So I just wanted to make a thread for these units where people can ask/answer questions specific to these devices. May help others as the info online isn't the best, including their own forum site which I have unable to access with a few weeks due to persistent ads...... ?
To get the ball rolling;
I have updated to the new official firmware with the new widget launcher, I like the launcher, well the fact that I have large icons and can have widgets on the home screen.
My issues are,
1) when I start the car (dormancy mode) I am trying to get tasks to run automatically (open rocket player, play audio etc.) Problem is there seems to be a built in task killer that kills macrodroid (which I'm using for my tasks). I have tried autostart apps but these don't trigger as the HU is coming out of dormancy mode and not actually booting. Anyone have a work around for this? If I could get Macrodroid to run I could solve the rest using macros (tasks)
2) Since the new update with the new launcher i no longer have Voice to text, i installed the google app but this caused the launcher to crash and only left me with the recent apps screen, luckily I was able to get back into play store from here and uninstall google app again which brought all back working again.
3) When playing a podcast (Bluetooth streaming from phone) and I want to change to rocket player to play music, if I just tap play on the rocket widget the media starts playing but I get no sound until I open the app, kind of defeats the purpose of the widget being there!
4) when I first installed the unit I had no problems with the illuminate function (headlights dim screen and turn on button lights) this worked for about a month and then for no reason just stopped, now if I turn on my lights the button lights flick on for about half a second and then turn off again, its not an issue with the lights as they work fine when I chose the timed option. I haven't checked my 12v feed yet as I'm guessing its OK due to the flicker, it will happen every time I turn the lights on.
I have tried reset, reflash combos about 6 times at this stage but always with the same results.
I know there are options to change the ROM but I would like to keep it stock for now just in case I need to return it.

I assume you mean the http://forum.carjoying.com/ forum? If so, mention that. Be concrete.
That is indeed annoying, but there are many hundredths of users on that forum without issues. Maybe your ISP doing something weird.

The new official ROM?? Which one? The 5 March version? And did you pick the right one of the two? And which unit do you have?
Mention all that! This makes your remark/question useless as people trying to help first need to ask you that.

Don't you search at all? Also known issue and mentioned here on the forum.

Again: which ROM are you on? You should mention that. ROMS before 2017 contain bugs, so do they in 2017 but at least a lot less. So make sure you are on a newer ROM. If you already are, like you mentioned above, mention the version. That saves people from asking for the obvious. Before you post read the rules.
Look at this thread and this thread
First of all: Search the forum.
And secondly: Search the forum.
And third: Be concrete. Mention versions, forums, etc. You don't even mention which head unit you have.
I was looking but could only find info on the 1gb model and the thread about the release of the 2gb model.
Thanks for the info but you don't have to be a **** about it.
I missed stuff when searching, I couldn't access the joying forum, I thought saying "their own forum site" would have cleared that. I couldnt access the site to find out if there had been updates, at the time i was on the ONLY UPDATED ROM with the new launcher with customizable widgets.
When i found NoKill I thought it was for steering wheel controls which I don't have so I moved on.
When I asked about model numbers on the joying forum (when I could access it) I was made out to be an idiot too because "They are all the same thing" so forgive me for thinking that. Mine is the JY-UL135N2
Again, Thanks for the info but you don't have to be a cranky prick about it, this is a forum isn't it? Used for discussion and help?
I was only saying something like this with info in one place would be good, if its out there already then sorry, mods can delete and ill crawl back into my hole of idiotness
Yes, I was annoyed but I did give you a number of helpful links and be honest: you were not very exact in your phrasing.
And w.r.t. the roms: They are on the joying blog59 page which is also mentioned several times on several postitions in this forum, and you could also have found it from the "normal" joying website carjoying.com
Even though I was annoyed I tried to help you. If your phrasing was more concrete that would have been a lot faster. And you still don't mention which ROM you are currently using, so nobody can give you an exact answer.
You can be angry with me, but clear communication would have prevented my irritated reply.
I am on the 2017222 rom but will be updating to latest tomorrow, have downloaded just need to do the HU side of it. I can get access to the Joying site using your link and only your link, not sure why or whats going on as this includes the main joying site too.
I plan on updating, attempting root then install NoKill.
I am giving the info I have, I don't know a lot about these devices and although I have rooted phones and tablets before I have never done anything like this.
You did give me helpful links and I thank you for that but please don't be too angry with people asking questions. I realise you know how this works but others don't and are afraid of damaging the device. Before your link which I used to access the updates page I had no way of checking for updates as I couldn't get onto the page

There is no real need to update to the March 5 ROM if you already have the 22 Feb ROM.
The ROM is rooted. What you mean is that you want to install a SuperUser app like SuperSU or Kingroot or the like.
You don't need to SuperSU your ROM. You can install the NoKill version just like that as the ROM is rooted. You simply don't have the nice, userfriendly superuser apk on the system.

