So the new Fire HD 8 came out and I bought it yesterday, came today. Interestingly it runs now Android 7 (FireOS 6) which is cool. Would be nice to see root or something for this some day but maybe they patched the rest of the stuff from what I saw on the Fire 7, 5th gen. (ADB commands to disable or uninstall stuff). Didn't try it out yet.
Well, performance is okay, but the RAM is for some reason about 60 to 70% full all the time.

Been thinking about buying one like yours, but was wondering if the directions to install Google Play Store still works.
Did you install it?
I imagine all the ram being used like that is the Amazon stuff that is pre-installed.
Thanks

I'm curious about the Google play store install method too.
And it has to be all the Amazon stuff using up all the ram, I agree. That's usually the culprit when ya got a fresh install of stock firmware on there.

Does anyone know if the previous generation (Fire HD 8 7gen) Will receive fire os 6?

Hello,
I have the new Fire HD 8 since thursday and could easily install the playstore following this method.
I would have liked to change the default launcher to Apex launcher, but LauncherHijack unfortunately does not seem to work on the 8th gen (yet)...

Has anyone tried removing the special offers yet?
Also: first image shows Fire HD 8 (newest) RAM usage - second image shows Fire 7 (5th generation) RAM usage. Kinda disappointing to see that much RAM wasted on the new Fire HD 8.

I've been messing around with adb on the device, but I can't find a way to uninstall any of the Amazon apps or content. Sometimes with
Code:
pm uninstall com.amazon.firelauncher
(or other packages) I'll get
Code:
SUCCESS
but usually I'll get
Code:
Failure [DELETE_FAILED_INTERNAL_ERROR]
. Even when it shows SUCCESS, the app is reinstalled in seconds, it's not actually successful. That's as much as I've found as of yet.
I can also confirm that just installing the 4 Google APKs gets the Play Store working, no issues there.
And I can confirm that Launcher Hijack v3 does not work.

Hello,
Right, I did not mention it, but I also have tried LauncherHijack V2.1 seeing that V3 crashed, but it did not work for me unfortunately, neither with Apex, nor with Evie...
I choose the launcher in LauncherHijack V2.1, click on ok (set your launcher to Evie), I reboot and nothing has changed.
Which launcher did you manage to subtitute to the default one, please ? Did you use LauncherHijack V2.1 or another version ?
I have the karnak since yesterday evening and got play store running within minutes, very nice.
I'm also interested in getting a different launcher and getting rid of the ads, though.

credits for the leak cant be given due to nda's, jobs, etc. just be grateful
apks need to be installed to system for google now page to work as well as wallpaper picker best bet is to just flash the zip as it is. or place the apks in the correct locations with correct permissions

You just need a way to flash it or push it to /system/priv-app/NexusLauncherPrebuilt. You don't need to be rooted to actually use it.

The path should be /system/priv-app/NexusLauncherPrebuilt (don't know if that was just a typo here) but so far it has only been tested on Marshmallow and Nougat, it may just be incompatible with Lollipop. You may try flashing it if you have the ability to do so.

I checked the path, it is correct. I also tried flashing it with the same results. I know that the apk is lollipop-compatible as it does not throw a package parse error at install. Something else must be causing it to crash...
I was on the Google app beta stream, so I even tried opting out of that and installing the release version, that did not work either... so it's not an issue with the Google app.
Just installed on my LG G2 d800 and it running great! Looks amazing, sick wallpapers and pretty smooth. Awesome work!

