if the burn in is severe and you can see it all the time then it doesnt match the description.
I bought one for $309 with "Light burn-in". It is only really noticeable on white backgrounds. You can see it when video is playing, but it isn't that bad. Considering I got the 8GB + 256GB model for that price it is definitely worth it if you can train yourself to ignore the burn-in. Most apps have dark mode and in those cases it is barely noticeable.
Only buy from op!!
I bought one of those, shipped to Australia for $500 AUD to replace my destroyed OP6. Yes, there is significant burn in, but since I root and AMOLED black theme pretty much everything I can on my phones the burn in isn't really noticeable at all besides YouTube. The rest of the device looked perfect, not a single scratch! But no warp charger or screen protector is included, not a big deal since I have plenty lying around from previous OPs.
Considering how ****ty the economy is and that I'm on poor apprentice wages this was a quick way to get a damn good phone. These things are still retailing for $1000 here a year later, which is insane to me so I'm glad I got one for half the coin. and if I want to remove the burn in I can get the screen replaced for $250 at a later date anyway, again no big deal. I say go for it as long as you enjoy rooting and use Substratum Swift Black, force dark etc. It saves you battery life also, so win win
