Hi Folks,
Long time samsung user here. Looking at switching my s3 to the Mediapad m5 10. Has anyone done the same thing and if so how did you find it?
I think the Tab S4 is a stupid price so won't be buying one, but the M5 looks a good upgrade.
I've flicked through a few posts and generally you all look as happy as a pig in ....!

Just did this. Not a fan of EMUI, so the first thing to do was unlock the bootloader, flash OpenKirin RR, root, disable SIM card settings (I bought the WiFi CMR-W09) and so far loving it. The wife also likes it so I'll be replacing her Tab S2 with a MediaPad 8.4 and give it the same treatment.
Thanks I picked one up from argos and loving it. The size is nicer / bigger than the s3 and I'm loving the sensitivity of the screen and keyboard.
Going to install nova launcher!
Colours aren't as bright or vivid as Samsung.
Downloading and installing seems slow but in use its wonderful.
Never had the S3 or S4, but I've had Samsung phones with (SuperAM)OLED displays and several Oneplus with OLED too. Being spoiled with those displays the Huawei isn't really very good. Oversaturated, greenish/blueish with bright colors that pierce my eyeballs out. I have 2 Huawei's actually, and both screens are totally different in terms of screen calibration. One one, I had to take 10% green out and 5% blue to make it look closer to the other one (now grey looks off compared to the other one but colors and warmth are somewhat similar).
Other than that the tab is nice, fast and simply works good. I don't like the position of the volume keys (at the bottom in portrait mode). In landscape, the position is better.
I've unlocked and rooted it, which allows you to melt the bloat and install your own launcher and favorite apps. I've got Resurrection Remix on both of them now though, but yesterday I got the keyboard cover and that doesn't seem to work right with RR, so Im reverting to stock to see if the keyboard actually works better.
Games work good, Fortnite doesn't work but Steam streaming from a PC works very well! I don't have a controller so I can't comment on that.
I switched from S3 to M5 Pro.
Some features are missing, like writing when screen off or the s-pen menu (which I am still searching a replacement for)
The Price tag is what drove me to Huawei, the Customer Service is what will one day take me away from it, I suppose ...
I am mainly using it in landscape mode, so I really like the positioning of the buttons etc. The speakers are great, however, the display is not as bright as Samsung's ...
but M5 Pro > S3 Tab
I'd say overall, compared to S4 (which is slightly better in some domains), the M5 Pro and the S4 are equal!
yes just to provide an update I agree the screen on the M5 just isn't there alongside the very bright and colourful Samsung devices. First use it looked very dull indeed but I've adjusted.
Happy with performance and battery life is good.
I'm not sure wifi is as fast.
Kirin 960 is on par of sd 835, so you get a better device in every aspect but the display, miles better on s3 or s4, 8,4" has 680:1 contrast ratio, very poor, but like one said before, you get used to it, is not a bad screen, btw 10,8" has a 1500:1 medium to high end lcd screen
I haven't used or even seen the S3, but nobody makes displays sexier than Samsung does.
That said, I really like the display on the M5 - it is not only decent quality but it is easy on the eyes (especially with eye comfort turned on).
I've made the jump from the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition to the M5 10.8 Wi-Fi.
Got it over Thanksgiving for $329. Thought that was a great price.
So far really enjoying it.

Why root? Wouldn't Nova launcher have done the trick?
every now and than, EMUI causes Nova to crash, which really is annoying. Trust me

Same. I have both an M5 and M5 Pro. Both screens lean heavily toward a green color gamut. Using the stock white balance tool helps, but not enough. Using a third party app, I can get the screen to look decent on it's own. But next to any properly calibrated screen they look pretty awful.