So there is no real advantage to the March 5 ROM?
Oh, I didn't know it was rooted still, thought they stopped that on the 2gb devices.. I'm not even sure if I need root for anything, all I wanted it for was to get to the /system... folder to copy NoKill to. Can I get there without SuperSU app using ES file explorer? Am I safe to delete the existing nokill.apk in there 1st and then copy in the new file? It won't cause any issues not having the apk for the few seconds? (Probably a stupid question)

The Sofia server is loaded upon boot and stays in memory. So no problem there.
Best thing to do via adb.
Code:
adb push Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0.apk /sdcard/
adb shell "su -c mount -o remount,rw /system"
adb shell "su -c cp /system/app/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0.apk /system/app/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0.apk.old"
adb shell "su -c cp /sdcard/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0.apk /system/app/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0"
adb shell "su -c chmod 644 /system/app/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0.apk"
adb shell "su -c ls -l /system/app/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0"
last command does nothing toyour system. It should only list the new apk and the old apk.old.
and then reboot your unit.
I know you are going to hate me for this but any time I've tried pushing files using adb I end up messing it up and bricking it.
Looks like the illumination problem was due to the car.. The illumination wire was in a different place to the joying connector, I repinned it and working now but still doesn't explain how I had it working fine for a month.. Really weird, had issues with 12v switched and constant 12v too.. Had to swap them around.. Seems to be Kia's doing and not joying.. Very strange
Macrodroid not running in background FIXED
Hey there! You probably fixed the issue with macrodroid by now but I had the same issue and I fixed it by installing Macrodroid as a system app. That did the job for me. Just did a reboot and waited for macrodroid to come up.
Thank you in advance. First of all I am still a beginner in knowledge here. My Alcatel fierce 4 TCL 5056N seems to have been hacked and is now being remotely accessed and controlled by an unauthorized 3rd party. I may be way off base but I think my phone may have been exposed to a R.A.T.. Temporarily rooted long enough for someone to modify the kernel and other system coding, which I cannot access myself with an unrooted phone, installing some sort of sub-OS with limited user setting options and a completely different named storage platform,( I.e. emulated, bdef55, self), and not even factory resetting my device helps because it reboots into the sub-OS they installed. They are screen overlaying buttons, and toggles are being reversed in real time before my eyes, settings and options are disappearing from one minute to the next and I've somehow found myself poking around in some windows software on a PC that is used to develop Android software, maybe sdk, not sure but was Linux coding and looked like it was meant for me. I was on the other end of this hack for a few minutes tho but my lack of knowledge made this useless to me. I have downloaded many an app trying to combat this issue but to no avail. Although unsuccessful I have seen a few thing I don't understand but could possibly be helpful for you to identify exactly what my issue is. One thing is an app I downloaded said that a trust cert has enabled a malicious trust agent and my system is being remotely accessed by a third party. The rest is beyond my understanding but I'm going to list a few tidbits you may recognize. LIB, Kinguser, kingroot, persist, unremovable/???/xxx, code Aurora, bootstrap something, libnfc, system/framework/Apache/xml, bin, user value=0 or 1/2, managed provisioning, also a .base ext. on a bunch of sytem apps below the same app without and a few of others. I don't know if that's helpful but it's all I can remember. Symptoms are apps closing on their own, microphone and camera being remotely enabled, unable to update Google play services or store and being forced to use an obviously older and modified version with possible replica apps with restrictions, unexpected reboots, in settings/apps/permissions apps like gallery, when you click battery and then the little i button for info, it says it's a system app and all of the sudden the disable and force close buttons become un-highlighted and unusable and so on and so forth. Lastly, my home wifi is infected I think as well because my roommate is having the same issues. I've tried(unsuccessfully) to root my phone so I could manually remove some of these apps and extra coding and such but it seems impossible because of a locked bootloader. Tried about 10 different ways without success so I've just about given up and smashed the damn thing but then you geniuses popped into my head so I beg of you, please help me or if nothing else, tell me to proceed with the smashing...lol! Thank you very much for your time. P. s. I'm new to XDA dev website so maybe drop me a line at [email protected] with directions back to this thread. Had a bit if trouble navigating here. Thanks again and have a great day! -Spencer
This launcher app appeared in my update list (Idol 6045i, 5.5). Since it is not currently on my phone it is not really an update. Notice -there is no uninstall option.
Read a bunch of reviews - most were bad, very bad - and once it's on your phone you can't get rid of it so be warned!
It is pushed out by Alcatel.

