Sumsung j7 duo sm-j720F recovery and root ?? - Samsung Galaxy J7 Questions & Answers

Hi all
I can't find the recovery and how to root my Sumsung j7 duo sm-j720F with oreo android
Any help plz
And thanx in advance .

No one answer seems like no root and twrp at thise time

Unfortunately the reason you can't find it is the same reason, why nobody can find it: it simply does not exist...

Try Magisk. (I've personally tried and succeeded).
1. Extract "boot.img" from J720F's latest stock firmware and copy it to your sd-card.
2. Install latest Magisk Manager apk.
3. Through Magisk patch the stock "boot.img" in Odin flashable ".img.tar" format.
4. Copy the "patched-boot.img.tar" to your pc and load it in Odin's "AP".
5. Make sure your phone is OEM unlocked.
6. Go to recovery mode and make factory reset/wipe data for best result (I've not tested whether it works without factory reset)
7. Go to download mode (Newer models like J720F doesn't support previous download mode access method by pressing and holding volume down+home+power buttons. New method is pressing and holding "volume down+home" button and attaching the usb cable).
8. Flash the "patched-boot.img.tar"
9. After restart finish additional setups in Magisk app.
10. Enjoy!

Thank i ll try
The only thing that i not found is OEM unlocked i have not thise option in my j720f ?

You will find OEM unlock option under "Developer Options" menu. You need to enable the menu first by continuously tapping your "Build Number" for 7 times in a row. Remember that enabling OEM unlock will automatically factory reset your phone. So don't forget to take a backup first.
I suggest you to first install magisk, find the stock boot image and patch it through your phone, then copy it to your pc. Backup everything else you need. Then enable OEM unlock. This way you need to reset your phone only once.

Sir i m try alot to patch boot.img but installing failed error. Can u provide patched boot.img.tar file i really need it
Thank yo

Strange indeed! You should have the option! In my case it's between "Bluetooth HCI snoop log" and "Running services".
What's your firmware version? Is it the latest one? My build number is "R16NW.J720FDDU3ARI4".

But why can't you patch? Is there any problem with Magisk? Or you cannot install the patch through Odin?

Sorry to hear that. Did you tried a factory reset? And still there is no OEM unlock? If yes then wait till the next firmware release. Or continue searching for any other method. If I come across something then will definitely post here.

OTA Update

I just received notification for OTA update. (134MB)
BLU_p0010UU_V11_GENERIC_5.1_20151123-0956
1. Stagefright patch
2. google security patches
3. Mcafee security 2015
4.Other bug fixes
Anyone tried it ?
i want to know if it is going to try and stick me with mcafee. . . happy to see an update, though!
you can remove mcafee after the update.
Can anyone upload ota?
Yes please. I'm rooted and it won't let me download the update. If someone could even offer a system dump that would be helpful.

Also if someone could offer a system dump of the newest upgrade I'd be more than willing to cook up a rooted stock rom. I know I haven't been on the forums much lately at all but I remember working on stuff back in the t-mobile g1 days
Rooting after the update
I only first tried to root my Blu Pure XL after the update was installed. I find that the boot loader is locked and I can not find a way to gain access. I am not sure if the update added this major inconvenience but I suspect it did as the rooting method as described will not work for me at all. Any thoughts or suggestions?

ive updated with every ota and root works fine... boot loader isnt locked... try to flash twrp via fastboot, and if that doesnt work enable developer options in settings and "Enable OEM unlock"
but like i said Ive flashed back to stock FW with SP tool (compete stock boot, recovery, and system ver .11) so if any update would have locked BL it would have locked mine... but it didnt, doesnt, and hasnt...
Follow the thread about twrp... it gives you very easy to follow directions.
Yeah, I did the OTA update before rooting, and it didn't want to allow me after the OTA update.
I downloaded multiple files from all over the place, placed them in a "root" subfolder and it still seemed impossible.
Got it done AFTER 3 days
so...
using flashboot to flash twrp, after the OTA,
then using twrp to flash the SU.zip took 3 days?
what files and "root folder" are you referring to?
Sounds like sever case of lack of reading or lack or user error;
But Im glad you stuck with it long enough to get it working...

Thanks, hardest part was actually getting phone to boot into flash mode.
Specifically, holding Power plus Volume+ is fine, but you have to let go of the power button first, then the Volume+.
Plus, I had to adb reboot before getting the TWRP rom to flash properly....
Not my best effort, but findintg SPECIFIC instructions were difficult, and had to manually search for latest fastflash and TWRP......v2.8.6.0

Fastflash?
Manually search?
Under the Development heading there are 5 topics, 2 of which are for TWRP recoveries (3.0.2 is buggy but works, just takes long time to wipe and restore; and theres SOOOOO many posts about how to flash them and how to use SP Flash Tool... so once again; glad you stuck with it, but Im still going with user error due to fail to RTFM

SM-S550TL - Recovery, Testing, Misc

This thread is for whoever wishes to contribute to the development of this particular model, (Galaxy On5), Any and all help is appreciated!
As per request, I unpacked the stock recovery, repacked it, and attempted to flash it through odin. The result was "failed", on the odin side, but the device did not say anything, (This was in download mode).

OK I have not compiled TWRP with a recovery before so just to be safe I use a boot image. I just split it with Mkboot tools and replace the images in the device tree source code made for the T-Mobile/Metro version.

