Redmi note 5 AI Global front camera HDR+ and portrait mode working only in good light - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Themes, Apps, and Mods

After hours and hours of testing and depleting my battery twice in a day, I can safely say that I found a google camera which has front facing camera working with HDR+ and also portrait mode working.
On top of that the quality of the pictures taken with the rear camera were also very high quality. So far it's working on latest MIUI 10 Global Beta as well as custom roms like latest AEX.
The gcam I'm talking about is the CameraX-V2.apk from alone_in_dark https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-alone_in_dark/
HDR+Enhanced doesn't work on front camera, so remember to switch back to HDR+ after you use it on rear camera.

Close the camera completely, start it again, switch to front. Then take a selfie in good light, then you can take as many as you want in low light as well. Works for me, try it.

It works only if you take one in good light and don't close the app/change modes/open gallery. That's not a repeatable nor reliable in any lightning condition except in daylight. So it was already known issue which is yet to be fixed.

First picture taken with MIUI camera original was 7.8 MB and the second taken with Gcam was 9.7 MB. The dynamic range and colors are better for sure. Focus doesn't seem to be working on the gcam though, and google photos compressed the gcam photo more.

Don't know why I should provide proof lol. I've taken 4 more shots, 2 are with artificial light on and two are very low light photos with lights off, just a bit of light coming in from the window.

Gcam very low light https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZQFfz1QLM3CF6sQH7
All photos were taken in auto mode no over or under exposure.
If it doesn't work for you I'm sorry, there is nothing I can do. I don't try to make hoaxes here, I just didn't find a Gcam with front camera working like this one, so I thought I'd share it. I guess it's better than nothing.
Another thing, if your photos load after you take them with gcam then it means they are HDR+ photos, if it's instant it's not HDR+. All the photos I take with Gcam front are loading 2 seconds before they show up.
Edit: Best thing would be to wait for someone skilled to mod a gcam for our device.

I took some pictures outside and then inside. You don't have to turn it up. Its working. Thank you for your research.

Not only that, with Gcam minimal it also works and with HDR+ Enhanced. If you take a picture with the front panel in low light then they work in low light until you close the application or change it. Gcam is to tell the camera that you have taken a very bright picture before.

It's still not working in low light. It's not a repeatable pattern to make it work.

agree, it works once for first time after rebooting device, other than that no pattern makes it work again unless reboot device again.

No, it is a pattern. With enhanced HDR+, Make yourself a selfie with good light, it works. Without closing the application and without entering the gallery, enter an interior, it will work until you close or change the application.
Therefore, if you could get the front camera to believe that you had taken a picture in good light when you entered it would work.

I was doing that before the OP found out about it, I know the trick, but that's not the point, it still doesn't trigger in conditions other than bright daylight, do you understand that?
You can't go out every time just to make the camera work, and what about conditions worse than that, where are you going to find bright enough light to trick the camera, for example when you are going out in the evening? Even indoors during the day you have a hard time triggering it.

Cirra92 said:

Ok, but there is a pattern. Until now there was nothing. It's probably something to do with the default aperture value of the lens or something similar. For some reason, after taking a photo with good light conditions those values change. It would be enough to modify the initial values by the new ones.... But they need some interested developers.
No need to be angry, I'm just trying to help.

Camera is buggy - Too much Noise ( High ISO - 2000-3000 )

Hello,
So I received my all new HTC U11 3 days back ( in India) officially. HTC u11 has world's best rated camera but I am not quite satisfied with the results.
1.) Rear camera is really struggling to capture the photos in low light. I can clearly see the noise.
2.) Front facing camera has no OIS so pictures are blurry and most of the times I noisy photos.
Find the attachments below :
1.) Front facing camera
2 ) rear facing camera
See the noise and level of quality.
hm.. photo #1 has the plant completely out of focus. photo #2 has the pot in focus. you may wanna make sure that the subject is in focus before snapping.
did you change the camera settings to "Touch autoexposure"? The default mode of the camera is "Center-weighted"

Thank you for replying. Let me make the things clear.
The first photo was taken from the selfie camera where I tried to focus on the plant/pot everywhere but it was not focusing anyhow. No matter what it wasn't focusing.
In low light, I can clearly see the noise in the all corners.
The selfie camera doesn't have auto focus everything is in focus ( as long as it is at least 18 inches away). Play around with the settings for the rear camera. HDR auto, HDR, so far all my photos are excellent focal point and background.

