After 3+ hrs of trial and error and help from awesome xda member Peter KIKI, I finally managed to root SC-02J (950J)(D) on the latest Oreo firmware.
Also huge thanks to tomatolei for his kernel which made this possible.
Requirements :
1. PC/Laptop
2. Latest Oreo firmware for SC-02J (Updato or Samfirm).
3. Latest TWRP for Snapdragon S8 - Link
4. Modified kernel (9500.img) thanks to @tomatolei
5. Wifi fix (optional) thanks to @Peter KIKI
DL : 9500.img and wifi fix - link (Updated)
Instructions :
1. Flash the latest Oreo firmware with Odin 3.13.1 . (This will erase your internal storage so backup anything important beforehand)
2. Boot up normally. (Skip Wifi and account setup to speed up the process)
3. Enable Developer Options and then enable OEM unlock.
4. Power off your device, boot in download mode.
5. Open Odin > go to Options tab and untick "Auto Reboot"
6. Flash TWRP (AP slot).
(Warning : After flashing TWRP, boot straight to recovery)
(Make sure to "Allow Modifications" when TWRP boots up)
7. Go to "Wipe" > "Format Data" > type "yes". then go to "Reboot" and select "Recovery"
8. Once in TWRP go to "Install" and Flash the "9500.img" as "boot".
9. Reboot to System, first boot might take longer than usual and reboot couple of times.
(Important : If wifi not working, skip the network and account setup)
10. After initial setup is done, power off and boot to recovery and flash Magisk 16.0 or newer.
(You'll also need to flash "wifi fix.zip" if your wifi isn't working)
UPDATE : TWRP Oreo data mount fix : Thanks @Peter KIKI
replace fstab.qcom in /system/vendor/etc/ with the one from attachments(unzip first).
* Xposed not tested.
** This method works on SC-02J or SCV36 loaded with SC-02J firmware.
***SCV36 with KDDI firmware not tested.

Hi, Can You provide a step by step guide for Galaxy S8 SC-02J. Aurora Rom installation guide. I tried before and now my EFS (Baseband & IMEI) are unknown after installing the stock firmware. I have a screenshot of my IMEI Number.
If I install Aurora ROM, will my phone start working again?
Thank You.

SM G9500 Oreo 8.0 OK
Thank you for the guide.
I try this on my S8 China Version, and it's work.
1. Flash TWRP;
2. Format Data;
3. Flash Fusion Kernel;
4. Wait until all is good;
5. Reboot to recovery and flash the wifi fix zip;
6. Reboot, the magisk is here and rooted.

Unless you have an EFS backup, you will not get your Baseband/IMEI back.

It's really annoying

I was wondering if you were still developing this device @texhno04?
I've been trying to root it with the latest Android Pie update, but didn't get any luck yet.
Did anyone try and succeed?

sorry to say I moved on from S8. Never buying Snapdragon Samsung ever again they are the absolute worst when it comes to rooting and custom ROMs.
afaik, there isn't any rooting method available for G9500(HK/China Model) on Android Pie yet (HK/China and Japanese models share the same hardware).
keep in touch with @Peter KIKI, he helped me with Oreo root on Japanese S8.
I'm sure there will be a rooting method sooner or later for SCV36/SC-02J with the G9500 Pie kernel.

Yeah, I can't blame you on that.
I'm hoping to get good news with Fusion Kernel's project indeed. I'll sit tight and keep my fingers crossed. :fingers-crossed:
Thank you for your answer and for your previous work with Oreo, any support for this device is always greatly appreciated!

Hi, I've been following this suggestion to root my docomo phone. On step 9, right after I flash 9500.img as a boot, it's been bootlooping for 15 minutes. I am aware you mentioned it will take time and several reboots, but I think this is bootloop :crying:

Thanks ..
I might as well post this here -> -> How to: Root and repair data on the FRD-L04 - B320

