Anyone working on a new ROM ? - Samsung Galaxy J7 Questions & Answers

Just wondering if anyone is working on a ROM for our phone ... it has been a while so just thought I would ask. You dont need to post details, just a yes would be cool. :good:

Well I'm gonna create a post as soon I get enough time for it to be legible. I'm gonna lay out everything I got going on. Multiple New ROMs are completed. Old ROMs that have since been updated on their original platforms but not on ours yet. Updated. Lots of things.

Oops. Duplicate!

That GREAT NEWS. I am also a custom rom addict and I loved being able to try different roms on this phone. It is amazing how well this phone still performs with it's current age !! - - - Thank you Mr.Duck and as usual I am just patiently waiting for the next port.
Cheers

Yea, I've noticed that everyone homebrew'd their own "custom ROM" but it's just a stock ROM with some modifications, such as init.d support, audio mods, etc.
I don't see any device trees relating to j7eltetmo on GitHub.
There were some startups, but there is no actual (un)official builds on LineageOS (which is the necessity to life).
I will be trying to develop a device and vendor tree (I may have to steal the vendor tree and kernel trees from some other similar devices with the same SoC).
I will try my best.
I can't do it this weekend because of Hurricane Florence but I may be able to start on it next week or so.
I will make an update and a DevDB project when I get an Alpha build up and working...
---------- Post added at 03:56 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:53 AM ----------
Right now, I just use Substratum + Sungstratum (Paid) with some Sungstratum compatible themes...
It's pretty good, not gonna lie.

Some of the others tried to make us a device tree and they never could get it going or Gave up. Even some of the bigger kernels tried to compile for us and it wouldnt go. I actually have device tree ready to go. I've compiled for devices in the menu. I just can't get it to put our device in the damn lunch menu. I'm very very close on that. I've just put it on back burner while I've been porting. I'll explain exactly where we are on a post I'm gonna create asap. I have 4 new ports for our device done. Starting them on upload.

---------- Post added at 03:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:34 PM ----------
What substratum theme?

Substratum is a theme engine. Sungstratum is like an add-on (paid) to make work with touchwiz.. Not gonna lie. Beautiful themes. But it works best with aosp ROMs. Which is why we need something aosp based.

The ROM you're building is AOSP/LOS based? If so, that's huge news for the J700/J700T. Also, hope you stay safe.

Lineage OS

I saw a thread for Lineage OS even for the Nexus 4. When does it come to our Pixel Device? Isn't the support for this device not as great for the Nexus Phones?
Starting out slower here, there are challenges with the new dual boot and some other additional things. Plus I am sure they already pretty much had all the other phones done.
Okay, then let's wait and see. [emoji4]
I am anxiously awaiting LinageOS as well. I am a long time CM user and hopefully some there is enough similarity to keep me entertained. Well I have not used CM in about 2 years but thats because I've been using Blackberry. Man BB10 is pretty awesome but the lack of app support kills it. I loved the hub and that everything was a swipe rather than a push to click style.
I might try a DU rom or the Pure Nexus rom just because I think its going to be awhile for LinageOS to get a rom going on the pixel.
Nice to see there is a build up for XL users hopefully sailfish will get some love too?

I would totally do that, but since I'm really more a user than a developer ( i can barely unlock my bootloader and install a custom recovery, haha) i have no clue how to do that.
so..
Has anybody built this rom in the meantime?
best regards!

Even if I see almost everywhere that marlin and sailfish are almost the same with only 1 difference (screen size), I can't find any working build. There were a few (like the one from invisiblek), but none of them was working. I guess the XL is much more popular (just like the opposite of my earlier thoughts). ? Until we get some dev support, we still have the Hexa ROM, which based on Lineage and works pretty well (even if the dev also does not own the device). ?
Sailfish builds resumed yesterday. Look in the XL thread.

It's in the XL forum and it's called lineage os
i am looking into getting sailfish (although i probably wont), but i can try and build lineage for it, for you to see if anyone wants to see if it works.
edit- seeing as a few of you have thanked this, i imagine you would want it, previously i had troubles, but im trying again.
i think i saw elsewhere, that there are already official builds, but ill carry on, i find this stuff fun!
edit- i can make the kernel, i can also build recovery (although no file is made ), but there is always an error to do with dependencies, probably because half the stuff is in marlin rather than sailfish, but im not good enough to know how to fix it, and i dont really have the time to enquire, but otherwise, you can probably find builds elsewhere.

Dude this is awesome! I would also love to know how you are doing this so if I could ever hop in and help I'd be able to.
Aha! Sweet!
In case there's anything of interest in my messy repos to assist, here they be:
device / kernel / vendor
I'm still sick. lol. Always sick. And my computer is sold today to pay bills, so this project is dead for me for a while.
Glad to see y'all have continued though! This phone deserves a solid Lineage build, it's going to fly so well on that.
My kernel is a mess right now, I was just in the process of adding back in the full spectrum of frequencies (just to see if I could do it). Device and vendor repos both are fat and ripe for pruning. I was going by the add everything in first, then fix each lib and shim on boot. Perhaps not the smartest method (definitely not).
Also ms330/k330 repos up there, which were almost booting CM-13 fully, just some small lib errors. Last I checked nobody had anything built for the LG M1 yet, which is also a damn shame! I was close before I fell into the hospital.
Anyway, kickass that y'all back on the job.