Well, in the camera app, pull down the slider with the = icon, swipe to the right to reveal "Settings" which is on the left, tap on that and "Touch autoexposure" should be the first option.
This option is important if you tend to compose your shots with the subject not in the middle (rule of thirds) so tapping on your subject will adjust the exposure and focus according to your subject.
My low light shots are all at over 3000 ISO which leaves quite a bit of visible noise in the picture.
Not liking the camera in poor lighting just yet. Hopefully they will introduce an ISO limiter, or simply fix this in an upcoming update.
I also have a lot of noise in low light photos (rear camera). Automode just isn´t usable if you want to have nice low light photos. The pictures look like that of phones some years ago. Light sources are also always blown out a lot. I also think that the OIS of the U11 isn´t the best out there. So far I don´t really think that this is the best smartphone camera and I was hoping for a better camera performance. HTC told a german magazine in May that they want to deliver an update for the camera. But I don´t know if they really deliver or if this update was the small update of June (?) of the camera app itself. I did this update and nothing changed.
Camera is phenomenal with stunning low light performance.

Guys, I've been into photography for over 40yrs. - shooting at ISO 3000 will give you noise onless you're using one of the latest Pro or Prosumer cameras w/advanced sensors- the Nikon D5 / D500 are full frame cropped frame verions ef virtually the same camera in terms of auto focus, pic rendition, & yes, superlative results w/astronomical ISO's - which both support. This is a phone, not a prosumer or petter camera. 3000 ISO is gonna give noise. There are a number of companies that make post processing software specifically to help w/Noise. That nite shot the other fellow took is good work.
The phone is great. The camera is quite good. Deal w/the technical realities & don't expect the cellphone camera to deal w/noise like a Pro DSLR.

That's great, but the ISO fired at only 1262.
Whenever I take a shot in similar lighting, auto mode uses ISO 3152, which means there will be a lot of noise.
Perhaps there are different software versions going around, because my phone has very poor low light performance in auto mode due to it using a far higher ISO than it should.

I'm not expecting such a small sensor to handle ISO well - I'm expecting that the camera won't default to a ridiculously high ISO like 3152 where my previous Samsung S6 was happily snapping along at ~1000 with stellar results.
Yes, everyone knows that this isn't a DSLR. But when they claim to have the best smartphone camera around I expect better results. I also don't know why they use a smaller sensor than before... This phone goes for 749 Euro and the low light results often look like from an old S5 or iPhone 4. The Automode just isn't usable in this scenarios. If they deliver an update they could solve the issues, I guess.

And here in the first sample you can see what I mean with this weak OIS...
Zico, as someone else said go Pro mode & get lower ISO, & even if this phone's camera sensor is smaller than prev ones, - compared to a Pro(sumer) DSLR, this fone's cam compared to prev one vs.
DSLR is like the choosing pinch hitters who bat .249 & .253- the smaller fone sensor is just a bit less than the prev *slightly* bigger one- then there is the density of pixels & dynamic range that make for a good camera - Y am I still talking abt this?
Pro mode and manually selecting ISO is not a solution to a poorly tuned auto mode - it is a workaround that is barely tolerable.

Low light

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the OnePlus 5's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Probably requires a little work on the SW, as I've noticed it takes great pictures at times, and then bad pictures in the same conditions at times. Misses one star for low light pictures.
I deduct 3 star for low light, EIS doesn't work in still image & there is no OIS in OP5 (OP5 downgraded from op3 in stabilization) so, in pro mode it's impossible to use 30s long shot without tripod or stands(who the hell like to use tripod in smartphone).
And the normal shots has lots of visible noises compared to advertised, portrait mode doesn't work in low light with flash, (missing on background lights bokeh), telephoto lens which is only 1.5x optical doesn't work in low light.
??????????????????
It's great to my untrained eyes. XD

Yes, I provide here the link for the photos.
These are a set of night pictures, all taken in the same place with a tripod and different settings. This was my first test with a lot of different manual settings.
In every picture taken there's the apperture, the shutter time and the ISO in the details.
You can see for yourself which settings took the best pictures.
Remember this was complete night time with just a few street lights.
The download is pretty big, 427MB but they are the originals with the respective RAW files.