Will android pay stop working even if I use the official beta 7.0?
Thanks man, but is there any successful way to flash B324 so far?
Is Wi-Fi calling enabled in this beta?
Managed to do the same using Charles app (see https://forum.xda-developers.com/ho...-to-nougat-t3510275/post69885525#post69885525) without any unlocking and flashing.
I have the FRD-L04B567 phone. I installed the TWRP for the Honor 8. I have installed a different ROM (CM13.1 ROM) successfully. I followed your instructions to the "T" in post #1 . The install of update.zip stopped at /cust with an error. I tried wiping and rebooting but am stuck in the "honor" bootup screen. Unable to force back into TWRP or fastboot or ADB at this time. Still picking up the pieces....
UPDATE: I forced phone into Huawei eRecovery screen and selected factory reset/wipe That got Nougat running but there is no keyboard and Google will only allow voice for any input. Since my wifi is encrypted, I cant give Nougat a password to get on the internet. I am creating a temporary unencrypted network to see if I can get further.
UPDATE: TWRP was wiped so I will reinstall. Then I will try update the regional update (second update mentioned)
UPDATE: Reflashed TWRP 3.0.2.0 for Honor 8, I can get into the bootloader but not recovery, eRecovery works but...(worthless). I cant flash the second update.zip because I cant get TWRP started. Obviously 3.0.2.0 is not compatible with Nougat, I may try 3.0.3.0? why not...
UPDATE - Flashing TWRP 3.0.3.0 was dumb. Now ADB sees the device (good) but I can not get to bootloader or recovery. TWRP flashes (displays) once a second and will not start (bad) . Hopefully someone can learn from my quest.
So, can someone help me proceed from a state where ADB sees the device? thanks Maybe extract update.zip?

Thanks for the reply, I finally got TWRP 3.0.2.0 for Honor 8 flashed (but now it won't work), I believe Nougat and TWRP aren't compatible. Huawei Hisuite said that phone was fine and recovery not necessary??? I disagree. I think I will have to wait for TWRP that is Nougat compatible with FRD-L04

If you want to get back to any working state, i recovered from 7.0 unbootable to vanilla 6.0 like so (for frd-l09, but probably still applies):

// edit, also for completeness, i then flashed twrp 3.0.2 (official) and installed the cm 7.1.1 from the other thread here. All working fine.

