I've noticed that on the new release on Pie - when I manually turn the phone down, it just turns down the 'media' volume and not the ring tone volume, I need to actually go in a also turn that one down.
Am I missing something? Didn't it used to default to turning both media and ringtone down? Is there a way of making both come down or at least default to ring tone?
It's a new Pie settings.. It works like this... You need to click the settings icon in volume panel to open audio settings and change whatever you want

I want to disable changing ringtone states with the volume buttons. For example, if I press it all the way down it'll go into silent mode and vibrate mode if I go one bar up.
I don't actually want that. I change the modes through the status bar. I want to use the volume buttons to just increase/decrease the ringtone volume, but not put them into silent/vibrate.
I can volume up and down into vibrate but thats the full range - pull down menu item flips between sound and vibrate only. I can however change it in the sound settings - anyone experience this before - It has to be software but for the life of me no idea what setting or possible conflict makes this happen. And randomly I will be able to do it with the rocker but most of the time vibrate is the lowest setting I can get the phone to change to without going into the settings panel.

There isn't an option like Motorola or other OEM, but if you turn off your phone in "silent mode", when you turn it on again there will be no sound.

OK , I just tried..... and it works.
I wish I had a sound symbol to press on and off like wifi, torch light etc.... may be with an update later on who knows.

When you press a button of the volume rocker appears on the screen the slider to adjust the volume, right? If you press on the ring bell next to the slider the device goes in "silent mode" without changing the volume and in place of the ring bell appears the vibration symbol. If you press on the vibration symbol, the ring bell appears again and the volume returns to your favorite setting. It is a quick setting that allows you to switch between ringtone and silent mode without changing the volume, but placed in the quick volume menu, rather than in the general quick settings.
As an alternative you have the DND (Do Not Disturb) mode that has its toggle in the quick settings.
Yes this noise annoys me too but I rarely turn my phone off unless there is a reboot due to updates.

I saw an earlier thread on this but can't believe that it's not a bug that needs fixed.
My phone has no apps open, I unlock it and press the volume buttons and up pops a little window showing me that I am adjusting the media volume. This functionality used to be context sensitive, ie, in this case it would adjust the ringer, in a call it would adjust the call volume and when playing media it would adjust the media volume.
Now it's just the media volume and a few screen actions to adjust the ringer.
Surely this is a backwards step and a bug?
Does anyone know of a way to change this, or an app that can be associated with the volume controls to make it work properly?

I don't know that there's a way to revert it to a previous Android way of handling it as it's the way Google built Pie's volume control to work.
FWIW, they did it for the millions out there who don't ever want to change the volume for their ringer/notifications once they get it set, especially if they start adjusting volume for something like a call before the context has kicked in, so you inadvertently adjust ringer volume instead of in-call volume. At least, that's what I assume it is because that's what happened with me. I have set my phone to vibrate as soon as it's out of the box, and with the new way of handling volume, I no longer have to deal with changing it off of that setting until I reset the phone. I love it.

Thanks for the reply, and the explanation Seamonkey. I have to say though I still don't get why they didn't just make this a user selectable option. Pick the default volume to adjust or leave it as context sensitive.
For some of us the phone is still a device for phone calls first and everything else second!

I'm getting desperate about the notification volume thing. I'm using volume butler but it's not reliable, especially when switching to DND mode and back. Sometimes my ringtone is very soft while the notifications are really loud.
Looking for a final fix for this, my phone is rooted. Is there some build.prop that can be enabled or a magisk mod?
Hello, you can use Button Mapper here in XDA.
You have the option to use ringtone volume instead of media volume with the + - button.
You can also make applications exceptions. I use that with play music while I use Chromecast.
That's work without root.

I used Tasker and set up tasks that sets levels for everything in four different volume conditions... Vibrate, Low, Medium and High. Within each task, I set Alarm Volume, Media Volume, Notification Volume and Ringer Volume. I also created a pop-up to tell me what profile I just set.
Then, I created individual widgets on the screen that are simply shortcuts to the tasks - one for each volume condition. Tasker comes with that widget built in. When I want to change the volume on my phone, I just tap the icon for the volume I want.
It doesn't override DND and it sets the volumes exactly as you want them every time.