FAKE dual camera setup on Xiaomi Mi A1? [Not Really]

Greetings my dear Mi A1 brethren! Today I am the bearer of bad news for you guys. From unreleased source codes to headphone hissing. This problem is the final nail in Xiaomi's coffin for me. I will never ever buy another Xiaomi device again.
I have reason to believe that the "dual" camera setup on the Xiaomi is FAKE! Let me show you. Follow these steps:
1) Open up the camera app.
2) Cover ONE of the two camera lenses at the back with your finger.
2) Zoom in to 2x mode (or greater).
Did you notice something? THE CAMERA LENSES DO NOT SWITCH! The main point of the Mi A1's dual camera setup is that one lens is wide angle and the other is telephoto (as mentioned on their website). When you zoom in, the app should automatically switch cameras.
Another test is that the dual camera setup should provide a background blur (bokeh effect) on objects that are up close to the camera. Cover a lens with one of your fingers and you'll see that either the camera gets blocked by the finger or the blur effect still remains (regardless of the fact that TWO cameras are needed for a proper bokeh effect)!
Both these tests prove that one of the Xiaomi Mi A1 cameras is a dummy. Has Xiaomi lied to us again? Why would Google let them do this?
Or is it that I don't understand how dual cameras work? Someone please enlighten me. I feel I've wasted 250$ of my hard earned cash on a scam
EDIT: Nevermind! I just found out it does work. But only in manual mode or portrait mode. Strange that the app does not switch to telephoto mode automatically. Perhaps in a future update.
Have you tried manual mode

Yes, I did. I've edited the OP. I feel like a goof for not trying that first
No its real!
Try that in outdoor lighting conditions.
In natural lighting cover the zoom lens, and then hit the 2x zoom.
You will notice that the zoom lens is functional in good lighting conditions, not in bad light conditions.
Same with the portrait mode, thats why it is recommended to use 2x optical zoom and portrait mode in outdoor lighting conditions.
The camera decides if it should use digital zoom or telephoto lens depending on light conditions. Telephoto zoom only works with a lot of light(like portrait). If there is not enough light, digital zoom from wide angle lens is better. This even happens on iphone 7plus/8plus camera set up(if there is not enough light they just use digital zoom). However, I think that maybe it switches to wide angle digital zoom sometimes in good light conditions.
I can understand that you were concerned but please test things thoroughly before posting (or maybe Google it out). Actually the telephoto camera have a narrower aperture then the main camera. So it captures less light then the primary camera. When who cover the telephoto camera to see if it is working or not, then hit x2, it detects that there is low light (since you are covering the lens) & hence uses the primary camera. Okay, so this is how you should have tested. First go to a very will lit environment, then select 2x zoom, and then try covering the telephone camera. You will get the proper results. Hope this helps.
It's the same in Oneplus 5, for example!
Telephoto works properly only in good light situation

If you want to know before clicking a photo which lens is used for 2x zoom just look at the animation when you use the zoom button. If theirs an animation of zooming then it's digital zoom & if it is directly switching to 2x or 1x then it is actually switching between the lenses. And it won't change with a future update too as the OP hopes. Works the same way even on iPhones. It OK to have questions but you went too far calling it a scam, fake & never buying from Xiaomi again.

This Camera App is better than S9+ Stock

If you want very nice and sharp photos than you have to install "Bacon Camera" for your Samsung. We hope that someone can do a mod like Google Pixel Quality.
What does bacon camera do that is better than stock? Stock app is good all around but low lighting, it tends to tint red
The photos are sharper and have less noise. The tint problem will be fixed with an update I think
The only reason Gcam is better than Samsung's is because Google uses machine learning and it's massive database for that, I don't think this camera has these at its disposal.
Edit: This app doesn't support camera2 API, meaning you actually have very little control of what the hardware can do and all changes are software edited.
You can also try Footej Camera
Samsung pro mode is better than most of the copy cat apps in the play store. The only thing that works better is the gcam mod for front facing selfie portraits because of the machine learning blur.
The stock app, and the gcam, are the only camera apps you need.
But gcam is Not Working at this moment for s9+