Ok, I have Nova Premium on my P20 Pro and so far (in a couple of months) it has not crashed once. The only thing I have noticed
is the P20 Pro disconnecting from WiFi for no obvious reason and requiring a reboot to reconnect. But I did not attribute that
to Nova. On the other hand earlier rooted devices with custom roms usually turned into crash fests. So I'd still go for Nova as a
fix.
By the way, Nova is running very stable on my M5 as well and looks like a million bucks.
it looks great, as I set mine up the way I want it ...
on stock I had several crashes of nova in a week, not once since I rooted my M5 Pro. :-o
i guess i am the only one not hating emui, i'm not gonna say i love it, but for me is fine enough, in emui 9 it gets even better (i've got mate 20 pro)
I just got an M5 with 4G (not sure I will use this, but was a crazy low price) - 380 Euros.
It replaces my Sony Xperia Z4 ... which I only replaced as the screen was broken, and cost nearly 300 Euros to replace the screen.
I agree that the display is poor compared to the Sony (which was bright and gorgeous) - but in every other aspect the M4 is better.
Will try and find a third party app to adjust the colour ... any recommendations?
I am running Nova on mine too - but the slightly annoying thing is that the search bar in landscape mode isn't horizontally along the top, but vertically on the left hand side .... according to the developer this is to do with the screen DPI and resolution, and is not controlled by the app.
The m5 display is good. The colors just don't pop but to me that's sort of like the blind smartphone camera test where the majority of people chose the camera that had brighter pictures but that didn't mean better quality.
Against the s8 - yeah there is a difference and the s8 destroys it but its kind of diminishing returns. The display is still solid on the m5. Sure, there is some color shift and the colors regardless of calibration lean towards cold. Side-by-side i'm not crushed that the m5 doesnt look like the s8. I guess depending on what you want out of it this may be a deal breaker but for most people i would suspect it not to be.
I have lot of doubts between M5 10.8 and Samsung tab A 2018
Does the multiuser work correctly? with fingerprint?
Does Hearthstone run ok?

Despite some ups and downs along the way, I've been quite happy with the Note Edge. I actually use a Note 4 port on it so I do not have the Edge side features. I prefer having the entire width of the screen to work with (although I do miss tiny burgers!). As it turns out, the width of Note Edge screen is about the same as the Mate 8, but it is about 1 cm shorter then the typical 6" screen. I've gotten so used to the wider screen I don't want to go down to a narrower phone. So I'm interested in some of the new crop of 6" phones. Seems like the Mate 8 is one of the better models. Anybody thinking of going that route? Any comments about the device or Huawei support or development for these devices? Thanks

Wow! Talk about big screen. That beast has a 6.8" screen. According to GSMarena, its next iteration, the p9max, will be shrunk down to 6.2". Might have a better screen and camera than Mate 8. May be worth the wait.
My wife has the P8 and really likes it.
You wont ever be able to use xposed, so that might be a consideration.
Otherwise, the phone is really nice and the camera seems great.
They is very little development for them though.
I think there is only 1 ROM for the P8, and none for others - like the P8lite.
So, if you love modding your phone with custom ROMs and xposed, I would shy away from Huawei.
Speaking of tiny burgers, what happened to it. I can't find it anywhere. I got my phone 5 months ago and it was on 5.0.1 but even then, I don't remember the game being there
Looks like it will be offered in US

Giving it some serious thought...
Can those who have come from a note 8,please share your thoughts and views, on what you miss, performance wise etc, now that you are using the pixel 2 thanks.
Miss the ability to use themes and select a different font. And nothing can beat the Samsung OLED panels! I don't miss the S-Pen that much though!
In short, the Note 8 is crammed with features and sometimes can come in the way of your working. I find the Pixels smoother to work with and just allow me to get what I need done. I probably wasn't the right demographic for the Note 8 anyway!

I have to agree here. I have a Note 8 review unit currently, and I haven't been able to put my Pixel 2 down since getting it. The camera is much better, and aside from a few nuances, I'm overall very happy with my choice.
I'm almost ready to upgrade and currently using an S7 edge. I torn between the Note 8 and either of the Pixel's did dropping in screen size take time to adjust?

I was honestly torn between the S8, Note 8, and Pixel 2. I think they're all great devices with pros and cons, and a great deal just depends upon personal taste. I'd highly recommend walking into a Best Buy or other store with these models on display, and take some time to play around with them.
One thing I will admit regarding the Note 8 is how surprised I was with its size. The Note 8 certainly has a large display, but I didn't find the device to be as unwieldy as I had expected. I also found the fingerprint reader to be far easier to use than I had assumed (I'm right-handed, and hold the devices with my left hand).
My only concern is how the Note 8 would feel in a pocket all day. I already have a great tablet that I use all the time (Kindle Fire HDX), so my phone is simply my "Go everywhere with me at all times device". I'd certainly be interested to hear from others how it feels with constant carry in pants or coat pockets, but IMHO I imagine the Pixel 2 being far easier to have on oneself 24/7 as opposed to a Note 8.
Substratum themes work on Pixel 2

