The best battery Rom + Kernel Browsing for Internet Surfing and e-book reading - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

This post is intended for guys like me which use their phone mainly for internet surfing (40%) + reading (40%) + light gaming (10%) + IM (10%). And for those who wanted to tweak their phone so that their phone and battery will last longer, I intended to use this phone for more than 3 years so I'm gonna take good care of this phone. With this setup you can easily get over 10 hours of SOT with 24 hours of usage.
After purchasing Redmi Note 5, I have been trying to get the best battery life out of this phone. In my opinion, to have a better battery life, your phone's battery would have to run a lower temperature, if the temerature is too high then your phone's battery will deteriorate more quickly. So first thing is to keep your phone away from overheating. Second will be to keep your CPU scale back to the lowest frequency after they finished their job thereby lowering the temperature of your phone (race to the idle). Third will be to try to extend the life span of your battery by not overcharging it.
-The combination of Rom would be AOSIP + Derp. The combination is already very battery friendly coupled with decent performance. If you want something more then download KA in the playstore and give it root access.
1) Go to misc, lower the vibration strength
2) IO tab, disable IO stats.
Then reboot your phone and see if KA can apply their settings after a reboot.
-If you want to further improve your battery life and lengthen your lifespan of your battery, then you can install these 3 magisk modules.
Enable Doze for GMS
Magic Charging Switch (set it to charge when lower than 70% and stop charging at 80%)
Sysconfig Patcher
-IF u are like me, who do not use a lot of google service, you can further tweak your phone to make it more battery friendly:
1) Go to setting -> google -> Ads -> opt out of Ads Personalization
2) Go to setting -> google -> Nearby -> Gear logo -> Links, Popular links set to off
3) Go to setting -> google -> Location -> disable location sharing
-Disable All sync (this may result in delay in receipt of notification, so choose wisely)
- Go to developer options -> lower the scale of animation
- Go to developer options -> logger buffer sizes set to off
The thread is edited because after trying kirks and noname kernel, I found myself always going back to derp, mainly because it is rock stable, while the other kernels seem to have some weird issue after someday of usage......

thanks!

Big downside of AOSiP is GCam: hard to get it works properly

Nope, using AOSiP since I bought the phone, that would be some 3 months, never had issue with GCam. I have flashed camera2api zip file (TWRP not Magisk module) and I never had FC's with any GCam I've used (except few which are bugged, but that's an app issue not the rom).

I didn't quite understand your post, the construction of the sentence confused me, sorry. Anyway, front HDR+ and portrait issues are not directly tied to AOSiP, it's present with every custom ROM since it's a lib issue more specifically and pretty much all custom ROMs use the same libs. Either the GCam can't be linked to proper libs or those libs are not compatible with GCam (the default parameters in them). Similar issues were present in other devices and they were fixed by modifiying those lib files.
The guys on Telegram who are working on the fix are going in the right direction though since the repeatable pattern can be achieved now.
Anyway I was just trying to explain that all custom roms are affected regarding front HDR on GCam, AOSiP isn't better nor worse in that regard

I did not said about technical detail on a Rom/libs or something like that. I said only about available solution to use as daily driver. If using AOSiP Oreo, you can not get max out pic quality from the phone. Miui 10 and Pie have no problem with GCam patch

What do you mean that you can't get max pic quality? If you are talking about image processing and quality in terms of detail preservation and noise reduction, the pictures are completely the same in all 3 setups (Oreo-any, Pie and MIUI). I have tested Oreo and Pie while my friend is still on MIUI so we could try side by side. The GCam patch works here on my AOSiP Oreo, even in low light, and if it stops (rarely) I just shoot a picture with my back camera and switch to front. On the other hand, I have seen a lot of people on Telegram channel reporting that they can't make it work on MIUI (less so on Pie) but when they do it is still not working 100% (as in my case) since the patch isn't final.

