Background battery drain with Pie - Essential Phone Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey people,
Recently installed Android Pie and noticed that battery drain in background has increased.
Anyone else having this situation with the new system?

You are not the only one...I'm trying to figure it out as well...I know on the second beta I had the battery life of the gods. I went 3 days without charging my phone and still had 40% left but after that beta it was all down hill...have you noticed Google play services consuming more battery?

Sometimes. But most of the time play services wasn't that much of a drainer. The worst part is that the "full device usage" has been useless ever since the official release. And I keep all of my apps restricted not to operate in the background.
I have tried going back to Oreo and then installing the update from there. Let's see how it goes from there

I've had Google play services go crazy from time to time on Pie. Finally installed greenify and have greenified as much as possible. Will see what happens. Though I've notice play services really eating up battery in airplane mode.
Also, I think the play store is triggering play services issues. Will see in a day or two.

I've noticed an increase. Lost about 10% last night which is more than I used to. hoping that now pie is final that essential can make optimisations and additions specific to ph-1 that will help.

No problems for me, I'm seeing around 5 sot.
I do d do a full reset though.

I had horrible drain right away. Checked BBS/Gsam and it was clearly GP services and the play store. Just did a stop/clear cache/clear data on both and yesterday I got 8hr SOT.

I've done this several times on 9.0, only to have GP services suddenly eat the battery a couple days later. Installed greenify and seen that the play store keeps restarting and the Google app was always working. So to test i disabled them. Will see what comes.
I hope yours behaves!

From the looks of it greenify has been helpful. I resisted on using it because for some reason it made my phone touch-vibrate even with battery saver on. But let's try it again and see how it goes

It takes a few days to settle down.

Hi I had an issue too. XD
Before pie I used to use 7h but now only 5h30
I found problem. It was intelligence battery maneger
I turned off after that okey.
Go settings -) bettery -) bettery manager -) turn off manage apps automatically

Hi my battery is dying fast since 9.0. I think i had about 2mins SOT since last charge and it was about 60%. I too noticed Google App running constantly so I disabled it. Battery is still loosing charge quickly.
If it is the battery optimizer it may day a few days to settle down. I will report back any findings.
On a side note, I installed OTA, then did a full wipe.

If all else fails, factory reset the thing.

I did a fresh install. Noticed overnight 7-8hrs of off time on the screen, it is using about 10-12 percent. Normally 4-5 percent it would use. Running custom elemental kernel as well. Not cool.

Disabling the Google app and or Google play store caused Google play services to eat even more battery.
Now my current test is to enable all Google bloatware. If you notice Google is tying in all there stuff together especially with assistant. My current guess is, because of this if you have certain Google products disabled etc... It causes a circle and constant attempt by one or more apps to accomplish something that's disable.
I'm sure the Googlers don't disable all the Google stuff we do.....

These are my current stats. I turned on battery saver at 15%.

That is nothing tho...I was getting over 8hrs SOT with 8.1. Now I am only getting 4-5 on 9.0.

Heh I am getting between 8 and 12 hrs sot per charge uptine between 15 and 24 hrs the lower numbers are when exclusively on the cell network with no wifi. This is about 1 to 2 hours better than 8.1

I flashed on release. This was what I have gotten so far. Bare minimum use. It does drain fast when in use, but idle is semi decent.

Check out WiFi Calling, I think it's turned on by default. I turned it off and my phone has been pretty good today. Too early to tell if it's better then Oreo, but much be then yesterday.

Battery drain while idle

Is anyone having issues with battery drain while not using their phone? My wife and I both have noticed pretty good battery drain while we're not using our phones. Going into settings and checking under the battery menu, all we show is phone idle. I've adjusted all my settings to be as battery friendly as possible including turning of wifi and mobile data, minimum brightness, 30 second screen time out, constantly clearing my recents, black wallpapers, daydream off. We're still losing battery life pretty quickly and for the life of me I can't figure it out.

Does anyone have anything to add to this?