My dad's pop4 plus got it too, and it's annoying as hell.
I hope somebody comes up with a way to remove it soon , or even better, a whole ROM fo the phone.
It brought lots of adware (bloatware) I tried to get rid of it but all settings of the desktop are now gone. I have to setup my settings again.
Form of malware
Same happened to my 3 family Alcatel phones this week. I didn't ask for this forced 'update', don't want it and it has totally destroyed my desktop, contacts and all shortcuts. I phoned Alcatel and complained that they don't offer an uninstall option and what they have done is, without permission, hijacked my phone.
They said they would look into it, but I am not convinced.
Will never get Alcatel again
I didn't install it on my phone and it disappeared from my update list quite awhile ago.
I don't allow automatic updates. That is crucial. I choose what updates to install.
Joy Launcher problem
I was able to swipe down from the top, I went into settings, to Apps, to Joy Launcher. I tried Force Stop & it didn't work. I then hit the 3 vertical buttons at upper right of screen. I then hit Uninstall Updates. This allowed me to get my screen back. It also returned my homescreen to factory settings. I had to add whatever icons I wanted to the homescreen. Note, I am not tech savvy but this gave me back my functional use of my cell phone.
Same here, I will never get Alcatel ever again because of this joy launcher crap

Update: Joy Launcher returned. I repeated above actions & it again returned. On Joy Launcher I denied permissions and for a 3d time it took over my screen. I again repeated above actions and this time I was asked if I wanted to replace Joy Launcher with the factory settings. I clicked on yes and I again got my normal screen back. I don't know if Joy Launcher will return again, I'm waiting...

Are we sure this is Alcatel pushing this launcher? Or perhaps this is bundled with some other type software that persistently re-activates it.
This used to be a common practice for dev's of one program, to get extra revenue by bundling it with their own.
I myself havent installed the most recent update as I feel no need to at this time. I'm currently trying to get rid of that silly "File Manager" that just all of a sudden decided it needed to run actively!

Thank you for commenting. As I previously wrote, I'm not very tech savvy.
I don't factually know that it comes from .Alcatel but since 8/14 this keeps returning. I haven't downloaded any new apps. I cannot use the phone until I figure out how to delete the Joy Launcher message from my screen. I refuse to allow the program's permission requests. I wrote to Alcatel on 8/14 & they gave me a case #. They haven't yet addressed the complaint.
Today it returned again yet it wasn't listed as 1 of my apps. I went into apps - permissions & I denied all permissions. Joy Launcher had some permissions even though it didn't appear on my list of apps. After I denied permissions I restarted the phone & it was gone. The problem is that it keeps returning. I don't know how to stop this from being re-installed.
Sorry you are having trouble with the File Manager, I haven't yet experienced problems.

No problem mate. Been dealing with OEM crap since the HTC Desire days.
They put this stuff on for several reasons.
1) To give the device a unique feel different from other manufacturers
2) They get money from the developers of said applications to help for a larger profit margin
3) (and the 1 I think is the winner) They let their spouses or partners chose an app "cuz it's cute"
In actuality it's #1 and 2.
If you are rooted, try this app out from the play store. It's what I use.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jumobile.manager.systemapp&hl=en
You can find all the apk's and "com.xxxxx.xxxxx" files. Ya should be able to locate that joy launcher easily. My guess it's re-installing from a couple locations.
As with that Alcatel File Manager, I use ES File Explorer or Root Explorer. I don't like the idea of a program running in memory like File Explorer does. U can tell cause it leaves icons on the notification bar. So I deleted it.
No Joy, (contiunued)

Thanks for the suggestion, Mad Scientist, I'll look into the toolbox. It returned last night and I followed Moscow Desire's advice on preventing automatic updates. I had to search how to do prevent automatic updates, I didn't know I could disable them. I managed to accomplish disabling the auto updates. At some point the screen asked me "Do you want to replace with factory version" & I clicked on yes.
I hope I'm not violating protocol by going into lengthy detail. The inability to use my phone is frustrating. I'm writing about my attempts in case I succeed in regaining control of the phone & maybe my experience could be useful to somebody else. Thanks for the input & guidance.