I am using this one, yes it's a bit dated, but the picture quality seems pretty good overall. The biggest reason is that this version does not produce pinkish tint in shadows as almost all Arnova's do (not sure about the latest 8.3b, didn't test that). I have probably tested around a lot of different apps from different devs, this seems like most suitable. Settings are attached. You can go higher with HDR+ parameters, but it will sacrifice processing speed and you won't get much more details (if any at all), so this is good balance between speed and quality even in low light. JPEG quality does not need to be at 100% since the picture size is going to increase significantly while the picture quality will not be noticeable.

Please read carefully what I wrote. I have said that it works, but IF it stops working (for whatever reason), there is a workaround. Note that I am using older version of patch which is I believe 0.940 or 0.939, didn't try the latest, nor do I need it right now since I don't want to make a mess until final fix comes out as this is reliable on my setup. The point was to rule out the AOSiP as root of front HDR issues, as you said in your original post. It isn't.
Also I don't know how would you know if I took these pictures right away or I had to shoot one with rear camera first, but I guess you don't believe that the patch is working at all here. But here you are anyway. Artificial lightning, base ISO is at 1500, so good enough proof. I have shot couple more with front flash in completely dark room, but that's not usual case where anyone would use front cam, but it still works anyway.

I know, it works even in low light like that, it might be working on mine since after flashing the module I booted TWRP immediately, mounted vendor and system and booted to system, where as other people might not have. I don't know the method and steps you used to flash the module, but I'm pretty sure it works on mine.

Just discovered a little gem on the xda, that is the InsigniuX Kernel. This kernel coupled with AOSIP oreo, u will have great balance between performance and battery life. Just set the input boost to 0ms and disable input boost core 1 so that the boost will not be active, then set the cpu governor to schedutil and IO scheduler to CFQ, disable IO stats, and enjoy your device.

MI 5s camera mods [Updated: 1st Feb 2018]

Hi all..
This is a fix for the broken implementation of camera 2 API on our device.
This will allow us to finally shoot up to 32 sec raw image in camera 2 API and also enables up to 100k ISO...
Much love and respect to @defcomg for fixing this for us, he is an amazing dev and if you would like to donate to him you can hit this link!
NOTE:
This mod will probably only work on Lineage and 7.1.1+ ROMs. I've tested it on latest RR (16 June) and it works.
Don't flash on MIUI ROMs, I haven't and probably won't test it, but feel free if you are brave
Make a backup (TWRP). Or if anything goes wrong just reflash ROM, it'll fix your problem.
I take no responsibility for brick or boot-loop...
LINK:
V1 - Initial [LOS/RR etc..]
V1 - Test (I need someone to tell me if this works) [Miui N ROMs]
V2 - Nightmode profiles [11 December]
V3 - Oreo Libs [1st Feb]
For future versions I would like to try to add longer exposure times as well as fix pixel binning for better low light shots!
Edit:
16 June: There is a delay when shooting long exposure, for example when selecting 32 sec, the shutter button will be pressed for like 32sec x 2 = +-64 secs, don't know why but anyways it only shoots for first 32 seconds, so just be aware of that..
19 June: Fixed Miui N test lib link
11 Aug: Nightmode coming soon, this will allow longer shutter speeds, essentially up to about 5 mins
Also all apps should be able to take advantage of this.
11 Dec:
Added libmm shutter extension and pixel binning.. The respective number (3, 9, max [14]) multiplies the shutter by that amount, meaning if you have an app that normally can only capture up to 1/17 shutter, and use 3x lib it will now use 3/17 shutter (almost 0.2 sec), this affects all video and photo apps, you can restore it by replacing original file..
Oreo has a busted HAL so shutter on manual only hits about 4 sec without breaking, using max libmm mod you can get about 1 min shutter I think, in nougat using fixed cam 2 libs, you can get about 7 min shutter time.
Pixel binning is somewhat working, it has a dark preview, and I don't know why, but when you shoot in raw, you will see the file is much brighter with less noise, but at lower res.
Place the file in /system/vendor/lib then reboot the device
NOTE: The HAL fix from above (V1) will not work on Oreo since it's using a new HAL, so don't use that, if you don't know or are unsure..
1st Feb 2018: Patched Oreo libs to allow long exposure. Added libmm multiplication hacks.
Gonna be away till like mid Jan, so might not be able to answer questions..
Good work ?
Can the default snap camera take advantage of this api2 or another camera app has to be used?