For me personally the note 8,has been the fastest phone I have ever used. I know others don't have much care about the headphone jack, but for me it's just convinient to have. I listen to a lot of music, play games and watch movies on my phone so not having the headphone jack is a deal breaker for me.
I have been torn as well.
I wanted Pixel XL but it's screen issues put me off. Pixel 2 small big bezels, wasn't sure coming from 6p.
Ordered S8...
Stunned with the display but that's about it... Camera - front crap so much worse than 6p, rear - could capture nice pic but 6p was much more reliable in this matter.
Overall smoothness wasn't somehow great, still full of Samsung crap,. Fingerprint scanner is a joke, location, accuracy and speed.
After one day of owning it I have sent it back
...
And bought Pixel 2!
What an amazing experience. Super smooth, amazing camera, great display but tad small although appreciate one handed use so much!
Speakers could have some more bass.
You can't go wrong with Pixel. Great phone;

Hmm if the pixel is much smoother then it's definitely out of this world. I have found my note 8,to be very smooth as for the first time ever I have not bothered installing a custom kernel or any kernel tweaking app. I am using it stock , just rooted but it's been great. Maybe one more point is the fact that mine is the Exynos version so it might help explain why it's been performing great. I am however always on the lookout for a fast phone so might just try the pixels.
I'm very tempted to grab a Pixel 2 (and sell my s8) with the VZW black friday sale, but I don't know if it is worth it. Before the s8, I had the 6p, and I really miss the pure android experience. Also, the stupid fingerprint reader placement drives me nuts. Was wondering if there was anyone else that has switched over to the pixel from the s8 and what their experiences were? Did you notice the difference in battery life? Camera quality? Day-to-day use?
I like the pixel 2 a lot better than my s8(sold) and the only thing I miss is Sam pay. You won't be sorry for getting the pixel. It's very solid plus 2 year warranty and first dibs on software.
Camera is better and battery is the same if not better on the pixel 2

Were you lucky in getting a phone that works? Did you have to go through any RMA processes for the screen/call issues? I'm a bit worried of the return process - really the only thing holding me back at this point.

I haven't used an S8...but I know what is to have a non-Google android phone.
Honestly from my point of view, the S8 is better in terms of screen size and overall phone width. (This is something I'd liked to have in the Pixel 2). S8 is still a bit tall for my liking.
So you might miss this screen size switching to the Pixel 2.
Now if you had a Google phone before and you miss all that. Then everything else it would be an upgrade and tie to you.
I've personally switched from a 6P and can't be more happy with the Pixel 2. But I always liked phones with less than 70mm of width that are easy to handle with just one hand while walking etc.
Sent from my Pixel 2
I had the S8, couldn't stand the bloat and general lack of responsiveness (my other phone is an iPhone 7).
I sold the S8 and was looking at the OP 5T to replace it but went with the Pixel 2. All I can say is, this phone is the best phone I have used in 2017. The camera is great, the screen is great, I have no issues and everything works.
The screen to body ratio is terrible and it's pretty big for a 5 inch phone, but I can live with all of those.
Every time I pick it up, it's a joy to use and is so fast and responsive.
If something happened to my phone, I would buy another Pixel 2 in a heartbeat. That's how much I love it!
Like above the only thing I miss about the s8 is Samsung Pay. Bluetooth on the samsung seems to work a little better IMO. My car and BT headphones seem fine but other bluetooth gadgets seem a little flakey (golf gizmos etc). I had the P2XL and sent it back. I've enjoyed the size and screen on the P2 more
Don't be fooled by the defects you see in xda. I sure that they are shining brighter because usually ppl don't complain when it's issue free... Every thing is on par with the pixel 2 when it comes to build quality if I compare it to my old s8 and my Moto z2 force that i have.

Great points! I definitely love the s8 screen and it's going to be weird to adjust back to the deep bezels (I think the transition would have been better if I went from the 6p directly to the p2), but like you said, I miss the pure android experience.

Yeah I haven't heard too many p2 complaints vs the 2xl which is a big reason why I decided on the p2. But I was also on the fence because I thought I would notice the difference in screen quality/resolution between the s8 and p2 (1080 vs 1440).

Samsung is more saturated which I don't mind. I'm not a screen junkie. I miss a little bit of screen real estate. I liked the P2XL screen except for the blue. that was awful. I still have my S8+. It will come down to bluetooth in the next week if I return the P2
I got an Xperia 1 for £500 and a OP7 Pro 12Gb model for £550, I should receive both tomorrow and sell one of them later, just really unsure which one to sell, I know tomorrow I'll have a better perception, but at the moment, I can't make up my mind, why I should keep one over the other, they both have stock Android, Sony's has very fast security updates, almost on point with the Pixel phones, and that 4K screen should be amazing, now the OP7 Pro, has an amazing dev community, no features lost if bootloader is unlocked, like on Sony phones, all screen design (unsure how I feel about this though, not having where to hold can be annoying, had that issue with the Vivo Nex 2), 90Hz display (but my eye can't see the difference, had the Razor Phone 2, which has a 120Hz display and not that big of a difference in my eyes) and bigger battery (again, reviews say that at 90Hz it drains pretty fast). Did not mention cameras or fingerprint sensors, because both seem to be on par, in-display fingerprint are a bit meh, curious to see how good the OP7 Pro is though, because the ones I've tried, still make me miss the old school fingerprint readers on the back and the Sony side mounted fingerprint is also meh.
Considering the prices I got them for, which one would you guys keep and reasons, would really appreciate your opinions on this.