I like your #3.
I appreciate your generous assistance. This app remover might be the answer. I'll wait and if my refusing auto updates (done last night) doesn't solve the problem then I'll download this app remover.

Not at all thats what we are here for. I'm trying to make mine better too just like you.
Hello All, I too was the victim of the rotten Joy Launcher. I think I have now stopped it and now we have a happy Alcatel cell phone.
I did a lot of things, but basically - sorry do not have the cell to hand.
I uninstalled Joy Launcher (from version 7.0 to version 5??) and clicked on Force Stop. Then I uninstalled Updates (from version 7.0 to version 5??) and clicked on Force Stop.
Within Play Store, I selected 'do not install when connected to Wireless' and 'manual install'.
There is one last 'manual install' option which I think is within settings.
The octopus is gone and Joy Launcher doesn't bug me anymore. Yippee!
Update it from Apkmirror site , you will find latest update ver 7.0.1.0.823 . It seems that play store removed it .
Response from Alcatel
As I mentioned in my earlier post I emailed Alcatel support. They did not respond so I wrote again, this was my email:
Subject:
Your malware - Joy Launcher
Message:
I have 3 pop4 Alcatel phones. You have forced an installation and update of 'Joy launcher' via Google Playstore.
It has totally removed all of my existing desktop, with its contacts, accounts and shortcuts, etc, which took months of usage and setting up. All is now wasted and lost.
I did not ask for this rubbish program. I do not want it. You have forced it on to me. You have deleted and corrupted my data without my permission.
I have made formal complaints to my network provider as I am most disappointed and angry with Alcatel and will certainly make my thoughts known, because this application is a form of malware.
=====================
I received a response today from Alcatel which was:
Dear customer,
Thank you for contacting us.
Regarding your issue, to deactivate Joy Launcher you need to connect to the internet ( wi-fi network) and a rollback that will remove the Octopus/Spider or any other such annoying features will set in.
What you will also need to do is to go to the settings and then to apps. There you will need to search for the joy launcher and then to click on it and if you see 3 vertical dots, please click on it and then unisntall updates(if not just disable it and uninstall it from the play store).
After you do this, please go to the play store and click on the 3 orizontal lines and settings-> auto-update and click on do not do auto-updates.
We also recommend to get a new launcher from the play store and set it as default in order to fix this.
Please consider rebooting your device if the change doesn't come through.
===
I though I ought to pass this 'fix' on in case it assists anyone. In any event, I will certainly not get an Alcatel phone again because of what they have done. I hate this type of intrusion with software/bloatware which constantly eats your data with spurious and dangerous ads and peaking at your data.
Good luck
Steve
The amount of bloatware (some of which is borderline malware) that has been silently installed since 6.0 is appalling. It renders the phone super sluggish.
If your phone is rooted you can uninstall most of it (at least Joy Launcher, File Manager and Weather) using a root system app remover.
Anything in the com.tct package namespace is a candidate for being eradicated.
How to root Alcatel Pop4 - 5051x
Yes, bloatware is verging on being criminal as the device has the memory stolen from it.
Thanks for informing me that rooting would allow me to get rid of unwanted stuff. The only problem is that I don't know how to do this. I have read different forums and followed numerous links but I have not found a step by step (idiots guide) to root my Alcatel pop4 (5051x) Android 6.0.1
If there is one specifically for that phone I would gratefull for assistance as I do not want to brick my device.
Thanks in advance
ps: I spent ages trying to prove I am not a robot and was about to give it up as a bad job. Is this normal or just me? For example when it asks for street signs does that include picture of the poles only holding the street signs above...? It just goes on and on. I suppose I need a guide to that now !
Hi,
I'm new to XDA. I think I'm in the right forum for my issue. My phone was infected with what I think is a type of auto rooting trojan. I was looking for info on an app I'm using called Duraspeed. I came across this website that started throwing popups at me saying my phone had tons of viruses, which was a lie. By the time I could break free from the drive by attacks, it was too late. I started getting sluggish performance on my phone and popup ads randomly. Even though it somehow gained root access, my phone is not rooted. Never was. Its still not! Because I checked with several apps off the playstore to confirm this. Long story short:
It put a file called "ads_popup-release.apk"
in my root folder /system/priv-app/
And modified a file called "8e710bb7.0"
in root folder /system/etc/security/cacerts/
or put (installed) the file there I'm not sure.
The file running on the phone as a system app is called "ad_surface"
I can only force stop and disable ad_surface without the ability to uninstall. I have to repeat this process every time I reboot. This stops the ads from popping up. Funny thing is, even though the force stop button in app settings is greyed meaning it was stopped and disabled, my OS Monitor app that shows running processes shows ad_surface is still running. Yet, it does stop the random popup ads by doing it this way. I've tried 360 AV, Avast, AVG, Malwarebytea, Kaspers, stubborn rootkit remover, a lot of antivirus programs but nothing detects it. I'm using Total Commander File Manager to view the device system partitions. I even copied the two trojan files to a folder on the user partition to see if any of the antivirus programs could check them there away from the root areas. But nothing. My guess is that I need to root my phone so I can gain access to the apk file and delete it. I haven't done a factory reset because I realize that apk file is in the recovery partition in order to reinstall itself. I've never rooted a phone before, but I have Kingroot installed. I downloaded it from XDA. I just don't have the guts to use it in fear of bricking. Do you think it would work with my phone? Does it abort the root procedure if it can't do it? Here are my phone specs:
Vortex Beat 8
Software build: 8_V1.5_20171011
Chipset: MT6580M Cortex-A7
CPU Architecture: ARMv7 Processor Rev 3(V71)
Cores: 4 1300MHz
Kernal Version: 3.18.19
Total Ram: 459MB
Internal ROM: 8GB (4GB for user)
That's about it. If there's anything anybody who could recommend how to go about this I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you...
Go try factory resetting it, doesn't hurt to try.
If the "virus" is still there you can always re-flash the phones os. Here is the link to the stock ROM ---> http://www.needrom.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/BEAT-8_V1.06_20170413.rar
The below link is a tutorial on how to flash the phones ROM.
https://www.getdroidtips.com/stock-rom-vortex-beat-8/#How_to_Download_Stock_ROM_on_VORTEX_Beat_8
In mtkdroid tools, Have all the boxes unchecked, and make sure you only have "ANDRIOD" and "RECOVERY" checked marked. The other boxes are just about the phones information and properties. Theses shouldn't be checked because it might erase your imei/drivers or other stuff. After flashing the rom make sure you do a complete factory rest + cache. Erase whatever you have on ur sd cards or micro sd cards.
Just do this and call it a day
Good luck
Cool
Hi, thank you! I will try this. I will have to borrow someone's computer like my nephews. I did try Kingroot and OneClickRoot but they both failed. Perhaps due to a locked bootloader. Or the evil trojan that made itself super user blocking them. I did do a factory reset, but the trojan persist. My mistake was forgetting to turn off unknown sources in security settings. I think that's how it got in... I'll keep checking back on this thread in the meantime to see if someone knows a tool that can kill the trojan, but I doubt it. Cheers!