I seemed to incur significant standby drain because I disabled some apps. I just reenabled them this morning. Still need to keep an eye on things, but I will copy my days results from the other thread. To see more details on what has been going on, check the other thread.
Right now I am at 66% with 2:05 SOT and 16 hours since unplugging. The Android OS, held awake, and Google Play Services are all somewhat reduced.

As far as disabling apps, the only thing I've disabled are the vzw apps and also the Amazon apps. There's a lot there that I don't know what they are so I just left them alone.
As far as my idle time is concerned, it had gotten a little bit better, but it is nowhere even close to what I could get out of my nexus 6. When I'm actually using the phone, the battery drains pretty quickly as well. I installed gsam battery monitor after reading through the thread that you posted above. I figure I'll need to wait a couple of days to get a true feedback from that app. Once it stabilizes, I'll report back what it says.

I have recently noticed that I get drain when I use Google (now) and/or Chrome. I don't use either too much so I am still investigating. When I use them I get a lot of held awake time in GSAM and a lot of Google Play Services and Android OS battery usage in the native battery usage app. I have to stop the apps and reboot to get the drain to stop. At least that is what is seems like at this point. Still messing around with it. If you use those apps a lot it may be a pain to deal with. If it is one or the other, hopefully an update will fix the issue.
I don't have google now activated, but I do use chrome. I don't see out rubbing in any background services though.
I did forget to mention that I revived nova launcher and all apps associated with it, (tesla unread, nova prime, unused icon packs), I also uninstalled any apps that I have not been using or rarely use.
Having said that, i did give google maps full permissions, went back to the stock launcher that came with the phone, and I did keep all my disabled apps....disabled. I charged my battery to 100%. I pulled my phone off the charger and it took over 30 minutes for the battery to get below 100%. I just got home about 15 minutes ago, and all I've done is Check my email and reply this post and my battery has dropped 5%. It hasn't even been 10 minutes. That's pretty bad. That would equate to roughly 30% an hour.
I'll keep updating as i search for things. I'll try dialing chrome and see what happens.

L29 c636 b585

Hi,
Firmware Finder shows b585 for my phone (L29C636 dual sim), although system update doesn't show it.
3 files downloaded 1.updated 1.3 GB, 2.update data full public 425mb and 3.update full L29 442mb
How to flash it.
Is this firmware safe?
I will download it but not flashing with twrp or dload ... Anyone flash it?
Mate 8, L29C636B585. Noticing a larger than normal battery drain on the Nougat version of Huawei's EMUI. Not sure if this is and issue for Google or Huawei. I already uninstalled apps that I have constantly monitored to be BIG drainers. and I also tried to tweak mobile data access and many more to see which app is really killing my phone. Been at it for 3 weeks now, still on the hunt.
Anyone have a similar experience on their Mate 8? L29C636B858 variant.