Hey guys,
There are a lot of posts up on XDA with the Pixel's feature port for the Nexus 5X. But it gets convenient when everything's under one hood. Also not all are technically sound and well versed with flashing ZIPs, wiping the caches and so on. We need it simple! The common language that we all understand is that of apps.
I've come up with a Nexus 5X-exclusive app that puts everything together and makes it convenient for everyone to get all the features of Google Pixel with just a button click.
CREDITS:
theLazyGeek for his flashable ZIP and his efforts that helped extend this project over to the Nexus 5X - a Nexus 6P initiative primarily. Please view his original thread here.
PREREQUISITES:
1. Google Nexus 5X
2. Root Access with SuperSu installed
3. Android 7.1.1
4. Build N4F26I only (make note, otherwise your device will brick)
5. TWRP installed
NOTES:
1. This app doesn't have a roll-back-to-stock feature, though I'm working on it. In the meanwhile if you want to roll back, simply flash the stock 7.1.1. OTA ZIP which you can fetch from here.
2. There are a few features missed out in the package from Pixel XL though I'm working on porting them too. Read below to know more.
3. The in-app download as of now is about 158 MB so make sure you have enough data / internet before proceeding.
BUGS:
1. A weird one in Google Camera app that the HDR icon randomly disappears. (P.S. same camera version from stock) It requires a workaround which will be updated soon. Though, it isn't a bug with the camera. Just that the HDR icon inside the camera app doesn't show up!
2. In case your wallpaper app crashes, just follow,
i. Open any File Manager (preferably get Root Explorer from Play Store)_
ii. Grant it SuperSu access
iii. Head over to /system/app/Wallpapers-wallpaper/
iv. Just tap the Wallpapers-wallpaper.apk and install it
v. Now try setting a wallpaper to set it.
WHAT'S THERE:
1. Pixel Navigation Bar icons + animation
2. Pixel Live Data Wallpapers + Pixel Live Earth Wallpapers
3. Pixel Launcher
4. Blue Theme
5. Google Assistant
6. Pixel Round Icons
7. Fingerprint Notification Gestures
8. Cherry Picks Store that makes it convenient to select custom MODs and install them!
WHAT'S NOT THERE:
1. Night Mode
2. A full roll-back to stock.
DOWNLOADS:
Though the APK has been attached along, kindly take the efforts to download it from the Play Store (links given ahead) and also comment up there; that would be a great motivation for me.

Hey throcker, what I meant by brick is soft brick (a subset of which is ANR on boot). And it doesn't mess with the partitions. It includes SystemUI,apk patched which if flashed on incompatible firmware will cause your SystemUI to ANR at every boot! Thanks!

Yeah and editing the build.prop model to LGE is how to get it back at the expense of free unlimited photos storage
Personally I prefer HDR

Pixel Launcher ODR-4023749 Backport for Android 6.0.1+
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know I'm boring and I keep posting the same thing over and over after each Developer Preview from Android O 8.0 releases... But I needed to do this backport for my SHIELD Tablet anyways, so I really don't mind sharing it here. Find this irrelevant and repetitive, feel free to close the thread.
So... Yet another time, the title says it all.
This is a quick (I spent 3 hours on it) backport of the Pixel Launcher ODR-4023749, extracted from the Android O (8.0) Developer Preview 3. I extracted the APK from the sailfish (Google Pixel) and tested it on my SHIELD Tablet, and as it wasn't working I modded it so that it'd work just fine on any Android 6.0.1+ devices.
I have implemented the Google's signature verification patch, as according to this thread so that the application doesn't Force Close on launch, as well as all the goodies from the Pixel Launcher O-3952143 v2 backport.
I've tested the application in my SHIELD Tablet running official LineageOS 13.0 nightlies, as well as in my Wileyfox Swift 2 with Android 7.1.1, and seems to be working like a charm with latest Google Play Services installed.
However, like last time I'd like to roll call all of you to please, test it and report back with any issue you find.

- Bloggers! YouTubers! If you post links to this backport PLEASE, be sure NOT to make mirrors of it, and, it'd be awesome if you mentioned the original author in your blog posts.

Isn't working the option to long press an icon to show up shortcuts? For example Google Maps > Go Home, etc... It does depend on the launcher? I've Android 7.0 / LG G5 SE

One more thing, is it possible to change the number of icons displayed in a row? I've a 5.3'' and the other launchers give me much more space on the home screen. This one have only space for 4 icons in a row

Only Google knows
Actually, I've seen quite few new things specifically for Android O in the code (making calls to the method isAtLeastO), but nothing as big as the ones in DP2.

You need Android 7.1+ for the DeepShortcuts functionality, it's limited by the APIs.