FreeDcam app specially for Mi 5s
Is it possible to enable iso lower than 100? Or maybe it's pointless because it's achieved by software, and the quality will be worse than 100? So can we conclude that lineage (or some other) roms are better than MIUI? I'm thinking moving to these roms.
By the way, it seems that the link on the first post was incorrect (miui one), the later ones are working though.
---------- Post added at 08:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:54 PM ----------
I'm on miui 7.6.15 xiaomi.eu , got upto 8714 iso with snap camera. Stock remains 3200. Still 16 bit raw Still 1/3 s shutter with 3rd party camera apps, though I heard someone already has shutter longer than 1s with 3rd apps. I don't remember have flashed any other patches especially related to cameras
With los, Lightroom could have shutter 1s, but iso up to 100k, I don't know if it really works, as it's white paper after 10k anyway.

Nokia 7 plus GCam mod for Android P (9.0) Dev Preview

Greetings fellow 7 plus users!
I've seen some requests here and (mostly) on Nokia community forum for a working GCam port on Nokia 7 plus Android 9.0 Developer Preview, which is a pretty fair phenomenon, since the stock Nokia camera is still a bit unpolished (ridiculously high exposure and lack of shadows for me). While there weren't 100% working ports, today I found a nearly perfect version on a GCam port repository website (URL: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/). I tried many apks, but this was the single one in which I couldn't find any major bugs. Also worth mentioning that portrait mode and HDR+ works fine as well. There is also well-functioning portrait and slow-motion mode. The only minor bug is a small "5 second burst" pop-up text always visible in normal camera mode, but that is an acceptable compromise in exchange for the working functions. Also, sometimes the photos are a bit brighter than they should be. I guess it requires some tinkering in the settings, but I didn't have too much time to actually find out what causes it. As soon as I find the fix for it, I'm going to update the post.
C R E D I T :
The port was made by @fu24 based on @Arnova8G2 's port. Colossal thumbs up for them.
P H O T O S :
Also, I attached 3 sample photos. The first one is a normal image in Auto-mode taken with the stock Nokia camera app, the second is also a normal photo in Auto-mode taken with the GCam mod app, while the third is a portrait-mode shot. As I said, the brightness is a bit too much, but the details are fantastic. Hint: it's worth taking a look at the sky and the reflections on the car when comparing the two images.

I think maybe someone wants to try to use the second back camera. You can switch lens with the "Toggle back camera ID".
But I can't guarantee that it is suitable for Nokia 7 Plus. I must explain that I am just a beginner with limited ability. I really don't have the ability to fix other problems.
To use the second back camera, if the phone does not even report all cameras through the Camera2 API ( Includes second back camera ) (use Camera2Test app to verify your device info). You need to install the zoomfix module.
I tried that option, but it resulted in force close. :/ The highlight/shadow saturation options might refine the photos though, I'm going to try them later today.
Edit: Tried it. Increasing both value made just the perfect photo.
Also, unfortunately I can't install zoomfix due to the lack of bootloader unlock possibility.
I posted in another thread what I probably should've posted here, but I didn't see this thread until later.
I think the 7 Plus has the same camera sensor as the X4 (based on research and sensor data).
Here's the variants that work best for our sensor. I'm thinking you may have luck with the following versions of the Google camera:
This version is excellent in low-light and general photography. This is the best version as far as noise and color accuracy go, it's superb. It's also very easy to set up. Simply set your desired HDR+ quality, and that's it.
And this second version I use as a backup, because sometimes the other camera port will drop shutter speeds indoors for better lowlight performance.
If I'm right about our sensors being identical, you should have good results. The lens on the 7 Plus is even better than the X4, so I'm excited to see what images can be captured. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be completely Android P compatible (of course, since it's just a dev preview). Slow-mo crashes the app, and sometimes portrait too, but other than that it's a working version with nice results.