[guide] how to root zenfone 3 official oreo firmware

HERE IS A STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO ROOT ZENFONE 3 FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE UNLOCKED THEIR BOOTLOADER AND ROOTED THEIR NOUGAT ROM PREVIOUSLY.
-first of you need to update your firmware to oreo.
-if you have unlocked your phone bootloader and/or rooted, you need to download and flash the latest nougat firmware through stock recovery which is 'WW-14.2020.1712.85' here https://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-3-ZE552KL/HelpDesk_BIOS/
-after you finished flashing the latest nougat firmware, boot your phone as usual. and then download the official oreo firmware which is 'WW-15.0410.1712.31 here https://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-3-ZE552KL/HelpDesk_BIOS/
-then put that 'WW-15.0410.1712.31' firmware to your SD card
-your phone will automatically detect an oreo firmware is available to be flashed that are located on your SD card then click on update
-then your phone will go to the updating/flashing process took around 5-10 minutes. after you're done your phone are now using the official stock firmware.
-then to proceed to root your oreo firmware, you need to flash a TWRP recovery. you can download twrp recovery here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1KYX8G6wgOa_X7uJfIar7ENuk2Q1nQyWB
-choose the right model for your phone either ZE520KL(5.0inch) or ZE552KL(5.5inch)
-rename the twrp recovery you just downloaded to "oreo_twrp_recovery.img"
-then put your phone to 'fastboot' mode and connect usb to laptop/pc
-put the twrp recovery that you just downloaded inside the 'Kit Root Zenfone 3' on your laptop/pc
-press shift and right click then click on 'Open command window here'
-then on cmd, type "fastboot flash recovery oreo_twrp_recovery.img" and click enter
-it will tell you flashing is finished
-then click on cmd type 'fastboot reboot' and click enter
-then your phone are now using TWRP recovery instead of the stock recovery
-next, go to magisk manager . com (no space)
-download the magisk manager apk version 5.5.5 [2.4mb]
-download magisk v15 [5.81mb] zip file
-boot your phone and install the magisk manager apk like normal
-then put the magisk v15 zip file to your SD card
-then boot your phone to TWRP recovery and flash the magisk v15 zip file
-after done, reboot system from twrp recovery
-open the magisk manager app and you're ROOTED!
done. your welcome.
[MY REVIEW OF THE OFFICIAL OREO FIRMWARE AFTER ALMOST A WEEK OF USE]
-oreo battery life sucks compare to stock nougat rom
-i can notice the battery drain faster than when im on nougat
-system performance, for me 5-10% faster than on nougat, especially the in settings or swiping the notification panel, other than its the same
-gaming performance are 10-15% worse than on nougat. when i play a game called 'Dokdo', moving the ship around the ocean are smoother when im on nougat and the framerate are stable, but when i play the game on oreo, the framerate are lower and i can feel the difference when im playing on nougat and oreo. the game feels more smoother when im on nougat compare to oreo. other games performance also noticeable when i play 'Rules of Survival', i can feel the framerate are slightly smoother on nougat compare to oreo
-there's no bugs that i found so far
[MY FINAL REVIEW OF ZENFONE 3 OFFICIAL OREO FIRMWARE]
-oreo battery life is real ****, i dont even have many apps installed and the battery life is already ****
-i prefer the nougat firmware compare to oreo.
-the only thing that i like about oreo is the quick settings icon are changed, it looks cleaner and smaller compare to nougat the quick settings icons are bigger and doesn't look good
-everyday i check on https://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-3-ZE552KL/HelpDesk_BIOS/ hoping there's a new oreo firmware update saying 'battery life improved' or something thats all i want
*14 february guide updates*
incase you guys hasn't already know, there's a second(current latest) oreo updates from asus, the firmware is called 'Version WW-15.0410.1801.40'.
if you are on rooted oreo firmware 'Version WW-15.0410.1712.31' and you want to update to the latest oreo version and root it again. follow this steps below:
*NOTE: you can't proceed to flash the stock firmware if you're phone are rooted so you need to unroot or remove magisk root first before flashing the oreo firmware otherwise the flashing process will fail or a possible of bootloop will occur, so follow the steps below carefully*
-first, you need to remove magisk root by downloading the magisk uninstaller zip file from the magisk manager . com (no space) or from their xda page
-then flash/install the magisk uninstaller zip file from TWRP recovery
-after you flashed the uninstaller, you're phone are now unrooted. then you can proceed to flash the 'Version WW-15.0410.1801.40' firmware.
-after you flashed the 'Version WW-15.0410.1801.40' firmware your TWRP recovery will be replaced back to asus stock recovery
-so you need to reinstall TWRP recovery as usual through fastboot
-reboot your phone as usual and as you know your phone root access is currently gone since you uninstalled magisk earlier
-to root your phone back, download and install the latest magisk manager from their site or xda site
-click on download zip file, and put that magisk zip file on your SD CARD
-boot to twrp recovery
-flash the magisk zip file that are located on your SD CARD
-reboot system
-now your latest 'Version WW-15.0410.1801.40' firmware are now rooted again.
YES I KNOW IT IS SUCH A HASSLE, BUT THIS IS WHAT YOU MUST GET THROUGH IF YOU WANT ROOT ACCESS. ANDROID IS NOT EASY.
By the way, don't go to magiskmanager<dot>com. It's not official.
Download Magisk from the official thread here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445

Careful with that site, as that's not an official distribution site for Magisk. There was a tweet from XDA regarding that site within the past few weeks. The only 100% trustworthy place to get it is from the official thread.
I'm getting better battery life on Oreo than I did on Nougat. I did do a factory reset after installing Oreo, though, so if you haven't done that it's worth a try.
You're right about the framerate issue with some games. Some that ran fine on Nougat get oddly choppy at times on Oreo. The last Oreo beta (although it had the same version number) was a heck of a lot worse than the release version, so hopefully the next update will help.
the reason why i put the magisk manager official site is because i rooted my phone by downloading both the magisk manager apk and the zip file and the app and the zip file from their official site works for rooting my phone so i think there is no harm. if you feel insecure you can just go to https://forum.xda-developers.com/app...mless-t3473445
Not working.
I exactly followed the steps but I could not install twrp. Stock recovery still keeps running.
However, If I use the previous version of twrp (20180203) phone cannot boot, then had to flash roms from M to O.
Edit: I tried over and over again and succeeded at last, but I do not know how exactly!

