As the title says, i cant edit anything inside /System, no file explorer works, every single one of the says that the operation failed. I wanted to replace the boot animation and some UI sounds, tried flashing the files with recovery, no luck. Other root things works as intended.
Rooted quad-core Shield Tablet, Android 7 stock, busybox installed, also Xposed with greenify.

I cant go to recovery through Rom Manager for some reason. It works manualy( power+volume) but when I click it from the app it freezes, and shows an exclamation point triangle

actually, theres been a trend going on here....
I went on recovery to check if its working after I flashed it and it worked, after turning it off and removing the usb out of my computer I tried again and it didnt work.
Any ideas why?
Edit: when I had ROM manager I already tried to Flash CWM there if you're wondering.
Rename /etc/install-recovery.sh to something else with your preferred file explorer with root capability. Now reflash cwm and it will stick. What you are seeing now is stock recovery.

where can I find /etc/install-recovery.sh and what do you mean by file explorer with root capability?
Root explorer, ES File Explorer or something of the sort. This will let you directly modify files on the /system partition. Just enable root functionality in the settings, allow root when the popup comes up and rename/delete the /system/etc/install-recovery.sh file (this is the correct path, /etc is a link to /system/etc - ignore the other one).
Directories work pretty much the same as windows except it doesn't use "drives" (ie, C:\, D:\, etc), everything is found within the root directory (which is /).

Hi, I have a spice stellar mi 500. i tried rooting the phone which worked fine and then I tried removing some of the system apps like Rail yatra,, facebook, dhingana. i was able to remove them and then i finally booted my device. Since then I am getting the error "unfortunately system UI has stopped working" I am not able to open apps or receive calls. the system hangs. not even able to unroot the phone now as any apps will hang. even the control bar does not slide from the top. I am screwed. I have tried factory reset several times. in all different ways like from with system recovery or android settings. but i guess i am out of luck. can someone help me. :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:

You have most probably messed the systemUI.apk which is located in /system/app or files associated with it. Did you remove any other apk's in which you weren't sure what it does?
In this case, Factory reset won't work because it just wipes user data and /system partition remains in tact. The nearest possible thing to do is to flash a stock ROM if exists or copy the deleted apk's borrowing from some one else's phone and place those apk's in /system/app partition setting the correct permission.
I remember exactly what I deleted. I I uninstalled Dhingana.com, Facebook and Rail yatra. I cannot start third party apps though I can install them. So I am not sure how to place the systemUI.apk in the directory /system/app. Can it be done through inbuilt file manager?

Nope, I guess not possible through default file manager. You have to use ES File Explorer File Manager or Root Explorer to place it in /system/app and change its permissions to rw-r-r.

it get an error when i try yo copy the file to \system\app\. the error is copy failed. i am doing this with supersu previelege using esexplorer

is there a possibility I can get hold of a stock rom and flash it using update from SD card. the default android update manager?

Make sure you've mounted the /system partition as R/W before attempting to Copy or setting permissions.

No some permissions are unable to change because it is for safe purposes because you might screw up your phone if you change the permissions or there is a duplicate file of it

1.put the phone in download mode
2. Flash CWM by ordin
3. put the phone in recovery mode
4.install zip superuser 3.1.1 arm. Zip
And I want to edit permissions of system folder to copy files to system/bin

ok... i think there is a newer one in development section, with superuser 3.1.3
but i don't know if that is the problem, anyway you can redo the whole process of rooting, starting with flashing stock or you can change the app
i use root explorer and it works nicely, never had a problem with it
another thing you can try is flashing a custom rom, maybe its a firmware problem

I installed several kernels with system write protection disabled but every time i try to edit an xml file i cant save it i cant copy files to system its just not enabled i try to enable it through es file explorer but it says everythings already r/w i tried fixing permissions in twrp i have a kernel installed with write protection disabled but still no luck any help would be greatly appreciated thank you

Need more information.. What base are you on? 1.55.605.2? Which kernel did you flash? What mod exactly are you trying to do?