[GUIDE] Get the most out of X4 Camera [24/06/2019]

WARNING: I'VE TESTED THIS GUIDE ON STOCK FIRMWARE (OREO AND PIE) ONLY
Hey, just a moment before reading: did I help you? Then consider paying me a coffee or anything for my effort of course this isn't mandatory!
UPDATE: the reddit thread is dead! It will now only link to this guide since updating the same guide two times is pretty useless!
This is an expanded guide for all those people which want to reach the maximum camera quality on their X4.
Please note that this post is not intended to give advices on how to get the best shots on GCAM (but you can do it in comment or ask me, no prob!), but on how to get the best working GCAM possible setup! In other words I won't suggest parameters for HDR+ or Saturation, or custom libs etc...
FOA why you should choose Google Camera instead of the Motorola one? Well I think the following shots speak for themselves:
Cropped detail of an HDR shot:
Moto Camera HDR (taken with wide lens)
Google Camera HDR+ (taken with wide lens)
If you'd like to see more examples just look at this HQ album, you'll be amazed by the details.
Another field in which you can really apprecciate the potential of this camera is the selfie and portrait one. I will spare you from looking at my selfies (you can find one in the previous gallery), so just trust me, or do some googling!
What you need to do in order to use the GCAM on your X4 really depends on what you want to achieve:
1) GCAM 6.2.0.30 for normal lens
- Root needed: NO
- Unlocked Bootloader needed: NO
GCAM 6.2.0.30 adds Time-Lapse feature, and you can simply install it and it will run. There's a lot of ports avaiable, my suggestion goes to this one. Please remember that all the rights belong to Arnova, the original developer.
A couple of things must be tuned in order to get the best experience, so head up to the app settings and:
- on "About" check "advanced options"
- on HDR+ Options:
1) Disabled AWBGains Mod -> ON
2) RAW Format -> RAW10
3) Image Format -> YUV_420_888
4) GCAM wb Mode -> ON
Also, I suggest you to check the "Saturation adjustements" section, because this version really oversaturates photos. Try what levels are the best for you, in my case they were 1.0 - 1.0 for back camera and 1.1 - 1.3 for front camera.
2) GCAM 6.2.0.30 for wide lens
- Root needed: NOT NECESSARILY
- Unlocked Bootloader needed: YES
This is the 6.2.0.30 GCamera with Wide Lens support.
The apk is the same one
After the installation you must enter the package name (org.codeaurora.snapcam)inside the followind /system/build.prop lines:
1) vendor.camera.aux.packagelist
2) vendor.camera.aux.packagelist2
3) ro.camera.cfa.packagelist
You can do this either with a privileged file manager (i.e.: Solid) or with adb pull.
Then activate "Enable aux button" in Settings, and a little tree icon will pop up, allowing you to switch lens.
----------------------
FAQ:
Q: What works in these ports?
A: The following features are fully working:
- HDR +
- Portrait
- PhotoSphere
- Night Sight- Panoramic
- Video
- Slow Motion
- Pixel 2/3 AWB
- TimeLapse
- Motion
Q: What about AR?
A: I'm not interested in it and haven't checked, so I can't assure you that it will work
Q: 60fps videos aren't in 60fps?
A: You can shoot in 60fps by disabling video stabilization in Settings, otherwise 60fps videos will drops to nearly 28-30fps.
Q: Why does my selfie looks purple/green/any other ****ty color?
A: In that case just head over Input model in your port settings and change the front camera model (in my case to Nexus 6P with 6.1 and Pixel 3 for 6.2, but just try). This port also have specific fixes for certain titn problems
Q: I can't even start the camera!
A: this can happen on some devices. To fix try the following: long press on the app icon and use the "take a selfie" shortcut. Wait a moment and the camera should work, allowing you to use it in future just by opening it normally. If it is black even via the selfie shortcut long press the switch camera button, it should work. This procedure must he done only one time!
Q: The 6.2 ports gives me some weird greenish/yellowish balance in photos.
A: This is a problem with Pixel AWB. It reduces chromatic shifts to give you more natural photos, but it can ruin other ones. It usually happens when you are pointing an object which has an intense illumination behind it. If your port allows it just disable it, otherwise select from the viewfinder another White Balancement mode (Cloudy works best for my tastes). Pixel 2 AWB should be the best anyway, and I almost never encounter problems.
Q: Can't install the apk
A: Delete the old version before re-installing.