So yesterday I tried flashing TWRP but no luck.
I'm on the latest firmware (1801), bootloader unlocked, stock recovery with no root.
When I try to flash TWRP with fastboot, I get no error message but I still have the stock recovery instead of TWRP.
I tried multiple times and downloaded the file again but it doesn't work.
Any idea ?
aftee you flashed twrp through fastboot. type on "fastboot reboot" on cmd. then if your phone directs you to stock recovery instead of twrp. click on reboot system in your stock recovery. then it will brings you to twrp. i know its weird. but thats what happen to me too at first.
then if you finally got to twrp and you reboot system from twrp but your phone still brings you back to twrp recovery everytime or it stucks on asus logo (bootloop), dont panic, go to twrp and flash your stock oreo firmware that are located from ur sdcard from twrp, then when you reboot system from twrp, then your phone will boot to normal. dont worry it wont erase data.
try this. it works for me.

I've been looking for how to unlock zen 3 oroe. but i did not find it. please help me. i want to root my phone.
Here is the official unlock method.
You will not be able to get OTA updates then, but zenfone3 may not get any upgrade anyway.
I found the solution to my problem (couldn't boot into twrp after flashing it)
1-After flashing twrp, do not fastboot reboot !
2-Unplug the device
3-Power it off (long press power key)
4-Power it on into recovery mod (long press power key + low volume key)
You should end up in twrp recovery or on a screen suggesting to boot into recovery which you do
5-A message will appear asking to allow modification of twrp recovery. Swipe to allow.
6-Done !

After updating on 15.0410.1801.40, i flash TWRP through fastboot, and i get stuck in bootloop on Asus logo. I go back in TWRP,flash the 15.0410.1801.40 zip, and i remain in bootloop.
With a custom recovery, we didn't need any No Verity File Encrypt like root in Nougat? (On nougat I root my ZE552KL by following this process: https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-3/how-to/twrp-recovery-3-0-2-root-zenfone-3-t3569926)

if you got bootloop after trying to reboot ur phone from twrp after flashing twrp. flashing the stock oreo rom from twrp again will make your phone boot. thats how i did it. im not sure why it doesn't work for you.
we still need "no verity..." message in oreo. that no verity message appears are actually caused by your phone bootloader unlocked not because of your phone rooted.

Guide How to root Android 8.0 Oreo Stock ROM on Galaxy S7 ( 100% Working )

Hi . i see too many peoples have problem on rooting Android 8.0 Oreo Stock Rom on Galaxy S7 ( edge ) and they cant get passed from the verification field error ! ok its bcuz they do only 1 step wrong , here i just wanna tell you all the steps 1 by 1 to help you make it work .
ok first , if you wanna have a Rooted stock Oreo Rom , you need to factory reset your device , so backup everything you need then follow the steps :
1- Download Odin 3.13.1 -------- TWRP 3.2.3 Recovery -------- Android 8.0 Oreo Stock Rom -------- Magisk v 17.1 -------- no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0 .
Copy Magisk v17.1 and no-verity-opt files into your SD card , or you can copy them after you installed TWRP using mount !
2- Go to Odin , and flash the Stock Rom oreo , BUT before you start go to Options and deselect F. reset time and Auto reboot .