Test image. Make sure to backup your recovery before you flash this. Use Odin and in the options tab uncheck auto reboot. Once flash is complete pull out the battery and put it back in. Holding volume up button and the home button and power until you get into recovery. Only people who knows what they are doing so we don't have bricks. I used the device tree source code made for T-Mobile/Metro and used the DT image and kernel from an extracted boot image.

It's pointless at the moment even compiling custom recovery for this device as it won't flash.
It seems this device has a locked bootloader.
Well it compiled with no problem with the Metro version all you do is enable development settings and select OEM unlock and USB debugging. I didn't have to use ADB for "fastboot OEM unlock". So I don't know. Thanks for the heads up.

Compiling isn't the issue, it's the fact the image is unsigned. There are no special headers I can see in the stock recovery image, which could cause the issue, so it seems purely down to the bootloader being locked down.
Also regarding OEM unlock and USB debugging.
It isn't and never has been required to enable usb debugging to flash a recovery.
I know this is incorrectly posted all over the Internet, but usb debugging is purely an OS dependent operation and has no use outside of a booted OS.
We are looking at alternative ways, but options are extremely limited.
I took the link down. Thanks.

Also check out the boot image. It's identical to the T-Mobile Metro version. Would you be able to test it out?

That's because you trigger DM variety. You need to flash custom kernel. And yes you can use magisk but I will recommend SuperSU for flawless root priviliges. I'm also using 930FD and it happened with me too in the beginning. So I flashed a custom kernel with dm variety disabled. You can get all the files from XDA forums. Just look for them in Exonys section.
---------- Post added at 07:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:28 PM ----------
Okay here you go.
1) Download TWRP for Galaxy S7 FD from here twrp-3.1.1-0-herolte.img.tar.
2) Download SuperKernel v2.8 from here. Thanks to @Tkkg1994.
3) Download SuperSU Flashable Zip from Recovery Flashable.zip.
4) Download latest Odin from here. Also download the Samsung USB drivers.
Now that you have done downloading files. Let's go to the next steps.
5) Transfer the SuperSU Flashable Zip and SuperKernel Zip to your SD Card. Internal or external doesn't matter.
6) Extract and open Odin on your PC and restart your GS7 in download mode.
7) Connect your phone via a usb cable. If you see odin detected your phone, then it's fine. If it doesn't just reinstall Samsung USB Drivers in your PC.
8) Assuming that your PC has successfully detected your phone, click AP and browse to the TWRP File that you downloaded in your PC. Make sure to uncheck "Auto Reboot" in Odin. This is very important otherwise you will be stuck in the bootloop.
9) Now when the TWRP is flashed. Press and hold Power button + Home + Volume Down for some time and as soon as the screen goes black, switch your finger from Volume Down to Volume Up instantly, not leaving the other two buttons. Keep the buttons pressed until you see the TWRP screen.
10) After booting into TWRP slide right to allow modifications. Now go to Install and select the SuperKernel Zip, swipe right to flash.
11) After flashing SuperKernel, select the SuperSU zip and swipe right to flash.
12) After flashing, reboot system. The phone might reboots a couple to times but don't touch it. Let it complete the boot. That's it.
This is how I did. May the odds be in your favor. Good luck.

Bro, dm variety is an automatic feature included in the stock kernel. When you flash SuperKernel, your stock kernel is replaced by SuperKernel which has dm variety disabled already.

They do not provide info about this point, but in my experience with this build, multi touch bug is fixed. At least pinch zooming in Instagram is now stable.
Is it ok to sideload over custom kernel?
I couldn't complete the update. After download is completed I am getting error "installation problem couldn't update".
I tried 3 to 4 times I even tried restarting the phone even tried downloading from a different network but none of them helped.
I checked it in a Reddit thread that many others also facing the same error like mine.
Is anyone else facing the same issue like this

No issue here, but I'm not unlocked or rooted.
No issues installing on my bone stock unrooted device.

Yes..
You can just flash full OTA zip via twrp.
No wipes needed.
If I have the bootloader unlocked and with root, can I install this update? Without losing my data or having to re-root the phone?

Download the full OTA zip from below.
https://storage.googleapis.com/essential-static/PH1-OTA-OPM1.180104.234.zip
Reboot in TWRP, flash the zip without wiping anything.
Once the zip flashing is complete, reboot to system.
Then you can root again.
PS - Do not forget to remove your secured lock screen (PIN, Password, Pattern etc.) before flashing TWRP.

EDIT: Yipee! It was asking for password. I booted to recovery by Hodling volume down+power. Then select an option to erase data, confirm by pressing volume up. It took a few minutes.
Then it booted with the custom rom!
So, anyone who comes across password can just erase their phone by booting into recovery.
Thanks to joygram! This works, so looking forward to having gapps on my phone now! Good luck to everybody.

So to summarize... If we get chinese version of A6 we can now flash this custom rom to have both :
- gapp (not available on chinese version)
- Widgets and full eink function (not available on russian version)
?

->
I can not make twrp
I just merge system.img and install gapps manually.
so I can not root
but I will try
I used Magisk and patched boot.img in joygram's ROM. Then I replaced the original boot.img with partched one, and then used the same method with QFIL. It works!
But when you boot it reminds you device state is locked. However, Magisk is fully operational and I have used many modules already.