It isn't unheard of for a router to get infected with a virus/malware, rare, but not exactly impossible. I've run across others here over the years that have discussed this issue. I don't remember any specifics, tools or methods to fix the issue though, but you can probably find info on removing malware from a router.

It sounds to me like their hold over you has more to do with your personal information than with your devices. With certain pieces of your info, they can gain access to any device that you sign into, login to or even just enter information in while using, even if it isn't yours.
If your network provider randomly cycles IP addresses among its users, it could be that the hacker has previously hijacked that IP address while another user was using it and his access carried over to you when the IP was assigned to you. If this is so, a new IP and changing all of your account info among all of the various accounts you have would cut him off, maybe?
I'm not the best at network security issues that go that deep. My network management/LAN Admin days were a very long time ago, too many things have changed.

translation it installed itself to the privilege app section on your phone which does not delete with a reset (new rom does) this also gives the app more power
it can only be done with root so the app rooted your phone (at least temp) here is a app that removes it but it needs root
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/de.j4velin.systemappmover/
And a system priv app has AFAIK full power however as of Oreo thier is another file to give it permisions so says google https://source.android.com/devices/tech/config/perms-whitelist namely
/etc/permissions/privapp-permissions-OEM_NAME.xml
/etc/permissions/privapp-permissions-DEVICE_NAME.xml
check these files and see what you find

The app has to be running with a linux GUID so you can check with that
the apps can not find root this can be because the program used root once to get a elevated status (temporary root) and then does not need it anymore
so you cannot find it. The question still remains how they did that but right now you need to get out.
Waiting for other response. Hehe.