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
3- when the Rom flash is done . just hold Power + volume down + home buttons to restart the phone . keep holding the buttons to return Download mode again !
NOTE : you have to reboot to download mode again after flashing Stock Rom . bcuz odin wont install TWRP and will stop on waiting for connection if you do flash TWRP right after flashing rom without reboot ! just after flashing ROM , do a reboot with device buttons and keep holding them to go straight to download mode again . then you can flash TWRP .
4- now go to Odin again and now Flash the TWRP recovery . before you start go to options and deselect F .reset time and Auto reboot .
5- now hold Power + Volume down + Home buttons , when your device screen goes off , fast switch the buttons to Power + Volume up + home to boot into TWRP recovry .
6- now go to Wipe and select Format Data . it will ask you to type yes . type yes and continue . you do this to remove encryption on your phone memory .
NOTE : Just select Format data . DON'T select advanced wipe or swip to factory reset . you have to select Format data and it will ask you to type "yes" . do it and go on .
7- now go to reboot and reboot to TWRP recovery again ! ( you have to reboot to recovery bcuz you cant reach /DATA when you do Format data )
8- now go to install , and install Magisk and no-Verity-opt .
9- now restart your phone normaly and let it boot up and do the first boot settings .
10 - thats it , now you can see Magisk on your apps list and your Stock Rom is rooted .
NOTE : for the guys that already installed Stock oreo Rom , they dont need to flash Rom again , they can skip Step 2 and 3 !
just do all the steps 1 by 1 as i said and it will work 100% . some guys cant make it work bcuz : 1 - they dont do Format Data before installing Magisk and they get "cant mount /data error" and verification field pops up . 2- they do format data after installing magisk !!!! thats crazy bcuz you just clear Magisk when you do format data after installing it .
i hope this guide be helpful for you guys .

Once you have to wipe data and restart to recovery again and then only install new Rom resolves data mount error.
Do thet but still error in twrp
Ist there any way to root without wipeing data?
Patching boot.img with Magisk dont work. I guess because of lz4...
Thank you, this is a great guide! Worth to mention that TWRP is flashed as AP in Odin, though.
Is this working for Galaxy S7 Edge SM-G935F ?
Hey hnegrao,
I've rooted my girlfriends Galaxy S7 Edge SM-G935F successfull with this instruction
@Arona67 thank you very much for sharing this instruction and your effort!
There's a question left: Can I remove Magisk and TWRP after successfully rooting?
I'd like to note that I've only needed the root permissions to change the build.prop file entry ro.config.tima=1 to 0; That S-Health works in spite of increased knox counter.
Best Regards
unfortunately I have a problem with this walkthrough. when I want to upload twrp I have the message: custom binary (recovery) blocked by frp lock. I have the newest soft.

Yes,it works like a charm.
Just follow all the steps and you will be fine.
Hi. Many thanks for this.
I have to recover some data from my phone and for that I need root.
My question is, if I install TWRP, Format data, and then install Magisk, will it format the internal SD card? I mean will I still be able to recover those files or will they be gone? If they will be gone, it defeats the purpose of me rooting the phone.
EDIT: I have a G930W8 (Exynos)

You will lose everything once you format the internal sd, better think twice.
Great post, followed all the instructions and my s7 is now running android 8 fine. One issue I've had, when I try to encrypt the device from the Samsung settings it starts the process off reboots twice and then comes back with a failure message whereby you have to fully reset the phone again as per instructions at top of post. Any way to get encryption to work on this?
Thanks all
Same process does NOT work on the latest Oreo update.
Flashed rom
Flashed twrp
Formatted data
Rebooted to recovery
Installed no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0.zip
Installed Magisk 17.3 (same result even if Magisk is skipped, tried w/o due to this issue)
Rebooted to system and letting it boot up
Rebooting straight to recovery, and still get unable to mount data due to encryption.
Something in the latest stock kernel seem to be circumventing the no-verity-opt-encrypt zip since it was working on the previous update.
EDIT: Got it working by following this post and using the remove-encryption.zip found in that thread (this post).
Still no idea why no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0.zip didn't work even without Magisk.
Does it work on S7 Edge 9350 stock ROM (Snapdragon) ?
What is the purpose of flashing o-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0 ? Can someone please clarify. ?

* Unlock bootloader first
* Reboot recovery and reboot system now behave normally after flashing.
* No more patching in Magisk manager at all.
* Be aware, first clean boot, hangs on building cache, hard reboot after waiting about 3min and you'll boot past this
* If simply updating your existing TWRP, v9 upwards, you only need to flash the TWRP.img in recovery. No need to reflash kernel and Magisk.
Process from bone stock
1. Flash TWRP.tar in Odin
2. Reboot directly into TWRP
3. Format data, reboot recovery
4. Flash custom kernel (Android 10, this is optional)
5. Flash encryption disabler.
6. Unmount system, Flash Magisk 20.4
7. Reboot system
Process from existing TWRP
1. Flash TWRP.img to recovery
2. Reboot recovery
3. Flash Kernel zip
4. Unmount system and Flash Magisk zip
5. Reboot system

WooHoo!..and THANKS! and WooHoo!
If anyone tries flashing this on the LTE device let me know if it works out fine, including booting into system and checking WiFi and everything works.