K. my bad. I see it to be as L29C636B585?
I'm retesting.
I got mine from FF because I noticed that L29C636B563 was experiencing the same issue I am having today 4-5 weeks after the update (Official OTA from Huawei) arrived on my phone.
My issues probably started the week of 10 June to 18 June, well after I've had L29C636B563...
The following apps may or will rise up to the top of the list of battery suckers and they happen at random most of the time, mostly too just after taking the phone out from the charging state:
Google Play Services
Calendar
Chrome
Gmail
And other essential apps....
I'll have good battery and see that I still have 30% left, then after 30 minutes at the dinner table... I'd be surprised that my phone suddenly died. This is around 11pm at night.
Anyway, I decided to install L29C636B585 (v84268 FullOTA-MF). I think something went wrong with this firmware update because I did not experience the 9 or 10 MFs that was more apparent in (v84265 OTA-MF).
This was just last Monday I think. First install, my battery was still draining crazily. After the first update to L29C636B585 (v84268 FullOTA-MF). I just restored everything from my Google Account. I did this twice.
A few days ago, I decided to do a full clean install so I processed my third wipe but this time, I started clean. Nope. Something is wrong here! Battery is still draining like CRAZY!
So. around Wednesday this week. I wonder what L29C636B585 (v84265 OTA-MF) is all about. Each package downloaded is less tha 600MB, and after the 9th or 10th prompt, the total MF package size came to 4.5GB and it installed.
After that, I just rebooted.
I noticed that a lot of times (just a 2 day period here), the battery usage would start to steady itself after an initial drain my Google Play Services or some crazy system app. No, it is not an app I installed. Maybe an app that Google Updated like Google Play Service or the Google App (with the Google Assistant).
Prior to updating to Nougat 7.0, I was happy at L29C636B321, the best most stable EMUI for my Mate 8 yet.
Why does Google release Beta Software to unknowing Beta Testers??!?
Yesterday from 4pm to 10:20pm, my battery went from 77% to 62%, that's pretty low usage??! I was also up and about that time. What happened? That's 15% drain in 6 hrs and 20 mins. The battery drain is still not consistent. Not as consistent as my L29C636B321.
That one would have a steady drain, averaging between 3% to 4% on moderate use.
So now... what?? I just installed Doze (for android) again and maybe it will force Google Play Services to doze once in a while since that essential service is exempt from any battery power saving mode.

Yes, mine is L29C636B585. While the 5-6 hours screen on time I get seemed low for this phone (could be normal battery wear?), I did not experience the crazy screen-off drain you reported. My battery usage list seem normal with android system being the biggest juice sucker.
Very unhappy with Nougat 7.0 (EMUI 5.0) L29C636B563 and L29C636B585, both are BUGGED to death. The biggest being the BATTERY DRAIN
I wonder if these 2 posts have any bearing at all:

Basically remove (make Not Allowed):
GeofenceService
HwLBSService
In "Ignore Battery Optimization".
Wonder what these 2 services are for? What happens if you remove them from Battery Optimization, i.e., allow them to be optimized.

[OOS 5.1.8] Battery life got really bad somehow

As I've gotten my new oneplus 6, battery life was amazing. I got around 7-8 hours of sot (and average use) with one cycle.
Now I'm on 5.1.8 and with the same usage I get only around 3-4 hours sot. Only thing that I've changed over the weeks; I installed xposed. I don't know if this is the issue, cause I only ran like 3 modules with it (Greenify, Snaptools and NSFW Gboard)
Something else to say, my op6 is heating up more then it should be recently. Like I'm only using whatsapp and instagram, and suddenly it becomes uncomfortable warm.
In settings I also made all battery improvements, given in a thread here.
Can someone imagine what could be the problem? Or does someone have such an issue also? I uploaded some screens in attachments, maybe this is helpful.
Thank's!
Sometimes it can take a few days for a new update to settle down. If it keeps up, you might reflash. Also, check for rogue apps and wakelocks, which can flare back into life sometimes when you update. I have not noticed any real difference in battery life.
It hasnt made a difference imo for my device anyway. From changelog nothing should affect battery tbh. Maybe wakelocks or something plus running xposed with modules is never good from experience
Well I'm on 4G most of the day, I think this makes a difference because I only get such good results like 7 hrs sot when I'm on wifi. With Airplane Mode enabled I lose about 4% over night, I think this is normal or?
Noticed this as well with the update...
Even clean flashed

I have the same battery life as all the other part builds. Actually better since I just added ex kennel.
I stay on data, never WiFi since I'm on T-Mobile with unlimited and never get throttled. I loose about 2% overnight (about 7 hours) though I do keep my syncing under control. 1 email account is set for 3 hours, work is push, all under Google account is turned off since I only need calendar and contacts syncing when I make a new entry so I just manually turn sync on then back off. And I turn all background data off for everything other then what I need like messaging apps and email, Google app and that about it. Nothing to crazy but why let things sync constantly when there's nothing to sync?
For me, definitely thought 5.1.6 was the best for battery life.
Have you tried going into recovery and wiping cache? Worked for me.

6+ SOT on all 3 builds so far.