On the iphone, when yyou would install a new app from the "app store" it would run a wake up over 4000 times a second to wake up an unknown app in system files . im assuming this was to clone the app or change some code in it when it was installed. Hi,
I'm new to XDA.

Definitely malmare! Mine was called "Ad-Time", like a kid's show or something, but either way, very persistent and pervasive! I have 2 roms, (v 1.5 & 1.6), in img format, easy fastboot flash. Look at this phone wrong and it's rooted. Anybody interested, hit me up, I even got the couple-line script to install SuperSU /system (beat 8 doesn't like Magisk). A simple su.d script to enable permissive selinux, build.prop changes, and you have a $30 Nexus via MTK. I also ported TWRP 3.2.1(no bugs) & Philz, but TWRP is my comfort-zone.

Typical Chinese ad/malware/surveillance. If you visit china, you turn over your devices for "inspection", so they can sideload some state-sponsored goodies. A lot of these Chinese roms have the ads baked-in, like mine. Whoever's listening and seeing my pics is gonna need therapy, because I filled the phone up with some STRANGE s*** Remove the apk, but there's several .xml's and .jar's that gotta go, too.

Root, and remove all traces of the " ad_* " app and even the duraspeed app if you want, but I didn't see anything untrustworthy about that. Duraspeed is in the default.prop (running booster), so it's in the kernel. Root uninstall just leaves you no way to control, kuz the PROCESS will go and go, unless you're willing to play with the kernel. Not for amateurs like myself My Beat 8 has been flashed or fastboot-booted more times than I can count. Good times.
Once your Chinese spyware is uninstalled, delete build.prop lines with "running booster", /system/lib's with it, and I think it was in the /system/bin, and /vendor/app had one. Clear them all, and you'll need to tweak the build.prop some more. debug.qemu.kernel=1, ro.secure_storage.support=0, ro.debuggable=1, then reboot AFTER you chmod 644 the build.prop! The "debug.qemu.kernel=1" was what made the rest stick. ADD those props, but don't change the existing ones (kernel). I just deleted the default values, replaced with "" . Fits the whole debug vibe. I should upload a copy of my final build.prop, cheap-a** phone runs like a champ.