Need root for it, just download any version compatible with wide lens and put the package name on this line inside build.prop:
vendor.camera.aux.packagelist2
Hi there!
Anybody has any idea why gcam (MGC_6.1.021_MI8_V1a_xcam_0.apk) does not want to take any shots without HDR?? I remember gcam 5.1 working fine without HDR and the shutter speed was obvs way faster. So sometimes I want to take a fast shot and gcam 6.1 won't let me. I already tried changing the input model.
Thanks!
UPDATE: for those who want GCAM 6.1 with Night Sight I updated the suggested apk, with one that looks more stable (the old one used to crash rarely on my phone).

In case anyone had any trouble editing the build.prop remove the following space:
vendor.camera.aux.packagelist2=com.motorola.ccc,co(THIS SPACE)m.dual.GCam,com.motorola.camera2
I realized it while typing, but if you only copy and paste you might not.
With all these camera mods, is there anyway to verify the security of them? I don't think I have ever had problems with an XDA app but these are all hosted offsite.

I don't really check it, cause that's the official repo for the gcam ports, and all the developers (like Arnova etc..) are well known here.

2) Open up the buid.prop file (located in /system/system/). You can either do this by an adb pull command (after booting a custom recovery like TWRP) or with a privileged file manager if you're rooted. Had to remove the space as well, Night Sight works wonders!
I installed option 2 and the rear cam has a yellowish tint. Is there a fix?
Hi, just tried this out on my new moto x4 (The second one with night sight) and it works pretty smoothly. I was just wondering if there was a way to enable the actual front facing flash for selfies and not just brighten the screen up like it does on default (in the recommended app at least)
ALL i want to do is have the stock camera default to manual mode... Or at least REMAIN in manual mode after I set it to that so I don't have to switch to manual every single time I start the camera app. The Auto settings on the stock camera are GARBAGE compared to my Moto X2 (2nd Gen).
Thanks a ton

[Share] Stable gcams v6.2.030 with tips

Hi guys,
Here I'm sharing the most stable gcams after testing the new releases, which works in our mido (it depends on the sensor your phone is shipped with). All credit goes to the respective devs.
https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/cfiles/gcm1/GCam-6.2.030_Arnova8G2_Urnyx05-v1.6.apk
Or
Try this from telegram channel(no external link available). It's working well and currently i'm on it.
https://t.me/rn4photography/107355
Everything works including rear portrait, night sight, time lapse but except slow motion as usual. If you want slow motion, use the attached oneplus cam, install as normal apk, go to settings give all permission & open, it should work.
P.S. - I tried only on pie roms.
Lag & fc fix:-
Use per app profile in kernel manager (fk kernel manager recommended) & create a profile with cpu & gpu governors in performance setting, save & apply for gcam app. Remember the more option you switch on it needs more ram & processing of pics takes more time, toggle only the options that are worth in settings.
I haven't faced any green tint issue, it depends on the sensor your phone has, if you face any, try this method or switch to some other builds.
Green fix in front camera:-
Go to settings
Enable hdr+ controls
Switch to front camera
Turn off hdr+ mode
Done.
Versions of 6.2.030 come to an end. Devs started working on 6.3
Hit thanks if it helped.

Hi guys,
Here's the working version of latest gcam with no lag or fc (at least i haven't faced). I tried lot of latest version gcams but only this one worked nice & smooth for me, so i thought of sharing it along with the settings i use. All credit goes to the respective devs.
https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/cfiles/gcm1/MGC_6.2.030_B-S-G-based_v.0.2_TlnNeun.apk
Everything works including rear portrait, night sight, time lapse but except slow motion as usual. I use oneplus camera in side for slow motion, working like charm. Lemme know if you need that apk.
P.S. I tried only on pie roms. I recommend not to use any magisk module related to cam like fps fix, cam booster, etc (except camera2api enabler).
Lag fix:-
Use per app profile in kernel manager (fk kernel manager recommended) & create a profile with cpu & gpu governors in performance setting, save & apply for gcam app.
Attached are my settings(mostly default except few) & w/wo night sight. You can try various libs as well, need to be connected to internet to download those inside the app, i use google stock libs here, you can experiment with others.