Regarding 4k - I came to my OP7Pro from my XZ Premium. Sony isn't bad, but it's not as good as OnePlus. I haven't used 4K even once. It was completely useless. Heck, I intentionally forced my OnePlus to stay on FHD. My battery life is beyond 6h SOT. All day battery. It's amazing. Warp charge works, it's real. It's amazing. I don't know what you're talking about with 90hz. I can see the difference. The moment I looked at a high refresh rate screen I saw the fluidity. I'd keep the OP7P, but both options are definitely great. You can't go wrong with either option.
The moment I saw a 90hz screen I decided that I will never again purchase a device with less than 90 Hz (even better with 120hz). So it would be a no brainer for me.

I have had both for over a month, sell the Xperia 1, trust me
I had an Xperia 1 for 5 days before I returned it and got this, I can assure you this is a decision that you will not regret. I have been an Xperia fan boy for the last 6 years since the first Xperia z came out in 2012. Sony have also ruin to find by putting DRM keys on the devices and you will lose major functionality if you unlock the bootloader... With the oneplus all is good with unlocking the bootloader and you can be anything you wish on the phone. although it hurts my heart from the inside Xperia one has got nothing on the oneplus 7 pro the device did not just feel right and was hard to use for me. it appealed to me in the slightest and everything that oneplus 7 pro has overwhelms the Sony Xperia 1.
I don't find it aesthetically pleasing too,Not Sure about this one but they always lacked in Camera Department too
Guys Do Find 60 hz to be more choppy than other 60 hz display or ist it just me? The screen on my iPhone Xs Max seems more fluid & responsive than Op7 Pro when 60 hz is selected
Quick update, I received the OP7 Pro 4 hours ago, the Sony seems to be delayed with DHL, so probably just tomorrow now. OP7 Pro so far seems very nice, the case that comes with it unfortunately peels off the screen protector when it's on, I guess the screen protector that comes pre installed it is not centred, so, on the top right corner, the case is peeling the screen protector, I'm using it without a case now, it's the same size as my Note 9, so not a big issue, the Note 9 does have a better grip though, the OP7 curves more then the Note 9 and that makes it less grippy, if that makes sense. Also tested the app drawer on the Note 9 vs OP7 Pro and I can see the 90Hz now side by side, but I think I can still go back to a 60Hz display, it's not that of a big deal IMO.
I'll do some more testing tonight, maybe some night shots if I have time, between the Note 9 and the OP7 Pro let me know if you want to info in a Note 9 vs OP7 Pro.

So setting up the OP7 to 60Hz and comparing to the Note 9, both look the same, iPhones do have higher sensitivity, so it appears smother, but 60Hz on Android seems to be the same on the OP7 Pro and Note 9.

Took a photo of my living room with artificial lighting, the colours are more natural on the Sony and quality is about the same on both, keep in mind this is with the stock camera, didn't have time to install GCam, but it's running the latest OOS.

What do you guys think?
I wonder if anyone can help me, should Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite buy it. In Vietnam market, its selling price is very good.

why not get s10e? or wait for s20
I would have definitely went the Note 10 Lite if my current phone (Note 8) wasn't working so damn well for my needs. I think the 10 Lite offers the best combination of features for the price than any other phone today, especially to those who want a stylus. The 3.5mm headphone jack and a non-curved screen actually make it more attractive (to me) than the more expensive Note 10 models.
I'm wondering about this as well. I'm in the US on T-mobile and wondering how this will work. Someone did me a favor by dropping my Note FE and now I'm in the market for a replacement (screen was toasted due to the drop). Wondering how the 10 Lite will work as a daily driver here in the US.
Anyone have any thoughts based on their experiences? Especially @butchieboy - would you recommend it as a daily driver (and only phone)?
Thanks in advance.
Hello, well i am using this phone now for about 2 month's. I am very happy with the phone for my purpose of use. For the price you will get a lot off phone is my opinion. The screen is fantastic, large, great colors, good visible in light. It runs very smooth, no lags at all and in my country the updates comes fast. All the good UI features are present and working very well. I am not a gamer so i could not inform you about gaming performance, only simcity buildit i use and that is running without any lag. The camera is pretty well, very nice wide angle and good HDR quality. Night photography is possible in pro-mode and for what i have seen reasonably. And then the S-pen, that is the reason i bought this one and not the s10 lite. I love the S-Pen and the features. Easy to use and very handy.
The battery gives me more then one day of usage, about 35 hrs. And with the charger it is fully loaded in a hour. The sound with headset and bluetooth speakers is good. Connection also, haven't had problems. The fingerprint reader is not the best there is, in bright light it does not work all the time but face unlock is very fast and accurate.
Overall opinion with marks 1-5:
Display, 5
Multitasking, 4
Performance daily use, 4/5
Battery, 5 (more then one day on fair use)
Software, 4
Updates, 4/5
Design, 5 (personal)
Fingerprint, 3
Cheers!