Very limited SOT with OP6 128gb

Using Snapchat with 4G, is location, nfc and bluetooth also turned on?
That would explain the bad battery.
Snapchat is a battery hog, maybe also using some facebook services that you allowed location on and GPS is turned on.
I get around 6h SOT on 4G constant, no facebook permissions and not using snapchat.
Hi,
Thank you for the fast response. I have location turned on because of snapmaps so I will turn that off and limit some of Snapchat's permissions. Is there anything else that someone can suggest please it is crucial for me that my phone lasts all day because eventhough I dedicate quite a lot to Snapchat I also need it for word and Samsung internet for at least 2h each day.
Thank you again
Reduce your time on Snapchat and it'll last longer.
I know Snapchat drains my battery but it's the standby that is killing me and I already have optimised the apps and have Greenify but it seems so far that turning off location has helped quite a bit with general SOT so thank you. Also with Snapchat I only used it for 45mins and I know that it drain a lot but it just goes down too fast in general.

You don't generally need Greenify in Oreo and Pie, since they optimise apps pretty nicely on it's own.
Rather turn on advanced optimizations, look at the permission you gave to different apps (those also include the Gapps, they take too much advantage of all the permissions you give to the each app).
Also do check if you have Wifi scanning always on in the advanced wifi settings, that also lessens a battery by a margin.
Face unlock also reduces the SOT of the phone in my practice.
Some of the advices I saw on the forum, and mainly they work for me.
Also, if Gapps are spending loads of battery go to the recovery and wipe cache, let it rebuild cache with a charge or two and see if there are any results.
Thank you, I have cleared the cache and am letting it rebuild. The SoT now actually seems pretty normal just my phone tends to use 2-3% and hour on standby which doesn't seem normal. Thank you for your help though.
@echo246 Bro,
Move to stock. I am also using 128Gb variant and unlocked, wiped and moved back to stock using mega-unbrick tool. I am on OB3 pie and now I am getting 5 hr SOT + 2 days standby time in pure stock. use the stock battery optimizing features. Don't use any 3rd party app since it need to run in the back ground always to get the result. But then the result will be reverse. Also, don't be too curious and open the phone every 1 minute to check weather the battery is draining or not. Let it sleep. Be patient for one or two full battery circle (100% to 1%) get the result. You will get it. I am also in dual SIM always on 4G, location is in "ON" status. No 3rd party apps using for battery saving. Pure stock is always best and most suitable for every phone. as it made exclusively for that phone
I opened "apps" under settings and went through each and every app + system processes after the end of the first battery circle and which ever process or app used more battery, restricted it's back ground battery usage also all the installed apps too. So now no head ache. getting whats app notification even after optimised it. Not using chrome. using samsung beta browser.
Hi,
Thanks this is great thanks. I need Google pay though I tried what the other suggested and 36mins SoT with 3 hours on standby with a normal brightness without power saving mode on is unheard of for me. Thank you so far but is there anyway to make Snapchat more efficient?

I don't know whether you have replied to me or not. Anyway I assume so and replying.
Sorry I am not a snapchat user. I knew that always Facebook and whatsapp consuming more battery since it is running on background. But if you do anything, you won't get proper notifications. Only way for restricting background service is rooting. So forget all those, let the phone run as it is. OP6 is having a learning system how we use apps and accordingly it will distribute the battery. So let it learn from your usage and it will restrict itself.
(Bro, I was also a SOT + standby hunter like you, but now learned to leave everything to phone itself by controlling unwanted eagerness)
Yeah thanks by limiting the WiFi settings on not to scan and turning off location I have amazing standby now and my SoT without even having power saving on is a lot better now. Most of my problems come from Snapchat anyway but they are rewriting the very old and slow app ATM. Thank you
I have analyzed it and it turns out it is just Snapchat while using it 30 mins of using it and I'm down to 77% and I have used nothing else. Hope that snap Inc get the fix in faster coz they started the rewrite of the android code a year ago so hopefully it is done soon.
Some days I get 15hrs SOT without charging for 3 days. It all depends on how heavily your using the device
I also guess it depends on what apps you use because yesterday I had to do lots of research on my phone (I am a student which is why I need good phone battery and also why I use snapchat so much) and without power saving mode on I used 7% battery an hour (on Samsung Internet). My standby is now amazing because greenify just force closes snapchat now whenever my phone is off and when using snapchat away from home I turn location off (snapmaps) and used every optimisation for it possible. This has fixed that problem really well thank you. Yesterday I used snapchat and Samsung Internet and Excel and YouTube quite a lot and I got 5hrs SoT with only using power saving below 50% and with 14hrs standby. This therefore concludes that snapchat is a killer for every single android phone in existence (verified this on my old S6, my friends S6 edge, a S7 edge, a OP 5 and a Huawei P20 Pro). Thank you for all your help and if someone finds a new way to further improve this, then please also share your trick