Did you connect to internet, if you're using any firewall give access to camera app, recently they added this libpatcher to reduce app size & it should work, idk why. I just try all the general builds in the official port site & sharing here the ones which works best for our mido.

Yes i mentioned already fc's happen in these builds with lens blur & sometimes while processing night mode. If you really need lens blur then wait for future builds, for stability use the first one (almost no fc's like i said)?
Edit:-
Try the second one in the my first post, added after testing but no photobooth, all are working(ofc except slow motion) and i haven't faced any fc's so far. Try for yourself n lemme know.

Hello everyone, I recently installed AOSP Extended(Android P)on my Redmi Note 4 Snapdragon with Samsung Sensor but I'm having trouble with GCAM. I tried the the GCAM build by Urnyx05 mentioned at the first post of this thread as well as many other builds by Arnova8G2 but although somehow stable they still face some issues. I have trouble with video capture, slow motion, taking HDR photos when zooming in, etc.
Which GCAM from here: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/ would you recommend for me to install that is stable and almost all functions working for Samsung sensor (and if possible is somewhat a recent version)??
Also, is there any gcam build that supports manual shutter?
I believe I found a perfect GCAM 6.2.30 for RN4X

Google Camera 7.2 Astrophotography For Realme X2

I making this thread for Realme X2 Gcam 7+ because the settings and tweaking are a bit different from the the 6.2 and 6.3 Here
This is to avoid confusion as I won't have time to do tweaks on both 6+ and 7+ so, that it.
After trying over 25 different Gcam ports, I finally got a Gcam 7.2 that works for Realme X2 but you have to tweak the settings like I did to get the best.
The full tutorial is on YouTube Here:
I will drop some camera samples and the screenshot of my settings here incase you don't have time to watch the tutorial.
While you are there, you can also watch Adobe photoshot camera for Realme X2 too. I was surprised it worked fine.
It blew away the stock cam in Night sight there is no need to talk about the Astrophotography and I didn't bother uploading the samples comparisons between Night scape and Astrophotography - it's not a fair fight. But you can see it in the video.
Low noise, more details, close to real life color reproduction, and ability to tweak makes this 7.2 a thing of joy.
Still no 4k video but 1080p 30/60fps works fine.
No slow motion and wide angle lens too.
Apart from these, everyother thing works fine.
Great credits to @Urnyx05 who ported the camera for ( several devices) of which realme-x2 isn't one of.
I added a new seperate Youtube video tutorial Mastering Gcam v7.2 Advanced Settings for Realme X2
So you can watch that if you want to get the best images from your Gcam.
I am adding the direct link of the of the Gcam 7.2 by Unryx05 I used to be sure some people don't download the wrong one and have other issues I didn't experience. As I said in the video, I've tested over 25 different Gcam ports so make sure you are using the exact one I am using so as to Easy replicate the issues you are experiencing with my device. And talking about devices mine is Realme X2 EU Version (8/128G) RMX1993.

Hi, thank you so much for the detailed guide and feedback, I'm waiting/looking for a version with slow motion and wide lens working, but still had no success. Please let we know if you find something.:fingers-crossed:
For those who are looking for a working Gcam, I am working on one with the great devs for Gcam including Urnyx05. The problem with Realme and BBK devices are they do not have correct color for gcam to process. Arnova helped greatly to fix it, and Cstark's apk works somewhat now. Also we will never be able to access the ultrawide lens or any other lens as Realme did not grant camera2 ID or access to them. Potentially root could work, but I am rooted but nothing works. We really need a kernel dev for our devices.

I almost gave up on Gcam because of that 'annoying' color processing from realme. But once I learnt to tweak it, I got a higher saturation with Gcam more than the stock cam, I knew that the Realme X2 has a great future with custom Roms. We just have to wait at least for Indian lunch on 17th Dec and maybe the customization will bloom.