Yes you can check by going into settings>aabout phone>software information>software number. If your on Cleanrom v1.1 it will be 1.55.605.2 which is the latest base. What mod are you trying to do by editing your default . XML? There are a lot of things you can tweak in there.
Also, Cleanrom v1.1 has system r/w enabled by default. So you didn't need to flash that kernel to have it.

My advice would be to re-flash the rom, or restore a nandroid backup to get the roms stock kernel back. You could just dirty flash the rom and only wipe cache and davlik. You should be fine.

i would just like to write to system for future purposes for the mean time i used adb to pull the default xml then i modified the file on my pc to enable harman kardon and music channel then went to recovery mounted system and pushed it back its just a pain seeing i can't write to system when i want to yes it says 1.55.605.2 so i should be able to write to system and you suggest a fresh install? or should i just pull the kernel image out of the rom zip and flash through fastboot?
CleanROM has this capability without any 3rd party kernels or other modifications. I use ES File Explorer on a clean install of CleanROM 1.1 to write to the /system partition. You do need to enable R/W permission in the ES File Explorer app by clicking the upper left icon, going to Tools, enabling the toggle for Root Explorer, clicking on the words Root Explorer, clicking on Mount R/W, and enabling RW permission on whatever directory you want to.

was trying to avoid i clean install but i'll give it a go i did enable r/w with es file explorer and made sure all the bubbles were checked with still no luck ill do a fresh install without flashing any other files but clean rom and see what happens i'll let you guys know after i do it thanks
okay so I did a fresh install i factory reset x3 wiped data i know this wasn't necessary but i typed yes and wiped data x3 i went into advanced wipe and and checked every box except usb otg after backing up sd cards and then swiped to format x3 i then powered off the phone ejected my sd card put clean rom 1.1 on it and flashed it with no other files rebooted my phone went through the setup installed es file explorer enebled root access clicked on root access clicked on mount r/w and made sure everything was bubbled in on the right side mount r/w and i still cannot right to system im ready to give up

Why not make a copy of the files you want to edit... fix them up how you like.. then copy them back into place using file explorer function of TWRP (make sure you mount system).... OR put them in a flashable zip template and flash them. The changes will stick. You are likely trying to change files in use.

oh lol your'e right i just copied a file over from my sd to the system to test it wow I should of known that thanks so much this issue is solved I'm disappointed in myself gotta give myself 10 minutes time out now thanks tho
I tried installing it with both Flashify and Magisk, but both methods failed.
When I tried installing it via the included Xposed Installer, it also failed, but gave me the message:
> Error: Xposed_Framework.jar already exists in /system/framework
I'm guessing a previous installation failed, but left the file there.
My next idea is to delete that file from /system/framework and try again, but since it's in an RO directory I don't have permission.
I tried using a terminal emulator to mount the drive in rw mode, and also tried using a root file explorer, but either both methods don't work, or I just couldn't figure it out.
Anyone have an idea of how to remove or rename that file so I can try to install the .zip ?

In the Xposed app you should be able to just run the uninstaller script. If that doesn't work, boot TRWP and delete it from there.

Unfortunately, the uninstaller also fails.
It says it can't remove that file from a read only directory..

Root Explorer....
This app does wonders, it allows you to modify directories in /system and other root folders. You can even change permissions of specific folders/files from read/write/read-only....etc. I've had this app since the earliest of android days and it has been my go to file explorer. Root Explorer of course requires root....but it completely unlocks your phone and allows you to modify any system file that is set to any permission. Of course there are other file explorers that allow you to modify system files, but this is the one that i have the most experience with. You should be able to access the system folder where the Xposed file remains and modify it so it can fix your problem.

This!. I've used it for years. Not muss no fuss. It's not bloated like a certain couple others I know of. It just does what it does and does it well. Manages files. No extra garbage.Give it a try. I'd be surprised if you can't delete it with Root Explorer. If you do try it, go to the folder you want to delete the file from. Once in there, look at the top right of the screen. Somewhere up there It will say MOUNT R/W. Touch that and you should be able to do whatever you want to within that folder.
Do you have the magisk DNSCrypt module installed? If so, thats why you cant modify anything in /system. Not sure why or how it breaks it, but it does. Took me for ever to figure out what was causing it. Now that i removed the module, i can modify anything i want again.