It's possible to hardcode it but you can also try to modify your screen density (either from the Settings since you're on Android N), or using any other app to change the DPIs system-wide but that'd require root.
Thanks dev

No, since they used their own, proprietary implementation. Maybe once Google releases the source code of Android 8.0 someone tries to work on that, but for now I don't see the point in it.
(What I mean is that, if it was as easy as flicking a switch, I'd have already done that, but it's more complex, and requires some Android 7.1 APIs, so that's why)
@linuxct tnx for flashble zip
Tnx for your hard work

I am on Android beta, running 8.0.0(Nexus 6P) , but I cannot load the applicable Pixel launcher.
I get an error each time.
I was running an older version, but removed it, and still the new one will not load.
Any help would be appreciated.

This mod is intended for users running on older versions of Android, and some functionalities may not work properly in Android 8.0 because of the backport itself... in your case, you can get the official app from APKmirror.

The new update (Fire OS 6.5.4.0) isn't an major update.. I didn't really see any changes except silk browser and cpu z still shows that it's running Android 5.1.1..

Interesting. The Amazon website claims that these updates are Fire OS 6 based which is Nougat. If so, I wonder how they have managed with the larger system partition that Fire OS 6 devices have, to date, required?
---------- Post added at 04:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:43 PM ----------
Installed the update on an Amazon Fire HD 8 (2017). It is still Amazon OS5. Another Amazon version mistake. The actual OS version is 5.6.6.0.
Saw a article in Android Police and many Android sites, citing that Fire 7th Gen receives FireOS 6 which is based of Android 7.1. So is that a mistake?
My Fire HD 8 (2017 7th Gen), is updated to the newest software update, but it actually is labeled 5.6.6.0. Check out the screenshot attached, the 6.5.4 is listed in parentheses after the software version. Manually trying to update just erases the file from root, cause it's the same file. Not sure why Amazon lists it as FireOS 6.5.4.0

How will they cope with the system partitions if there is a genuine Nougat update? Fire HD 8 (2017) - OS 5 = 1.6 GB; Fire HD 8 (2018) - OS 6 = 2.9 GB.
They have just released minor updates to OS 5.6.6.0 for a number of models on Amazon.com. These updates are not available on other sites like Amazon.co.uk, so why release a minor OS 5 update to then immediately replace it with OS 6?

Fire OS updates is vulnerable, unstable, and no security updates.
Android 5.1.1 is unsupported at this year.

May be a prerequisite (prep) for subsequent OS 6 update. As for size there are a number of ways to trim the package. Also possible a portion of user storage will be sequestered for Amazon apps/content. Just have to wait and see ...

That makes more sense for the Amazon team that doesn't update Android...
Actually Amazon is upto something.. The could just rename it back (5.6.6.0 instead of 6.5.4.0) on their website instead of changing the update back to version 5.3.7.0..
I was curious how this would work. My son has the Kids Edition HD 8 (2017), and we added an SD card to it so we could copy the apps to the SD card - he was running out of space, even with the 32 GB version.
If the upcoming update (his is still on OS 5.3.7.0) changed it to Nougat (as my 2018 HD 8 is already on), the SD card issue would be... an issue. The 2018 HD 8s on OS 6 don't have the ability to copy apps to the SD card unless it's formatted as internal memory - which is not an option on the 2017 models on OS 5.
But, if the update is not an upgrade of the base Android OS, then I guess that issue is not an issue.

Installed it and its 5.6.6.0 , so maybe Amazon needs some help with numbers....

I did not install it, but the ota.prop lists the following, so I'm 100% certain its still Android 5.1.1
Code:
version_name=Fire OS 5.6.6.0 (654620620)
version_number=654620620
description=douglas-user 5.1.1 LVY48F 50.6.5.4_user_654620620 release-keys
The build.prop has
Code:
ro.build.version.incremental=50.6.5.4_user_654620620
ro.build.version.number=654620620
ro.build.mktg.fireos=Fire OS 5.6.6.0 (654620620)
ro.build.version.name=Fire OS 5.3.7.1 (654620620)
ro.build.version.fireos=5.3.7.1
ro.build.version.release=5.1.1
Amazon has pushed out several updates to FireOS 5.3.7.1 (at least 654620420, 654620520 and 654620620 that I'm aware of).