I really want the Drama Photo effect from my Galaxy S4. Any idea where I can find this or an app that is like it. This effect will take 4 to 7 shots of a moving subject, and then stitch it together to show the movement of someone. thanks
I don't know any app that give you this. But for me personally I tried yesterday some versions of the gcam mod. Only one version is working a little bit. But picture quality is amazing. I hope someone do a full working mod for our dual camera than you have a Google Pixel camera with Samsung hardware.

I can't remember which version either. It was very buggy. It wouldn't save pictures Everytime and FC a lot

Samsung pro mode is better than most of the copy cat apps in the play store. The only thing that works better is the gcam mod for front facing selfie portraits because of the machine learning blur.
The stock app, and the gcam, are the only camera apps you need.

Agreed! Pro mode on stock is awesome!

Stock app is good all around but low lighting, it tends to tint red

I thought adding a dual aperture is supposed to help with low lighting???

It does, but most company besides Google have white balance issue.
Gcam doesnt do low light from what I see. Stock does very well in low light
Is really google camera that good compared to stock samsung camera?
Low-light photo quality sorta depends on the situation. If taking photos outside in low lighting, if you can keep your hands PERFECTLY still, the results can look better than the Pixel 2, but if we're talking consistency, I'd choose the Pixel 9 times out of 10. If taking photos inside in low lighting, especially when the subject is people or food, the quality comes out super soft. Some people like it, but it looks terrible to me. In these situations, I'd choose the Pixel 2 every single time, as it's consistent.
@jassu what app do you mean?

secondary camera

guys, dial *#*#1597#*#* and switch to the second camera...click the photo, check the resolution.. isn't it 2592x1940 (5mp) ... it's strange because the secondary camera is of 20mp and I am getting 5mp.
Mine is 3456x4608
Edit: sorry, I did not switch to the second camera, how do I do that?

okay... isn't the secondary camera of 20mp..why does it click photos in 5mp???oneplus ?
Yep the same. Pretty weird. But the image doesn't look like 5 MP though
Wow this is some major scoop! You're indeed right, also to support your findings, the OP6 brother, the OPPO R15, has the same primary 16MP IMX519 sensor and a 5MP secondary sensors only for depth informations.
This could be a camera-gate beginning for OP! It needs deeper investigation

that can't be a co-incidence. i am gonna post about this in oneplus forum. let everyone know about this.
For me the primary camera is at 15.9MP and the portrait camera is at 14.2MP.
Correction: The photos made with primary camera are at 15.9 and the portrait mode ones are at 14.2MP.

you mean portrait photos??the resolution is 15.9 mp for portrait photos too.
The portrait photo is also made with the primary camera, helped by the secondary camera.
If I cover the secondary camera I see a message on screen and bokeh effect is gone.
@aneesh12 Yes, I meant the photos.

yeah... that's how all the process works. but you said the portrait photos are 14.2mp for you which is not the same for me...i am getting 15.9mp photos. i am sorry if i got you wrong again
Another thing, the pictures taken with the secondary camera capture so much more light when shooting in really (really) dark places. Try it and let me know.
I think maybe it's the same secondary sensor used in the OP5T, the Sony IMX 376k, which is a 20MP sensor that via software does a pixel interpolation to "create" bigger pixels and capture more light.
However it's a cheap move to use this sensor only for depth informations

I'll try the second camera on op5t nd will see the resolution.
guys, what's the use of second camera anyways??? I've covered the second lens, still the photos came out as same as when the lens wasn't covered.
@aneesh12
For the depth of field effect/bokeh, portrait photos.

they could have gone for 5mp depth sensing camera then. why to waste 20mp for that. oneplus 5's camera was very well implemented. that optical zoom was actually useful and handy.

You have to double tap to change camera then you will see camera(2) instead of camera(0)

that is exactly what i said in the 3rd post. you didn't get what i said.
Could it be due to a software config, like using pixel binning to increase sensitivity in the dark?
