So I've been asking this question on almost all the new phones' forums recently because it's never mentioned in any of the spec websites or the manufacturers website. None of the YouTube tech channels check it either except for one which he also forgets to do for some of the phones.
The question is.... Is this phone Widevine L1 certified?
Anybody who already bought the phone can check through downloading an app via playstore. App name is 'drm info'.
Screenshot would be appreciated for anybody who are looking for this particular feature in the next phone they're gonna buy. Thanks in advance guys.
It might be worth waiting for the EU launch to check this as even if the Chinese variant doesn't have it (that market doesn't have the need for it do they?) the European/Global variant with all of the Google apps and framework might come with it.
I know the Honor 10 has it so I'm expecting this one to have it as well but, like you, I'm patiently waiting for confirmation. Honor UK never replied to this same question when I asked their Twitter account.

I have a Honor Note 8 since 2 Years and since the Android 8 Update is the framework preinstalled.
i have to install Play Store,Calendar and Contact Sync and all works fine, but it also worked with Android 7
I think the same with the Honor Note 10.
Mine is coming to me tomorrow from Manchester and then I can say more

Thanks for the information dude.
Can you double check by playing a video called 'test patterns'.
You have 2 devices so look at the numbers and see if there is any difference.
That video will show you what resolution it's playing at.
For Netflix in HD you'll probably need the modified APK.
Not only does Netflix HD require Widevine level 1 but they (Netflix) have to put specific devices on their whitelist. The modified APK bypasses the whitelist but not the Widevine level, but that's fine because this device is level 1 anyway.

Try and download modified Netflix apk. I managed to install it on my note 10 and it streams in 720p, don't really know why I don't see 1080p like I do with the same modified app on my mate 10.
Edit
I am now able to see 1080p as well. It was just 720p on the first episode of "Test Patterns" other episodes give me 1080p so happy now.

So I got my phone yesterday and installed all the stuff I usually use , question is why does Netflix and other streaming apps look horrible on this phone ? Is it because of the screen ? I was using an old iPhone 6 as a temp while I waited for this and video looked so much nicer on that screen even on 480p. Anyone else think the playback on this is bad or is it just me ? I did have a note 8 but I sold it to try this phone, wanted to try something new. I know lcd and amoled are on each device but I don't think it should be that bad of a difference if I think an iPhone 6 looks better , any thoughts ? What's your experience with this coming from another phone flagship or not ? :good:
This is over data and wifi and both have decent speeds for netflixing or even YouTube IMO
Two different apns for T-Mobile in s.california
Edit also binge is off on my account
Hi,
im thinking to buy this phone , can you explain what do you mean that looks bad ? can you take a photo of the "issue" with another phone ?
thanks
I think I just found the problem to this. Correct me if I am wrong.
I believe there seems to be the same problem with mix 2. There is a licensing called widevine L3. And it only let's the device play on SD quality. Not HD. so... I think we are in a bit of a dilemma.

From what I'm reading Netflix isn't a app fault it's a phone thing it won't play anything pass 480p because of drmservices , I fixed YouTube with a moded version set it to 1080 on default I'm looking for a Netflix fix but I doubt will get one
I may have found a solution...

is very disappointing in case , would be good to know if will be present in mi mix 2s global version as well.
I just checked with DRM info app. The device supports only widevine level 3. But level 1 is required for netflix in hd,unfortunately.
It is just a matter of software (free of any licencing fees), though, we might ask xiaomi to implenent it..
I did send suggestion thru their feedback section I think we should all do it maybe they'll actually do something about it

I believe all Mi Mix iterations have the issue, regardless of the ROM. BUT!, Widevine is owned or whatever by Google, so with Google giving the Mix 2s the Android P Dev Previews, I wonder if they would have included the L1 DRM for HD streaming

Its the same with oneplus.
Again, if anyone knows someone who's running the dev preview, please get them to check, we'd appreciate it.
I don't think it's how it works with Netflix. Even if your device has software and hardware compatible with Netflix level of DRM, Netflix still will need to certify it, before you will be able to watch HDR10 resolution
That's why we root and install custom ROMs ;-/
So, YouTube published this list
https://devicereport.youtube.com/
And while for example mate 10 pro is present there, Huawei's latest flagship p20 pro is not. Anybody knows what is the reason for that? It's a pity to pay more than 800€ for a device she not have the flagship experience.

Forgot that device existed. I wonder why then. Like i say they might add it to the list later on.
It might have to do with the fact that the screen is not HDR10 certified, like the Mate 10 Pro's. Though I find it kinda silly, since this one basically uses the same panel.

This is a temporary fix until Poco solves the Widevine issue for watching Netflix in HD and UltraHD.
Hi everyone, I have found a modded version of Netflix which allows HD and Ultra HD streaming on devices with WideVine L3 support.
I have extensively tested this app, it actually streams in 720p and above on Poco F1.
Instructions for 1st run:
Skip update and sign in, it may lag just close the app and reopen it and it will work after that flawlessly.
The link for HD only is: http://www.mediafire.com/file/i08g9us89xeu1xf/netflixlatest.hdonly.apk/file
And The link for Ultra HD is:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/8wmaxnftgr1h2m4/netflixlatest.ultrahd.apk/file
Credits:
The original thread is https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/netflix-hd-ultrahd-ultrahd-dolby-5-1-l1-t3535349
I spied the XDA thread on this issue. Great to have easy access to the APK.
The point stands though that it's harder than you might think to distinguish between Netflix at ultra HD and 540p on a phone, with the former using a lot more data.
Good to have the option though ?

I don't think Netflix has yet to whitelist the POCO F1. The poco team said they are making progress with them and the HD content will come soon, so maybe after the positive feedback from Netflix they rolled it out. (not sure for Hotstar though...) I'm sure when its officially confirmed and tested + working by the team, they will make a huge announcement that you can watch your HD netflix !

Hi guys! When playing stuff from Netflix or Prime video they won't stream in HD, just SD.
In the information section both say HD is not supported. Even Netflix wasn't available to download from Playstore so I had to download the apk from another site.
Saying so, do you have any ideas on how to stream in HD? Do you think it's necessary to change the ROM to do that?

Before I unlocked the bootloader of my moto g8 plus, both prime video and Netflix streamed at HD. After I've done it they both only stream at 480p max. So since I only had a few days left of Netflix left that month, I cancelled my Netflix subscription. I still have prime video because I subscribed to amazon prime but I would have cancelled it too since I don't watch much tvs and movies. I only got Netflix because of a specific show it's called "Lost in space" but I find that almost everything else is blasphemous and garbage in Netflix.
If you haven't unlocked your bootloader and only getting SD quality. Maybe you need to factory reset.
Hi, due to Virus they have lowered streaming quality.

I have my bootloader unlocked, and I didn't use the phone to stream before that so... I think it must be that.
Maybe I'll try locking it again. (When I'm in the mood to backup everything because doing so wipes all your data xD). And about lost in space, yeah that's a good one. If you still have prime video and didn't watch it already you should try The expanse.
Aaaaand. Sorry, I just remembered. I used it before to stream and the quality wasn't HD... That's exactly why I unlocked the bootloader... Because I was trying to update Android or to maybe install lineage. (Both were unsuccessful).

In 2022, you don't have to do root etc.. just follow these steps and you will enable prime video in full hd in your moto G8 plus or any other Widevine L1 device..