I got the Mate 20 X from Italy, delivered two weeks after order on November 12 for € 829, VAT and 2-years warranty included. It is a nice silver device 6/128 (don’t need more memory). My first hands-on impression? I was shocked.
I had pure Chinese phones before (Huawei and Lenovo) and I know how to deal with them. That wasn’t what upset me. And it wasn’t EMUI either, I like some of its functionality and I know how to customize it.
But my previous phone was Mate 10 pro (international, not Chinese), which really works well and comparison with a newcomer is what really shocked me. The EVR_AL00 came slow and clumsy with those big fat letters and ugly ios-like icons on the screen. I tried to improve the look with increasing the smallest width in the developer options, but original resolution came back with every reset.
So what I did first, is factory reset (I usually perform it on every new phone). I lost Google Play but I didn’t care, I intended to install and adjust Google apps anyway.
And then I started to customize the phone. Basically, it means “dechinezed” and “deiosinezed” it and make it usable for my purposes as the daily driver. Eventually, I succeeded and like before I don’t regret that I bought the Chinese phone as I never regretted before. I believe that my customization demands would request almost the same amount of work and effort with the “international” version.
And with “dechinezed” I don’t mean to be impolite, actually, I like some of the features of China phones, some of them after years comes to western phones as well (night sight, close all apps etc). I just prefer the more Android look of the phone (even more than currently, Google delivers).
The actual status of my phone is as follows:
In the beginning, when I started phone manager, the performance never exceeded 69%. It seems that later it adapted and healed itself (maybe with help of AI) and now performance is usually over 90, close to 100% and the phone suddenly becomes snappy and smooth, slightly better than Mate 10 pro. As expected, the battery life is due to its capacity and with my way of use it could easily survive two days. I don’t have exact data on SOT and other parameters of the battery performance yet. By adjusting the text and display size (both too small) under settings/display the phone gets a nicer look and more usable size of applications.
I had decided to keep EMUI launcher before I learned that the phone has a hard time with other launchers. I bought Nova Prime once, I consider it a great launcher, maybe the best, but even on my previous phone I used EMUI. The reason is in its features that I don’t want to sacrifice: dedicated Accuweather, swype gestures (now with 9), dark mode. I was never a fan of ios-like white themes, I always considered that Android’s color is black. Besides, what even Google admits now (and started to return black mode into its apps accordingly), the white mode consumes a lot more energy (especially with AMOLED). What is yet to admit is that it burns your eyes.
So, what I have now, is a fully customized EVR_AL00 that perfectly suits my needs. That means that it looks like Android, works like Android and behaves like Android. I replaced most Chinese apps with Google’s ones, installed additional that I use and tune the system. With tuning the system I mean screen adjustment and customization. Under Settings/Display/text and display size, I changed both values to small and thus converted ugly appearance of the display into something that suits size and purpose of the phone. I replaced IOS icons with the Android ones. Adjusted notifications and permissions for each application.
First I was thinking about keeping some Chinese apps that I considered useful, like Sky Mobile and a few others. But trying them I found out that all of them are more or less connected either with Chinese environment or payment system and therefore eventually I removed them all. After I had to perform the factory reset I was only got more careful with apps that I disabled. And according to my orientation, I kept Email, at least until Google implements dark color in Gmail. And kept useful utilities: (Manager, Gallery, Remote…).
Otherwise, I use Google Phone (the amazing last beta from: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-google-phone-v14-0-175904292-bubble-t3708218, thank you Martin), Messages, Translate (removed nonfunctional MS Translate), Auto, Duo, Voice, Photos, Trips, Pay, Assistant, Lens, Google, Chrome, and of course all Google system apps. I also use third-party apps like VLC, Xiaomi calculator and YouTube vanced. Pretty much everything works as expected, including notifications to the extent that suits my way of use. After I erased Hivoice, Assistant works together with the hot word, if the screen is turned on (never wished to use it from turned off screen). The red mic on notification bar of the attached picture shows that assistant is active.
All banks application work. Google Play is not working at the moment but I expect that it will eventually. Currently, failure is the result of poor synchronization between Chinese EMUI and Google Android. No point to call the bank, it is the last one to solve the problem. The problem will be solved with the new EMUI or Play Services, because there is no material obstacle for G Play (SafetyNet passed and bank card is recognized and could be used online). I have another identical payment system installed (Inteso SP) and it works flawlessly.
CUSTOMIZATION
In order to adapt the phone to my needs, I had to deal with existing Chinese application first. I had to either: 1) remove them, 2) hide them, or 3) disable (erase) them.
Removing apps
Removing apps was easy. Just uninstall Chinese in Settings/Apps. As I said, I did it thoroughly and indiscriminately.
Hiding apps
My overall objective is to have only one home screen page. I’m fed up with slippery pages interfering with gestures. And besides, I decided to use gestures (swype) as system navigation and therefore swyping between homepages could be annoying even more.
In order to have only one home page, I have to use folders and hide auxiliary functional apps (like download, OTA, backup, clock..etc).
Surprisingly I found that Tweaker for Huawei works pretty well with EMUI9, although it is an old application: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teammt.gmanrainy.emuitweaker&hl=en. One of its functions is triggering the abandoned EMUI gesture that enables hiding any application and thus removing it from the home screen without affecting its functionality.
Disabling (erasing) apps
To “remove” any nonremovable application without root you need a computer with the adb command-line tool. In fact, this method never removes any application, rather disables and hides it for the current user. So it doesn’t affect OTA and it doesn’t revert after reset either. It does come back after factory reset though.
The method of erasing an app works through adb (so adb must be installed on the computer – either Windows or Linux) and it requests the following syntax in command line:
1. adb devices (and after that setting permission on the phone)
2. adb shell
3. pm unistall -k --user 0 <package name>
where <package name> is not the name of the application as it shows but the name of the installed package, which must be discovered and one of the apps which could do that effectively could be found here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.itto.packageinspector&hl=en.
(for example: pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.huawei.wallet)
A basic idea what to disable could be found here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-10/how-to/guide-to-remove-apps-root-t3828324. Of course, what to disable always depends on personal preferences and therefore this list should be taken with a grain of salt.
So, after arranging applications there comes the final stage of making the phone Android again. EMUI makeover. For that, we need this EMUI editor: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mixapplications.themeeditor.
But there is a bad news. It doesn’t work with EMUI 9 (yet). What now? There are two possibilities: either finding a good theme and simply installing it (there are plenty of them, only I didn’t test if they are working with EMUI 9 (some of the android likes are to be found in the Playstore under Hamzio7 or here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-10/themes/pure-black-theme-emui-8-t3719904.
The other possibility is to find a phone with EMUI 8 and compile the hwt file there and transfer it to Mate 20 X. That is what I did. The system will warn you that it is an old version of the theme and it might not work well but skip that. It works just fine.
Don’t judge the solution by my design. I’m a modest guy, more practically oriented. You may have almost any design that you wish.
And of course, if you decide to experiment with this stuff yourself, you should be aware that you are the only one taking the risk. I honestly believe that you can’t, if you are not extremely innovative, irretrievably destroy anything, but even factory reset might be sometimes really annoying.
Good luck with your brand new Chinese Mate 20 X.
Great post Just a couple of questions:

1) Yes, notifications work flawlessly in my extent of use, both with the screen on and off. I don't use exotics like telegram or whatsapp though. It's a matter of permissions and notification settings. Be aware that each notification had to be set separately and checked under application and under notification sector under settings. And also have in mind that if you install the third party phone, it is just addition of original phone (under app/system processes), and the later must remain active and has its own permissions and notification as well. Phone app has different system structure than SMS. You can simply erase Huawei messaging and replace it with the Google one (haven't tried others).
2) You can find here both color and memory variants: https://www.ilmultistoredelzazza.eu...l_Sim_EMUI_9_Android_9/p1748191_19236868.aspx

You should really carefully check and set both permissions and notifications for each application. And remember that you mustn't neglect the system phone app.

I checked all the settings and seem to be correct unless I missed some steps.

OK. Here are my settings.
You do know there's an EVR-L international models, right? Why not just get that instead? That's what I have.

It's too late. I already bought the China version. It's too much hassle try to sell it.

That's right, the last one is Google phone from the link I published and it works just fine (I really recommend it, it has so many opportunities). But you have managed to get notifications neither on the home screen nor on the lock screen? Neither for messages nor for the phone? If I were you I would go from setting to setting for this two apps and inspect every item very carefully. It is possible in this early stage of EMUI9 that it has some weird glitches occurring randomly on some phones but it is not very likely. A small overlooked detail in settings could mean everything.
Otherwise, I don't regret that I bought the Chinese version. Now I've got everything that I would have with the international variant. Only I don't have working Google pay yet, but so far I haven't seen a clear statement that it really works on international Mate 20x either. To work means to be able pay with the phone not only loading a card, that's what I did too. Otherwise, I got a good price (€660 before VAT), integrated call recorder and rooting opportunity.
And regarding crap, international one has it too. I've got international Mate 10 pro and I know it. Besides Chinese one additional western, baked in (MS, Facebook, Google's and third party's).
@piskr
The phone will ring on the google phone app but the screen does not come. I will play with the settings and figure it out. Thanks for all the help.
Thank you. This helped get me to a non-Chinese specifc phone.
Attachin my ADB run.
UPDATE: Please check out AJ's great thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-20-x/how-to/guide-remove-apps-adb-t3870727
I mistakenly removed one item (com.huawei.android.hwouc) I shouldn't have and I amnot getting OTAs (which I also turn off automatic ones in dev options, but if I want one, I lost it them).

As I'm not well schooled on ADB. How would you apply this? And why 2 Zips? Gracias
See beginning of the thread and other threads on ADB. Same list, mine in txt or zip, same file, not necessarily good for everyone.

Here's my Spreadsheet with a quick guide in it along with the adb files you'll need.

Once you get the list of packages on your AL00 just run the fastboot command to remove each one.

I got it working. I am using the stable v.25 version. What I did was after selected the google phone as default dialing app, I go back to default apps and click the stock phone and then click the google phone again. I did this by chance and luck. Hope this will solve your issue. The stock phone app is horrible. Make sure you use the stable version. Good luck.