I don't have anything special enabled. I just turn data off when I'm not using it, I turn location off when it's not needed. This also includes me playing Clash Royale for at least 3 hours a day sometimes more. When you're using SnapChat and your data you're also using your camera and location. GPS is one of the most battery hogging pieces of hardware on your phone. Right now I'm pushing 6 hours of SOT and I haven't charged my phone in over 24 hours and it's looking like I have 13 more hours left on my battery.

Google App Causing severe battery drain??

Anyone else seeing this? My Google App is causing severe battery drain. It's been off the charger for 3 hours, sot is 1:52 and battery is at 85%. Google is accounting for 17.4% of drain and only active for 6 minutes and background for 12h7m. I have it set to sleep when not in use. I was watching youtube this morning for 14 minutes and it only accounted for 1.3% drain.
Yesterday it accounted for 20.3% drain and only active for 6m and background 13h 21 m. Day before that 11.5% with active 7m and background 8h 14m.
This is weird. Coming from a Pixel 4XL and didn't see this much battery drain with so little use.

Haven't noticed that on the Note 20 Ultra but on my LG V60 it was about as bad as that. I have installed Nap Time by Francisco Franco which puts the phone into a deeper doze. It's a root app but can be used without root with a few adb commands. It's one of the first apps I install on all my phones.

Has it been doing that since you got it? How long have you had it? Because usually Google is saving a lot of your stuff and creating backups in the background but you can deny background activity by going into the app and ticking the slider over to deny background activity but that might preven automatic backups and saves.

I've had it a week and a half and it's been doing that since day one when I look at history. It takes as much as 25% on some days. I cleared the cache today and hoping that may help.
It's dropped 4% since I posted and I haven't used the phone at all. That's in about 20 minutes.

That's not normal.. is there any updates to that specific app or able to tap uninstall on it to roll it back to a possible previous version?
Edit: this is the screen I'm talking about to stop background activity.
I guess it's still not showing the pictures that are being uploaded.. I'm going to talk to the owner.
I'll try rolling back any updates, but I do see when I do a general internet search that other people have had the problem with Android 10 and Samsung devices. Most have fixed it by disabling the app. But that's not an option I want to take. LOL
I've cleared cache and rebooted. I'll see if I still see a large battery drain. If so, I'll uninstall and reinstall and see if that fixes it.

By the way, do you have a ton of apps and pictures and all kinds of stuff on the phone? Because if you do the carrier's don't give very fast upload speeds and if it's trying to save a ton of data it's definitely going to take quite a while on carrier data.. I'd use a business or someone's wifi if possible so it can do it quickly.

I have package pro and killallapps installed so would i be able to use naptime along with these?
Also is it just one click does it or do you have to do your own apps to deep sleep

I have a lot of apps disabled and yes you can still use it, don't know anything about kilallapps though. If I charge my phone to 100% before going to bed and lay it on the table until morning in 10 hours it won't lose 5%. depending on what apps you have installed may not be quite the same. And yes it puts the phone into a deep sleep. You can have it turn bluetooth, wifi and others off while in doze