Thanks for your frank and detailed review.
I have this phone and i can't agree more with you.
I think its an excellent phone, especially if you need a stylus.
I live in United States and use it on At&t and love it. Can't beat the price. Plus bootloader can be unlocked and very easy to root if you care about that.

I've decided the Note 10 Lite is the phone for me, after researching for a while. Don't play games, don't even need a decent camera, and it's the only decent(ish) phone in the UK currently that can be had for under £35 a month, everything else goes up way to much. Plus it should be a nice upgrade from my P20 Pro, even if it's not got flagship specs.
Currently waiting a week as I'm almost into the free upgrade period, and I'm not spending £50 to release early when I could just wait a week!

Gaming ain't bad bro. Just not high refresh rate and all that.
I am going to buy this phone should I go for it in 2020? I will be using this phone for at least 2 years but I have doubt on this phone's processor please reply
I'm also very happy with 10 lite...love it much more day by day
I've had mine a week now and it's brilliant really (for my use!)
It's now in a spigen case, so the plastic back really doesn't bother me. The whole UI is miles faster than my old P20 Pro, even with the supposed chip differences, that's not bothered me at all! Battery life is good, the screen is bright and sharp and I'm very glad I went for it!
I love the S-Pen. Don't use it all that much tbh, but for screen snips, selecting text and playing with the AR camera, it's fab! Certainly glad I have it than not. Had the first cause to use the screen-off note function the other day and it was brilliant.
There are a few drawbacks however:
The in-screen fingerprint sensor is trash. Like really bad, when I go to my P20 Pro it's instant compared to the Notw10Lite, and that's when the note actually recognises my fingerprint. It got worse when I fitted a screen protector, just refused to work at all so instead I just set a pattern and use face unlock, which works well.
The camera is wierd. It defaults to a mid-zoom which takes the clearer images. If I back it down to no zoom the images become slightly blurred, so I need to get used to that
Samsung software, this was always something I knew would be tricky, because I don't like it. Nova launcher prime went on within half an hour of unboxing it and now it's about as good as it will get. Open app notifications can't be swiped away without closing the app fully, some refuse to go at all and the samsung software spent a week throwing notifications at me to use it's stuff (I don't have a samsung account, don't want to use Bixby etc...)
It is nice though, and a very good compromise for a big screen with stylus phone without spending full fat note prices. Hopefully in time some lovely rom's will come out for it, although I use google pay 100% of the time so that could be a potential issue.
If you are interested in getting a Note 10 Lite. Why not just get the Note 9? As it is flagship device and has more features that the Note 10 Lite.

A good question is where to buy new note 9 in 2020...
I love the note10 lite, but it's too hot (not like sexy girl!). The Exynos 9810 heats up even under light load. And in games, like Pascals Wager, becomes an oven. Also note10 lite does not hold the cellular signal very well.
Otherwise it's a great middle-range smartphone, with a good camera and performance

You can easily find a brand new unit on eBay or any other reputable online retailer. You might be able to find one in a 3rd party high street retailer. I have the N960N (which is powered by the Exynos 9810) and it doesn't heat up that much, unless I have my Note 9 under heavy load
Okay so here is the deal. I currently own a Moto Maxx (xt1225), which is old and dying. I can't find a good offer on the older note models like 9 or 8. BUT i can grab a Note 10 lite for around 360 bucks. Is it worth it? For all i know this is pretty much a S9 with an S-Pen. My problem is that the XDA scene does not look promising and my experience with moto maxx was pretty bad cause it was nearly dead too. I had an galaxy S2 and it was awesome lot of development! But i don't wanna get stuck with another dead phone for 6 years again, any thoughts?