Feel free to gank anything if you find it useful.
If you have any issues getting CM past that boot screen, I'd be willing to test and trawl the logs for solutions. I have *a lot* of experience in that specific situation, and love the diagnostics that come with it.
Once booting it'll be soo easy to get things running smooth.

Thanks for your hard work.
This appears to be a ms550 build as opposed to a k550 build. (metro v. tmobile).
Sympton: Wifi is unable to detect any hotspots and wifi will not actually turn on.
Can you provide instructions or any resources for replacing the radio/modem with the proper partitition from these files?
Is it nothing more than going into fastboot and flashing a modem partition or even simpler changing apns in the UI or in an sqlite database?
Thanks again.

That thread was for lineage 13 and i stopped working on it many months ago after some beta builds that can be found in the recovery thread, atm lineage 14.1 is in developing.
So are you making a Lineage 14.1 rom that is compatible for the k550? And is the cyanogen rom complete for installations or is there any bugs? I really hate using lg's ui. P.S. I'm a newbie to this stuff

Possible, but too hard. We need new kernel device tree sources with new android versions. Than we must build it from sources Than boot it. After this we must fix bugs. So we need more developers in this Pico forum
But Google will release a new Android edition (Android Oreo Go edition) for low-end devices like Pico
Maybe we have this in the future.

thanks
So half a year later they release nougat source code
I dont know why it is no surprise coming from xiaomi

Does it really matter?
I believe kernel sources are released once only and there are so many devices that get ROMs and Kernels made for them - years after their official development has stopped. For eg. - If sources are released for Lollipop (and not for Nougat), LOS is also there for Nougat.
Could you please clarify and how much time will it take for an Oreo kernel (tentatively in your opinion, obviously)?
@sooti could you pitch in?
we should be thankful that we got the second latest kernel source code. this is enough for the great developer gang to get the custom kernel and rom working for MIA1.

Generally speaking any new android version simply requires a few commits to support the latest features especially security, they are usually common across all devices with some devices needing some extra patches to bring it up to oreo (usually selinux related) but for the most part its not complicated, The complex part is setting up the device tree and vendor IMO, for custom roms that is. but i'm not a huge kernel dev so i don't know.

Thanks for clearing that up. Considering many devs have switched to from other devices running Oreo, I don't think it'll be an issue then.

Yes, we have it already.

Will this phone have custom roms?

It's out for some time now and I am just wondering because the kernel sources are out and not a single rom in the rom Section
Two things are needed:
Qualcomm releasing CAF source (LINK)
Devs
And in my opinion is just a matter of time.
Just don't expect 646512357 ROMs and 265412 kernels.
So if the delayed s845 sources are the reason, none of the current s845 devices should have much development, right?
And just lineageos would be nice or a similar close to stock Rom.

Oneplus has the biggest development community out there. Even the 1+1 still has lots of devs... The notch is the only reason I bought the 2s instead of the 1+6. The roms currently available for the 1+6 are optimized OOS roms (stock roms with a few optimisations) you can compare them to xiaomi.eu(those are NOT the global Roms) roms which are already available for our device.
I'd love to have a stock rom like lineage OS or something similar.
To be honest, coming from Nexus devices ever since I hate MIUI. It's well designed and all, but the app integration doesn't work. I can't even send SMS answers to notify incoming callers that I will call them back when using the Google messages app. Maybe with the miui app it would work but I don't see the point in having standard apps that do not work.
The launcher is not my favourite and I don't like the phone/dialer either. And the worst is, that can't be changed at the moment because there is no working APK file..at least I haven't found one.
So please some dev make a lot of people happy and bring us some stock android rom. P would be great!

You do realize you can at least change the launcher without any issues, right?

Of course. I've been running the pixel launcher since flashing the global ROM.
Only the phone / dialer is still miui and I'd like to use the Google one but with no luck so far.

It's working here, you just have to give it all permissions in settings and change the standart phone app in settings to the google one

Can you point me to the APK you're using?
I can't give it permissions because I haven't found an apk to install. All attempts failed and stopped with the device saying app not installed....without any reason.

I tried 4 different APIs from there. None of them will install. Which version should I get.
Tried the latest arm64 nodpi. Does this matter or is this the wrong one for the mimix2s? I'm on global ROM version 9.5.19 android 8.0 if that matters...

Arm64 nodpi should be the right one. I just tested it with 2617680 and it installed fine

It's closer to an aosp base so kernel dev is easier. Also kernels won't fix the battery drain that miui causes. Also those 2 roms are just OxygenOS tweaks. They aren't compiled from source. No dev for 845 devices will happen until caf source is released

Downloaded it from apkmirror but the installation fails. Says app not installed.
Am I missing something? Any security permissions? The one I linked in the pervious post installed right away but it's modded somehow.

You just have to allow your browser to install .apk files that's all... Strange but now you got a working version, right?