Ok I'll check the tar file later. You can try since you are already rooted, pulling the recovery.IMG out if the tar, and using dd to flash it in an terminal emulator if you're Keen.
Or create another recovery.tar using 7zip to flash in Odin.
It may be checking the device number and denying it

Try this, it's recovery only, you will need to be pre rooted

Try this, you will need to be pre rooted, this tar doesn't include the boot.img or nulled vbmeta.img.
And I used a different tool to package the tar

Did it boot to a rooted system or stock?
If you could go into the telegram thread and we can chat about it in there, id like to get this sorted out for other users
Finally, I could boot into TWRP after using dd to flash it in an terminal emulator. After that I flash the encryption disabler and format data then I try to reboot into TWRP again but it did not. In stead it's booting in to the system now. Still stuck in Samsung logo now.

The tablet is running fine now. Magisk is working right after the tablet booted. But it just can't boot into TWRP. Tried to reboot to recovery from Magisk and manually still not working. Seems to stuck about a minute or 2 at this screen everytime I reboot or try to boot into TWRP then it just boot straight to the system.

You can't boot to recovery from magisk. It won't work.
You need to manually reboot to recovery.
Hold down vol up and bix button until the splash screen, then let go and reapply the buttons again quickly, while the red writing is present. Keep holding them. That is how I get to recovery.
But they're may be more going on seeing as though you got a t865

Seems like that tar file was screwed up somehow. It wouldnt flash formme either, I've repackaged it and now it does. And I boot into recovery no issues.
Are you still having trouble getting into recovery?

How do I upgrade/clean flash from OOS 9.0.9(rooted) to 11 stable?

Hello friends,
Current setup:
Device: OP6
ROM: Stock OOS 9.0.9 stable
Kernel: ElementalX-OP6-3.19
Root status: Rooted with Magisk 23.0
TWRP 3.4.0 | blu_spark v9.115 - Current active slot: A
I wish to wipe the device and clean flash OOS 11 stable then install the latest TWRP, EX Kernel, and root using the latest Magisk. Please help me with the process so that I don't brick the device inadvertently.

Please make sure to take a back up of EVERYTHING ( be it any preferred method you use) . Once you have a backup of your complete phone please proceed to the next step by download the latest OOS 11 Full version( Not the OTA update).
Try updating your phone through Settings -> System Update.
Once the update is complete , Please make sure to reboot your phone to recovery mode once. Which should now be installed with Stock Recovery.
In some cases the stock recovery wipes everything on your phone and reboots.
If not you can wipe using the option Erase Everything including photos in memory.
Once the phone reboots and setup is complete. Reboot your phone once or twice.
The above step may sound weird but it helps you to identify any issue before next step.
MAKE SURE TO FOLLOW THE STEPS AS I HAVE STATED ELSE YOUR PHONE WILL END UP WITH CRASH DUMP MODE.
1.Make sure you have necessary ADB drivers installed on your PC.
2.Reboot your phone to Bootloader mode either by using command prompt or by pressing Volume + and Power key. (CMD : adb reboot bootloader )
3.Use Fastboot command to install the attached recovery file. Please do not use other TWRP files. ( CMD : Fastboot boot boot.img) ( boot.img is the file name attached).
4. The phone should reboot to TWRP recovery mode.
5. Under TWRP menu Navigate to Advanced -> Select Install Current TWRP.
6. The step should install your phone with TWRP on both slots.
7. Once install reboot your phone and check if OOS11 is still intact.
8. To verify if TWRP is installed as your recovery . Reboot your phone to recovery mode.
9. Once in recovery mode you can install the attached Magisk V23 apk using menu Install -> choose Magisk apk.
10. Reboot your phone and install Magisk using the same APK.
Viola you are all good to go if you have installed everything as mentioned.
Hope it helps now.
